Well, I 've interviwed at four school and narrowed it down to DMU and UNE (Imagine that). I have this wierd feeling like i should attend DMU, but there is this other side that really likes UNE. I am actually quite tired of the whole thing.
I really didn't like the scenery at DMU (sounds so stupid). I live in TN and it is really great here, so i was kinda' hoping for a place like home. I stayed with a student there in Des Moines and i didn't like the apartments at all (right across the street from school). If i could find a nice, comfortable apartment on the west side i would probably be totally cool at DMU. Except for the first year lecture hall, that sucked real bad.
I felt more comfortable at UNE, but there is no place to live!

What about you, How did you finally decide on DMU? Did you just feel comfortable there or did you decide the education was better.

Where in TN are you from? Small town or larger city?

I had a few experiences in Maine that made me feel a little uncomfortable. Granted, it could have just been me being paranoid, but nonetheless, I didn't feel like it was the place for me. I also thought that there weren't as many hospitals in the immediate area as I would like. For example, at DMU, there are at least three large medical centers around (Mercy, IMMC, Memorial) and probably more that I don't know about yet. I think that the education at both schools is comparable, but during my interview, UNE seemed to have a more rural focus, which is nice if that's what you want. But for my learning experience, I want a more urban environment.

I guess why I didn't find a lot of bad things about DMU is because the school I went to had some pretty bad lecture halls, and even worse apartments! I mean, there were also really great lecture halls and cushy apartments too, but having the not-so-pretty things sort of desensitized me to all of that.

If there's anything specific you want me to talk about, just ask 🙂

I am from Murfreesboro. A city about 30 miles south of Nashville, therefore i am used to the city with a hint of country life (yee-haw)
If you have never been to Nashville, i would recommend you see it sometime. It is really great here!

I guess i am pretty sensitive to luxerious accomodations.
well, I won't bother you any longer. Thanks for the feedback. I found my budget worksheet!

James😎

JP, they really do just give out awards to everybody there now, don't they?! Just kidding, you deserve it. The young padawan has now become the master.
Keep kickin' it there on the east side (representin') ---craniotomy

Hey guys I'm back. My bro got a call from one of his friends ( a girl who he has the most sophmorish crush) in crisis and he's off consouling her, and I'm back here. Not that it's bad being here, but I'd rather be in a bar toasting Old St. Pat!

James😎

I've always thought Nashville was a pretty cool place! I'll add it to my list of places to visit 😀

Another thing that I had to consider was the costs of attending either school, and it's definitely cheaper for me to go to DMU. Of course, in the long run, with all that interest, it probably wouldn't make a significant difference. But still, it could mean I can buy more jeans! 😛

Anyway, it's no bother...that's what SDN is here for!

 Yeah that was really fast! How old is your brother? You just missed James...I'm doing my darnedest to try to get him to pick DMU! (Just kiddin, James...😀 )

He's 21, and he's my roomate. I'm gonna miss him though.

Hey james if this helps, my cousin graduated from DMU, and she's only had good things to say.

Holy **** JP, I think I met you. I was going over the class of 2005 thread and I saw that you mentiond you were philipino. I think you showed up to my interview groups lunch. In fact you had on green scrubs and glasses. Anyway good luck on your test.

Prad? I don't think we'll get Lee to say yes to those T's?. Dr. Lee Burnett seems to be very busy at the moment? oh well.... Just for you I'll keep tryin'.... Oh BTW, you're right... that was me. 🙂 People generally don't miss a filipino in Des Moines, Iowa 😀 I wonder why I was wearing a scrub that day.... It may have been for surgery lab or physical diagnosis.... huh???.... Small world, ehhh???

Funny, ha ha 😉 It still hasn't sunk in that I'm student DO of the Year? It's suppose to be big but I'm not sure I'm seeing the "big" picture? Oh well? I'm sure I'll find out more later? ME master.... I don't know about that... but I'm gettin' there 😉

JMJ: Turn in the app for NHSC.... you can always turn in down if and when you receive an acceptance. There's a final letter they send you to finalize your signature and acceptance. All you have to do is NOT sign it, IF you don't want it.

Yeeeehhaaaaawww...... SPRING BREAK, baaaabyyyyy!!!!

Have fun JP and everybody else who's on break. I'm so jelouse(sp?). I'm gonna be pouring asphalt on my spring break.

It's spring break at DMU already? That's early! But all that matters is that you have one! I wish I had a spring break 🙁

What are you going to do during your break, JP? And when are you moving to Ohio?

