DDS + MBA ... what to expect ?

Hi there everyone....
1st I really wanna thank you all for the gr8 job here , I have been in this forums for a long time and the info u share are really V.helpful for everyone .... so keep on because u r doing favors 4 thousands of dentists around the world.

Now what I wanna ask about is really simple but though important 4 lots of dentists.
so I have a DDS degree from Syria but the problem is I don't get along with the practice , I hate every single minute I spend in the clinic😡 and sometime I even think of change my profession for good 😱, but then again I don't want to lose the advantage of such degree and the hard work and expenses for the past 6 years.
I am already 25ys old and to start over form 0 is no option for me , so I have been thinking for a while about taking MBA😎 , but I am not at USA yet , and I want to figure out this thing before considering any other options (none yet) .
so suppose I came (as planned ) to MI in the next few weeks and I take my MBA degree , tell my what do you think about that ,does it work ?
- what kind of jobs really can I get with DDS+MBA degrees ?
- will the paying be as good as a dentist (GP) ?
- what other advises can you give me about it ?
just tell me anything u know cause I have no idea what's gonna be like in USA ,
I have been working as a med-representative for 2ys in Syria just in case it matters .

Hi samoov, it is really difficult to work with something that you do not like but I know that a DDS from a foreign dental school will not qualify you to work as GP dentist in the US, this degree is part of many requirements that you have to meet in order to apply for the advanced standing programs in US dental schools(which is two-year program ), after that you will be able to practice dentistry in US as a generalist. I know that is not your question but that was a clarification for what do people with DDS from outside the US do. If you got an MBA from the US I am not quite certain that it will matter if you have a DDS or not in case you want to work in a position that requires an MBA.. If I were in your position I will finish the road to the end, I will get a DDS degree in the US then I will try to have a higher education in basic sciences like oral histology, pathology or any other specialty, maybe it is a long journey but you will not end in the clinic you may work in the academic level.. I do not have a detailed information about that in the US but it is just an idea that you can research about it..

In bangaldesh we see dentists ae working as professors in private and government medical colleges and university. MBA degree is not essential in that case.

Now why you want to leave dentistry? just because you dont like the profession or just because you dont like the practice in which you are practicing dentistry?
I mean is it the profession you hate or the place you work?
If profession then you should consider doing MBA. Now for doing MBA in US, you need to give GMAT for to be admitted to an MBA program.
Is earning potential also important? I believe yes, then you have to go to an awesome school which costs almost same like a dental program and ofcourse getting in there is competetive
Can you afford that.. the bigger question is: Do you like the industry or kind of work you might do AFTER finishing MBA?
That would help you decide whether you want to change your profession all together.
If you like dentistry and donot like the practice or place you are working in. Simplest thing is to change the practice and stay in Syria.If not in Syria, come and do DDS in US. (You know the whole procedure)
If you want to certainly do MBA along with DDS, then there are few options like NYU offer both of them together. Check those options and PM me if you need some more help.

I have a foreign DDS and a US MBA as well as a US MS degree, and currently I am working towards my DDS in the US. So, basing this note on my rich yet highly subjective experience I can say that....

If you don't like practicing dentistry in your country for any other reasons than social or financial ones, you won't like it here either. Don't pursue it here. Sound like you're not going to.

If you think that an MBA with a non-business BS/BA degree (including a dental one) from a foreign university will give you any unique path to success, also think twice. In my MBA experience, I found out that most successful with their MBA degrees are the folks who had already been on a business career route. If you're already working in a US company here in some business function, and your career can get boosted by getting an MBA, and your management agrees and supports it, yes... this is the way to go. Of course, there are exceptions, and depending on which area of business you want to specialize in, you may be able to build some network and reputation, find a job and be successful. Yet it is not an easy path, I assure you. If you're convinced this is for you, start talking to foreign MBA students now, and see what kind of issues and prospects they face.

Now, there possibly are advantages for the combination of a US MBA and foreign DDS degrees if you're trying to land a career with a US dental products company. Well, I have been down that path, and I can say again... they hardly will care about your MBA degree alone. If you can prove to them that your combination of MBA + foreign DDS + some experience (very desirable!) is unique, you may succeed on that path.

first to say ,my problem is not about practicing in Syria itself ,it is about practicing dentistry in general , so the main question in my life now to find an alternative career without losing the advantage of such degree.
I am thinking about Dental equipments or materials business , I am not looking for easy path nor for great income . I am after a lifetime career with the ability to progress .
I just didn't get these things :
1- are you saying it is much better to find a job then take the MBA or the other way around ?
2-what kind of jobs can I have in such companies with just my foreign DDS, TOEFL and some experience in dental materials business as a representative .
I think what you did is like what I am trying to do , in such case what you advise me to do? 😕

Sorry for the slow reply, Samoov. I understand that you're looking for a career alternative to dentistry and you would like to, ideally, somehow benefit from your dental education as well. I do understand. Of course, you can pursue the business career and quite likely you'll be successful. Start talking to current MBA students, take GMAT and prepare for all other requirements.

On the two points you're seeking clarification...
1. All I am saying is that people who benefit most from MBA degrees are those already on some sort of a business track. If you can find a business job first, it could be a better route, but... it might be more difficult for you now to find a job like this, particularly in the US, than actually apply and get into an MBA program. Do the MBA.
2. Related to the point above, it's really hard to find a business job in a US company without a business education here. Most business folks here either get their BA degrees in business first, and then work, and then possibly get their MBAs. Some grow through sales. Possibly you can secure a sales position with a US dental materials company in the Middle East first. Alternatively, again, just get the the MBA now.
