I found out today that I was selected to do research in DMU's Summer Undergrad program (I know I'm not an undergrad, but that's what they put me in because I'm not technically a medical student yet). I'm supposed to work with Dr. Terriann Crisp. Do any of you DMU people know her?

The biggest problem is, I'm trying to figure out what I am going to do next year. We are still trying to decide between staying in Iowa or going to Michigan State next year. She had the Iowa State Vet College visit last Saturday and really liked it, but she is really hesitant because Vet School is $26k/year because she's out-of-state. We are planning on deciding by Saturday.

-=Eric

Dr. Crisp is really the reason why we now have a superb Pharmacology department.... She a wonderful and lively person, inside and outside of class.

Students who work with her are guaranteed publication with a summers time, not just abstracts either.. 🙂

So you're in great hands!!! It would really shine in your CV to have worked with Dr. Crisp.

Just wanted to wish you luck, Eric, with your decision. I know its tough to have to chose.... I'm sure in the end y'all will make the right decision.

Good luck!!!
JP

Hey everyone,
I had a quick question. During my interview I got a copy of the 2002 match results, but I would like to look at 2 years to just get a better idea of where students are doing after graduation. I tried calling DMU to get a copy of either the 2003 or the 2001 results, but everyone keeps saying that they either don't have that data. Do any of you current students happen to know how I can get a copy of another years match results?
thanks
Jenny

Steven Grekin, D.O, clinical professor of dermatology at DMU!
He talks about retinols.

Anyway, thought I'd share that with y'all...😀

Seems strange as his practice is in Warren, Michigan!?!?!?!?

DMU does not have a dermatologist.

Alumni might have this data, but from previous years I don't think other departments kept track.

You can try to call the alumni association but they're really busy right now.... it's worth a shot.

Later 😎

Forrestave... are you a current student? or soon-to-be student? or someone who seems to have it against DMU 😉

Anyway, I haven't notice you post at all before.... and if you're trying to show proof or something to that effect then I refer you to the AOA website.... DMU does have dematologist, but it just happens not to be Dr. Grekin....

Steven Grekin, DO did graduate from DMU-COMS so in a way he's one of DMU's great physicians

Here's the search in the AOA directory I found on Dr. Grekin if you don't believe me...

JP,
I've spoken to forrestave before, and I don't think he has anything against DMU, in fact, he knows quite a bit about it. Except for the dermatology part, apparently!

Forrestave, that's exactly how it was written in the magazine, that Grekin is from DMU-COMS. I was just quoting it. Thanks for the clarification though.

Hey Jane, I called them. I talked to a very rude, very studpid lady. Ok maby stupid is a little too much, Inept might be a better word. I think that I'll probally end up staying some place else. Oh well what to do. I think that just from word of mouth Windsor Terrace is probabally high on my list. I'll have to install a window AC unit though. Talk to you later Jane.

Oh JP what's your wife up to now. Is she finished with her masters.

Any body match into neurosurg in 2002

I didn't mean to offend forrestave.... Hope he didn't take offense to my postings... 🙂

Please don't take it that way.... 😀

Prad, my wife went to Univ of Chicago through a ONE year masters in humanities program.... so she's been with me throughout my second year .... actually she's been here at Des Moines since I broke my leg from skydiving 😀 (that's a story on its own)... so when y'all do an ice breaker for your orientation and they ask you if you know of someone that skydived and they emphasize a person that broke their leg.... that would be me.... They had this during last years orientation and I found it hilarious.... 😀

Anyway, she teaching at DMACC. She has 4 classes of composition courses that she teaches. She actually going to be here for the summer to teach yet another composition class but it has a computer component to it.... 🙂

That's cool. Is she going to move to Ohio, or stay and man the home front?

Sorry about the slow response here.... I'm at DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College) in her office and stepped out for a few minutes to go eat at CHILI's 😀

Yup, she'll be able to move to Ohio with me... so everything is working out better than what we anticipated....

