I received an offer from a medical school (MD program) for class of 2012,

After 6 weeks of class in the school, late September 2008,, I encountered some family problem and need to transfer back to school in my home state.

I have communicate to the dean of the medical school, and he kindly allowed me to be on leave and reapply, while securing my spot.

Because of the late application ( completed in early December 2008) and the fact that my undergrad GPA is not stellar (3.35 from a top 10 school). I was not able to secured any acceptance from the med schools I applied to this cycle (2008-2009). So basically, I been on leave in med school for a year still w/o any acceptance offer.

My family has been very important to me, and I cannot just stand and see the problem engulfing them.

My MCAT score is 37 (11V, 13P, 13B), but my GPA is only 3.35, I attained a 3.8 during my 2 years in a Ph.D program, but then was average out to a 3.6 because I have taken some grad class as a undergraduate but only receive B/B+.

My question is, if I remained on leave for another year, and be completed in early June, how much more likely will I receive an acceptance?

Is family problem a legitimate reason to defer and re-apply? How much disclosure should I provide in my AMCAS application?

How does my GPA (3.35) and MCAT score (37) put me in term of competition.

I am in a serious dilemma right now, and appreciate any input

I don't get it, the school you deferred at didn't guarantee you a spot?

In the very-rare situation where a student successfully transfers to another med school, it happens after completion of the second year with a decent Step I score, assuming you are leaving the school in good academic standing with a supportive letter from the dean. Since you've only completed 6 weeks of med school, you would not be transferring, you would be reapplying. Your MCAT certainly compensates for your low GPA, but red flags that might keep you from an acceptance at another school are your non-completion of a grad school program you were in and that you have already matriculated at a med school and left it (they might not read long enough to find out why). Another negative factor is that you would be citing family issues as a reason for reapplication without being able to reassure adcomms that the problem is resolved and would not effect your ability to focus on med school studies. You would be viewed as a risk. I think your chances of acceptance to another allopathic medical school are low.

Why not move your family closer to your current med school?

How long is your current school willing to defer your restarting med school? How long do you anticipate it will be before the family problem is resolved? I think you should do what it takes to keep your current spot available.

But, to help you make a decision: Have you considered meeting with a dean at the med school close to home and asking him/her to assess your chances for getting in there, considering all your issues? Did they accept you during your first application cycle? You haven't given us much information about yourself. If your many years of research resulted in a cure for cancer, you might have more going for you than a strong MCAT score.

My guess: pretty low.

You will also have the "black mark" of having matriculated at another med school and then having withdrawn. Plenty of med schools will not bother to understand the circumstances behind this, and some will draw a negative conclusion from it even if they do bother to understand.

All of this, combined with your unbalanced numbers, will limit your success. Also, you are not applying with the intent of getting in "anywhere" but at a school near your family, so your chances will be greatly affected by the # of schools that fulfill your geographic needs (i.e., I assume you are focused on a handful of schools as opposed to applying to 50 schools).

You better make damn sure the med school that gave you this extraordinary gift is willing to extend it for another year. Have you been in regular contact with the dean, or have you simply been going about your business without really staying in touch? That deferment could easily vanish on you...don't assume it is a standing offer to resume your med school career a couple of years down the road.
