Davis Final Decisions

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just when I think I can't be any more demoralized about this situation, I find out I really don't know my limits for demoralization...

Good to see you, too, Xtremeangel. The waiting just doesn't end, does it? I feel like I'll be compulsively checking email well into winter....

Tell me about it! I used to have 20/10 before this whole process began...I'm pretty sure I'm like 300/??? nearsighted now (is that even possible?) from staring @ my computer screen.😛

How long does it seriously take to review a file?

THey only interview 400-500 candidates...what about the schools that interview like 1000!!!!

Why aren't they this slow?

usually i would say that slow review is a good thing. they don't just accept people based on numbers but really look into their activities, statement, interview feedback etc. but davis is taking this too the extreme... maybe they're doing full background checks through the fbi now. ha...

For my case, that would be a great thing. My numbers are far from impressive.
👍

The thing is, you can do an in depth evaluation of someone's full application in two weeks if you are diligent and on top of things. It never needed to take this long. Frankly, I am a bit annoyed with Davis' attempt to trickle acceptances over the course of the cycle. I'm a big believer that if someone was on top of things enough to get all of their application in early, April MCAT, asking for LOR early, rushing transcripts to AMCAS and interviewing ASAP when offered, they should be rewarded. The early bird should get the worm if they are qualified. Something tells me that eventually there will be applicants that have been strung along from early interviews that should have just been accepted to begin with.

That's my memorial day weekend vent...

When UC Davis says they interview 500 students...

Does that include those that were invited but decided not to go?

alright davis. long week's over. let's get cracking on those apps!

I think that if somebody declines an interview invitation, then somebody else is found to fill the spot. So, they do in fact interview 500 people.

I think it is 400. That is what we were told when I interviewed. 400 interviews, 250 admissions offers, 100-something spots (104?)

That sounds like what I was told by my interviewer.

I like the numbers on paper, buuuuuuuuuuut I'm still on hold 😡

So am i. And as patient as I am, it is becoming increasingly difficult. It's almost June and I still feel like I will never hear back from them.

Hang in there. 🙂 I know this is hard and we're all feeling it but keep your chin up and try and stay positive.

How many of you holdies have acceptances elsewhere?

Count me as having one acceptance in the Midwest. But, if I get a golden ticket to UCD, my equation is perfectly simple: (Calcox) + (Davis Acceptance) = Calcox @ Davis.

Out of curiosity, how many of you are hoping to get into Davis, but have a school at which you are waitlisted that you would go to instead if bumped up on their waitlist? Or, are all of us really, fully committed to Davis? Something tells me that the because of the nature of message boards (shared community without strings attached) that there are probably some people professing their love for Davis that would ditch them if accepted somewhere else on their list. No judgment, just curious.

As of now, I would give up my current east coast acceptance for Davis. But as time moves on, things might change as I have a significant other who is probably leaving his job soon and we need to put deposits on housing, etc. It's harder to pack up a second time and switch schools at the last minute when you've already convinced your partner to move once. sigh.

I'm holding an acceptance in the mid-west but would attend Davis, if accepted, in a heartbeat.

🙂

I hope the ad-com reads this and accepts me 😀

When I was visiting at second look, the dean said they got 5000 applicants and interviewed 500 people this year. I remember looking at MSAR for 2005 and they had ~ 4000 apps and 400 people interviewed. However, there has been an increase in applicants to all med schools in the U.S. for 2007 so I guess UCD is maintaining there: 1/10 applicants are offered interviews ratio.

I'll keep beating the Davis drum up until the semi gets loaded with my wife and I's apartment headed for New England. I'm willing to do what it takes to attend school at UC Davis, but I won't uproot/move from coast-to-coast twice in one month.

I'm with you, kbear. My wife is at the stage that she's fine with moving wherever I think is the best medical school. But she wants to know WHERE. It's an even harder waiting game on the partners.

When is the last time anyone's heard of an acceptance from Davis?

Hey guys,

Last time I heard was a week ago. Any clue on when the committee meets up? I interviewed late and it is getting into the 9th week of waiting for me. How long did you guys wait? I would attend Davis at the drop of a hat. I am fully committed.🙂

Someone earlier in the thread indicated that they are meeting 2-3x/week to hurry things up. I was surprised, as I haven't been seeing a lot of movement (yay or nay) on threads like these...

7 weeks for me...

