Hey Leighton,

I know where Keystone Heights is...We played you guys a bunch in high school baseball, mainly in American Legion Summer League. The only thing I remember about the town is that it was unbearably HOT (especially the doubleheaders). You ever make over to St. Augustine? If not, you should...it really is a beautiful town.

Rick

Rick,
Awesome!! Yeah, St. Augustine is where I usually surf (or use to when I had time, lol). I usually go to FA's or A street. I use to drive to St. Augustine almost every day when I was in high school. I agree, St. Augustine is very beautiful. I haven't been doing much surfing the last few years and I when I went over spring break I was amazed at how far they had extended the beaches. To me it seems as though they have screwed things up by extending the sand out so far. Anyways, got to run. Later!

Leighton,

That's so cool that I'm going to school in Des Moines, IA of all places and can talk to a classmate about sites in my hometown. I also surfed FA and A street. I also agree that they ruined it by extendeing the sand...takes away from the good surfing spots. Shoot, it was half the fun just to avoid the rocks by the pier at FA!
But I haven't surfed in a while also, mainly because of school. Even when I moved back home last summer...it was more of a business trip...having to visit my family, as well as my wife's. No time for the fun stuff. Speaking of St. Augustine, do you play golf and have you played any of the courses in St. Auggy Doggy?

Rick

Rick,
No, sorry I don't golf. I have been wanting to get into it because a lot of my friends golf but I've just never had the time. Yeah, it will be cool having someone to talk to about florida. By the way, do you know what FA stands for? My friends and I have been trying to figure that out for years. Anyways, I have to run.

Later,
Leighton

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I was at my doctor's office today and found out that my doctor's partner graduated from DMU. I spoke with him briefly and he confirmed that Michigan and Ohio were good rotations. Anyways, just thought I would share that with everyone.

Later,
Leighton

Hey Leighton,

I think FA will always be a mystery, but the people we talked to said it stood for FATAL ACCESS because so many kids/surfers were killed there back in the day. But I don't know for sure what it stands for.

What places did you hang out at when you were in S.A.? I've probably run into you once or twice...

My friend, you and I are going golfing before school starts. Once you start, you will be hooked...as long as you have a little patients(haha). And Prad, if you've never played, you're coming too! The girls can drive the carts!!! I'm just kidding Jane, you can come too.

Aww shucks....thanks guys!! 😉 I've never golfed either...so I just might end up being your exclusive cart driver 😀

St. Auggy Doggy?? What a cute nickname!

Hey guys my computer is still givin me trouble. The screen is lagging so far behiind what I'm typing it"s rediculus. It takes me about half an hour to scroll down to the bottom of the treead. This really really sucks. If any of you guys are computer savy I'd really appriciate some advice. Now that thats out of the way I'd love to play some golf with you guys. I havent played since high school, but I've been thinking about getting bback into it. JP I hope you had a really nice time in Canada. Jane how are you doing in in SF with all the prprotests? Any way I'll talk to you guys later. IIm typing blind so excuse me for the typos.

Dude, Prad, it's been a while since you've been on here! Did that problem with your computer happen suddenly? Does it only happen with the internet, or with all your other programs too?

The protests suck. Can you believe that the SF Chronicle actually said that some of the groups were upset that "they were unable to take over the bay bridge" last week? Take over the bridge?? That's a little dramatic. 🙄 And what really sucks is when the peace protests turn violent. But overall, it's pretty easy to avoid the crowds after you figure out what streets to take. How are things up in Sac-town?

Jane, yeah it does suck. The problems only happens when I'm online. Oh well at least I still have the computers on campus. Things are pretty mellow here in SacTo. It was pretty upsetting to see those PW's on TV. I just hope that this thing ends soon.

It is kind of funny that "Peace" Protests turn violent. Have to run to class talk to you later Jane

Hey Prad! Yeah, the news gets more and more intense everyday. I also hope that everything gets resolved soon and people can come home.

