Davis Final Decisions

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all, was just accepted at Davis and wanted to share my info. I interviewed in late March and just received a phone message from my student interviewer saying I was accepted and that I would receive a package in the mail soon. Interestingly, I had emailed my faculty interviewer at the end of last week to tell him I would definitely choose Davis over the schools which have already accepted me (which he had asked about during my interview). Don't give up hope, 'cuz they're still accepting. Good luck all!

I guess this confirms my theory that they aren't necessarily going in chronological order - unless all you people from February also heard today.

It does seem to indicate that a LOI might have an effect. Or that depending on which group of adcom people is reviewing your file you might hear sooner or later independent somewhat of when you interviewed. Congratulations in any case to mbdubyah!

I guess this confirms my theory that they aren't necessarily going in chronological order - unless all you people from February also heard today.

I think others have established that there are multiple committees that meet to make decisions... so decisions are only roughly chronological depending on which committee you go to, etc. But that is surprising that someone from March heard. Perhaps they are making some headway!

To everyone in this thread: I'm sorry the wait has been so onerous. Rumor (and it really is just a rumor) has it that in addition to the move (which did set them back; the admissions office was all but shut down for most of December), the adcom wanted to "try something different" this year. In the past, the class was pretty much full by February or March. This year, I guess they wanted to hand out fewer early acceptances so that no one was "interviewing for a wait list spot." I don't think this has worked out as they hoped. Here's hoping you all hear very, very soon. :luck:

As a corollary, with the intent of making this process more student-conscious, the admissions process has alienated a good number of really unique, passionate, interesting applicants (yeah, that's right, I'm in that boat). They are fortunate that the school does have the allure that it does, because few schools (for me, anyway) could have gotten away with this (I withdrew from Mount Sinai for better treatment than I've gotten from Davis).

I still think that the wait will be rewarded for those of us who are patient and that this is going to be a really great (though slightly bitter) class.

I think kbear is right about the multiple committees. As to trying new things this year, evade kinda tickled a memory from my interview day. They said that my interview group was to be handled by the Surgery department (and my faculty interviewer was from the surgery dept), so that the different departments could get more say in picking the new medical students. Apparently in the past, the Medicine people had been getting the lions share of the interviews. So having the different departments dealing with different students may mess with the speed with which they are reviewing the applications.

As for the fat envelopes, I really do think the acceptances come when you least expect them. They come when you haven't thought about it for a few days, and then you get called by a mysterious phone number on your cell which you assume is just a wrong number. Thinking about it just makes the agony so much worse. *shrugs* I know there's not a lot for me to say that makes this sort of wait better, but you guys are all a real cool group of people, and I want y'all to know that I'm rooting for you.

i've heard about waitlisted applicants getting contacted the day before enrollment saying that they're (finally) accepted.

how long are you guys willing to wait before deciding that it's not worth the move anymore?

just curious.

My pride says maybe two weeks before Davis would start, but in reality it would probably be the night before. It kills me to admit this...

it really depends on how far along with the moving process I am. If I am already settled on the east coast and my SO has already re-located and found a new job, I really don't think I could move back west so quickly. Luckily Davis starts before my other option so hopefully that situation won't come up.

I am in the same boat as kbear except without the SO to worry about (mine is definitely staying in CA since he has a year more of school himself).

I will still be here and would go if they called me the day before. The problem is mentally preparing myself. I don't want to mentally prepare myself to stay here, so I am planning to move and getting mentally set to go to my other school.

Hey all,

I interviewed in December and still no word back. It seems that every time I call admissions they give me the run around. I hope I hear back soon.

I interviewed at Davis a couple months back and havent heard anything since. Like many of you have mentioned, I tried to contact them for the past couple weeks, but have been getting the run around (emails not being responded to, vague responses over phone). Furthermore, while interviewing there, I was not informed of how the application process would continue, except that they were still accepting people. I was wondering if any of you have heard anything as to a deadline date when people would be notified if they had been accepted, rejected, or waitlisted?

Thanks

Okay, somebody has to convince me to keep waiting for a decision by Davis. I like the school a lot, but this wait is killing me. Is this how Davis is going to become more selective? By waiting until everyone withdraws out of sheer frustration so that they don't have to offer as many acceptances?

what are your other options if you don't wait on davis?

I see that Davis has given out acceptances and rejections and placed others on hold. But has anybody been put on the waitlist yet? Or do they only start placing people on the waitlist after the class is full?

Two comments: (1) Emory is an awesome school so congrats to whoever was admitted there. (2) I was told that there wouldn't be any waitlist formed by the adcom until after May 15th. Whatshisface Dagang said that.

Okay I lied one more comment: I also would go up to and including the first day of orientation 😀

Wait, am I reading this correctly...so far, no waitlists has formed and applicants have only been accepted, put on hold, or rejected at this point? Is that right?

i would wait till the day before orientation too.

upstate, my default choice, doesn't start till aug 20th or something, so i guess that works out.

I know we all really want to know by now but sheesh, June? That seems rather late for me.

almost may 15... hopefully there will be some big movement tomorrow. not that that makes june seem any closer for the holdees, but it's something

I seriously doubt that May 15th makes any difference at all in the Davis admissions experience. They are still wading through stacks of applications, so time-wise it will almost certainly have no effect (I predict). I guess the only difference I can think of is that maybe it will result in a few more acceptances instead of waitlist positions for those of us still waiting to be reviewed, but since we won't hear until June or (gasp) July anyway, I think May 15th will just be like any other Tuesday for our little band of disgruntled travelers.