Sigh...500 interviewed? That makes the ratio harder for us =/

I wouldn't estimate the number of UCD accepted applicants by SDN posts. Last year there weren't that many posts either, but the class was full for quite a while. I don't know what it is, maybe Davis applicants stay away from SDN. Even after getting in, there seemed to be only a few of us that lurked the SDN boards. Other schools may have a lot of posters on SDN, but that school might accept and interview a lot more people.. (think Drexel for example). Davis interviews WAYY fewer students, which gives fewer potentials to post on these forums. Plus all the incoming Davis students are already busy studying for USMLE step 1, so they don't have time to post on SDN (that's a joke).

There are quite a few incoming first years that have been emailing our distribution list looking for housing, etc. so I think that plenty of acceptances have been given out, but there are still more to come. In the grand scheme of things, believe it or not, it is still pretty early. (now you're saying YEAH RIGHT FIREBIRD!!) It's June, and the class should be wrapping up everything by mid-July. A month and a half is a long time!! Every day there are withdrawals and more people invited to join the class of 2011!

Last year I was in the same boat - I needed to know if I was getting into Davis, otherwise possibly move out of state with my sig other. ADVICE: Keep Davis open, don't ever shut the door. You'll be glad you did. Plan on moving, but if at the last minute Davis calls and gives you that acceptance, TAKE IT!! You'll be glad you did!!

Good luck

It has been 10 weeks of waiting for me... double the time they said it would be on interview day! I would go to Davis, no matter where I was or what I was doing at the time.

Hey guys,

There are still spots left. I am hopeful! Let's all think positive. KurlyQue, I am in the same boat!

UCSF interviews and accepts about the same number as UCD and there's a LOT more traffic on that thread of acceptances. About 5x more. There are plenty of Davis-interviewee posters on SDN. Just a surprising few who have gotten answers back.

Either the folks Davis accepts aren't on SDN or Davis is pretty far behind in their acceptance cycle. Given that most folks here haven't heard yay or nay, I'm thinking the latter.

Your schemes must come in grander sizes than most. By June, most schools I know of have accepted/rejected/waitlisted all interviewees and are working through the waitlist. There are folks here on the thread who feel a bit of frustration because they haven't heard back from their interviews in February.

I do understand that Davis has gone through a move this year and they are behind. But I wouldn't pretend (nor do I think that Davis is) that to have a huge stack of unevaluated applicants in June is business as usual.

Best of luck to all waiting...

Postive thinking is a great idea. Davis has not gone through the applications of lots of folks from the Feb/Mar/Apr interviews yet. There are lots of spots available out there, it's just going to take longer for them to fill than most schools.

A big move of any company or school can be a nightmare through no fault of the folks moving. Davis may have had a tough go of it and are still playing catch-up. That makes it tough for lots of applicants this year, and increases the nailbiting, but shouldn't diminish anyone's enthusiasm for UC Davis.

Think of Davis as a delicious dinner served about an hour late. No one likes listening to their own stomach growl, but in the end, hunger is the best sauce. It's still a great meal.

Notdeadyet, I'm not trying to single you out by any means as you are always even-keeled in your posts but I am really starting to find it funny how this thread has gotten more and more cranky over time. Believe me, I have done my fair share of venting here. It started out so positive and happy, and I find it funny how we are all so frustrated.

No doubt. I like to think I'm dealing with the waiting like a pro, until my wife looks up at me expectantly each time I check email, wanting to know what side of the country we'll be moving to. And since she's a teacher, her possibility of finding employment for the next academic year is dropping rapidly. The thought of her doing an office job she hates while I'm hardly there due to med school decreases my talent at waiting patiently.

I hear that. I do think SDN is fulfilling its role nicely, though. A forum is a nice place to go out and blow off steam. The alternative is to interrupt a friend in the middle of a story in some bar, grabbing him by the lapels and yelling "WHEN WILL I KNOW?!?!?" That's a buzz-kill for everybody.

One thing to remind ourselves is how lucky we are to be taking that next step. In your mdapps I can see you are bit on the non-tradish side as am I. I used to want to be a doc as a kid but left that thought behind for a long while. I forget sometimes that eventhough I might have to go far away for school which is a little inconvenient, at least I am able to head on a path that I chose rather some some crappy career that I happened upon, a path that not everyone that wants to follow gets to follow, and that one day, while not a perfect career, will allow me to help my family and my patients. Pretty f*****g cool...

