Hey guys,

I'm choosing colleges right now but not really sure if I should apply to accelerated dental programs now because I'm being persuaded to do pharmacy. Everybody I talk to says that there's too many dentists around and the cost of education and the cost of setting up my own practice will cause me to spend my life paying off debt. I'm paying for dental school so debt is a HUGE concern. Can anyone( esp practicing dentists) tell me whether the debt is a myth/fact????

First of all, have you even shadowed either of the professionals?
Second, dentist's income potential >> pharmacist's income potential
All the dentists I've seen had no trouble repaying the loans.

Oh and most importantly, get into that accelerated program first and then worry. And no harm in applying.

its funny how people say pharmacy over dental...ive never heard that. Pharmacy has recently been talked about as being very saturated and not the career it used to be.

Good advice...I hear there is a real shortage of Pharmacists...🙄

In all seriousness there will be people who advise you for or against all professions depending on their "experience" with them.

Every dentist I have shadowed or spoken with (about 10-12) LOVES being a dentist and wouldn't trade it for any other profession.

Just live frugally for the next 5 years. Things will get better after. That Maserati can wait.

The way I look at it dental school is a great investment and you have the potential of making a very decent salary and so you should have no problem paying off the debt.

You should go ask the dentists in the dental section. Most of us here are predents or even dental students so we may know a lot of things about dschool debt but none of us here has even begun to pay it off.

go to law school and enjoy the miserable life! dentists dont have debt issues, so either you have no experience in this area or you are simply speaking out of context.

The dentist that my mom works for has 3 sons in medical school and never took out any student loans for them.
Im assuming he does pretty well lol.

After dental school your income all depends on you, one of the great things about dentistry. If you work your butt off, are good at patient relations and good at business then you can write your own paycheck. I know dentists that make 100k and some that clear 1 million, up to you really.

Some of the specialties are also pretty much no brainers 250k, day 1 out of residency as well.

As far as saturated, there are some PLACES that are difficult to get your foot in the door but Nation wide, a shortage is present. If you are willing to go anywhere for work then you will be more than fine!
