They say that SA loves research. Baylor is the best at clinicals. Houston has the new building and really emphasizes the family atmosphere. Honestly, it all comes down to you. Go where you feel most comfortable if you are fortunate enough to be given a choice. Even though Baylor is strong clinically, all 3 schools will produce competent dentists. The best dentists in my area are Houston and SA grads.

On a side note, I know of some people who chose their schools based on the attractiveness of co-eds. lol

SA just built a new four story clinic building and they are in the process of moving into it right now. Should be fully up and running this fall, I believe. So SA facilities are now the newest (2015), followed by Houston (2011), with Baylor (2002) trailing behind.

Aren't the facilities only available to like D3s and D4s though? Or do D1s and D2s get to use it for preclinics as well?
 
About to be a DS1 at San Antonio and I hear they love research, but I had 0 hours of it so it's definitely not a deciding factor! Houston seems like it's the place to be, but I'm from there and probably would have ventured out if given the opportunity with other tx acceptances. Honestly, you can't go wrong anywhere in tx, but San Antonio definitely has the best scenic views over Houston and Dallas! (Not that it matters)
 
I've been able to tour all 3 in the last year. Everything that has been said before is pretty much what I've gotten out of them as well. As for the new San Antonio building, I was there in the spring for their predent day and they said the new building is just a clinic and admin offices. The first 2 years (including sim clinic) are still in the old building and the last two years your in the new clinic most of the time while still having lectures in the old building. The new building is right down the road, maybe a 5-10 minute walk and is an impressive structure (you can go online and look at the floor plans), looks very similar to the houston building.

All 3 Texas schools are beyond amazing. It all boils down to preference on where you want to go. I've only personally visited and toured at UT Houston and loved their family atmosphere (they bash other schools a lot... lol especially SA... something about having no windows :thinking:)

What do you mean by "family atmosphere?" Lol sorry if this is a stupid question. I'm thinking you mean students who have their own families (SOs and children) would like Houston. Or did you mean the dental students are like a family?
I'm mostly interested in Houston and Baylor. My cousin just graduated from Baylor this year and mentioned that if she could go back and do it all, she would have chosen Houston since the politics of Baylor are changing. Not that I think she regrets having gone to Baylor in the least.

I'm not sure where you got SA being scenic. Actually, compared to Baylor, it is very scenic.

Lol. I wonder how Houston girls compare to Dallas girls. As a Dallas gal, I'm obviously biased 😉

I do want to venture out of Dallas, but from what I hear, Houston (the city, not school) isn't all too different. It's just more humid.
I've only been to Houston 3x in my life.

In my opinion it's scenic haha. Grew up in Houston and have been to Dallas numerous times because of family. I like the San Antonio/Austin area best. Mainly because of the hills. Plus San Antonio is close to New Braunfels which I love. And I love Mexican food and you can't compete with San Antonio in that category.

I thought you were talking about the dental school itself, not the general area. I definitely agree that central texas is the more beautiful than houston/dallas.

The family atmosphere means that they truly care about you as if you were all one big family. Kinda like Full House haha. Not that the other 2 schools dont care about you but at Houston you get the sense that although you are going through hell, you are not alone. Faculty knows this. They will always lend a helping hand and will encourage you. They will take care of you. Also, the alums are always in contact with the school so you can bet the family tree is pretty big lol.

I just realized I sounded like Im trying to sell Houston to people lol but the dentists I have met have told me this and Dr. Pierpont has emphasized it many times.

What politics are changing at Baylor if you don't mind elaborating?

Ohh gotcha, thanks for the clarification! Well, now I kind of want to go to Houston lol.

I honestly don't know too much, I just recall her saying that many of the "good" professors of Baylor are leaving to go teach at Houston. Something about changes in budgeting and finance; new management so to speak. Not sure if it applies to students or to faculty there though.
 
I went to all three. I liked San Antonio's (city) environment the most and I also thought the students were the most laid back there. I also liked Houston's school a lot and the people there seemed pretty cool. Baylor was the worst in every way in my opinion. The students and faculty seemed uptight there and the building is just a giant, eggshell colored box.

Baylor was actually my first choice because I'm from Dallas. I was really hoping I would like it, but there really wasn't anything about it that was likeable. I hope you like it more than me tho!

I always hear how the students are uptight at SA but not at Baylor. Then again, that was a few years ago and things must have changed.

Well, that was just my personal experience with the less than 10 students and faculty I met with at each school. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me. I'm just throwing out my two cents
 
For anyone familiar with Texas admissions- what would one's stats need to be in order to have a reasonable shot at being accepted to Baylor if out of state?

LOL same. I will go wherever I'm so lucky to be accepted! I do have that hypothetical thought of "If I got accepted to all three, where would I choose?" Choice is both a freeing and scary thing.

Baylor ultimately is still a good school and my cousin didn't speak ill of it. Just mentioned that she'd do things differently if given the chance, but that is a fanciful thought we all have... about anything haha.

Choosing between the 3 TX schools is like choosing between the 3 Pokemon starters. Once you pick one, your life will change.
It's a nerdy comparison but I mean hey, we're on the pre-dental forums. We have to be nerds. lol

i forget what they call it, but houston puts students into groups/blocks. from what i understand you'll be paired with a hygiene student, a d3, and a d4 as you work in clinic and progress through the program. i think thats what family atmosphere is referring to.

I didnt have the option to choose between 3.
And If I get to choose between Houston and Dallas, I'm debating on whether commute 30 mins to Houston or rent a house in Dallas. Which one would you choose?

If I am ever blessed enough to pick, I would pick Houston. I love the family atmosphere and how they take care of their students. The dentists in my hometown are mainly Houston grads and are considered the best in the area. Plus, it's also closest to home(2 hrs) so my parents can visit on the weekends if they want 🙂

I've been trying to avoid giving this question any thought until at least Dec 1st... I'm afraid of getting my hopes up for one in particular.

It's like thinking about the gender of an unborn baby when it's too soon to tell...

"I'll be happy with an acceptance from any Texas school" = "I just hope it's healthy" 😉
 
Can someone give an estimate in cost of living for Baylor?

Is that it? I read that tution and fee already ~20, so I dont think it's only 22-23 with housing.
 
The paper they handed out at the interview says est school expenses is ~23k/yr and est living expenses is ~24-29k/yr for a total of ~50k/yr. This is for TX residents.

Honestly, wouldn't really have a good idea where to start. All of the dentists I've shadowed say pick closest to home, the schools are pretty much on par in terms of making you a competent dentist. So that would be Houston if I get blessed with one, but it's also the most expensive cost of attendance. So idk if an extra $45k +interest worth of moral support is smart. Although, I still think their facility is better than SA's despite the new clinic building. Meh. I just hope I even get one to bite.
