How do you afford to live in Palo Alto? I'm considering residency there but the costs are insane! If you know any residents, how do they survive if their entire salary goes towards rent? Is it easy to find roommates?

On a side note, is it a single-friendly location?

Palo Alto I would not say it's very single friendly, not compared to big cities. Palo Alto has got more of a nice and expensive suburban feel to me. But you can easily go to San Francisco.

It is very expensive to live there, but yes definitely possible to get roommates and that's what I would do.

Does Stanford have subsidized housing? I know a few of my friends who matched in expensive areas had subsidized housing.

Why would it not be "single-friendly"? Are there mainly couples who reside in Palo Alto? Is San Fran a different story?

All the Stanford residents I know have roommates. One recently told me their portion ranges from 1500-1700 each.
I just moved out of PA right by Stanford, and we had a 3bd for 3500/month not including utilities, believe there are quite a few houses in the 3500-4000 range, you’ll just need to find roommates.

PA is definitely family oriented, it’s an upper middle class suburb. I moved there as I have children, but am a UCSF student. Recently moved to SF so that clinicals will be easier, and it’s most definitely more singles/young couples w/o kids.
