Hey guys,
Sugar Plum here, I need your advice; and before you comment on my title hear me out lol. So I am graduating in may, with a degree that has basically nothing to do with pre-medical/medical schools, well not as much. Anyways, I go to a university which has 4 campuses, and 1 of them is very close to my home. I had spoken to a dean a while back who told me that since I commute for over 2 hours per day, and the fact that I have so much going on, my chances of med school are so low that even the carribean schools won't accept me, and said that the best way to boost my stats is do a post bac in the campus near my home, since it's so close. Where I live there are not that many 4 year universities, and I definitely do not want to commute for over two hours. Anyways fast forward to now, I recently went to the campus near my house, and they told me I cannot re-enroll, as I never took courses in that campus, and they told me to apply as a non-matriculated student and basically hope that they let me in, because they work on seating bases, like how many left over seats are available for the university. I had been rejected by that campus bassically 3 times, and although my results for the non-matric app are not in yet, I am not too optimistic. I have basically been brawling and crying over every decision I have ever made that lead me to this moment, and all my failures in life. I am tired of fighting with this campus, and it's beyond ridiculous that they treat students who like me who just trying to take courses as a non-degree seeking applicant to a state university that's not even medical school yet. I am not annoyed by the fact that they rejected me this many times as much as I am annoyed by the fact that as a university student they refuse to help me find other ways to get my pre-reqs done. Is there a way I can get my pre-reqs done at Community College, and will Med schools let me take them/allow them on my app? How can I figure a way around this? Like I am really interested in going to a university near my home, but there aren't many but just 1, but I have a few that are a bit further away but those universities are private/not well known, and I have a community college, but I heard medical schools don't recognize that.

If you have issues, go to another school. You can take prereqs at CC, but I would advise against it unless it’s your only option.

Okay, I was thinking about doing it at a lesser known university, but idk if that would be the same as going to a CC.

Score well. Perform well on MCAT. Do the other required ECs to demonstrate your commitment to medicine.

Do all that and you’ll be fine.

Sugarplum, aside from your detailed frustrations with your home school, your story is still quite vague. How bad is your situation? What is your cGPA/sGPA, what pre-requisites have you taken? What is your MCAT score? Do you still need all the basic coursework or are you looking to do mainly upper division classes. For all we know you might be better served in a traditional Post-Bacc program, DIY Post Bacc, SMP Program, other Masters degree program, etc. No one can really advise you that well based on the information you have provided thus far. Also, depending on which option is best for you, you might actually have to make a difficult adult decision like moving away from home. I don't think there's any advice here that you can use to make your home institution accept you at one of its satellite campuses. Even if you could somehow convince them, are you sure that's the right step to take? The thing I definitely wouldn't do is take classes at a community college. Medical School will not accept them and you would just be wasting time and money.

FYI, CC credit hours would be accepted. Let’s not spread misinformation, please. Whether they will be weighted differently or be subjected to any bias is a different story.

Forever Geebs, you don't really know what her situation is yet. She might still need all her pre-reqs, she hasn't told us. For all you know, she might not be ready for the MCAT or she might already have a stratospheric score. Again, we don't know.

With all due respect, no. They look upon that stuff very, very poorly.

That has nothing to do with your misinformed guidance regarding coursework from CC’s being accepted by medical school. That’s all I was addressing re your post.

Forever Geebs, my guidance is very well informed. CC pre-reqs are dimly viewed by adcoms. Couple this with someone who has already been told by their dean: that her chances of med school are so low that even the carribean schools won't accept her and I dare say that you are the one with the misinformed guidance for the OP. But I'll tell you what, sure I concede that CC pre-reqs are technically pre-requisites in the theoretical sense, but I stand by what I said: If she takes her Medical School Pre-requisite courses at a community college, she is absolutely, positively and without question WASTING HER TIME AND MONEY. I'm sorry, this is very basic pre-med information and I afraid that you're just not giving good advice here.

You hijacked this thread after speaking in absolute. Re-read what I said to the OP and then to you. I’m not going to argue with you.

Good night.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

I did re-read your post and you said:

No. She should never take her medical school pre-reqs at a CC under any circumstances, Even if she feels it's her only option to get the coursework completed. They simply will not give it credence under the best of circumstances. She might miss out on med-school, but she would have saved herself time and money at the very least. I do not wish to fight with you either. Sweet dreams.

Enroll for a 2nd degree -- one which matches the pre-reqs preferably so they don't complain -- and then don't finish the program. Just do the pre-reqs you need. That's the path I am taking, it gives me priority enrollment (I am considered a Senior), and access to loans.

This is entirely dependent on the school and is openly, blatantly false. There are several posters (who are accepted/matriculated/etc), including myself, on this board who completed some or all of their pre-requisites at CC. I don't know why you think your limited perspective on this needs to be so vehemently defended, but if you're going to speak in absolutes then it only takes a single data point to prove you wrong.

Seems legit. Go for it.

Reading through some of your old posts, it looks like you've already been given pretty solid advice from gonnif and another. Follow it. Especially the one about going to med school in your home country if that's where you want to eventually end up anyway. I don't know how probable that will be for you, but it's worth looking into. As for your questions in this thread...

Taking prereqs at CCs are situation-dependent. If you need to retake classes, then, yes, taking them at a CC is a bad idea because it will look like you took the easy way out to get an A. Same goes if you take prereqs at a CC during breaks from your undergrad institution if you haven't graduated yet. If you've graduated and have never taken the prereqs, taking them at CCs will not hurt you. Adcoms were students once too and they know how expensive it can be to go back to a university/college to take those prereqs.

A no-name university/college is fine. Is it accredited? Then go for it. Just don't take any classes from places like diplomamillsRus.edu and you'll be fine. However, wherever you go, keep in mind that if that school has a premed committee you gotta jump through their hoops too in order to get a committee letter from them before you apply to med schools.

If I were you, I would stay away from your alma mater. It sounds like even if you were able to get in and take classes there they probably won't give you a committee letter and that will seriously limit your chances.

Thank you, but I believe I also stated that most of my family, and my financial/emotional support is here currently, and going back is something I would like to do in the later time period of my life, I currently do not have the financial means, nor any other means to go back to a nation I can barely survive in, which is why I am basically here in the first place lol. But I wish it were that easy for me though, I feel like my university is basically a nightmare. I also am not too keen on my chances of a committee letter, my GPA is not that competitive to get it, but I will work on it, if I can get in. I will on the other hand go to the other lesser known university to get my pre-reqs done for now. I basically have only a few bio classes, chem 1 and 2, and calc under my belt, so I am hoping that I can get my GPA enough. It's just I was in a panic mode because I thought my dreams were basically over, and I can never do what I wanted, but this form gave me a good understanding what I need to do now. I might take some labs in my CC, since they are only 1 credit courses mostly and it's financially easier, and I might take the pre-reqs at the lesser known university. Thank you all for helping through this, it's nice to know that I can still do it without my crappy university getting in the way. I can just take my business elsewhere, and get possible better services and a better experience, and continue on my path. :)
