CSU c/o 2020 applicants, y'all ready for this?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Done and done. Thanks for the advice.

I want to enjoy vet school. I know the infamous drama but, stress could bring us together rather than separate us. Let's practice civility, even if we have trouble seeing it in others, and hopefully we can all get in and be excited to see each other next fall!

Too true. Got to keep it together. I apologize for getting out of hand there. And, besides, Fort Collins is a pretty chill place. lol. We might want to start practicing for that.

Very chill here! I cheat though. I get frustrated and either climb a cliff or hug a cow or visit a brewery. Much easier to relax with all that in the "backyard."

I almost went to CSU for undergrad. Got accepted, just not enough scholarship money to beat out my undergrad. There's a bit of jealousy simmering under the lid on my end. lol. I love it when people say "mountains" meaning the sandhills of Nebraska. I snort-laugh every time.

I only got off one undergrad app before crap hit the fan so I went to school in Billings, MT.
I came down here five years ago to get residency and have worked and had kids and made a farm and completed a MS this last year. I like the area, but unless we buy a house in the area, we'll leave after school because the rent prices have tripled in 5 years and we'd like to be able to afford life 🙂

Born and raised in Aurora, Colorado, and I can't believe what's going on with the rent in the Denver Metro area. I took an RD job with my undergrad, so I'm back in Nebraska. My boyfriend is hoping that we can move in together once my contact is up. That won't happen unless I get a decent job with a college again or an even better job because of how crazy rent is. Or we move out to the eastern edge of Aurora or Parker.

Yeah, definitely no rolling admissions! But I am pretty sure they don't do the combined programs first, as sheep says. I know that because they told us directly at the pre-vet visit day! But yeah, either way - it's a really slow process. Not looking forward to it.

(Especially since I graduate this semester, and I'm really struggling with putting in effort. Which wouldn't matter if I get accepted this time around, but would if I don't...😛)

Per CSU's website:

Evaluation & Notification of Admissions Status

The Office of Veterinary Admissions has a Phased Admissions evaluation and notification process which has been divided into three phases. This will provide applicants with an estimate of when they might expect to be notified about their admission status. The phases are as follows:

  • Phase One: mid-September - Notification and denial of applicants who have an incomplete application. These are applicants who did not submit the VMCAS Application; Colorado Supplemental Application; associated application fees; and/or the PPI Report by the deadline.

  • Phase Two: mid to late October - Applicants for the UAF/CSU Program or the Combined DVM Programs will be notified if they have been denied, selected as an alternate or offered a position. Applicants who have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or less will be read, some will be denied and some will move forward to the DVM review.

  • Phase Three: late December (late-January for WICHE applicants) - Applicants will be notified if they have been denied, selected as an alternate, or offered a position in the DVM Program. Also, early non-sponsored offers will be made to those WICHE candidates who were highly ranked by the CSU Admissions Committee members.

Meaning: I hope to hear in mid October that I get to do either the DVM/PhD or DVM/MS, or to hear nothing until December.

Even with vet school way up in FoCo? Or do you mean just in general, without vet school being considered?

In general without getting into vet school. If I got in, we would move up to FoCo. So hopefully, we won't have to worry about it. lol. With the average 1 bedroom being 1200 in the Denver Metro last I heard, it would be great to get away from that a little bit.

Exactly my point from earlier.

What has caused rent to jump like that? Is it just a large influx of new residents? I used to live in San Diego, so I'm used to some ridiculous rent, but I thought life would be much cheaper if I left California.

There are $1000 plus one bedroom apartments here too, but you can still find occasional 2b/1b for $900. Anything under $800 is normally a scam now. We rented 3.5 acres with a run down 2b/1b for $1300 the last 4 years. The new people are paying $1500 and we are having trouble finding a new, new place for under $1700 with land. (We're in a very temporary place now with my animals scattered among kind friends or sold.)

The claim is that it is the huge influx of people. CSU has increased admissions in all of it's programs, but we also had a few new tech companies move in and a decrease in housing built after 2009.

Oh, and many new breweries and distilleries and being listed in the top 10 best places to live for many years straight and the list of reasons to move here keeps going.

