Default way to withdraw?

What's the general way to withdraw? I'm on a waitlist on a school I like, so I know the feeling & so I want give up my place ASAP.

Via e-mail?

Sometimes schools will have a place to withdraw your app on their application portal. Other than that, email has worked for me when I withdrew from schools.

Last year I visited a school in person and requested to withdraw. They insisted I send them an email. I didn't have a smart phone, so the secretary let me get behind her desk and use her computer to send an email to her, withdrawing my application.

It was awkward. 🙁

Srs. University of Colorado. I happened to be driving by the Anschutz campus one day, and I knew I wasn't going to matriculate there even if I was ever offered a slot.

Email is not the most secure medium - imagine the damage somebody could do if your email and password were ever compromised. Or if somebody just forged an email to make it look like it was from you.

Wait- now that I think about it

How was withdrawing IN PERSON?!! kinda like breaking up?

"It's not you...it's me"

Or

"I've found someone else"

lol

Sazerac, oh how I wish we'll be going to the same school. Pure comedy. I think this is the funniest thing I've heard on SDN

Well, I was moving to New Orleans at the time so I didn't really have a home yet, and happened to be driving by the school. It wasn't clear how to withdraw via their website, and I just thought it would be cool to withdraw in person, you know, be man enough to turn them down like face-to-face. Instead, some office worker wound up rejecting my in-person rejection. I didn't feel like going away empty-handed, so I did what I could.

I went from cool to dork in like 10 seconds, as I bargained and groveled my way onto the secretary's computer just so I could complete my mission "in-person". I guess it was pretty funny for everybody else in the office.

STOP it.

That's LEGIT.

Yep, if they don't have the online portal option, then a simple email will suffice.

Unlike other types of correspondence (where it might take a day or two for a response), my withdraw emails have always been acknowledged within a couple hours.

SRS business!

They rejected your rejection?

What I imagine happened:

I want to withdraw please.
"You're not allowed to withdraw in person. You have to do it via email."

You deaf? You heard what I said. Write it down.

SAZERAC OUT!

^ obviously the problem has to do with having a record of it. I'm sure the receptionist understood the situation. Why you would waste more than the 60 seconds it takes to send an email to withdraw from a school is beyond me.

this is definitely a YMMV.

I've had anywhere from a couple days to a month.

Hanging out on these boards is beginning to give me immense confidence in my own social skills.

To OP, as has already beed said, an email is the way to go when the school lacks an online method. Just ensure you include your AMCAS number. I've always formatted mine like a business letter and often use some form of "it's not you, it's me" (e.g., financial aid) while conveying that it's a difficult decision.

Although, unlike some of the others that've posted, several of my withdrawals didn't respond to my email at all.

GL!