JP what hospitals in Ohio are you rotating at?

Prad: I've decided to go to Des Moines from May 16-18. I'm going to book the flights now. I'm not going to decide on apts until I look at them, because you know how some pictures lie! Sex roles and stereotypes, huh? Is it a cool class?

ArmyDoc: Congratulations on your acceptance to DMU! Tell us about yourself! Oh, I interviewed the week after you did.

Thanks! Well, I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm 23, i go to the Univ. of Florida and am majoring in Nutritional Sciences. I like anything to do with water usually(I surf, scuba dive, and love to play on my jet ski on my parent's lake). I actually paddled out today because I'm on spring break right now but it really blew. I wanted to go yesterday because it was pretty decent for florida surf but I spent all day at NAS Jax getting a physical for the Uniformed Services University. Do any surfing there luckystar? I noticed you have that little comment about being landlocked. I guess it won't be too much of a shock to my system because I haven't had much time to surf since I've been in college.

docgeorge,
I just read your post about being in the Army. That was really awesome that you got on IRR just in time. I totally understand your worries about not getting to start med school because of activation. I'm a medic in the reserves right now but I've been put in a non-deployable status. I signed my contract for the Army HPSP and was sworn in on Dec. 13th. My unit was put on alert on Dec. 16th!! I just barely snuck past being under the stop loss policy. Half of my unit has already been deployed. They tried to screw with me because of the stop loss policy but I got the regs out and showed them where I didn't fall under stop loss. They tried to tell me I had been under stop loss since november but the regs said a soldier only falls under stop loss once that soldier's unit has been alerted or activated. They are still trying to screw with me at headquarters. I'm trying to get an OBC slot for this summer but I can't until I'm released from my unit. My unit released me but higher up says they want to wait till closer to my school date. According to the regs they only have to release me 3 days prior to med school. I'll be so pissed if I don't get to go to OBC this summer. Anyways, enough with my bitching about the Army. Have you thought of doing the HPSP to get out of your current contract all together? Is anyone else in this thread doing an HPSP scholarship?

I've been reading some of you all's past posts. I think we are going to have an awesome time in med school. Everyone in here seems pretty cool. I can't remember who it was but someone mentioned they turned down UHS for DMU. Was it because of the crappy neighborhood? I loved the school but I couldn't see myself ever getting use to the location. Well, I guess I should get some sleep. It's almost 4:30 in the morning but I'm not tired. I've gotten use to staying up late this past week and sleeping in late, too. Next week is going to suck! Back to getting up early. Oh well, Later!

Thank goodness it's Saturday tomorrow! I get to sleep in! Finally...😴

Hey guys 'n gals, what were you thinking when you first applied to DMU? I remember thinking something like, "hmm...this school sounds interesting, and I'd like to see what Iowa's all about. And it gets brownie points for not requiring a DO LOR".
---------------------------------------------------
ArmyDoc,

I've never even tried to surf! And scuba diving is something I'd like to learn. The beaches in San Francisco are way too cold to go in the water, at least for me. But I can see the ocean everyday, so I guess I'll miss it after I move to Iowa. It's one of those things that I take for granted, being near the water and all.

Did you get a physical because you got into the Uniformed Services University?

Jane

Yeah, I'm still online even though I said I was going to sleep. I got interested in a thread someone posted about favorite chief complaints. I have a few stories but they aren't really funny so I decided not to submit anything.

Jane,
I haven't been accepted to USUHS(uniformed services univ....) yet. To be considered further after the interview you have to pass the physical saying that you can be a military officer. It was actually a much easier physical than the one I did for the HPSP. The one for the HPSP was done at MEPS(military entrance processing station), which is where everyone goes when they first enter the military as an enlisted person. So basically, at MEPS they look for anything to disqualify you. I'm pretty sure I'll be going to DMU because I just interviewed at the beginning of last month because AMCAS screwed up my application. Don't get me started on AMCAS!! LOL. I really want to file a law suit against them. Anyways, since I just interviewed last month I wont be considered until next month, which means I basically interviewed for a wait list position. The thing is that the Army waitlist is fairly small and most people who are on the Army waitlist get in because so many people drop towards the end because they'd rather go to a civilian school with no military contract. The thing is that I've grown very impatient and I just want all this overwith. I want to know where I'm moving in August and I want to be able to start looking for apartments. So basically by the end of may if they don't call me and offer me a spot I'm just going to drop the school. Truthfully, I really liked Des Moines better than the Washington D.C. area. I also feel like Osteopathic medicine is my true calling but I don't know if I could turn down USUHS for DMU because USUHS is like the Harvard of military medicine. Their freakin cadaver room puts any cadaver room I've ever seen to shame!! It was simply HUGE!! Anyways, I'm really going to try to get some sleep this time. Later!