That goes for pretty much any urban area in Colorado. We've had a population increase of, like, 2-5% every year for the last five to eight years or something like that. Developers in Denver simply can't keep up with the influx of people, so there isn't enough housing in certain areas. At that point, older places realize they have the supply and there's a lot of demand, so the prices have been increasing quite a bit every year. The joke actually is that it's Californians invading Colorado, depending on what native Coloradan you're talking to. lol.

I just got off Skype with my boyfriend and another suggestion he had would be for us to move into a house with a buddy. Our buddy makes about 20$ an hour at a liquor warehouse and is thinking of buying a house eventually. If he buys the house, we'd be fine renting from him. Granted, if my boyfriend lands a solid job and I land a solid job, I'd be equally fine with us buying the house and him renting from us. lol. My parents' mortgage is 1350 for 3,000 square feet and a decent back yard.

Most of the students here share housing. There is a me +3 rule, but that still means 4 students in a $2000/mo house is $500 each. My husband and kids and I can't pull that off though...go figure🙄

For serious, though. lol. I would like to get the family show on the road personally, so I would love for him and I to get our own place, live together for a bit, get hitched, and go from there. But that's the ideal plan and the ideal plan never actually happens. lol.

It's U+2 in FoCo. :/
Obviously I live with my family. I knew it rhymed and was 3 unrelated just got the rhyme wrong. 😉 I know 3 houses of 4 students though, so for whatever that's worth...

The me+3 is a pretty big misconception (because it rhymes, like you said!) - there are a lot of places with 4 people (or more!), but I heard the prosecutor guy who takes these cases has won 100% of them. Then again, CSU may tell us lies like that to get us to comply! Haha. There's always the apartments that are 4 people.

But overall, rent is really affordable here. Last year I paid less than $500, including everything except gas/electric.

Speaking as someone who works in college administration, there's certainly plenty of lies told. Lol. I definitely tell my residents that I'll make them clean the trash chutes and trash room in my basement if they keep sending glass down the chutes. I'm not actually allowed to do that, but it's definitely a good deterrent.

In my tiny undergrad town, a lot of people pay $500 or less for everything and it makes me cringe to hear then day they want to move to X large city. Good luck, kiddo.

FoCo is large, but not unreasonable, which is very nice. And most of the student housing situations have independent leases (for multi-bedroom apartments) which is soooo nice.

Yeah, I work in graduate advising/admissions - we don't have to lie quite as much, but sometimes...

I definitely try to lie only to keep to preventing stupid stuff from happening.

I run the tallest building for 100 miles (not even kidding) and we have a trash chute that runs from the 11th floor to the basement that maintenance cleans out. People dropping glass bottles from the 11th story is going to cause them to shatter. If the trash is thick enough, the maintenance workers don't see it, and they get cut up. Granted, I hold a very real threat of locking the trash chutes so they have to walk to the dumpster themselves. But cleaning a trash chutes just sounds so much worse than walking. Lol.

I'm already sick of waiting. I was reading through last year's thread and the delays that moved everything back into November through January and I don't want to do that!

So, what we are waiting for right now is for VMCAS to send out our apps to the schools, right?

I'd put this on the general 2020 thread, but it seems like all that's moving there is the rolling admission schools... though maybe I should

Yup, definitely antsy and ready to find out what the next year of my life has planned (nevermind the whole rest of my career and family plans and farm plans and my whole freaking WORLD! Ahhhhh!!!!! Ok, little better now...)

I feel you. I spent a few hours planning out the routes I would take to drive to interviews at my other picks. I'm not going to have major distractions until next weekend after I come home from my parents' house with all my stained glass stuff. So I'm glad I also applied to Western so that if I get an interview, it will hold me over for a while.

Same, I'm anxiously checking my email every day hoping for verification...even though it'll probably be at least another week or more since I didn't submit til the 15th. My fault for procrastinating on the PS.

