I'm taking mine in middle of July. I'm sooOooo scared. Good luck. September is a little late man. Earlier the better. Don't want to stress too much about this. Good Luck.

i took my at the END of Nov last year...and i got into decent schools..just do well that's all that matters...of course the sooner you take it the better...

i took the DAT last sept, and submitted my application at the end of sept. Everything worked out fine. If you haven't taken the DAT or are retaking the DAT i wouldn't submit my AADSAS application until I took it. That way the most recent scores are on your application. I know that AADSAS prints your scores on the top of your application next to your grades, and even if you have retaken the test most adcoms will probably be lazy, look at the top of the page unstead of finding you new scores on a seperate sheet.

no no no no no, send in your application asap...and then take the DAT if you're planning to do it late!!! I got two interviews even before I took my DATs (and come on my GPA was a measly 3.1) and once you take your DAT...schools will have your scores in about 3-4 weeks! and since they'll have the rest of your application... most other schools would be able to review it :)
plus your number will be lower
and nice fat letters would be coming in your mailbox before you know it.

i don't know if you should do this if you're retaking it

good luck :)

We seem to disagree.

I agree that your application should be turned in ASAP (mid-august at the latest), but I think its in your best intrest to have your latest DAT on there. Then again do what u like, its your life :D

StarGirl I am just courious as to how you did in your DAT I am applying this year and have a GPA of 3.02

stargirl, what schools did you get accepted to? do you think that there is a double standard when it comes to acepting males and females?

when i applied in the fall of 2000, i took my dat's and completed by application by mid october. i had an overall gpa of 3.3 in biochem at ucla with relatively high dat scores (aa-23, science-23). yet i was only granted interviews to 2 schools of the 6 that i applied: usc and ucla. the ucla interview wasn't even "real" because it was for an alternate position.

anyway, i'm glad that i was able to get into usc because it is my overall goal to become a dentist (i would've gone to the worst school if i had to). but to tell you the truth, i am a little peeved that my application was not given more consideration (i should mention that i also volunteered many hours at a dental office). anyway, congrats on the acceptance to a great academic school.

so i guess what i'm trying to say is, apply early folks. just because you get high dat scores does not necessarily mean that you will automatically gain acceptance into a dental school.

I took my DAT in January and was accepted to dental schools in March. Just inform the dental schools that you're about to take it and they should be fine. Keep in mind though that some schools will not even look at your AADSAS application until your application is complete with the DAT scores. So bottom line, submit your AADSAS as early as possible according to your academic credentials and submit your DAT scores later, you'll be fine!

Hi everyone
I'm going to take my DAT this summer probably around early august. Should I submit my application earlier(june) or just send my application when I get my score? I need all the advantage I could get. Any suggestion?
Thanks

It is better to send in your applicatoin asap to AADSAS. That way you will have a better priority number. Letter of Recommendations and DAT score can be sent in later!

Good luck!!!

i cannot stress enough how important it is to get your application in ASAP!!! don't worry about not having your DAT scores yet...just send in your AADSAS as soon as you have it completed. it's going to take AADSAS about 1 month to process your application and send them to the schools. so even if you do send in your AADSAS on the first day they're accepted, the schools probably won't get your application until a month later at best. they will offer interview invitations w/o DAT scores...

you will have such an advantage being an early applicant. you will get your secondaries first...which equals first round of interviews if you get them in ASAP.

my friend and i both applied last year. i sent in my AADSAS by 7/2/01 w/o DAT scores and she waited a month and a half later to send in her AADSAS with DAT scores. while i was already done with all my interviews by january, she was still waiting for invites! so, that's just a real example of how getting your app in early can be more beneficial than waiting for DAT scores...

just my 2 cents...

May 31 .... eleven days and counting <gulp>!

Seriously, the hardest part about preparing is seeing my scores flucuate. On some practice tests I've scored extremely well, and others not so well. Example:

TopScore: OChem 26, Reading 27, Biology 23
Kaplan: OChem 20, Reading 22, Biology 19.

Granted, the difference between a 26 and a 20 may only be 2-3 questions, however I'm having trouble facing the fact that my true DAT scores are going to be determined by the random act of the computer drawing questions from a database. Easy questions and I get a 27, more difficult and I get a 22.

Point in case: My friend and his cousin both took the DAT on the same day last year. My friend scored a 20 on and claimed there was *difficult* material on the exam, while his cousin scored a 27 and apparently answered all of the 40 Bio questions in nine minutes. Seems pretty random. Oh well, on May 31 I'll find out!

gavinc,
you are suffering from unneeded stress. if you study hard for the dat, you will reap the fruits of your hard labor. just to let you know, the 20s you are talking about may seem low compared to the 26 and 27s you are scoring with the topscore, but they are great scores. (the score itself doesn't matter. the percentiles do.) and another thing... when i took my practice kaplan tests a few days before the dat, i was scoring just about where you were. my real dat scores were higher.

Yeah it's definitly a random process. I almost lost it when I took my last practice exam 2 days before the DAT. 15 on both gchem and orgo. Heart attack waiting to happen. I'd never scored that low. Anyways, on the actual exam I got 21 and 22 and that's generally what I've foudn happens. People's scores go up on the actual exam. Best of luck.

Well, 10 days and counting now. Thanks for the good luck wishes and your insightful posts. I'm just hoping I don't get many questions about plants!

Back to the studying!

I'm taking the DAT on the 29th. I don't even want to think about how little time I have left to study. I want to call and reschedule but I really just want to get it over with and try to enjoy some of the summer.

Go GTChick,

Enjoy your summer. I wish I could take the DAT earlier, but I have classes right now and I'm not even ready. There is just so much you can cram. Just think positive and take it. Good luck.
Please do let us all know how you did, that goes for itsGavinC as well. Even though he is kicking ass right now.

PS: How did you prepare for your DAT? How long did you prepare?

Does DAT only cover General Chem, O Chem, Biology, and without "Physics"? I am pretty surprised about it!

No physics on DAT!! Thank God!!!

Gavin and GTchick,

Good luck on your upcoming DATs, I look forward to see you guys join the 20/20 club soon (the perfect vision club  )!!

Good luck Gavin & GTChick! I still haven't scheduled my DAT yet, but I'm thinking I'll take it in mid July. I've got LOTS of prep to do for the O Chem section.

I want to thank everyone for the support. I need it today because my gen chem score is looking pretty awful on topscore. Does anyone know of a good review for gen chem besides the big Kaplan book?

GT Chick,

I only used the Big Kaplan book, and I scored well on the DAT. I never used Topscore either... just paper tests.

Don't worry about lower scores before the DAT... I was getting much lower in the practice tests, and then, I did much better on the actual DAT. I guess it's the pressure of the test that makes you do well!

Good luck,

Bucky