Can anyone confirm whether they have actually handed out a full complement of acceptances, i.e. one acceptance for every spot that they will have in this years class? Obviously there will be students that withdraw, but I'm wondering if they have even selected their "ideal class".

I just called the admissions office. Not that they gave me any new information but I figured I'd let you guys know what they told me. The woman I spoke with said that they were still working on reviewing January and February interviewees and that it was going to be 10-12 weeks rather than the 6-8 weeks, like they'd said when I interviewed in early April.

I had called to let them know I'd be out of the country for the next week but with that news I figured why bother. Ugh, so I guess that puts me in mid June at the earliest. Awesome.

Yah, awesome 🙁 arggggg... how does one maintain patience through this long waiting period?

for the hold people that translates to hearing sometime in mid-september. the waitlist will probably form by the end of october. this is ridiculous

This made me laugh. I actually envisioned getting a call a couple of months into the school year with Davis genuinely thinking that it was perfectly normal to pull of the waitlist so late.

"hello, calcox?"

"this is the uc davis som adcom. we are calling to inform you that you have been placed on the waitlist. we should reach a final decision in the next 6-8 weeks." -10/07

LOL!

Not too to offend, but normally this wouldn't be so funny. But I think I am at the point where its just like 4am the night before a final when you and a buddy are cramming and you both realize you are f****d and you start laughing uncontrollably for five minutes. (A lot of you probably didn't have those moments, but I'm a non-trad and unfortunately I had too many of those...)

oh look it's may 15th!

maybe if everyone else, who is too tired of waiting and want to make a final decision today withdraws, they can get to us!

sigh... i can dream right?

Heh, I've actually got one that's almost as egregious. During January of first year, one of my classmates and I were in histo lab, when all of a sudden he starts cracking up. Apparently, Mount Sinai School of Medicine had just sent him an e-mail informing him that his application was "complete and ready for review."

Yeah, he was pretty excited about that!

Seriously though, guys, hope today brings you some good news. :luck:

I recommend sitting there and waiting for your donut to thaw.

LOL... I forgot about that. I ate it-a looooong time ago.

At least with today being the acceptance deadline I feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. These past few months have been grueling... Davis is our one shot this year. I just wish we knew what was going on with so we could either start the 08' aps. or use up all our vacation time for work and spend a quality summer with the kids before hubby ships off! I love the idea of him going to Davis- it's such a short flight from San Diego - it would be so perfect and the program there is everything he's ever wanted in a med. school. *sigh* 🙂

So, do we all automatically get put on the waitlist, holdies and people who haven't heard alike? Do I need to tell my other acceptance that technically I have some other, who-knows-what-the-hell-you-would-call-it status that I am dealing with?

gigatt-

davis is also my only chance for this year! i have been wondering whether i will be working/searching for a job or attending school next year for the past 6 months.

happy may 15th everyone

yep, happy May 15th to all. Although I'm ready for May to pass and June/July to come since I think that's when us holdies might finally hear something.

Calcox, I think we aren't technically on the waitlist (any idea when they make one??), but it may as well be called that. We can still be rejected, waitlisted, or accepted at any time.

Extremely last minute, but I just withdrew from Davis, so I hope that acceptance goes to one of you! Gluck all; it's a wonderful school. 🙂

I heard that they generate the waitlist after they go through all the applications and that this is when folks on hold can expect traction. Not sure if this has changed, though.

Tick-tock, tick-tock...

Thank you! I am sure we all wish the same thing for ourselves 🙂 Good luck to you wherever it is you have decided to go. :luck:

I can't figure this out, so I am going to defer to all of you and your brilliance, and all that rot.

Why are there so many of us on hold if there are only 5 people in the facebook group for the c/o 2011? Is everyone on facebook? No. I'm not particularly happy with myself for using it either. But if you look at the class pages for other SOMs, many have around half the class in their respective facebook groups. I'm not proud to publicly admit that I am deferring to facebook for direction in my life, but I'm doing it.

What is going on here? I read that 90-odd acceptances had been distributed before second look... That's less than half what they need to dish out to fill their class.

Are we playing hard-to-get? Cause I'm not afraid to buy them flowers.

this is taking too long..I am annoyed

Hang in there, everyone!!! I'm really hoping this long wait will pay off for us! And even if I don't get in, I know I will be elated to see others get in since we all know how terrible this wait is.

I truly hope that when June and July come rolling around Davis will sort things out. We are more than half way through May now! Chins up!!

kbear you seem like a sweetie. I hope you are right. And Steve, I also am annoyed. 😡 At least we know that when we are all admitted on July 28th there will still be plenty of people looking for apartments and roommates. 🙂

I received a phone call today from the (an?) Associate Dean of Admissions saying I've been accepted. He said they all feel really bad that it's taking so long to get back to people and that opening up the new education building did affect the admissions committee's progress. Just thought you guys might like to know that things are actually happening up there "albeit at a glacial pace".

P.S. I interviewed 2/26 and my acceptance here will open up a spot at UCSD for anyone who's interested.

P.P.S. Sorry I can't sound more excited. I danced around earlier when I found out but I just woke up from one of those naps that leaves you more tired than when you laid down 😴 so I probably sound a little like I was hit by a truck...

Good luck guys

Congrats, sunlight. Welcome to what seems to be a pretty elite club... Nice job...
