What are some of the more outlandish things you've heard premeds say? Here are a couple that come to mind:

"I'm applying to D.O. schools this year because they only have to go to school for 2 years."

"I made a 27 on the MCAT and I have a 4.0, so anyone who makes a 30 has to be going to harvard or something"

Any variation on the "I have a 4.0 GPA and I got a 38 on the MCAT, will I get in anywhere?" question by the....poor souls who feel the need to ask these questions.

Hahaha. Nice one.

This isnt really that crazy, but i feel so sad for the uninformed pre meds who do things for reasons that aren't true.....for example I heard a few freshman complaining about zoology, and one of them said "yea it sucks but I would have to take take it anyway because i'm a pre med." I wanted to walk over and be like, no where does it say that you have to take zoology as a pre req for med school......and its not going to show up on the MCAT. But i figured since it was alrady 8 weeks into the semester there was no good in telling her. So sad!

I don't have any quotes that jump out at you, but let me make a point to reference all of those students we have encountered that ask "So what's the difference between mitosis and meiosis?" in an upper division Biology course when the teacher has just finished reviewing genetic recombination or something. And three cheers for the myriads of premed hopefuls that don't make it a semester before realizing they had no idea what they were thinking. :corny:

On a similar note, I've met literally dozens of premeds who think you have to take Anatomy & Physiology as a med-school prereq. Many of them are sophomores and juniors. Out of the tens or possibly hundreds of premeds at my school, I've only met maybe 2 or 3 that are actually informed about the process and have any idea of what medicine actually entails.

My experience has been very similar. Most people have no idea what they have to do to get into med school, and most don't have any idea of what to expect once they get there. Some of the people I've met when interviewing also fit this description. 🙁

One of the main reasons I wish I didn't go the "pre-professional biology" route. My hardest class is my 1hour human structure and function lab. Its an upper level anatomy type course and kicks everyones ass every year. Has kept many from graduating.

The common one.

"I'm majoring in Biology because you have to if you want to go to medical school."

Irks me every time.

Correction. This quote was found on this forum:

"I was thinking about my personal statement and concluded that I have nothing spectacular, "life changing" to write about.

Then it dawned on me, if i sold my kidney to a stranger that would be like killing 15 birds with one kidney. first i could use the profit to pay for my application fees, it would be a great interview conversation and i could put it into my personal statement (i would say i donated it). it has to count for some clinical and volunteer experience.

this seems like a such a great idea i can't believe other pre-meds have not done this.

if you want an extra kidney, or no one anyone who does let me know."

I hope he/she wasn't serious.

About the business cards thread...it was absolutely a joke (you will understand it only if you have seen American Psycho)

"dont worry about ur math classes u dont need them to apply to med school, they just care about sciences"

-some junior that was going to apply this cycle

I find it interesting that we enjoy dumping on premed students when many of us were probably saying pretty dumb and obnoxious things over the past 4 years. I'm sure in a few years we'd be embarrassed about what we're saying right now about getting into medical school. Just a little perspective.

"I'm studying for the MCATs"

What, is there more than one MCAT? God that pissed me off back then.

I'll give it to you that I wasn't an expert on medical school back in my day, but then again I didn't talk much about it. Ignroance is one thing, refusing to see it is another

Some things I should have known:

Research is important
Yale medical school does have tests
AP credit isn't as damning as I thought for applications
Myspace is a bad way to get a date
Scrub bottoms don't offer nearly as much support as I would like.

"If I just wanted to make a lot of money, I'd go into another field... like investment banking for example."

"I won't take the MCAT until this spring, but I'm going to go ahead and apply to get my name out there."

I'm not sure applying without any kind of MCAT score is a great way to get your name out there...

"I'm studying for the MCATs"

We would have also accepted, "Yo, you gonna use that ATM Machine?"

or, "I am applying to MSTP programs". I may have said that.

On another note, I've heard the "Med school doesn't care about math"

and one that pissed me off the most, from the kids back in HS, "I'm not reporting my AP scores so I can retake the courses in college to buffer my GPA" 👎

Apparently accepting challenges above and beyond the call of pre-med isn't accepted by most.

"I'm still deciding between MD/PHD, MD/JD, or MD/MBA. "

Does anyone else have a desire to kick people when they say this... or is that just me???

"I haven't taken the MCAT yet, but I think I can score a 35+".

Right...🙄

As an MCAT teacher, I see what the students put down for their target score on the day of their diagnostic. You'd be amazed at how many students anticipate scoring in the 95th+ percentile. In any given class, it's probably 50%. I almost feel bad for them because they will inevitably end up disappointed.

I remember one girl at my undergrad spent all of her time talking about how Harvard was "most def" her top choice, how she had met one of their deans and of course was going to be going there.

She wasn't accepted to a single med school. Go figure. Maybe she spent too much time worrying about Harvard and not enough doing ECs and whatnot.

As previously mentioned, a lot of people out there think about applying to med school even though they don't know what med schools are actually looking for. Not only that but they don't even know about what residency is, how the matching process works, specialties etc. I know its not a major concern but people should know at least the basics before they know what they are getting into.

"I'm studying for the MCATs"

What, is there more than one MCAT? God that pissed me off back then.

For a lot of those people, there very well may be.

If you test more than once, you have taken multiple MCATs.
No, fahimaz is still right. There is only one MCAT. You don't have an option between one MCAT or another; you take the MCAT.

If you take it more than once, it doesn't mean you've taken "the MCATs". It means you've taken "the MCAT multiple times".

What are some of the more outlandish things you've heard premeds say?

"Can a doctor have a nice luxurious lifestyle, with plenty of vacation time? Cause I really don't want to work more than 40 hours a week. I don't want to work nights or weekends either."

I've had people tell me that getting that kind of work would be for a derm, and have tried to use that to lure me into medicine.

Recent conversation:

"I want to apply"
"It's really late if you're planning on starting your AMCAS now. What was your gpa/MCAT score? Are you applying to rolling schools or non-rolling schools?"
"Oh, only rolling, I guess. My gpa was below a 3.5, I haven't taken the MCAT yet"
"Uhmmm....when would you take it"
"January"
"you mean the January after the AMCAS deadline has passed"
"yes. Well, I thought I could ask the schools to do me a favor...plus it's ME! Come on!"
"......sweety, there's this website I want you to check out...it's called SDN..."

I was in a premed class and we all went around saying why we wanted to be doctors and this girl said her parents told her she had to "Take the family to the next level"
-durty

First day of organic class: "Is this your first time taking this course?"
My answer: "This will be my only time taking this course."

Repeatedly heard from various students in organic class throughout the semester: "Last semester when I took this class....."
I'm sorry, I couldn't hear anything after that lead-in because I was laughing too hard every time.

ps- These kids are also your competition. Be of good cheer.

These quotes are the reason why I don't have any pre-med friends haha. Atleast on here I can read what I want...I don't have to hear every annoying comment in person

You're spot on. It's definitely better to be the one doing the annoying than being annoyed.

"Hey milkman, since you're at UAMS, can you give the people at the MD/PhD committee a good word for me so I can get in?"

-me, right then😀

seriously though...😎