Do you use dial-up AOL as your internet provider? I use that, and it hasn't given me any problems. I'm definitely not computer-savvy so I have no idea what your computer is up to! That sounds pretty weird though, how the problem only happens when you're online. Hope it gets fixed soon!

When is your graduation?

hey guys,

will there be room for a soon to be 2nd year, (if she passes phys) who will be bored out of her mind, since she has to stay in des moines for monetary (?) reasons, to possibly join you for round of golf? of course i would need to take lessons first, unless mini putt putt counts!

i'm just kidding.

umm, i don't know if the weather will be tolerable for golf during the summer. i sure wasn't used to the humidity, but if that's no problem, i hear that there a some decent golf courses around des moines.

hope you guys have fun!

jane,

all of windsor terrace has wooden floors. my floors creak in certain areas, but i see that as being one of my apartment's many charms. i live on the top floor, so i don't hear that many creaks. hope that helps!

kimberlee 😀

Hi Kimberlee!

I will probably be staying in Des Moines during the summers as well (for the same reasons). What are you going to do with all that time?! Is it really humid in the summer? How is my hair gonna deal?? 😉

Thanks for the info on Windsor Terrace. I like wooden floors, but only if I'm on the top floor! I'll remember to check out that place when I visit in May.

~J

Hey fellow DMUers,

I haven't written in a while, but I've been kepping up on all your entries. I guess may is the right month to look for a place to live. Do you guys know if there's a waiting list for Windsor Terrace? From all your comments about this complex, I'm pretty sure I want to live there. Thanks

I live on the lower level.... Thank goodness, b/c when I moved the sofa I didn't have to get it up the stairs!!! Anyway, the floors do make sounds some time but I only notice this during the first couple of weeks.... after a while it doesn't really bother me much.... Quite honestly, I don't hear anything at all.... 😀

Summer here is no better than the valley.... there are days when it's scorching hot and humid but for the past two summers it hasn't been bad at all.

Tristan, I heard what happened to you.... I hope the admissions people squared that away... 😉 Typically there is a waitlist but because of DMU's schedule changes they do have room in Windsor Terrace. Now is the time to call them if you want a place here.

Another reason I wanted to place this entry is that I will not be as readily available in the site any more as most of my Master's courses are winding down and board study is taking it's toll....

But continue to post away and as I lounge around and take a break I'll make sure to make comments here and there....

If y'all have certain, specific questions for me just send me a Private Message or email me and I'll make sure to get you those information....

Remember, I'll be around during your orientation, please, please introduce yourself when you get the opportunity. I would love to meet you all.... Till next time, JP 😎

🙁 Aww JP, you're gonna be missed around here. Good luck with everything!! 🙂

Hey guys I'm back. well kinda of. I upgraded my AOL that helps a little bit but mostly my computer is just a piece of unk. It looks like we're getting a bunch of people lined up to golf. Well as long as every bodystrokes higher then me it's ok. 🙂

 I was serious about being the cart driver! I probably couldn't golf to save my life.

I'm thinking of getting a piece of exercise equipment for my apartment. What do you guys think: treadmill, elliptical trainer, or a bunch of Pilates tapes and a mat? Oh, those big exercise balls look mighty fun too! I would like a small treadmill, but I'm afraid it might annoy whoever lives below me. I just think it would save me a lot of time if I could get my 20 min. of physical activity at home, especially in bad weather. Any thoughts?

Yay, Prad is back!

I was thinking about getting an eliptical trainer. I was just thinking that I wouuld probabally hate the person above me if they were on their thread mill all the time. Six more weeks of this misrable school left. I feel so out of place on my campus it's a little sad. How is work going?

I am sooo tired of going to work. The only thing I like about it is the mice 😀 I'd rather just quit now and forget about the money, but my boss would probably come and hunt me down.

 I don't think I'll get the treadmill. It really would drive my downstairs neighbor nuts!