Oh yeah one more thing. I keep forgetting to tell everyone my name. Anyways, it's Leighton. Later!

Leighton, as the mafia would say, Welcome to the family 😉

luckystay, during sprink break I'm going up in Ottawa Canada to attend the AAO Convocation. I'm the National Rep for UAAO and the Regional Coordinator... So I'm paid to go there 🙂 Otherwise, I'm gonna enjoy the company of the best of the best in OMM. As for Ohio, I may swing by on Monday to check out apartments....

Docgeorge, There are four hospitals we are able to rotate at in Columbus, Ohio.... Columbus is where I was placed for rotations. The my main/home hospital is Doctor's Hospital.

JP,
I was looking at some of the hospitals online that DMU lists for rotations. I noticed one I might be interested in in Michigan. It was Bay Medical Center. Do you know anything about that hospital? How do you decide what hospitals are really good ones that you would want to rotate through? I was also curious how DMU ranks among the other DO schools. I know DMU is well known for OMM, but how well know is it for its medicine. I mean how are the board scores compared to other DO schools? Anyways, thanks for any info you can swing my way. Later!

During the beginning of the year, there's something called "HOSPITAL DAY" here at DMU.... I would highly, highly encourage you all to go and meet all the hospitals and residency programs affiliated with DMU.

During Hospital Day, you can see whether or not the sites would best suite you for rotations. I don't know much about Bay Medical Center as I had my heart set on Ohio hospitals... thus I concentrated on the Ohio sites and little of the other sites.

I would also suggest, during your breaks, to visit some of the hospitals affiliated with DMU to see whether or not you may want to rotate there..... Michigan is a drive away 😉 a far one but still a drive away....

As for ranking of DMU.... There's no such ranking that exist. COMLEX I (Step I board) we had a 97% passing rate. This is pretty darn high compared to many osteopathic medical schools, if I do say so myself.... Someone told me COMLEX II goes down because not many people remember their OMM once in rotations.... I'm not sure about the numbers for passing COMLEX II (between 88%-90% passing).

We are well known for producing many a great doctors.... as to extent of it.... it's merely heresay and anecdotal....

I hope that helps a bit, if you'd like me to clarify I can tell you stories up the waaaaazzzoooo about the what I've heard why DMU is the place to go....

Later gators, 😎

JP tell me good things aout my er..."our" school! I love stories!

Well guys I'm back in my good ol home town. It's called Los Banos. I'll give those who are uninitated a little georgraphy lesson. You hop on I-5 south bound in Sacramento and drive for about 2 hours. After about 2 hours of driving you will enounter the unyielding stench of fresh cow manure. Once you smell the manuer, you take the next off ramp and wala your in my home town.😀 😀 😀

JP! How's it goin? It's so cool that you're paid to go to the AAO Convocation. So, you're going to spend the next two years in Ohio? I know you said that you have the option of staying with some people of the school if you ever need to go back to Des Moines, but how do other people do it? Like, for graduation and all that other stuff. Do they have to stay at a hotel, or find short-term housing?

Leighton:
Yeah, I've heard some horror stories about both AMCAS and AACOMAS. That's too bad about what happened with your apps. I hope everything works out for the best!

Hey, I've never heard of Los Banos! It sounds like a farm town in the central valley. What are you doing there? Just visiting for the weekend? Haha, UCD is always rumored to smell like cow manure, but I didn't catch any of it when I visited! A good thing, probably...

Yeah Jane it is a farm town in the central vally. I'm here to drag my parents into the 21st centuary. I bought them a computer and High Speed internet access and I'm teaching them how to use it.

ArmyDoc, I did consider the HPSP for about 1.3milliseconds, but them I rembered what happened the last time I signed on the dotted line like the man told me to. He (the recruiter) promised me trips to exotic places (me imagining bare chested maidens in grass skirts). He unfortunately did not tell me that there is a difference between exotic and erotic.😡

The other thing is that while I've always had a low tollerence for BS, but over the past 6 years or so, they beat evan that out of me. I thought I understood Bull **** (espicially comming from Los Banos). After experienceing Army BS I now truly understand what BS is.