Notdeadyet,

Just a word about UCSF and SDN posts, not only is it likely that they are a little ahead of Davis in the admissions process (whodathunkit?), the school's circumstances just select for gunners (no offense to any UCSF hopefuls reading this). Davis has a reputation for being pretty laid back . . . and UCSF has one for having a balls-to-the-wall-hardcore-we're-better-than-everyone-else attitude. So while it may be true UCSF has a lot more posts, I *speculate* it might well be because of the hyper-competitive and slightly OCD demeanor of the students selected to go there:laugh:.

(for the record, that's about 40% serious, and 60% joking; hopefully the UCSF dig got a rise out of someone, and made the wait just a little more bearable).

haha i interviewed at both schools and it's so true. even a couple of months into the term, ucsf lecture halls were so full... i'm not even that good with classes w/ required attendance. ha. my davis host had people over to study but they just ended up hanging out and chatting instead. such a difference.

ucsf is a better ranked school. but to be honest, i liked davis' atmosphere a lot beter.

i'm holding an acceptance in ny and am on another waitlist. my future is all over the place?...

oh i got a question about multiple waitlists. so if one accepts me, am i obligated to withdraw from everything else? or can i accept that but still maybe wait for the other waitlist?

When you are accepted off the waitlist, you are obligated to withdraw any acceptances (by now you'd have 0 or 1), but not waitlists. This is why you still have waitlist movement well into summer.

Unless your acceptance is to Davis, in which case you'd be a fool to pine elsewhere. But that's personal prejudice.

Huh. That definitely hasn't been my experience. But most of my experience with UCSF is form working there for a few years back in the late 90's. Maybe the personality has changed a lot since then. Back in the day I was surprised how diverse, quirky, and laid back the student body was.

Just got my rejection email (interviewed in April)

Good luck to everybody else! I am off to Michigan :hello:

Salsera!! so sorry to hear. you have been a great support here. The good thing is that this isn't going to drag on any longer for you. Best of luck to you in Michigan!

Thank you kbear. That is very sweet of you 🙂 Now that my initial sadness is over I am very excited to be able to plan my move and commit to a school mentally. Limbo is a big suck as you guys all know. I am off to buy a parka now. 😀 Suerte to everybody else!

Salsera, where in MI will you be going? I might be there too! 😳

Just got an email rejection today from davis. April interview here as well.
Good luck to those who got in- you got a great school!

wow...this is not a good day for alot of us.

you know, I don't think there are many spots left though. It's June. Maybe the limited spots is the reason?

*anxiously waiting* but at this pt, I'm so nervous, I don't mind waiting more just to postpone the anxiety.

So sorry to hear about today's slate of rejections.

SalseraDoctora- Let me know when you learn what those cold-winter types wear when the snow comes. I may be needing something warm and down-y for Vermont...

barcelona-bound- Hope you hear great things from your wealth of options you're waiting on. I'm sure you'll land somewhere wonderful.

Gigatt- I hope Plan B starts to look like an opportunity. Hope the closure at least gives you some comfort...

Also sorry to hear, GIGATT and Barcelona. Barcelona, we may both end up in the same place!

To everyone who hasn't heard post-interview: hang in there! i'm pretty sure there are multiple committees that make decisions and Davis hasn't really been going in order. But no news is good news!

To the rest of us on hold: It looks like Davis is making some decisions. That means they are closer to reviewing our stack of files again! hang in there!

oh man. sorry to hear everyone! but let us know where you end up going! good luck!!!

Let me know when you learn what those cold-winter types wear when the snow comes. I may be needing something warm and down-y for Vermont...

my personal choice would be a good ski jacket. it's warm and won't make you look like a marshmallow. and hey if you go to VT, there are some good mountains there. oh and definitely get a good pair of snow boots. i have my "winter" box ready to go with all these goodies if i end up having to go to snowy syracuse.

BUT. i'm still keeping my hopes up for davis and send that winter box to storage. they're making progress...

notdeadyet, I would definitely recommend getting your winter gear at Sports Basement in San Francisco. Don't forget the warm hat and a quality pair of gloves. Totally key. And you'll even need that for Davis since Tahoe is a short trip away. 🙂

i'm a total stalker. but...

there's still only 28 ppl in the facebook group. soo could mean that the class is still not nearly filled and many more chances for us.
