Hi again everyone!

Sorry it has taken me so long to post a reply...I really appreciate the warm welcome and info from you guys.

Jane - In answer to your question, I am not exactly sure yet when I will be moving to DSM. I am waiting to hear if my friend gets accepted and then will start making plans. If she gets in I will live with her...otherwise I'll have to start looking for a place for myself.

Valmont - Good luck! I think the others covered all of the advice I had=)

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

That's a good plan! I'm pleasantly surprised that there'll be a lot of Californians in our class. It'll be just like home 😛

Valmont,

Ireland is so cool! Although, like you said, it might be wiser to stay in the States for school. I've always wanted to just trek all over Europe, and hopefully I'll have a chance sometime in the future.
~J

I must say, everyone here is so very nice and helpfull! If this is a taste of what DMU is like then I am sure I am making a good move, and will be glad to come if offered the chance!

😳 Aww, Valmont, how you flatter us...😀

I got that warm, fuzzy feeling at my interview, and I just knew that I would love it at DMU. I mean, we have a long, hard road ahead of us, but at least now I know that I've got some really cool peeps to share it with!

Sara(califroniasky) where in cali are you from? Valmont, there will probabally be 10-12 people at your interview, at least thats how many there were at mine. How is charleston these days? I spent some time there but I did'nt get a chance to enjoy charsleston to the fullest.

Hey here's a thought, since we have so many californians at DMU, it should be renamed UC Des Moines. Any thoughts?

UCDM huh? If only we could pay in-state tuition rates as well, then it would be so perfect!! I was talking to a friend about debt, and he's "only" going to owe like, $60K when he's done cuz he goes to a UC. 🙄 Their tuition got raised to $12K/yr because of all the budget cuts, but still a damn good deal!

Would be nice to pay instate tuition, but you I thinkabout that sometimes, but then I tell my self that I could be paying nothing. I think I prefer be 160K in the hole and be a doctor rather then be debt free and be Prad Geroge, GED😀

No, no, no you got it all wrong Rick, the output is urine😀 😀 😀

You know what, I took that medical specialty test and it tells me I should be a urologist. Maby I should just stop fighting it and accepct my fate. Prad George, Dinky Doc. I suppose with time I'll get used to the sound of that.

Do you have a moving date set?

Well, we don't have a place yet, but Kelly is going to Des Moines with her Dad in May to start looking for a place. But we plan on moving the first week of July. The only bad thing is that we will be gone for around two weeks (July 18-Aug 3). We have to go back to St Augustine to see my family and my sister is getting married, so we won't really have that much time to get used to Des Moines. How about you, have you set a date? And have you found a place to call home?

Dinky Doc huh....Maybe we should go into a practice together. Dinky Doc and Dr. Dicky--->Curing what burns ya!

 You two are hilarious!

Rick, are you going to drive up to Iowa when you move?

I thought I was the only one that noticed that Renal... 🙂

Speaking of which....

What's does UTI stand for? = Urinary Tract Infection
What's the most likely organism that causes UTI? = E. Coli
What antigen does E. Coli uses to inflict UTI? = Ki Antigen

And that my find Future DMUers is brought to you by the letters U, T, and I

😀

On a brighter note, DMU has won several awards this year....

We have placed multiple students into AAO and AOA Committees....

UAAO has one for the first time "Outreach Service Chapter of the Year."

SOMA has won the covetted AOA most spirited chapter for all its work surind National Osteopathic Week.

A first year SOMA member was elected the STUDENT MEMBER OF THE YEAR out of all the 19 schools.

Dr. Mueller, you may know him as the guy with the funny tie during your interview day.... as the TEACHER OF THE YEAR

BTW, there's more news to come regarding CLINICAL AFFAIRS.... They said that it will be the best move CLINICAL AFFAIRS has done for the student.... They will make the announcement tomorrow...

One more thing, the temporary building behind the academic center is almost finish and everyone is ahead of schedule regarding the plans for the new building.... There is no better time than now to attend DMU.... with that I congratulate you folks again....

I'm off to watch my taped MUST SEE TV with my wife.... Later gators, 😎

The renal car was a miss type, but I'm really bad with spelling You guys will just have to learn to read Prad! I have slight dyslexya and the only thing that it really affects is my spelling. To qutoe Georgie Patton, "any idiot can spell the same word the same way every time, but it takes a man of considerable geniuse to be able to spell the same old word a new way each and every time." I like to think that I'm just letting my genious show. 😀 😀 😀

Rick how about this for a sign, "The Dinky Doc and Dr. Dickey, we'll take care of all your plumbing probblems with a smile." and in fine letters, "Located at the corner of Ingersoll and Grand Ave. Buisness hours 11:00pm to 4:00am. "

I'm going apt shopping the first weekend in May. I'm hoping to move there the last week of June or the 1st week of July. Hope your good at teahing golf, cuz I suck big time. Any way how is that darling of a baby doing?