Yeah, so I was looking at sports equipment, and there's this thing called Tony Little's Freestyle Gazelle. It's not really an elliptical trainer, and it's supposed to be totally quiet. There were some pretty good reviews of it, and I remember seeing a TV infomercial on it a long time ago. I don't think I could handle watching the video of Tony Little that comes with it though!

What day is your graduation?

Jane you know for sure that you want a top floor apt? I'm sorry about work. My last final is on the 19th of May. Graduation is May 24 or something like that, but I'm not going. My parents really want me to go, but it really doesnt mean anything to me. I'll definately go to my Med school graduation though!

Only 53 more days left.

Prad,

You're not gonna walk? I had a few friends who felt the same way, but were forced into it by their parents. My graduation was before any of my finals!!! I had to go study right after the ceremony. Sucked...But it was fun. The speaker for the general commencement was Johnny Moseley(the Olympic skier guy), so I didn't go to that one. This is while Stanford got Condoleezza Rice for their speaker!! 🙄

I lived in a middle-floor apartment for two years, and the people above me were stompers. That's the one thing that always gets to me. I don't mind loud music (unless it's early on a weekend), but overhead footsteps have always been my pet peeve 😀 Silly me...

I'm so glad the weekend is here! Happy Friday!!

What's up everyone!! I am sitting in my lab right now waiting on a reaction, so I thought I'd chime in. I'm soooooooooo tired!! I've been here since 7 this morning and now it's...........just after nine and I won't be leaving for a few more hours. I was told this week that my thesis is due next friday and that some of my protein data is no good, so i've been stuck in this lab for the past two days trying to get new data. Research sucks!! Alright, so I have an idea!! We should all just blow off the first week of classes and go golfing!! Just kidding. I think we are going to end up with quite a little crowd though. That will be cool!! So has anyone went to the des moines register website and looked for apts? I went there like a month ago and found 3000 grand and windsor terr. but now they are gone, or at least I can't find them now. Does that mean that both of those apts are full or have a waiting list? Anyone know?

Jane,
Where do you work? Are you in a lab? I've seen those gazelles on tv! They look pretty cool! Some advise though, don't get a upstairs apt. if you are moving your own stuff! I live in a second floor apt. now and it sucked so bad moving everying up there.

Prad,
I also like the elliptical trainers. We have those in the gym here at school and they are awesome! Hope everything is going alright with your computer.

Ok well I have to finish my work. Talk to you all later!

Leighton

P.S. If this post reads weird in any way it is because I'm am totally out of it! Later!

Leighton,

That's a long time to stay at lab!! About moving -- Heck no, I'm not moving all of my stuff on my own! I'm going with a moving company who will do all the lifting and shoving. They even offered to pack my belongings, but I can handle that myself.

I've been working at a mouse mammary tumor/endocrinology lab for two years. Yes, research sucks. Especially with in vivo studies, where all of your data is at the mercy of little furry creatures.

Are you planning on doing more research in med school? I don't think I really want to, but if it's an interesting project with publishing prospects for me, it would be a nice distraction from school.

I've been looking at the Register site occasionally. I've never seen an ad for Windsor Terrace anywhere. 3000 Grand is still featured on some other site, probably apartmentbluebook.com. I don't really remember because there are quite a few sites with apt. listings. They're really adamant that you call them and won't tell you anything over email. I never called. But like JP said, now's a good time to get on the waitlist if there is one. If there isn't a preexisting list, then you would be the first in line if you called them now and let them know you're interested.

How's your roommate search going?

~J

Hey Jane and Leighton!!! And of course you too Rick. I went to my parents place for the weekend again. I so jellouse of them with DSL. I've decided that if the schools wireless internet doesnt reach allthe way to my apt. I'm going to get my self DSL. This stuff is just too cool. I'm sitting here listing to music from the internet and doing something else at the same time.

