I think we're all automatically w/Wells Fargo unless you opt for somethin' else.... you're gonna have to do some foot work along with Financial aid office.... so Jane is right, it's already filled out for us. If you'd like to do something else, then I would suggest calling the financial aid office.

The red brick apt complex w/a courtyard close to Imperial is the apartment complex which I live in.... it's called WINDSOR TERRACE. I've had a great experience here. It's wooden floors (for the most part) and as soon as you walk out the door you're right at the courtyard.... I would suggest comin' here. The owners are a couple of ex-Army people and were from Sacramento at some point in their life.... so you'll hit it off w/them easily.

JP,
I have another question for you. I was thinking about doing an IM subspecialty in cardiovascular disease. Should I do some kind of cardiac research during my time at DMU to help me get a placement in that subspecialty? The mentality of all my premed friends is that to get into a specialty you have to do some kind of research pertaining to that specialty in medical school. I was also curious about why the ohio sites are so good. If you don't mind could you tell me a little about the hospitals in ohio. I'm really starting to gain interest in them since you've spoke so highly of them. Oh and one more thing. Would you say that I should stay away from the smaller hospitals? Do you think I would see enough in a small hospital? Anyways, thanks for the info. Later!

Jane, you dont have to apologise for butting in, feel free to do it any time.

Armydoc, I'm sorry they are giving you trouble about OBC, I would'nt worry too much aobut not doing the OBC this summer, you can always do it next. I noticed you were from florida, I'm jellouse(sp???) I'd spend the whole summer on the beach in So. Florida if I could.

JP tell me that place has AC. My cousin lived in that place and she said she loved it there, she just could'nt rember the name of the place. Hopefully, the managers will like me and let me have a place there. How is the convention going?

Hey JP,
I have some other questions for you. First, do you know if HPSP recipients can set up some kind of 3rd and 4th year rotations at military hospitals? They have hospitals that 3rd and 4th year students from USUHS can rotate through. Do you think there is any possibility of clinical affairs setting something like that up? I mean if this is the chance to look for possible residency spots and I will be doing military residencies, wouldn't this make sense? Somehow I'm thinking they wouldn't do this though. Second, I requested a list of residency placements from last year's class and I noticed on the allopathic residency list(the lady would only send me allopathic and military matches) that there were alot of spots that say NO MATCH. Is this bad, or did these people end up just getting at osteopathic match instead? The military matches were actually really good! Also, I noticed some people got really awesome residencies like mayo and NYU. Do you think these people had to be at the top of the class to get these residencies? Sorry about having so many questions posted at once. Thanks for the info. Later!

Who did you contact to get the match lists?

Thanks docgeorge. Yeah I figured I would go next summer if I don't go this summer but it really would be nice getting it out of the way and having some extra cash in my pocket when I start med school. Don't be too jealous. I'm ready to get out of Florida. I've lived here my whole life and I'm ready for some new experiences (ie seasons). Why do you think I turned down my interview at NSUCOM, lol. The secretary turned out to be a very mean person, so I was glad I turned them down. Do you know she actually hung up on me when I told her I wasn't going to come to my interview!! If I don't go to OBC this summer I will probably spend every day surfing!!! Come on down and I'll take you surfing!! Anyways, I got to run. Later!!

I just called the office and I think they connected me with records. I can't remember if that is correct though cause I did it back in November. She charged me like 10 bucks though for a faxing fee and this was after I argued with her for like 10-15 minutes. She didn't want to send them because they had the students names on them. I was like "well why dont you just tape some paper over that side of the sheet and fax it" and she was like, "ummmm.....ummmm I guess that would work(stupid tone implied)." I was quite pissed considering most schools will just give you the info easily. UHS gave me their residency placement when I went to the interview!! Anyways, if you want it I can scan it tomorrow in lab and send it to you. All I have is the allopathic and military match. Let me know. Later!

Hey there leighton,

I'll do my best to answer these questions.... The word on subspecialty and research is that it is a better idea to do research as this will definitely make you shine compared to all the other applicants (Sounds like applying to med school all over again, doesn't it?) I would suggest doing research during your residency to be more important than doing research in medical school for the purpose of getting a subspecialty.... Research in medical school is good for you to get into the residency you want, then when you're in that residency I would do a research in the specialty field you want so that when you apply to specialty programs then you have the right connections to write you a letter of recommendations, etc.