Oh yea, JP you have to tell us what they're putting out tommarow.

Jane, wuz up????

Absolutely on that news tomorrow.... As usual, I'll keep y'all posted....

Ya'll have a great Easter and I will see ya when I get back in town!🙂

Alas.... there is no news....YET.... Our class president has prepared a statement which will be proofed by the interim dean.... We will find out on Monday.... SO y'all are gonna have to sit tight and wait.... Otherwise, it does apply to all current medical students which is news in itself because we thought it was simply going to be new students only....

Anyway, I'll keep you posted...

Awh shcuks!!!! I hate waiting, hence the whole srugery thing. But what can you do? Hey JP I want to get a tour of the campus for my dad when we head out there in a couple of weeks, can I just talk to Genya to get premission to come on to campus? Oh yeah whats the weather like in Iowa now?

Hey everybody!

Well, you guys decided to be super active when I don't come on for a few hours!

That's great news, JP! I hope we'll be able to make similar posts in the threads of future DMU classes 😉

I need golfing lessons too! Never held a club in my life 😛

Prad, your business hours are going to be from 11pm to 4am?? What kind of "plumbing problems" are you focusing on?? 😱 The ones that pop up in the middle of the night? (pun intended 😀)

Anyway, hope you all have a great weekend! It's going to be sun-shiny around here!!

You like the buisness hours? Well the way I want it to work is that Rick will "relieve things that pop up in the night" and I'll collect the fees. 😛 😀 😛

Oh my...something is seriously wrong...

I'm starting to develop a liking to that song by...oh gosh, should I tell you guys? Don't make any judgements yet, ok??

Well, I've heard that song by Justin Timberlake 🙂o 😳 😳) a few times, and it's starting to sound catchy! 😱 The scary thing is, I've been to an 'NSYNC concert before (courtesy of my brother's gf) and I have their freaking CD (courtesy of a friend who wasn't thinking). Am I a teeny-bopper at heart??? Ya learn something new everyday....

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, oh no, oh god, what are we going to do?

Ladies and gentlemen of the DMU Class of 2007, I have have the sad duty of informing you that our beloved classmate Jane a.k.a. Luckystar has crossed over to the dark side.:scared:🙁

Aww, does that mean you guys won't take me along for golf?? I promise that I'll be good
angel.gif

Like you don't have any skeletons in your closet, Prad!

Some skeletons, but nothing admissible in court.😀

Hey why doesnt your little do hicky light up when your on?

My "little do hicky light"??? Dude, what are you trying to say? That my do hicky light is little?? 😉

I turned it off so I can stay in denial that I'm on here for such long periods sometimes. Because once I see myself "on", I become conscious of that fact that I'm "on", and then I'll feel guilty for being "on" for so long. Make sense?

Yo comperndo. (I trying to work on my spanglish). How do I turn my do hicky off?

I know what you mean about being on here, I feel like such a looser. This site is like CRACK!!! Once you start you never get off.

Go to User CP, and then there should be an option for you to make yourself invisible or something like that. Add an avatar while you're at it! I need to look for a new one once I move. No boats on water in Iowa!

Do I add the avtar the same way?

I got two of my friends hooked! I totally feel like a crack fiend. Getting my friends addicted too. The more the merrier!

Yeah, there should be a place in User CP to do that. In profile, or something. The avatar selection isn't very good, so I got mine from the AIM buddy icon site.

you would'nt happen to have the AIM site address would you?

Do I just find the one I like and cut and paste?

If you have AOL, just type in "buddy icons" and it'll take you there. I saved my avatar onto my computer, and then when you go to add your avatar, it should ask you to type in the link, and then you just put in where in your computer it is.

Ok cool, I'll do that.

actually...

the AIM buddy icon list sort of sucks too...

type in "buddy icons" in the search bar, not the main bar, and it'll give you tons of websites. Then you'll look cooler! 😀

See what you did? Now I'm looking at avatars too...🙄

At least it keeps me away from SDN for a few minutes!

Ok, I give up I found one that I liked but I dont know how to get it SDN, Jane can you help me with this once were in Iowa?

 sure can!

Did you right-click the icon, and then save it onto your computer?

