I wanted to ask anyone that if I wanted to pursue a competitive residency in the future (Osteopathic or Allopathic), which would be the best choice regardless of cost or location. And in best I mean, best basic science organization/preparation, clinical sites, clinical rotation didactics/teaching, residency program opportunities, etc.

In competitive residencies I more specifically mean G-Surg, Ortho, ENT, Rad/Onc, Derm.

1) TUCOM-MI
2) UMDNJ
3) AZCOM

Out of those 3 schools, I would say UMDNJ, because it has all those residencies if you include there allo school, So you can easily get face time with the program directors in those specialties. IMO, radonc will be a miracle, derm is possible since we have our own programs but still very tough, the rest can be achieved if you work hard enough.

The one thing that will mean the most as far as getting one of those competitive residencies is rocking USMLE Step 1. Not COMLEX, USMLE Step 1. So choose a medical school whose curriculum and academic calendar is compatible with that goal.

And remember, there's a rather large difference in the curricula of medical schools.

Very much agree with Old_Mil. Whichever school you decide upon, work hard, do well on your exams, rank near the top of your class, and score highly on the boards (USMLE & COMLEX). Each school has people in its classes who are competitve for the slots you listed and people who aren't. If that's what you want, make sure you put in the time and get it done.

I would take Toohot's comments about what's a miracle with a grain of salt. DOs matched to programs this year that many people would have said would be impossible if asked four or five years ago. It's tough to say where we'll be in 2011 or 2012. Good luck.

It would seem all 3 schools are comparable. Choose the school you would be happy at, not which one puts out the most surgeons. In the long run, you will probably do yourself no harm as long as you are willing to put in the work and effort.

As it is at ANY school in any part of the country...

For radonc, you're going to want some relevant research under your belt. UMDNJ would be the best of the three for that. At UMDNJ you have all three campuses available for research opportunities although I wouldnt' want to live anywhere close to Newark if I had the choice lol. SOM is in a fairly nice area in close proximity to the Jersey shore :D

Radonc is not a miracle...several people have done it in the past 2 years from DO schools(check out residency match lists). I believe individuals were from DMU, AZCOM and KCUMB matching Radonc at all allopathic institutions. Someone matched in allo Derm this year also. There was also a match into allo neurosurgery this year. Nothing is impossible for DO's anymore.

What is your opinion based on?

1. Because it probably has the least spots of any residency.
2. No AOA program yet.
3. DO schools aren't necessarily big in ground breaking cancer research.
4. When someone does get radonc from a particular school, that entire matchlist is deemed awesome (SDN phenomena).

But a couple miracles happen every year. I just wanted to stress that is was going to be a very challenging journey.

You were a lot less anal before you matched (atleast I think so). Besides, nothing I said was completely incorrect. There are very few spots, and maybe a couple of the more estabished schools do some cancer research.

That's more accurate. I think one of JP's pet peeves is broad, sweeping generalizations...

I think one of JP's pet peeves is broad, sweeping generalizations...

Particularly by those who have not been there yet.

ie: premeds talking about medical school, 1st years talking about rotations, 2nd years talking about the match

In this case we have a premed talking about the match

For example, I dont go to the intern lounge and start yammering about what is the truth and "how things are".