Hi JP! Thanks for the info on ABS! Oh, I didn't think your post to forrestave was offensive at all, but it's just that I think there's more to him than what he posted here. That's so cool that your wife can go with you to Ohio! So, what do we actually do during orientation? I'm getting really excited, I'm about to meet all you folks! 😀

Eric, congratulations on getting selected for the summer program! It sounds great! Are you planning on doing more long-term research after school starts? And good luck with your decision. It's a tough choice, but you can't lose with either of these great schools.

Prad, the 3000 Grand people really are weird! I'm with you on that, I don't want to have to deal with them in the middle of classes. I guess it comes down to the Imperial or Windsor Terrace.

Orientation changes every year.... Some of the highlight:
- Meeting the top doggies (administration) of the school
- Meeting with your faculty advisor
- Meeting with your big sibs
- Having read/performed/blatantly in your face ETHICAL/MORAL issues you may face as a student --- THE STUDENT HONOR CODE!!! Made by students, for the students
- Get acquainted with the campus by doing a "hunt" - its one of those breaking the ice thing....
- Sign up for your courses
- get your financial aid CHECKS!!!
- Parking permits
- Pictures taken w/a white coat for picture ID (The ID is the access to the building as well as going to your SPAL and other shadowing opportunities)
- Panel of upperclasspeople (notice I'm being PC 😀) so you can ask everything and anything you want w/o censorship.... it's usually one of the better parts of the orientation as we can blatantly be honest w/y'all....
- Issues on Notepool - election of your notepool committee
- Issues about Student Government - Yes, you will elect your cabinet already as it is imperative that you do....
- I realize that there's so much that I can't begin to start typing them down.... 😉

Within the next couple of months they will post up the schedule of orientation on the web if they haven't yet.... I checked out the website, for y'all, and notice that it's not up yet.

Otherwise, I suggest being comfortable throughout the day as it will be LONG.... I do mean LLLLLLOOOOONNNNGGGG 2-3days.

I told this to some of the first years this year and many of them still dressed up and by the second day they start dressing down.... 🙂

SO be comfy, sit tight, absorb everything you can and remember this is not a race but a jog with your buddies.... You're all in it for the long haul so saddle up....

I just realize.... I like to use a lot of cliques 🙂

Goodnight....oppss.... I guess good morning to all....

My wife and I just got back from watching THE CORE.... very thought provoking and emotional joy ride throughout the movie.... I give it not a thumbs up but a 80 degree thumbs angle... 😀 It was a good movie

My computer went from being normal and healthy to feeling general malease, dyspnia, and pain radiating from the hard drive to it's virtual memory which improved with the admisitering of AOL version 8.0. The computer was subsaquently admitted to ICU of Prad Memorial. While in ICU the computer sliped into V-tach, but was cardioverted by Gurki Sing, B.Sc. ( neighbor who is Comp Sci Major) and returned to normal sinus rythum. The computer seemed to be improving and showed all signs of bing DC'ed from the ICU. However, things started going wrong some time between 0450GMT and 0530GMT on April 2nd. The computer started throwing ST elevations and multi focal PVC's, it was all down hill after that. The computer was pronounced @ 0614 GMT by Pradeesh George, G.E.D.

😡 Who took away one of our stars? I noticed that some of the other class threads have 4/5 stars too. What's up with that??? 🙄

Thanks for the great post JP!! Orientation sounds awesome! I saw The Core too! Interesting concept, good acting. Overall entertaining movie 😀

  Prad....you're too funny... Sorry about your computer. It's time had come. You couldn't do anything more for it.

Hey Jane, yea, I know that the computer was soon to die, I just hoped that it would last untill I got my new one from DMU. I wonder if I can get my computer before orientation.
Some jacka$$ probabally got on and just marked no stars... Screw him/her, we know we're all that!!!

Hey JP around what time do people stop going to lecture? I've been talking to a few people they tell me that they never go to class, they use that time to study.

Prad,

Yeah, they're just jealous that we can have class threads and we just have cooler people in general! 😀 After reading through that thread about the differences between DOs and MDs, it just made me really thankful that I have the chance to be a DO. I really thought that it didn't matter either way, and it probably doesn't, but the worst thing anybody can do is to tell me I can't do something. Because then I'll want to do it even more.

