so I work for Walmart as an Intern. I work every saturday. Recently (in the past 3 months), I was hired as a Pharm. Tech at a hospital in Jersey (Jersey doesn't recognize interns or something). The hospital has been putting me every other weekend (saturday and sunday). So my saturdays conflict with Walmart. My boss has been on my case at Walmart about it because he doesn't have a lot of people. I need to work at Walmart because it is my 40 hours a week gig when vacation happens. But I want to work at the hospital too in order to get experience (hospital/other related pharmacy fields don't hire with this experience...but they aren't providing me hours over summer).

I don't have a car either so my parents work every other weekend and I had to call my boss at the hospital and switch my weekends. Currently both bosses aren't very happy with me. I have school monday to friday so there is no way I can work then because no transportation and my classes run all day and late into the night.

My mom was suggesting every other sunday or every sunday at the hospital or maybe I could just be on call. Since I am prn is there a set amount of hours I have to work a week? Do you think they would find that idea ok? Which idea is better? She is probably going to yell because she already switched my weekends previously, oy vay.

I'm only familiar with Wal-mart, but you have to be available to work at least 16 hours a week. They never have to schedule you that much, but you just have to be available. If you talk to a pharmacy manager who does your schedules, then you can request something like 'being off every other week' to go work at the hospital. If the hospital pharmacy doesn't work out, then stick with wal-mart until you want to quit that job and move to the hospital pharmacy completely.

hospital jobs are so hard to come by especially in this area. I hope i get another hospital job but I doubt it (the area I work at is in the ghettoest ghetto city).

My pharmacy manager was the one to tell me I have to work 8 hours per week...16 hours biweekly. I think she is lying because I know another student at another store....his pharmacy manager is kinda chill and he just works like one or twice a month.

This is an amazing story. You are a spoiled rotten ingrate. Let's see I work at company during school and during breaks they give me 40 hours per week. They are short of help and need me on weekends, but I got this great gig at a hospital so lets see how I can screw the guy that gives 40 hrs a week during breaks and still keep the gig.

You have two choices:

Quit your job at Walmart and take the job at the hospital. They are financial issues here, but if it's the experience you want and the career path you want to follow and it will help you get a hospital job after you graduate. Short term pain, long term gain.

Work when Walmart wants and ask the hospital to work around that. Short term gain long term pain.

In short you will be confronted with these choices all through your life. There are consequences too all of your actions. Decide what is best for you and get on with your life. You rarely get to have your cake and eat it too.

haha this is funny, i was almost in the same situation a year ago. Let me guess, you work at the ghetto ass wal-mart in south philly and the hospital is either Cooper or Lourdes in Camden (equally ghetto)? I remember seeing job listings a while back.

But anyway...where are you planning to be licensed after you graduate? What year are you in school? I had to hold out a while to find a hospital job (found one via one of your old faculty members oddly enough) and did so unemployed because I knew I would jump ship right away.

You said it yourself, hospital positions are hard to find. After talking to people on this board, getting experience on the inpatient side is more integral to getting a job at a hospital than is getting retail experience to get a retail job after graduation (you will give up little perks like extra vacation or more a choice in where you're assigned).

Take the hospital job and the income hit. If you're still early in school (P-1 or so), stick with Wal-Mart and keep shopping for a hospital job in PA.

P.S. wtf is going on at your school?? i looked up pharmacy intern jobs and a listing for Dean of PCPS/USP came up. you guys hemorrhaged some faculty last year and now a new dean is coming in? inquiring minds want to know the inside scoop. i've heard other things, but i won't air it out here, PM me for that.

Why don't you just ask your bosses? Ask one of you can do Saturdays, the other Sundays, and vice-versa. They will respect you more if you show them some courtesy and a responsible attitude.

P-2... pretty early on but not that early any more.

Hmmm I am curious about that too. Who know what is going on. It seems that everyone and their mom gets promoted at USP. Probably the old Dean of PCPS got a promotion.

That is what I was thinking but It is kinda weird to work in a hospital every sunday because usually their shifts are saturday and sunday. I am going to try and ask them...worse they can say is no and best they can say is yes.

I am not trying to screw anyone over. I want to work at both places equally. Even if I quit walmart now...i would probably be more of a douche because it would take awhile for them to find an intern to replace me because usually students apply during summer.

You are screwing someone. Right now it's both of your employers. That's why:
Currently both bosses aren't very happy with me.
See my comment on having your cake and eating too. Unless you are a savvy negotiator or a really good tech or both, you will have to choose. Life is about choices and facing problems. If you are note careful, you could lose both positions.

Sounds like you're in a somewhat fortunate predicament.

It doesn't sound possible to balance both with your life at the moment, so I would suggest you quit Wal-Mart and work at the hospital since you hinted that you are more interested in that for a career path.

Maybe the hospital will give you 40h during vacation, but if not, maybe you could find another 40h/week retail job during vacation and continue at the hospital on weekends.

Why didn't you figure this out before accepting the new job?

unfortunately i have a huge procrastination problem. since I was training on fridays i wasn't really worried. Only when I started being scheduled for the weekends did I worry

Plus my parents told me to stay on both jobs until end of December just in case I really hate the hospital.
