Hey JP,
I have some other questions for you. First, do you know if HPSP recipients can set up some kind of 3rd and 4th year rotations at military hospitals? They have hospitals that 3rd and 4th year students from USUHS can rotate through. Do you think there is any possibility of clinical affairs setting something like that up? I mean if this is the chance to look for possible residency spots and I will be doing military residencies, wouldn't this make sense? Somehow I'm thinking they wouldn't do this though. Second, I requested a list of residency placements from last year's class and I noticed on the allopathic residency list(the lady would only send me allopathic and military matches) that there were alot of spots that say NO MATCH. Is this bad, or did these people end up just getting at osteopathic match instead? The military matches were actually really good! Also, I noticed some people got really awesome residencies like mayo and NYU. Do you think these people had to be at the top of the class to get these residencies? Sorry about having so many questions posted at once. Thanks for the info. Later!
Keep the questions coming.... I'll do my best to answer them but I don't have all the answers, of course
😉
I know of someone going to the Ohio CORE that told me that he can have "military time" in Ohio or can set up his own rotation with the military.
I applied to USUHS during my first year and I, too, almost became and HPSP scholar via the Navy.... when i took the tour throught the San Diego Hospital and the USS Mercy, we had asked the docs there about doing a rotation through and most of them said that USUHS students have first choice before other medical students.... So setting up a rotation with them may be hard to do.
You also have to understand that setting up a rotation is more flexible in your fourth year. The reason is that we're somewhat "lock" in certain regions of the country for our third year.... it's all the requirements we must fulfill, etc. that locks us to these regions.... There's also the small requirement of having Clinical affairs setting up your rotations so they have to contact USUHS or a contact individual to make sure you can do a rotation there.... this can get messy as if clinical affairs don't get a good communication going with the contact site, then you can pretty much say bye bye to that site.... My experience with the military is that if you're not military then communication w/ them is harder than usual.... I'm sure you can set up or even required to do military rotation time so in the end I'm sure it'll all work out. I always hear good things from HPSPers regarding rotation. Once you get here, there's a club called AMOPS that you can join and there are others going through the experience you'll get going through. They will be a great resource....
As for NO MATCH listed, this can be multiple reasons.... it can be privacy, no contact response, or simply the students didn't want to report them....
NYU and Mayo.... pretty much, in order to get a good residency you must have good letter of recommendation, grades, and most especially BOARD score.... This is exactly like applying for medical school all over again, unfortunately/fortunately. You don't have to be on the top of your class, though. They did a current research on what residency programs look for in candidates and the number one reason is "workmanship" and "ability to work and communicate with others." Sounds corney, but most people will tell you to do several rotation at the site you want to do your residency in. The reason for that is that you can get a great letter of rec, they will know you already and thus will probably get picked over some joe-smo that just applied in that site without having done a rotation there.... does that make sense?
If any of this is a bit vague, just ask away and I'll do my best to clarify them.
Later,
😎