Also a little worried about what may happen if I were to (hypothetically) be a finalist in this scholarship I'm applying to, I would have to commit to acceptance in late November then and what if I get vet school interview offers afterward? I know it's extremely unlikely that I'd be a finalist there AND get any vet school offers on my very first attempt when there are so many more competitive candidates than me, but hey I can hope, haha.
...maybe I should hold off on this until next year, but I have an advisor who was excited to help me apply for it (I'm the only one attempting from this school) and I already requested some LORs from the teachers who did my VMCAS ones so I'd feel bad. Also the deadline is on really short notice (Oct. 1) since I only learned about it a week ago so I might not even find a 4th recommender. aarrghh.

4th reccommender? Oh, wait, for the scholarship? Nope, don't understand. I would need more data, I'm just going to nod my head and say:

"I hope everything works out for the best!"

Yeah...😛 it's a bit of a mess, but it's a scholarship that offers a whole year of study in Ireland (all travel and expenses paid). I've always wanted to go to Ireland but the potential price of traveling there for vet school seemed high so I didn't apply there via VMCAS, I think this could be a great opportunity. Thanks!

@Njnealon I was trying to figure out how to pm you. I had a few questions about the DVM/PhD program and one in particular that is about a weird super specific application problem.

I live in FoCo, so we could meet too, or I can just ask here if I drove people crazy trying to contact you...

I'm hoping I get into CSU, partly because of the skiing. I was a huge skier/snowboarder my whole able-bodied life and loved skiing Colorado. I got back on the slopes last winter and have absolutely fallen in love with monoskiing; picked it up pretty quick too.

I want to race competitively and try to get to the Paralympics someday. I know I won't have much time to focus on skiing while in vet school, but it'd sure be nice to live fairly close to some badass resorts and go have fun once and awhile.

I'd totally ski with you 🙂 I was an instructor all through my undergrad 🙂

Does anyone know when CSU sends out the information regarding checking their portal system? LSU SVM set ours up weeks ago and I haven't heard anything yet

My only experience is over 2 years ago and back then you got an email within days after sending the supplemental that hooked you in to RamWeb. Hell, it did that when I applied for my MS 2 years ago.

I officially don't know this year because I was waiting for the same thing to happen.

Last year, they utilized the portal way less than the year before. I pretty much only logged into the portal when I got an e-mail saying they updated it. Otherwise, it was pretty non-existent. The portal was completely different two years ago and I like that system a lot more than this one. But it is what it is.

Yep. I only check the portal when they say it's changed. Heck that's how I found out I didn't get in last year... right before Christmas.

I taught telemark in upstate NY. But I've been skiing in AZ my whole life.

Sunrise? Never skied AZ, I prefer snow over dirt :hardy:.

I'm assuming you've skied Colorado, but if you haven't, it's awesome (in my opinion). I remember good tree runs, but that might be a very bad idea on a sit-ski. If I even started venturing into the trees, I could imagine ski patrol phone lines lighting up almost immediately:

"Yes, hi. A handicap person just skied off the run and went flying into the trees. Send all your people, now."

Hey, me too! Well, last year I found out December 5th. The year before I found out December 22nd. Either way, nice Christmas present, CSU.

AZ snow isn't bad at all and the lines are so short because no one knows about it. Sunrise and snowbowl are the best, mt Lemmon is meh. But seriously, we get good snow 🙂

Yes, I've skied Colorado and Utah and all over. 🙂 let's skip tree runs and go straight for back country. No one will suspect a thing

Snowbowl is my favorite! Especially now that they make snow up there to supplement, the conditions are usually really nice.

So......
It's after mid October.
Do you think any of us combined program people are gonna hear anything soon or do we need to wait for the final VMCAS crap?
The site hasn't updated a new timeline, but they also still say they are waiting on VMCAS, at least on my portal.
I'm ready for good news! They can keep me waiting for good news too I guess... but only for good news.

Not going to lie, I still count this as mid-October. lol. But you could always e-mail Janet or Hannah to see where they're at.

Should be coming up soon-- but I would give it a while longer before you start contacting them.

This made me smile. I worked as a lifty at Winter Park few years ago and I definitely heard comments like this fairly often. I always wanted to tell those commenters to go and try to keep up with someone using a sit-ski... I sure as hell couldn't, their skills are on fire! 😀

Well, yeah, mine says GREs too but it also says up top that they aren't tracking or entering them yet...