The Ohio sites are great because Ohio houses the nation's CORE (Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education). The CORE is not for OSUCOM only, but for all the osteopathic schools in the United States.... So it's wonderful to go to the hospitals and see other medical students from other medical schools. Think of the CORE system as a common place to learn for all osteopathic medical students. I would visit the Ohio website as that can show you even more than what I can type here .... www.ohiocore.org/home.asp
Click on the "Affliated Hospitals" so that you can see the hospitals available to us.... each hospital only allows "x" amount of DMU students. For example, in Doctor's Hospital in Columbus, that's where I'm going, there's only 6 of us going.

Small hospitals.... There are good and bad things about it. Bad in that it is small and you'll probably won't get to the patient load you'll typically see in a larger hospital, but GREAT because you may get first hand experience assisting in surgery, performing other procedures, etc.

Keep the questions coming.... I'll do my best to answer them but I don't have all the answers, of course 😉

I know of someone going to the Ohio CORE that told me that he can have "military time" in Ohio or can set up his own rotation with the military.

I applied to USUHS during my first year and I, too, almost became and HPSP scholar via the Navy.... when i took the tour throught the San Diego Hospital and the USS Mercy, we had asked the docs there about doing a rotation through and most of them said that USUHS students have first choice before other medical students.... So setting up a rotation with them may be hard to do.

You also have to understand that setting up a rotation is more flexible in your fourth year. The reason is that we're somewhat "lock" in certain regions of the country for our third year.... it's all the requirements we must fulfill, etc. that locks us to these regions.... There's also the small requirement of having Clinical affairs setting up your rotations so they have to contact USUHS or a contact individual to make sure you can do a rotation there.... this can get messy as if clinical affairs don't get a good communication going with the contact site, then you can pretty much say bye bye to that site.... My experience with the military is that if you're not military then communication w/ them is harder than usual.... I'm sure you can set up or even required to do military rotation time so in the end I'm sure it'll all work out. I always hear good things from HPSPers regarding rotation. Once you get here, there's a club called AMOPS that you can join and there are others going through the experience you'll get going through. They will be a great resource....

As for NO MATCH listed, this can be multiple reasons.... it can be privacy, no contact response, or simply the students didn't want to report them....

NYU and Mayo.... pretty much, in order to get a good residency you must have good letter of recommendation, grades, and most especially BOARD score.... This is exactly like applying for medical school all over again, unfortunately/fortunately. You don't have to be on the top of your class, though. They did a current research on what residency programs look for in candidates and the number one reason is "workmanship" and "ability to work and communicate with others." Sounds corney, but most people will tell you to do several rotation at the site you want to do your residency in. The reason for that is that you can get a great letter of rec, they will know you already and thus will probably get picked over some joe-smo that just applied in that site without having done a rotation there.... does that make sense?

If any of this is a bit vague, just ask away and I'll do my best to clarify them.

Later, 😎

No AC 🙁 BUT!!!! you can get a window AC unit installed or buy it yourself then place it yourself. Don't worry about this aspect of it.... most students do this. Imperial has AC but it's really just a unit installed in the wall. 3000 Grand has centralize AC which is great....

Just make sure you tell Janine and Tim (the managers - wife and husband) that you know me 😉 or other students that stayed here when they were at DMU. One other thing that's great is that the managers live here in the complex so when something goes awry then they're immediately there to rescue... 😀

Also don't forget to mention your military background.... During the time I was apartment hunting, I mentioned I may become a Navy HPSP and they liked that... 😀 The reason they talk to their clients is that they want good people to be in the apartment complex instead of unreliable individuals....

Try and call them already before you become a part of the waiting list.... now is the best time to call. Good luck with that....

JP thanks for all the info and the notes. 28 pages of notes for 1 week of classes! Yikes.

ArmyDoc, I'm tired of Cali right now. Too bad we cant switch places.

Talk to you guys (and gals) later.

ATTENTION: For those of you who want the first weeks notes for Introduction to Osteopathic Medicine, just simply PM me or email me your email address.... and I will attach the file to the email as I did with Prad's

I took the liberty of sending Prad the notes already as he was able to tell us his email address.... I'm glad you see that it's 28pages worth of notes and that's just the first week.... There's more to come 😀 😉

I'm off to Canada tomorrow, so till next week...Later gators.... I just hope they don't close down the borders with this whole war thing.... 🙁 What a mess....

I forgot to mention that anyone else who wants a copy of the residency placements for DMU please email me at [email protected]

I will try to get them out tomorrow.

Later!

I'm tired of Cali too! Well, more like I'm tired of the city. I didn't notice before, but I think I'll like small town life. Not as many weirdos (I hope!) 😀

I hope you don't get stuck in Canada, JP!

