If you'll read more closely, I was referring to FMG's as being universally discriminated against.

In my references to those programs that discriminate against DO's----the ones that I am familiar with are not located in the south.

Not at all. Youre the one making a statement that there is discrimination based on what PDs say to interviewees. I hate to break it to you, but PDs dont say **** to interviewees...at least nothing of importance anyway.

Talk to the residents...they are the ones that know whats going on

In reference to general surgery: The programs that discriminate seem to be those at major cities in major academic centers. It is clear what region of the country the majority of these are found.

In smaller cities and more community areas, it is less of a problem.

For the record, I am not applying for general surgery. Some of my statements were based upon those who I know that are applying to surgery. Other of the statements were more generalized to applying to residencies as a DO in general.

Alright my friend..did you talk to PD's all across the country. Also what's with your emphasis on foreign grads..first this is an osteopathic thread and i doubt anyone here would be worried about foreign grad students. In addition, your whole north south distinction is absolutely idiotic..demand gives rise to competition, up north there's a surplus of doctors hence lower wages and all the programs tend to be more competitive. In south, its the opposite. I don't know who this PD is that is brain washing you..may be you are right and to me you sound like a pessimist. Here's what i have to say to your board score comment, have you taken your USMLE's?!? Please do not complain if you are having a hard time to get by with your comlex score..it is a fact that if you like to prove to residency programs that you are on the same level as your colleagues..you need a common criterion (USMLE) unless in the future "DO residencies" become super competitive and open their doors to MD's, until then they are obviously never going to take COMLEX. My point is if you do well on your usmle's and go against a bunch of MD applicants with a similar score..you may still be fighting a uphill battle but it really won't be as bad as it would be without taking the USMLE's. Infact, i heard from all my DO friends that the difference btw MD's and DO's on the grounds of their USMLE score is becoming exceedingly slim. I have to point out though that your MD>DO criterion is absolute ridiculous..its those old school doctors and really conservative programs that might still think along those thoughts. However, many programs will tell you upfront just take your USMLE's and you will be fine.

1st year..i know i know people might go so he has no credibility. Well i base my opinions on things i hear from others and opinions i formulate through my DO/MD contacts. Anyways, i was also trying to back up JPH..he is usually pretty sincere about his opinions and i share some of his views..so figured i might as well chip in my own thoughts.

This wasn't about JPH. We know he has his experience, regardless of his initials. He's a good guy and he's helped me out on things, as well. I only wondered because the way you talk with such confidence is if you were a 4th year or an intern/resident. I just think that despite all of our contacts, we will not know for sure how things will turn about UNTIL we get to that level .. regardless of being an MD or a DO and attending their respective institutions. Just my $.02 ... I think that is what JPH may be getting at. If not, then so be it, that is still my opinion and I'm sticking to it 😎
