I have an interview at Temple in Philly next month and from what i have heard, the program is solid. However, I have heard horrible things about its location and safety. Any residents out there or med students who can enlighten? Im from a city that has a REALLY high crime rate and just wondering if it was different.

I go to PCOm but I took some grad courses at Temple and studied at the health campus library. It is a really bad neighborhood but Temple security is excellent and Broad street is well lit. My sense is that if you use common sense you would probably be ok.

I was there 96-00. No major problems. A few muggings. Lots of car break ins. The subway is actually pretty safe. Broad is OK. Use common sense. Don't wander in the side streets at night or too far anytime. Avoid being on the streets late at night. Use the escort service as needed.

BTW Temple security is actually a fully trained, armed police force. They are actual sworn officers not rent a cops. So that helps although it does point out that Temple is not in Disneyland.

I'm an intern at Temple. The security around the Temple medical campus is very good. When I walk to the parking garage there is usually a security guard right across the entrance to the garage. You swipe your ID badge to enter the garage and there are cameras throughout. During middle or night shifts we park in the garage attached to the hospital. I don't think anyone lives around the hospital because it's not a safe area to live in. Many of the neighborhoods are pretty safe: Center City, Old City, Manayunk, Roxborough, etc. I live in Manayunk and so far haven't seen or experienced any car vandalism. You just have to use your judgement...don't take a walk in North Philly at 10 pm at night. Many of the other neighborhoods probably have similar crime rates to other major urban cities.

Does anyone know what are the best suburbs around Philly? Are there any good neighborhoods less than 30 minutes away?

Suburbs, eh? I prefer Center Cty, but I think the best two suburbian areas are Manayunk (10-15 minutes depending on traffic) or Bryn Mawr (15-20 minutes), both excellent neighborhoods. If you like the suburb feel, you might also like some carefully chosen areas of South Philly or the Art Museum area, which lack the "big city" feel of Center City. Check out craiglist.org for listings.

As a rule, you can live close to Penn (as long as you don't pass 47th St Wbound), but living close to Temple is NOT recommended (not saying anything about the residencies, just the neighborhoods).