As far as not walking, I didnt walk in high school either. I graduated High school early and was in Advanced training for the Army when my class graduated, so my parents are kind of prepped for me not walking. Although it was kind of funny, they did'nt give my brother a choice when he graduated from HS.

So what are you guys upto this weekend. I'm just going to do some reviewing. The kids in the class that I'm TAing want me to hold a reivew session for them. Ughhh. I dont want to review cr@p I dont have to. I'm just too lazy do any thing this semister.🙄

I think I'll probally need to get an eliptical trainer or threadmill for my apt, otherwise I'll find excuses not to work out. That is one thing that I am truly lazy about all the time. I gotta change that.

Talk to ya all soon.

Ooh, speaking of DSL...so I was checking out phone service in Des Moines, and Qwest has DSL for like, $21.99! That's super cheap! And it's not a promo offer either. I wonder if everything is cheaper in Iowa...

Ok, Prad, you HAVE to walk for med school! No way out of that one!

I'm going shopping tomorrow. Such nice weather!

What class are you TAing for?

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. You guys should definitly go golfing, I don't know how myself but it seems to be a skill all doctors know. Maybe you guys could get it added as a class. Golf for Future doctors 101. I know some of you guys are tossing around the idea of buying exercise equipment, I would hold off on that. I have a stair stepper in my apartment that just sits there while I use the campus gym everyday. No need to get a treadmill when you can run outside most of the year. One good way to get rid of excuses, is make a running group. Then you have good ole peer pressure to get you running 🙂 Anyway, I should be going to bed, we had class tonight and class all weekend long...boards are evil! 😉

WARNING!!!!!! I'm about to vent!

I really have to start working out, I've gained like 60 pounds since I started college. People who met me college dont believe it's me when they look at some of my old pics.😡

Those damn midnight study sessions with pizza and beer really did me in. OK having said that I'm makeing a resolution to stop eating cr@p and start working out today!!!! Ok there I've put my resolution in writing now lets see if I can stick to it.

DSL for 21.99 Thats really good. I do rember that Jamie Taweel had some problems with qwest when he moved out there, hopefully they've fixed that by now. As for the calss I'm TA'ing, it's Gross Anatomy, it's moslty full of PT students. I was really going hard out and hitting Moore and later Hollinshead in great detail, now I'm just kind of curisng reviewing just enoughf not to look like a fool in Lab. But now that they want me to hold a review for them aobut the stuff that the prof went over in lecture. This means I have to get my butt back in grear. Jane have fun shopping. Are you just getting stuff for your place in Iowa?

Katie, thanks for the info about the exercise equipment. I'll keep that in mind. Good luck on your boards.

hey guys,

i don't ever recall seeing an ad for windsor terrace when i was trying to look for a place to live--basically everything was word of mouth. jeanine and tim know that a lot of students want to live there, so they don't need to advertise. if you want, i called them and placed myself on a waiting list and they had an apartment waiting for me when i arrived. their number is 515-279-5543. it might take them a while to respond though because they are super busy. hope that helps!

kimberlee 🙂

sorry, a correction needs to be made.

their number is 515-277-5543!

Hey Prad,

I can sort of relate. I made time in college to work out, did Pilates almost everyday. Then this year happened. I didn't gain a lot of weight, but I just feel stiff and flabby. I like exercising for study breaks, which is why an exercise machine in my apt. would be nice, since I won't have time to go through a whole set of Pilates. I'll check out the school gym first, though!

I wanted to get some sneakers today, so I went to Niketown. They didn't have my size in either of the two pairs I wanted. So then I checked out the men's shoes, and they just look so....weird. The Shox design (with the spring-like rubber things in the heel) is just odd-looking, and a lot of other shoes look like they're wrapped in foil (lots of really shiny metallic material). What's with Nike's styles these days? 😕

But I did end up getting a pair of jeans! 😀

I think I'm going to get a lot of apt. stuff from Ikea. Cheap and functional!

