I wanted to make this thread cuz we've had a slew of threads lately asking, "Is this appropriate for my diversity secondary?" or "Is x diversity and/or adversity?"

Diversity implies mingling with people from different countries, cultures, and/or religions. Your diversity essay should show how you can get along with all types of people.

Adversity means hardship. Everyone has had their struggles at some point. Pick something appropriate that stands out and show how you handled it, as well as how you grew from it.

Yea I agree with you

Diversity doesn't always have to be about culture or ethnicity, but can also be a unique and useful trait that adds something to the Class.

Playing piano would be an example

I have to disagree only in so far as the number of piano players in a given medical school class might approach 25-40%. While your "diversity " may not make you unique within the class, an attribute that is not uncommon would not contribute to the diversity of the class. If you play tenor sax or tuba, that's a different story. 😉

I’m an individual. I don’t share with anyone the exact same life experiences that have shaped the person I am today. I’m one of a kind. Diverse AF

That's the right approach.

The fact that this is uncommon sense is what I find most troubling about society obsession with group identity and the current political climate. I pity the person who defines themselves or lets other define them by things they have absolutely no control over.

I feel like it's a phase that will pass

But to get back on topic--technically, everyone is an individual, so this shouldn't be so hard
If you're college-aged, the odds are that you have interacted with enough people to tackle the diversity prompt, as well

If you are an ORM and also from middle class or upper income family, your diversity essay has to be based on your life experiences not other identities. So don't worry about PC and focus on the secondaries.