Like I said before, too bad we (the tired of cali californians) cant switch places with Leighton. We could spend time on the beach surfing (or at least in my case attempting to surf) and Leighton can spend his time untill school starts exploring SF and have the privilage of dealing with all the resident wierdos.

Ah yes, almost forgot:

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!!!

Any excuse is a good excuse to drink green beer! 😀

I hope y'all got my email... leighton, I came across of a bit of a snag with your email.... I tried again a couple of times but if you don't get it just simply let me know again and I'll try again.

Jane, it's gettin' a bit scary with the president's address to the nation but we can't be driven by fear.... isn't that what the terrorist feed off of??? or so I've heard....

Before y'all know it, you'll miss the ocean water of California... 😉

HEY!! I don't want to deal with the resident weirdos either!! lol. Some surfing in California might be nice though. Later!

JP,
I received your last email but there wasn't anything attached. Mind sending it again?? Thanks!

Later,
Leighton

Just curious but didn't the thread lose some people?? I noticed that early on there was alot more people chimming in. Some people saying that they were going to be joining us next year. I'm curious to where everyone went. Anyways, just an observation. Later!

Just wanted to say.... I still have not decided and time is running out. I hate this! 🙄

JMJ,
Refresh my memory. Who are you deciding between? DMU and who else?

Later!

Leighton, Thanks for the Match list. JMJ good luck choosing. Jane did you go out drinking last night?

Prad,

Not really. I had dinner with a couple of my college friends and had like, 2 drinks(buy 1 get 1 free!). That's not "going out drinking", is it?

Yeah, where is everybody else? Rick is hardly on, and looking back, whatever happened to "Melvin"? Ah well, we can rule this thread 😎

Prad,
Just thought I'd say what's up since I saw you were online looking around the forum. What did you think of the residency placements? I was really impressed about that one guy who got an ortho surg residency at Mayo-SOM. I didn't think the military match was too shaby either. Well, got to get some sleep. Later!

My compute at home is acting funky! That really bites.

Lerighton, I liked what I saw. They had some good placements. I'd love to talk to the person that got the Ortho at Mayo maby he or she can give me some tips>🙂

JMJ good luck at UNECOM. Hopefully I'll see you around 3rd or 4th year some where.

Jane, I hope you had fun with your friends. I'm gonna check out Windsor Terrace or Place or what ever it's called when I get there. My cousin and JP only have good things to say about it. I'm still torn about 3000 grand, but rent overthere would eat up almost half my living budget. I dont know if I can afford that. The other thing is that I might be able to save over a grand a year living someplace else and a grand = a lot of beer. 😀

Talk to you all soon.

Prad

Well, in case you haven't figured it out from the above post, I will be attending UNECOM next year. You all sound like very pleasant people, however my comfort was found in Maine. I wish you all the absolute best. I will keep an eye on this thread and hope to come in contact with you all in the coming years. Work hard and live life to the fullest.

James

UNECOM 2007

Hello all!
No, I didn't drop off the face of the earth. I have been out of town for the past couple of days. We went to see my parents in Nashville (we all met half way) so that they could see the baby. What a cool city! Downtown was awesome and we went to a mall that was like 3 miles long (or at least that's what it seemed like). I was amazed at how many PAGES that I had to read just to get up to speed in here. You guys are talkers (which is not a bad thing)!
Hey Popoy (or anyone else who has them), could you email those notes that everyone is talking about...my email is [email protected]

thanks,
Rick

Hey Rick How are you doing?Howis Tegan? Anyway just wanted to hi. I hope that my computer stops acting up us soon. This really sucks.

prad,
i'm good...teagan is great. As soon as I can I'll post a new picture. Wait until you see how much hair she is getting. She is like a Chia Pet on Miracle-Gro. Everytime we give her a bath, new growth SPROUTS up. She's already gotten three hair trimmings.

Rick

Hey Rick! Lots of hair is better than no hair, right? 😛 Did you ever get those notes? I can email them if you haven't gotten them yet.

Prad, what's wrong with your computer? Looks like it's good timing that we'll be getting new ones once school starts! I'll take a look at Windsor Terrace too, but I'm almost sold on the Imperial because the management is SO nice (so far...) I'm a sucker for nice people 😀

JMJ: Good luck at UNE! It's so important to go to a place where you're happy and comfortable. Take care!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went to get my eyes checked this morning, and it was super messy in the streets. Basically, on some roads, all traffic was a stand-still. I didn't actually see any protesters, but their presence was felt! Definitely not a perk of mega-metropolis life! Did I mention that I can't wait to move to Des Moines??

