Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone else was struggling with the difference between challenge and adversity essays. To me, challenge essays are something you took on, and adversity is something you cant control such as discrimination. I was thinking of writing my challenge essay about a soccer injury I suffered and the path to come back to playing even though it scared me, and for adversity I wanted to write about my grandma getting dementia and having to be a caretaker and deal with her cursing me out, etc. do i have the right definitions of them? Do you guys think these two are decent essays for each?

TBH I think you could easily perceive those words and synonyms and give the same response to both prompts, but ultimately the whole point of these essays is to show what you think--so this is fine.

They are very similar. Not that this is a universal definition among adcoms:

Challenge: throw your darts at a target to win

Adversity: your competitors throw from half the distance that you have to traverse; whoever hits the target wins.

Read the prompt. While it is okay to have some ideas ready, until you see what the prompt is, you don't know what the school is looking for. It is too easy to spot the generic essay that was not written with the prompt in mind.
