Just to clarify, are you applying this cycle or the next? What schools are you applying to, and which is your in-state?

This cycle hopefully when after I finish summer school but I am planning to just only apply to Virginia Tech and North Carolina State. North Carolina State is my home state school so that was my first choice. The cumulative GPA for NSCU is 3.0 so I’m going to get it higher.

You should check directly with NCSU to determine if summer classes count in your last 45 hours gpa. You don't want to waste either money or energy if your application is not going to be reviewed if they count summer classes and your last 45 falls below the minimum 3.0 gpa.

I'd also suggest that you carefully look into the average hours for veterinary experience for any school that you are applying to. Your current hours are very low (and don't think that your 17 hours for a pre-vet conference count as veterinary supervised hours). You might be better served taking a gap year and working full time at a clinic to boost your hours and help develop relationships with veterinarians that would result in stronger letters of recommendation in the long run.

Best of luck to you!

NCSU requires a minimum of 200 veterinary experience hours to even be considered. Unless you plan on getting those hours this summer, I would wait until next cycle to apply.

People definitely do get accepted to vet school with GPAs around (and even lower than!) yours but, in almost all cases, their applications otherwise are absolutely stellar and they make up for lower academics with lots of experience. Unfortunately, as has been alluded to by earlier posters, I don't think you're there yet and I would recommend waiting at least a cycle or two before applying. And, even then, I think that you need to select your target schools with a lot of care in order to give yourself the best chance of success possible. NCSU is a good IS school to have because they're so darn cheap, so you lucked out in that department.

For reference, I was accepted back in 2016 to three schools---one outright, two off of waitlists---with a 3.2 cumulative GPA, but my science and last 45 GPAs were quite a bit higher than that, and I had almost 2,000 hours total of vet experience alone (so that doesn't include animal, employment, research, etc. experiences). I was also extremely selective about the schools that I chose to apply to and did a considerable amount of research beforehand. That said, more and more applicants are applying by the year and things are subsequently becoming more competitive. You've got to find a solid way to stand out among the crowd, especially because your academics aren't great.

Like @blueheeler said upthread, you're most likely going to have to wait to apply anyway because NCSU has a minimum experience requirement to even be eligible for admission. It's more than possible for you to make the 200 hour minimum this summer if you really throw yourself headfirst into things, but also keep in mind that there are minimum academic standards that you need to meet, as well: Education – DVM – Admission Eligibility | NC State Veterinary Medicine

Factoring in your summer courses, it looks like your last 45 hours GPA does not currently meet or surpass the 3.0 requirement listed on that page. Because you are IS for the school, you could potentially look into the Alternate Eligibility route if you had some medical/financial/other life issues that may have hampered your performance, but I honestly have no idea how selective they are with that process and you would still need to meet all other requirements, including that for experience, regardless. So either way, you still don't presently qualify for admission unless you know for a fact that you will have the requisite experience by VMCAS close.

I truly think that it would be best for you to wait a year before applying; get your GPAs up, nail the GRE, and get the 200 hours of vet experience (and, again, I can't stress this enough: that is the absolute bare minimum---you will almost certainly need quite a bit more than that).

Being completely honest, I don't think you should apply for Fall 2020. Honestly, taking a gap year or two is not bad at all and it is not the end of your world (speaking from experience).

You didn't mention your science GPA, but I assume its probably slightly lower than your cum GPA? So even if you take summer classes and also obtain vet hours over the summer, I don't know if you will:

1) have enough hours to be competitive with other applicants(you have to realize that many applicants have thousands of hours),
2) bring your GPA up enough to be competitive against other applicants (especially with your last 45 being so low) who have more hours than you, even if they have around same academic stats.

Going to reiterate this here from what I said in a previous thread. Just as a point of helping you save money I would recommend against applying to CSU as they explicitly state on their website that few people are admitted with a GPA 3.2 and below and undergo early file review to even determine if you move on. Yes they like to see an upward trend but CSU is one of the most competitive OOS schools. I suggest perhaps looking into a school that better fits your stats-K state comes to mind. Applying smartly is half the process. Good luck!

Do you know of any stats for Kansas? I couldn't find any and chose CSU due to their application process and that there weren't any prerequisites that my school didn't offer. A couple of other schools I considered had courses that are not offered on my campus at Davis.

Yeah for some reason its not listed. They list the minimum requirements but no admission stats for previous years. Hopefully its a better option because CSU receives so many applications.