Hey Jane,
JP emailed me with the notes but forgot to attach them. I asked him if he could send them again but I guess he is still gone( Didn't he go to Canada or something?). Anyways, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sending me the notes he sent you ([email protected]). So did you say you visited Des Moines already to do some apt shopping or did you just call them?

Later,
Leighton

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I have been emailing back and forth with a fourth year at DMU. He is doing a FP rotation at Doctor's hospital in Columbus, Ohio right now and he said that it blows. He said there basically isn't any hands on and warned against doing a rotation there. Just thought i'd share that with everyone. Later!

Leighton:

You've got mail!

I just did some browsing online, and then I emailed this realty company that manages a couple of the apartments around DMU (Imperial and Grand Prix, also a couple further down Grand). I think I'll take JP's advice and stay away from the Grand Prix. They sent me a couple of brochures, and an application, and we've been in contact through email.

Are you having any luck finding a roommate? I read in the pre-Osteo board that some other guy was also looking for a roommate, but was still deciding where to go (DMU or MSU, I believe it was).

I'll be going to Des Moines in the middle of May to take a look at apartments, and hopefully, if everything goes as planned, I can move sometime in June.

When are you planning to move?

~J

Here's what one person had to say about DMU rotations:

"I have heard that rotations in MI and Ohio are consistently strong. I would do as many as possible at programs in these states with DO residencies. Avoid as many as possible that are with private physicians who would accept you as a student on a volunteer basis - unless you have good info that you will be allowed to be fully involved."

Being that this was told to me through a PM, I don't want to name the source. 🙂

Looks like we're going to have to be very careful and very informed about choosing rotation spots.

However, isn't Doctor's Hospital where JP is going as part of OhioCORE?

Jane,
Well, if I don't go to OBC I may move a little early. Possibly July??? Maybe?? I'm not sure. I was possibly thinking about doing Diabetes Camp. Are you familiar with this program? I'm not sure if they have these camps anywhere else or not. Basically, it is a camp where kids of all ages with type I diabetes come to do normal camp activities but also learn about their disease and how to take care of themselves. I would basically be a camp counselor to these kids but as a their counselor I would be directly involved with their diabetes care. It is a great experience for them also because they get to meet other kids like themselves. My friends that have been in the past said it is a great experience. I wanted to go last summer but I didn't get to because I was too busy. By the time I find out about OBC though it may be too late for me to do this. So you are moving to Des Moines in June and going to look for apts in May? I was also thinking about checking apts out in May but probably not till the end of the month. I may just chill for the whole summer. I guess maybe I could find a sublease for the summer at the beach and just spend my time surfing. Do you know of anything that DMU does over the summer that students could get involved in like community service stuff or whatever? I think I remember reading that DMU does some kind of science program with kids(I think highschoolers) over the summer that students head up. I have to try and find it again on the website. Do you know anything about this? I wonder if they'd let first years work with the kids?

I remember JP saying that Ohio was suppose to be good but if you go to the CORE site (www.ohiocore.org) there are tons of rotations there. I can't remember if he said he was going to doctor's hospital or somewhere else (I'm also to lazy to search the thread for previous posts on that, lol). I agree that we are really going to have to be careful about what rotations to pick. We are really going to have to research things well. Are we allowed to try and set up stuff on our own? The chief physician in my reserve unit is also the chairman of OB/GYN at UF and teaches the medical students there. I'm thinking about talking to him about this situation and maybe he can direct me to a good hospital that the school can set up some rotations at for me. I'm hoping that I can just get some military rotations. For me, that would be the best situation. Well, I need to get some sleep, I have to be at lab early tomorrow ( 😴 ). I'll talk to you later.

Leighton

Leighton,

Did you get the PMs I sent you about the email? Apparently, Hotmail has a size limit of what can be sent? 😕

I haven't heard of anything about DMU and high school programs. My main reason for moving early is to give me time to find a car and get to know the streets of Des Moines 😛 The Diabetes Camp sounds really cool! But just chillin and surfing away the summer is also nice, so you can just relax and enjoy yourself.

I checked, and JP did say that his main/home hospital would be Doctor's Hospital. But maybe the experience could vary for different areas of rotation? Like, maybe the FP one isn't good, but the other ones are OK?

I think you have more freedom to go where you want for 4th year, not 3rd year.