Did you also know that not every body likes the US Army? Their anger sometimes manifests it self by them shooting at you and getting shot hurts (or so I've heard). I'm allergic to pain, I break out in screams!!!!

Prad, you are especially funny today!

So where were some of those exotic places that you got to visit?

Jane I have to be funny to make up for the absolute lack of good looks that so many like Brad Pitt and Vin Diesel are endowed with. I've instead had to develop my brain, and a quick whitt.😉

Hmm...let me think a min....Guatemala, equador, S. Korea, Hawaii (but not the fun place with bikini clad women, but high up in the mountians with the 25th Infantry), Ft. Mcoy, Wissconsin (where they have mosquitoes as big as humming birds), the back woods of Georgia and South Carolina.

I also alomst got sent to Kosovo, but luckily they let me out at the last moment.

So what are you up to Jane?

Wow, you've been around! I hope Iowa doesn't have the Wisconsin-sized mosquitoes! But we're supposed to be worried about the whole West Nile virus episode to be continued this summer right? I mean, there's talk that it'll spread to the west coast, but the midwest had a lot of cases last year, didn't it? I hate mosquitoes...🙄

I'm gonna go get some dinner now. I've been sleeping a lot today! And now I've got that drowsy feel from sleeping too much. Ick...

I didn't see that part! Ok, wait...

Brad Pitt 😍 is HOT

Vin Diesel...🙁 Not hot...

My opinion....😀

But wit makes up for looks any day! 😉

Oh...Prad so sad....Jane leaveing🙁

Don't be sad, Prad, be glad!

What are you up to? Browsing?

I'm looking for furniture and other household stuff online. I really need my own apartment again!

Yea I'm jsut browsing. I'm also slowly moveing my stuff from my apt to my parents place (not that I have that much stuff). Today I moved my mother of desk and gave it to my parents. That thing must weigh about 200lbs. I'm not kidding, it took 3 people to take it down the stairs. Are you buying stuff here and takeing it to DMU?

JP I was reading some old threads (What are DO school ranking or something like that) HankHill and HomerS and a couple of other people had some really bad things to say. Tell me it aint so. If it was tell me they fixed it.

I'm not going to move that much to DMU. Just all my clothes, my bed, some books, A/V stuff, and kitchen things. I'm going to buy some stuff after I get there, like a table and bookshelves, and probably online so it will all be shipped.

What's bothering you about DMU? I've heard good and bad things about the school, but it doesn't seem like I wouldn't be able to handle the bad things. It sounds like a school where you really have to be involved and responsible/independent about getting what you want.

The only thing that I'm really botherd by the 3rd and 4th year rotations. All the 1st and 2nd year stuff dont bother me. I just cant seem to find any thing about how 3rd and 4th years are supposed to work and that gets my immagination running wild.

Above are the assorted quotes that I picked out from reading Prad stuff.... Here's my answers 😀

One story is about a Thoracic DO surgeon from the east coast that said the reason he wanted his son to come to DMU was that he's had students from DMU rotate and do their residency their and they were much, much better than Harvard Med students.... This is after I gave him and his son a tour. BTW, did you guys know that we had a teleconference in our first year against Harvard medical students??? We had a case study and guess what happened??? DMU whooped Harvard's butt.... we had the write diagnosis and write etiology of the disease while Harvard messed up big time!!! Better yet, they were actually 3rd and 4th years while we were only first years.... That's the kind of stories I got.... more later.... 😉

Prad, don't be sad.... UHS is only a couple of hours away.... YOU CAN DO IT!!!

3rd and 4th year rotations are a bit of a pain, but be kind to the Clinical Affairs ladies.... especially Penne and she'll take care of you. HankHill, et al did not have good experience back in the old days now it's much better.... The best advice I will impart regarding rotations is BE KIND and RESPECTFUL of the clinical affairs department and you will be in good hands. Remember that they try their best to help all students but their a lot of us to help.

The other advice, try to go to Ohio they really take great care of us.... 😀

3rd and 4th year will work out trust me....Just have faith and it will. My mind was also running all these possible scenarios when I read all those old thread and they're making it out to be bigger than what it is.... I really believe the reason those people don't have a good experience w/clinical affairs is that they don't have anything else to say about DMU so they target the clinical affairs department....

