I just wanted to start this thread about how freaking great I feel now that I have started doing what I love. That's right I am a newbie to the field and have a exhiliration that I get everday I wake up and realize I am doing anesthesia. After having to deal with political crud throughout my department and being the one caught in the middle, after having every young CRNA after CRNA show disrespect towards me, after having attendings assuming I have no clue what an endotracheal tube is or how to put monitors on a patient; I am still so freaking excited to come in day after day waiting for the next case to sink my teeth into. Man I'm hungry I have been waiting for this for so many years. After I place in a tube, an epidural, put in an US guided nerve block and central line, and those always elusive a- lines I get this rush of adrenaline that courses through my veins that flashes with fullfillment which makes it all worth it. When I get to go home after a long day which really isn't that long compared to other residency programs I can help but realize I picked the best field there is. Guys/Gals I am lovin it, I hope this lasts forever or at least till I am done with my residency. :soexcited:

Good for you! Unfortunately this feeling will not last throughout residency. Everyone gets beat down at some point. The key is to realize that its only temporary and it does get better. I was definitely burnt out toward the end of CA2 and CA3 year. But even through that there were always those moments where I realized that I loved my job. Of course, now that Im in private practice thats pretty much every day now 😀

The good news:
This pleasure you get every time you do a procedure and things go smoothly will never go away.
It will get less powerful over the years (like all the other pleasures 🙂) but it will always be there.

Dr. Plank

only you would put it so eloquently👍

Man, tell me about it....it's sometimes tough as a resident to just get beaten down. At this point there's a lot of just 'bowing your head' and taking it. But I guess that's medicine in general as a resident.

Glad you are enjoying yourself, i think anesthesiology would be perfect without two issues.. the crna vs md debate and surgeons..😀