What kind of lab are you working at now?

~J

Hey Jane,
Could you email me the notes at [email protected]. This one doesn't have a size restriction.

Hey ArmyDoc...what part of Florida are you from? I'm from St. Augustine and went to UCF for undergrad. Right now me and my family are living in Missouri (to be close to my wife's parents for a little while)...let me tell you I'm really missing the beach right about now...

Rick

Rick and Leighton: I'm sending the notes now...they're uploading as we speak (or type...)

You Floridians are lucky to have such nice beaches! I've got to see them one day. The Everglades sound cool as well. I feel so un-traveled!

hey jane,

Thanks for the notes...us floridians feel the same way...we'd like to see Cali one day too.

Leighton, the second email address also didn't take the file. I guess one of us can give you a paper copy before school starts!

Rick, it'd be nice if I could do a rotation in Florida! Maybe one in the non-rainy months in a field where I'd have time to run down to the beach! Hmm...

Rick,
I'm from Keystone Heights, FL but I live in Gainesville, FL. I go to the Univ. of Florida. So how do you like Missouri? Is the midwest really boring?

Jane,
I agree with you, it might just be the FP rotation at Doc. Hosp. that sucks. I am working in a lab through the nutrition department since I am a nutrition major. I am working on a thesis on whether an increase in dietary arginine decreases neutrophil accumulation in the lungs after an acute immune reaction. Don't worry about the notes, maybe you can give me a copy when I move up to Des Moines for school. Anyways, I have to go take care of some stuff, so I'll talk to you all later.

Later,
Leighton

Leighton, I'll be sure to give you a copy of the notes before school starts.

Where's Prad? I hope his computer isn't giving him too much trouble.

hey everyone!

canada was awesome! i learned about techniques that i won't see until second year, and got to meet great people from other schools. in addition, from speaking with other students at the conference i realized how truly blessed we were at dmu to have dr. boesler, the fellows, and the awesome second years who are always willing to help out. let's just say you guys will learn a lot of omm at dmu!🙂 oh, i don't want to spoil jp's thunder, because i know he would have written it if he had access to a computer, but, dmu was awarded with the UAAO's outreach chapter of the year. gosh, why does it always seem like there will be so much to live up to?

leighton,
welcome to dmu! i look forward to meeting you.

docgeorge,
i live at windsor terrace as well. it's really cool because my neighbor is also a first year and we have a second year living below us. although, we are quite sad she will be moving out to ohio as well for her rotations. we'll meet in the hall and speak/complain about our latest test, but it's just a time for us to socialize basically.

keep posting, and enjoy what free time you have left!!!!😛

kimberlee 😀

Hey Leighton,

I know where Keystone Heights is...We played you guys a bunch in high school baseball, mainly in American Legion Summer League. The only thing I remember about the town is that it was unbearably HOT (especially the doubleheaders). You ever make over to St. Augustine? If not, you should...it really is a beautiful town.

Rick

Wow.... Plenty of stuff to look at.... I merely glanced at them.

Kimberlee is right.... DMU won the UAAO Outreach Chapter of the Year!!! Yeepeeskeepee.... It's always nice to be noted for all of our hard work.

BTW, Kimberlee, there's really nothing to live up to. I'm sure you will create your own destiny and legacy.... That's why I know in my heart of hearts that you are the BEST person for the job of next year's National Rep for DMU UAAO.

Now.... regarding Doctor's Hospital. There are hospitals that are called "Doctor's".... so this may be a different hospital. I did talk to a student about the FP and one person was disappointed and the other person had fun. Personally, from talking to them that one person is more likely to go into FP and the other something else.... therefore it affected the way they interacted with the staff. In the end, it's really what you make of it.

Intro to Osteo Med Notes.... Rick, I sent it to you but I guess you got it. Leighton, I tried again and it told me that your email cannot handle the file size.... So I'm sorry, we may have to do it again when you're here unless someone else can get it to you.

If there was something I miss, ask again and I'll try to answer them.

Hey JP and Kimberlee! I'm glad you guys had fun in Canada. And it's awesome that DMU won the UAAO Outreach Chapter of the Year!

I had a question about Windsor Terrace. Do all the apartments have wooden floorboards? Is there a problem with creakiness or loud footsteps from the people above you?

I'm glad to have JP confirm that the rotations are what you make of them. I just can't imagine that any school could have negative feedback for 100% of their sites, that affect 100% of their students, 100% of the time. The unhappy ones are usually the louder ones, and more likely to make their cases known. 😛
