I need to tap into the wisdom of those who are either fourth years currently or who have been through the match process. I am in the process of planning a cruise during fourth year with a bunch of friends, and the date that works out the best happens to fall the week before the match. I would be back four or five days before the match.. Is there any reason that I should not plan on that? Is there anything I need to be doing a couple of weeks before the match that would make it so I would want to be in the country? Thanks for your advice!

I say go for it. A couple of weeks b4 match your only responsibility will be trying to not freak out. I'm going to guess that is a lot easier to do whilst holding a tropical drink and laying in the sun. IMHO.

Go on the cruise. If you're really worried about not matching, it sounds like you'll be back in time for the scramble (2 days before Match Day) anyway. As Jane Dough said, you'll be happier sitting on the boat in the sun with your buddies than freaking out at home alone.

After interviewing, I got an opportunity to teach in eastern Europe, so I went, didn't match, and had to scramble, from Serbia and Montenegro. With modern telephones, internet and your trusty laptop that you've digitized your CV, transcripts and LORs/PS's into, as wells as the ERAS application data, I was able to scramble into an excellent residency in an outstanding location. In those days, the scramble didn't use ERAS like it does today. You had to fax/email your stuff.

Then, letter of intent in hand, I went skiing! Sarajevo was fun, no crowds, bright and warm sunny days.

I spent some money on the Internet Cafe, and phone cards, but, if you're in LA or Boston, in this day and age, with faxes/emails readily available, it's pretty easy. I did have one program comment on my overseas fax number, but I assured them I was a US national with a US medical degree, and that was enough. Enjoy your cruise.

Thank you to you all for this helpful information. Your perspective and experience is very appreciated..