It's a good idea to ask if you can get an advance on your computer. Assuming they'll have them ready for you before orientation. It couldn't hurt to ask.

JP,

Is most of orientation held indoors or outdoors? I don't think it would be very pleasant outdoors, with the heat and humidity 😎

Some people do chose not to go to class.... For the first year, you will miss a lot if you don't go to class. But I can understand how someone can simply skip class and do absolutely fine if not better in all your classes.

Second year, a lot of the second years stop going to class right after spring break.... again, a personal choice, so you miss out on images regarding diseases process and medical equipment, etc.... You can always rely on notepool to fill in the gaps for you.

There are also lecture tapes available.

I'm not going to suggest skipping but if it suits your learning style then that's a personal choice you have to make....

Most of it is held indoors but some of the activities will require you to move around campus....

heat and humidity isn't as bad as I thought it would be, but needless to say it's still hot....

It's going to rain this weekend. It always rains when I actually have plans. 🙁

Anyway, have a wonderful weekend, everybody! 😀

We're fallin' down the list of threads here 🙂

AAhhhh, this must be the sign that everyone's about to come to DMU and makin' plans....

This is what happened, slowly but surely, in our old Class of 2005 thread....

Next thing you know y'all would be here....

Bumpin' the thread up.... 😎

Hey I'm still here! Although it does feel like it's just you and me, JP. Cuz of Prad's computer problems. And there's so many new threads these past couple of days. Hard to keep up!

How's everything going JP?

Hey guys how's it going? Jane did you end up doing what you wanted to do this weekend? I'm heading off ot Santa Cruz tommarow. Gotta jet.

Hey Prad!

Well, I had to do what I planned for this weekend, because on Saturday, there was a farewell party for one of the post-docs at my lab. So it was pouring when my friend and I were walking to my PI's house, and we were drenched up to our thighs. My poor jeans! And it was pretty nice today, just a few showers.

Why are you going to Santa Cruz?

Hi everybody! Add your name to the list in the "Where is everybody going?" thread in pre-osteo! It's just Prad and me now for DMU, so go on...add yourselves...😀

So, we had to make the decision this weekend. (I'm referring to either staying in Iowa or skipping to Michigan) We had been talking about it for most of the week--weighing the options. We finally decided to go to MSU for several main reasons:

-We will save around $120,000 combined over the next four years
($27,000k/year out-of-state at Iowa State X 4 + $27,000k/year DMU X 4 vs $12,000 x 4 MSU Vet + $20,000 x 4 MSUCOM) The numbers might not be exact, but they are ball park.

-We will be in the same town (versus the Des Moines-Ames alternative (45min-1 hour apart for those who didn't know))

-There was no guarantee that I was going to be able to stay in Des Moines for my 3rd and 4th year, and even then, we still wouldn't be in the same town. Where at MSUCOM I have at least a greater chance of staying in Lansing. I know that I could have gone to DMU for 1 and 2 and then gone to Lansing for my clinicals, but even that was a gamble.

Anyway, those are the main ones. I'm not trying to bash the school in any way, shape or form. I really like DMU a lot. It was a hard decision. This was just what we felt was the best decision. And there isn't much sense arguing or any of that because I already withdrew my application and acceptance.

Thanks to all of you for being nice. It would have been great to be classmates with you. I hope you enjoy the city and the school.

God Bless.

-=Eric

Hey Eric,

It sounds like you made a great choice for all the right reasons. We might not be classmates now, but we'll be colleagues in the future! I wish you and your girlfriend all the best of luck at MSU, and keep in touch with us ok?

~Jane

Good luck Eric.... Best wishes and success in all your endeavors....

See ya' 'round,
JP

Hey Jane, I did'nt make it out to Santa Cruz today. Had some problems to deal with with my bank.

Hi Prad! What are you up to? I'm just watching TV, AIMing...I'm sooo bored...