I just want to thank the regulars in this thread for being so supportive. For those of you who remember, I was the one choosing between DMU and Ponce. I finally made a decision to go to Ponce School of Medicine. It took a lot of soul searching to make this decision, and I am happy with it. I hope my spot goes to an SDNer.

Again, thanks for all your help and input. I know you guys will be wonderful doctors. One day we'll probably working in the same hospital. Who knows?

Popoy,

Tristan

Jane,
You can get a tour when you're around here during the weekday.... or even a weekend if someone is available. Just tell Genya or Becky Grissom.

Weather right now is WET!!! Although a few days ago it was hot.... so very unpredictable otherwise, it's not really cold.

Congratulations on your decision.... I'm sure you'll be happy there and that they're very lucky to have you as a student.

Good luck to all you endeavors and maybe we'll cross paths again someday.

JP

Tristan,

I'll second what JP said! Good luck at Ponce!!

JP,

Actually, Prad asked about the tours, but thanks for the info! It's hard to keep track of who said what in this LOOOONG thread of ours 😀 I'll probably contact Becky a couple of weeks before I come to try and arrange something on the Saturday that I'll be there.

Anyway, I'm off to Philly for 2 days! I'll have my computer (thank goodness!!) so I'll be here too.

I've been keeping track of the weather in DSM! It really is unpredictable. I mean, Bay Area weather is sort of weird, but nothing like 80 degrees on one day, then rain the next!

That's Iowa for ya'.... Weather forecast is pretty good but because of the unpredictable weather... it's funny when they predict sunny and it's wet 😀

I think I'll take the day off... 🙂 That ACLS Stuff this weekend was a lot more tiring than I expected.... Fun stuff, wish I could have done it earlier.... It definitely helps with Cardio.... so if y'all have money to spare you may want to get certified so that you don't have to do it here and worry about it before Boards like what we're doing.... otherwise, you can pretty much wait and the school pays for it....

Ohhh, ACLS is Advance Cardiac Life Support.... Once certified you can run a "Code." Pretty much the stuff you see in ER but the real way 😀 The new stuff is secondary ABCDs... where you intubated, defibrilate, transcutaneously pace, administer drugs for whatever kind of rhythm....

IT was fun but boy was it tiring....

Alright, gotta go study for OMM now... which is on Monday.

Just to give you an idea of how a sample second year schedule is: Starting last Monday we had SPAL, Wednesday Neonatal/Pediatric Exam (only one exam), Friday and Sat ACLS, this coming Monday OMM, and coming Tuesday BLS recertification.... 🙂 Busy, busy, busy.... Don't let any other second year tell you otherwise.... but we wouldn't want it any other way.

Later, 😎

Ohhh another thing....

ENJOY PHILLY!!! I'm not exactly sure, but I think the storm is heading that way so you may want to check weather...

Safe trip

Ooh, JP! Tell me more about your SPAL experience! How many "patients" did you see to start off with? That sounds totally fun!

Tristan,
I'll second what Jane said.

JP I guess I'll just pack for all occasions...

Jane have a safe flight and tell us about phily.

SPAL is basically one patient acting out one clinical scenario.

In your first year, your first SPAL is taking a full history. The second is a complete history and physical.

In your second year, you will be presented with a chief complaint based on what system you're learning in class. The last SPAL is capstone which means you don't know what system is involved and you will do a complete history and physical come out with a differential and plan... then you present it to your attending.... oral presentation.

Basically, throughout your second year you will be doing a complete history and physical. Come up with a differential and plan... then you take a computer test.

Ohh yeah, you have to do all your H&P (History and Physical) in under 25 minutes. 😀

Your write up is 30 mins after the computer exam.

Pretty involving but pretty straight forward.... it's really important to do as our future boards will have a clinical skills assessment included.... DMU was asked to be one of the leaders for showing how things are suppose to be done... 🙂

Anyway.... Have a wonderful Easter everyone.... It's gloomy and chances of showers.... yuck... 😉

Later, 😎

JP SPALS sound fun, thanks for the info about how to get a tour arranged.

It's even much better when you see your first patient.... as I did in La Clinica and your training kicks in and all I can say is simply..... WOW.... I definitely went to a great medical school.... Till this day, I remember that time and will cherish it forever....

44 days before BOARDS!!!! Time to kick some serious asssesssttsss and get crankin' for the boards.... 🙂

It's sunny again and no chance of freakin' rain for the entirety of next week.... Yeepeeskeepee.... I can't believe I'm saying this but it actually feels like Cali right now...

Later 😎