Kimberlee,
Did you move into Windsor Terrace without looking at it beforehand? How did you get your belongings from CA to IA?

Good luck with Boards, Katie!

Ikea do they even have those in Iowa? Sorry about the shoes, at least you got some jeans.

There's no Ikea in Iowa. But Ikea.com is everywhere!

What are you up to this weekend, Prad? Still doing anatomy stuff?

Actually I'm about to start.

I just hoped over to the Ikea web site, stuff looks pretty good. Why are'nt you out partying Jane?

🙁 Most of my friends moved back to their hometowns after graduation (they weren't from Nor-Cal). So not many people left to party with. The ones that are still around have the most incredibly settled lifestyles.

Aren't you supposed to be reviewing?

There are lots of things that I should be doing.🙄

Sory about your frinds moving away, that really sucks. Most of my friends have moved on are "settled" also. 🙁 One frined got married and I havent heard from him since. Another one got a job...and so on and so on...

Yeah, the ones with jobs are the worst!! They are either too exhausted to do anything else or they only hang out with their coworkers. 🙄

Hmm, I don't know of anyone who got married (of the people I went to school with). I bet they'll all get hitched right around the time I'm studying my life away for the boards!!

The crazy thing is we volunteer for this life style. I sometimes wonder why I'm putting my self thorugh this, and then I turn on "Trauma, Life in the ER" and I see surgeons slicing and dicing and it brings a warm fuzzy feeling to the pit of my stomach.😀 😀

 True!

Alright, I'm gonna go kill some time in front of the TV. Good luck with anatomy! And have fun the rest of the weekend!

So, I'm either going to DMU or MSUCOM. ANy Advice on pickin'?

Also, any advice on what I should do for the summer. I tried to get some info on doing some research this summer and have been in contact with Dr. Larsen. I even drove down (from Ames) and talked with Dr. Steele. I also thought about getting a start on the MPH program, but the first classes start the first week of May--and yeah, I still have class at ISU that week.

Anybody know anyone who commutes from Ames or Ankeny? My Girlfriend got in Vet School at MSU and Iowa State. We figure Ankeny is about half way (so when we get married sometime...)

Later,
Eric

Hi Eric,

You can't go wrong with either school! MSUCOM is a super school, and it's always ranked on US News, if that means anything. Other than that, I don't know a whole lot about the school. Does your girlfriend have a preference as to which school she wants to attend?

What do you like/dislike about each school? It could be helpful to write or type up a list so that you can actually *see* how you think of each school.

How long have you lived in Iowa?

Jane

Luckystar,
We haven't really discussed it yet, but know that we have to start making some decisions. I think she is a little partial to MSU because it's much cheaper (she's from Michigan), but I dislike it because I really do not want to take a year off (I'm from Wisconsin) to gain residency (I've already been approved to defer). I've tried looking to find some kind of research position in Lansing area, but have been mostly unsucessful so far.
I like DMU overall. I know the facilities aren't that much to boast about, I think they were better than MSU's (a remodeled dorm). Also, they do PROsections at MSU (they already disected them for you), which I don't really like. I've lived in Iowa for the past four years (while at Iowa State) and we have lots of friends in the Des Moines area and like it, but it is a 45 min drive from Ames to DMU.
Anyway, just giving yea some things we are thinking about. Thanks.
-=Eric

I got some anatomy done Yea!!!!!

Jane I love that Ikea site, I think I'm gonna get my desk from it. What moveing company did you finally end up deciding on?

eschauberger I understand your delima, my gf and I were in the same position regarding medical school. KC vs DMU. In the end just pick the school that's the best for each of you and drive on, if your relationship is strong, the seperation should'nt hurt it. Just my $0.02 though. Good Luck to the both of you.

