Dear gunlovers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would add a fourth. An AR style rifle with good ammo, not the cheap FMJ crap they force our mil guys to use. Good defensive weapon and it also is a good American weapon like the 1911. And it is the gun most likely to piss off a liberal and least likely to kill them.

Less recoil, more shots. Arguably more effective. A lot of the pros are getting away from the shotgun for all CQB scenarios, for good reason.

I like art that has some utility as opposed to just art. Why have a sculpture or a painting when you can have actual guns hanging on the wall?

too bad it has a powerful recoil - and I am not sure if I won't just shoot in the ceiling instead

I think a 12 gauge is really doable (at least in a field setting, not necessarily spur of the moment HD) for all but really tiny people or those with some kind of disability - proper stance and shouldering go a long way.

However, there are 12 gauges with very manageable recoil. General factors decreasing recoil - increased weight, semi-auto action, and recoil reducing stocks. Take a look at

Alternatively, stepping down to 20 ga cuts it down even more and leaves you with plenty of stopping power

I second the option of a good 20ga for someone who has a lighter frame. Still plenty of power while being a little more manageable.

Hoyden, I'm a relatively small guy and hardly super muscular, but I was able to handle the shotgun I used during my class. I handled a few unloaded ones before I found one I could use for the class. Stance, positioning of the stock, and a right sized gun/proper grip for your body will make a big difference. I was able to handle the recoil of a 12 ga. We fired slugs, bird shot, and buck shot. The shoulder was a little sore the next day, but not majorly so.

I don't own one because I Iive in an apartment -- a handgun is better for me. But don't give up on a shotgun because of recoil. If I can handle it, you can definitely handle it.

Thanks.

Well I am a small woman, so it is kind of hard to keep it still, especially with a pistol grip, but I am trying 🙂

Interestingly, I always thought you are a woman too

I am all for the 2nd amendment, the right to own a gun, right to defend your family, your home, your safety ect.... but does anyone really have a problem with there being restrictions on assault weapons, high capacity magazines and background checks before purchasing a weapon? I for one, see no use in these types of weapons outside the military and was personally glad that obama had the stones to sign this legislation today. What did everyone else think?

What would be the best weapons to oppose government tyranny?

Yeah, but the KA-CHUNK of a pump shotgun will make 99% of intruders think twice as they wet their pants retreating.

Yes. I have a problem with these restrictions. But before I respond in detail, let me ask you a couple of questions so that I understand what you already know and what you mean.

1 - when you say that you are "all for the second amendment," what specifically do you mean. What right, specifically, is affirmed by the second amendment, and why? What weapons do you believe that it allows us to have?

2- what is an assault weapon, and what military uses this type of weapon?

3- what "legislation" did Pres Obama sign today? (No need to get super specific, just the general gist)

4- what type of firearm can legally be purchased without a background check as of today?

5- should I be required to run a background check on my shooting buddy before selling him one of my guns or if we are trading guns? Who should pay for it?

OK we have fully moved on to political debate but thats ok I really appreciate the articulate responses to my original question and it has helped inform me greatly. I personally moved quite a bit to the right on this issue having read your meaningful responses. However ads like the one the NRA put out today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bKw7ZsQgtcno matter what your position on gun control, strike me as fully *****ic. I would guess that more than anyone else it is offensive to the intelligent thoughtful gun owners and enthusiasts like yourselves. I understand your opposition to Obama but this has to be one of the dumbest ads I've ever seen.

The SW686 plus holds 7 rounds. It is made of Stainless steel which means it won't rust very quickly, if at all. You can put one of these into your night stand with 7 hollowpoint rounds in .38 ammo (I use .38 plus P in mine) and never worry about cleaning it or racking the slide.
For non gun lovers the SW686 is the perfect bedside companion along with your flashlight and trophy wife.

The best thing about a SW686 or Ruger GP100 is that they go bang every single time you pull the trigger. I had a friend with a ten year old SW Revolver take it to the range with ten year old ammo. The gun was sitting in his closet. Every single round went off without a problem.

In certain climates rust is an issue due to humidity. Even if you don't have a humidity issue the revolver can be abused, ignored and even abandoned for decades but she will always come through for you.

Best of all the SW686 plus is legal in every state in the USA.

I do not have any problem with NRA ad - it does not show obama's kids, it just mentions them - and it is true - so what is the problem with that?

obama used REAL kids today for his propaganda - now THAT IS distatestful

I know. That was one of the reasons )))

Dang, periopdoc totally beat me to it.

What is an assault rifle?

What legislation exactly was signed today?

How does the "legislation" propose to change currently existing requirements for background checks while purchasing a new firearm?

What legislation exactly was signed today?

23 do-nothing executive orders that allow Obama to declare victory and save face now that he's realized nothing he really wants will get through the House.

It's interesting to me that he didn't even bother to try to put the brakes on weapon and ammunition imports, which is arguably within the scope of EOs. Maybe he still will, but outside of individual state actions, I think we're done here. The end result, 250000 new NRA members and no new gun control, speaks volumes about what people really want vs what Obama etc say the people want.

Does anyone else find it offensive and ridiculous that letters from elementary school kids are being used to evoke emotional responses instead of allowing for any sort of rational discourse? Those third graders wrote whatever their teacher/parents told them to--who the hell would want their child to be shown on TV as a puppet?

As an aside, every minor shooting that occurs anywhere is getting way more press coverage now, giving the illusion that a spree of gun crime is occurring in an effort to rally public opinion against the second amendment.

I have a hard time believing ANY elementary school-aged child, on his or her own, absent an assignment from school to do so, wrote to Maobama regarding gun control.

And if there ARE some, then it is just as likely that there are some that wrote and said "don't you dare take my daddy's guns away!".