Though, don't get me wrong, I have heard of students having a horrible time with clinical affairs.... Just make sure you copy everything you send clinical affairs, follow up on every communication or paper you send, and from time to time simply ask them how they are.... The people in clinical affairs are people too so when they hear criticism all the time, they get a bit nasty.... wouldn't you?

Otherwise, when it's all said and done you will be taken care of....

😱 I wouldn't have dared to compare DMU with Harvard...but hey, if that's true, it's cool!

I think you've said before that the setup for rotations has been getting better. People have said that the rotations in Ohio and Michigan are the best choice. So I guess it'll be Ohio or Michigan, Prad!

To quote someone you know JP

PRAD + LOS BANOS = VERY VERY BORED

Thanks for the post JP. I'm glad to hear that Hank is doing better now. I gess my problem was that I dont know how to develop a plan of attack for 3rd and 4th year so it made me very nervouse. I'm the kind of person that has to have a plan. The plan can change, thats ok but with out one I go crazy, but I'll take your words of wisdom to heart. What are you doing up this late?

Gotta go guys got to figure out Finacial Aid with my dad.

🙂 Have lots of fun with the money planning!

Being a National Rep for UAAO give you some mula to go to convo.... pretty darn nice.... But I never did it for the mula, of course. I love what I do.

Ohio is only for the 3rd year. 4th year is optional and if there is place for you. Otherwise, I'm out of Ohio and can do any kind of rotation I want, anywhere in the US.... including Cali.

Comin' back to Des Moines, there are places that will allow you to rent per month.... I can't remember which apartment complex that was. For graduation, pretty much everyone stays in hotels especially the Savory because the graduation is held at the civic center... where you're white coat ceremony is also held.

UCD... That's my alma mater.... There are certain months and times of the day it smells of cow. It's really only in the cow ranch part.... not the entire campus.... unless the wind blows the right way 😀 😉

No big mosquitoes in Iowa.... I was shock for not seeing any ants at all, either.... BTW, the west nile virus stuff is not at all a threat. Take it from someone who's doin' his Master's in Public Health in Iowa.... There was only 3 cases.... My prof even said you have a better chance of gettin' hit by a lightning than gettin' the west nile. The media hypes it up too much some times.... So don't worry about west nile.... 😎

Glad I've eased your mind....

Ahhhh, you notice I'm up late..... That's what happens when you don't have anything due.... I'm gettin' withdrawals from not studying 😀

Thanks JP! You are always sooo helpful! I was going to ask about ants too! I had a big problem with them at my old apartment. Too cold for them in Iowa, huh?

Yeah, I heard about all the freedom you have for 4th year. It'd be really nice to go to where you really want to go. Are you seriously considering coming back to CA then?

Nighty night.... Financial aid.... I remember those dayzzzz. Good luck, y'all don't get your check until your second/third day in orientations.... they take a portion of it for tuition automatically....

I'm gonna get some shut eye as well....

Later, 😎

I think I'll probably stick around in the midwest or east coast.... I really like the people in the midwest.... So for now, I'll move towards east and find which section of the nation I'll feel comfy....

I hope I'll like the midwest too. Sounds like a nice place to settle down in.

Good night JP!

JP who should I choose as my stafford loan leander? Additionaly do you know of a red brick apt complex with a courtyard close to the Imperial?

Hey Prad,

I know you asked JP the Stafford loan question, but I looked at my application, and it's already filled out to say "First Midwest Bank", which is associated with Wells Fargo.

For private loans to supplement the rest of your budget, you can use the MedCAP app for Wells Fargo that DMU gave us, or you can apply through another lender, like T.H.E. (the website is www.northstar.org).

Ok, sorry for butting in!

Docgeorge,
I too have put up with quite a bit of B.S. from the Army and sometimes it really pisses me off. Take for instance the whole situation with the HPSP. You would think that since I'm doing something good for the Army that headquarters would have no problem releasing me. Instead they want to be dicks about it which really pisses me off because I can't get an OBC seat. So I totally understand where you are coming from, but overall I feel that my duty to my country overrides any B.S. I may have to put up with. Also, I feel that once I become a senior officer I really won't have to put up with as much B.S. I know that I may end up in a tent city moving around the desert and possibly getting shot at but if God wants me to die I will die whether I'm fighting or driving in my car to work. I have had alot of friends though that got tired of the Army B.S. and got out because of it. It can be quite irritating sometimes, but you know there is going to be B.S. no matter where you are. Anyways, it doesn't matter where we practice medicine (military or civilian), we are all working towards the same goal: saving lives and improving the quality of those lives. Later!