I haven't been to Santa Cruz in a long time. I used to go to the boardwalk a lot. Fun place!

Sorry about being bored. I came to my parents place today. It's spring break and I'm bored. Did JP mention Winona Apts as a decent place to stay?

I don't remember anything about Winona Apts...where did you hear about them? Are they close to campus?

 for Spring Break!! 3 more weeks of work for me...then I'm FREE...until school starts, that is!

Jane, I think I asked you this before, but how much were they asking at windsor terrece? Does the apt come with a covered parking space?

No I was just looking on venturellc web site. The place is only 4 blocks away. I'm heading out there pretty soon and my dad and I are just trying to figure out places to hit.

I didn't call Windsor yet. That's the place JP and Kimberlee are living at, right? I'm pretty sure that for any covered parking, there will be an extra fee attached.

There's a 1bdrm open at the Imperial, last time I checked. It's on the 2nd floor. I'm still holding out for that 3rd floor unit! hehe... It looks like Venture has a lot of property in Des Moines.

there will probabally be more openings as time goes on. I'll let you know how my hunting goes.

Yeah, let me know how your visit goes! Right now, I'm sort of hoping I'll like the Imperial, so I won't have to look anywhere else.

You should take your parents' computer back with you!!

I wish I could take my parents comp with me, but they've gotten attached to it. You would'nt happen to have Hotel Savory's phone number do you?

Sorry! I'm staying in W.DSM when I go. They should be somewhere online. Google?

Ok, it's (515)244-2151.

Googled it!

Cool thanks Jane, I was just getting a renal car. Good night Jane, talk to you later.

Prad

Sarah,

What are you up to? When are you planning on moving to Des Moines? I'll be moving sometime in June.

Jane

I am very excited about finally getting out to Des Moines. I have never been to the northern mid-west, and I have been dying to see the school! Any advice for my up-coming trip and interview at DMU would be greatly appreciated. Also, how long should I expect to wait before I hear an answer from the school after the interview? 😀

Good luck on your interview Valmont. When is it? Just relax and have fun, it's a really fun, stress free day. You'll get a talk form the Dean, Becky Grisom, Dr. Muller, Dr. Boesler, and a bunch of others. Then you go on a student tour of the campus and then go to luch, and finally the interview. Just be your self and enjoy.

Hey Valmont! Good luck on your interview! Just do what Prad (Docgeorge) said and it will be a good day. The interview itself is really fast, like 15-20 minutes, with 2-3 interviewers. There was one semi-ethical question, but nothing really stressful or tricky. I heard back from DMU 10-12 days by email afterwards, so it's a pretty quick ordeal. When exactly is your interview?

15 to 20 min. DEAR GOD! I am use to getting grilled for up to an hour or more just by one interviewer! It would be great if they told me right after the interview. Right!---fat chance of that I know. But, that way I could start looking for a place to live.

I will be coming up on May first. I interview on May second, and will stay in town until May 4th to look around. If I get in, I will miss Charleston and the ocean like crazy, but I am getting excited about the possibility of living in the mid-west for a while. It will help round me out.😎

I really like what I am seeing of DMU and the near-by outdoor activities.
😀

Also, how many people go through the school at a time together on interview days?

Valmont,

Hey, I think you should know that my interview was a regional one, so I went to Las Vegas(yeah, baby!) instead of Des Moines. So, my experience could have been a little different than what the on-site interviews are like. But, I don't think the actual interview would last more than 30 min. My interview group was about 30 people, but it might be smaller for you. Do you think you'd go to DMU if you got accepted, or are you deciding between a couple of other schools too? I can't wait to check out life in the midwest too!

Prad, you're going to be in DSM the first weekend of May too, right?

Weeellll---hummm

Yep---I belive that Des Moines is the winner. I just got the rejections from USCM and MUSC. I have yet to hear from a few schools and the only other schools are Irish. So, guess what----this southern boy is about to "go west young man" if they ask me to! I would love to go to Ireland, but I don't know if that would be a wise choice over staying state side.