Eric,

I also think that prosection is a bad idea for learning anatomy. I wouldn't want to take an extra year off either. Do they have a DO/MPH program at MSU? Maybe you could work on your MPH during that year if you chose to go there. But if you choose DMU, maybe you can set up your 3rd and 4th year so that you would be in Michigan. I think there's a lot of possible rotation sites in Michigan for DMU students. Then, you'd only be away from your gf for 2 years. Besides, the both of you would probably be so busy for those 2 years that it would take a lot of work to spend quality time with each other even if you guys were living together in Ankeny.

I thought that MSU had a large research facility? I could be wrong.

Prad,

I think I'm going to go with All Star moving (www.all-starmoving.com). They're based in Sunnyvale. The cost is based on how much all of your things weigh. My estimate was about $700, including loading/unloading.

I love Ikea! I think I'm going to visit the store to check out the stuff I want. Get a catalog mailed to you, it has some neat stuff in there! Is there a store by where you live?

Jane,
I have one piece of advice for you when you move: Make sure that your moving company is legit( 2 Legit, 2 Legit 2 Quit, Hey Hey!...sorry, flashback to Hammer days😎 ). I just watched a special report a couple of weeks ago warning against moving companies. The estimate is just that. Once they have your belongings in the truck, they charge you double and hold your stuff for ransom. Maybe your company is credible...but just a heads up!

I try to look out for my Peeps!

Rick

LMAO!!! Rick, I will never forgive you for putting the image of MC Hammer into my head! Those pants, that hair!!! 😱

Thanks for the heads-up. That's what I'm worried about too! This company's been around for more than 7 years, they're registered with the Better Business Bureau, and they have multiple licenses. But still, that doesn't mean that they won't try to rip me off. I don't know what else I can do, because a road trip with a U-Haul would take too long, and shipping my things with Amtrak like JP did wouldn't work for me since I'm not planning on getting my car until after I get settled in Des Moines. And I can't rent a car because of that stupid age limit! Argh...

Speaking of peeps, Easter's coming up, which means lots of little squishy yellow chicks for me! 😀

Going to Michigan for the final two years is a possibility, but we are more for being driving distance away. MSU probably does have a MPH program, but I'd be paying out of state for those credits. At DMU the cost of the credits for the MPH is half if you are already a student--putting the MPH at a nifty price of about $10000 (which is a steal compared to most programs).

Our relationship is pretty strong, but one of my worries about going to MSU is that she would be in school and I wouldn't, so I'd have a lot more time than she. Our relationship is a little backwards and I'm the one who really needs more quality time for me to feel like our relationship is in good shape. No time together=something must be wrong. It's unconscious and I can't do much about it. So basically, she'd be studying all the time, and I'd come back from work and have not too much to do and be wanting to see her, she'd feel bad but need to study (and she really focuses on what's in front of her), in turn, I'd just feel depressed. And this has nothing to do with the relationship being oneway or any of that. She loves me a great deal--her Love Language is just different than mine.

Whereas in Des Moines, we'd be able to see each other on the weekends. And I would be just as busy as her. She has also thought about asking to see if she could defer her admission to Iowa State Vet School to gain residency (which probably wont be allowed) and then alos take the MCAT and apply to DMU. I told her about the Clinica Medica (the free hispanic clinic) and she loved the idea (she a Bio/Spanish Double Major).

hello. i'll be joining you all in des moines this august. i'm 27 and currently live in chicago.

marc

Eric,

It sounds like you two have a great relationship! Don't feel bad about needing to spend time together, like you said, it all depends on the dynamics of the "love language" in the relationship. (I like that concept!)

Hmm...Here's my opinion (so take with a grain of salt!!), I would stay in Iowa. Did your gf go to ISU too? Those years didn't count towards a residency status? Student years don't count, huh? Is vet school her dream, or does she also want to be a human physician (which is why she would take the MCAT and apply to DMU)? Plus, money has got to be a factor, and if you're doing the MPH too, it sounds like you would save a ton by going to DMU.

How much time do you have to decide?

Jane
