Prad,

Definitely get steel shafts with Regular flex. Graphite is good because it adds distance, however, you lose a lot of accuracy when you go to graphite. I'd say stick with steel until you're really good, then upgrade to graphite. (Even Tiger uses steel in all his clubs). Also don't get a stiff shaft unless you have a fast swing speed because then you won't be able to get the ball airborne as easily.
I'm not a pro, but these are a couple of hints that I've picked up along the way....More like trial and error!😡
By the way...finally got out to play golf for the first time since August of last year....YUP definitely NOT a pro!

Hope this helps

Rick

Rick, thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna get the cheapest metal shafts that I can get for now. I'll trade up later.

Guy's the time is really starting to fly by now. I can't believe that I'll be apt shopping in less then a week. Talk to you guys later

Prad

Oh yea, I ran across a great website, pathguy.com check it out. I'm off to the gym🙂

Hey guys,

Looks like Kelly and I will be in Des Moines from May 15-17 to look for a place to call home. Good luck to everyone else with the apartment hunting. Jane, if you and your dad want to meet us for lunch or something, that would be great...

Rick

Hey Rick,

It would be really nice to meet you and Kelly! Will Teagan be with you too? The thing is, we're arriving in DSM Friday evening, and leaving Sunday morning. I need to see when we can schedule visits with each of the apartments before I can tell you if we can make it for lunch on Saturday. Where are you planning to look?

Prad, are you leaving for DSM on Thursday or Friday? Have lots of fun!

Jane, I'm heading out on Sunday. I'll let you guys know where the good places are. I'll keep an eye out for 3 bedrooms for ya rick.

I hope the weather will be nice for you Prad! I really want to be able to get a place when I go, so that my dad and I can go shopping for things the same day and put them in the apartment. Keeping my fingers crossed 🙂

JP, thanks for agreeing to give my dad and I a tour of the campus. I did'nt want to bother you but when I called they asked if I knew anybody there and I said you. Thank you agian JP.

You dont like to mess around do you Jane? I hope you find a really nice place when your out there. Jane how does Suday the 25th sound to you?

Sunday the 25th sounds great! Where should we meet?
(Anybody else who wants to come is welcome!)

I hope you find a nice place too, Prad!

Prad,
Good luck finding an apartment, keep us posted on the really great/not so great places. Have a good time in Des Moines.

I still can't believe we'll be starting medical school in 3 months. 🙂 I'm so excited....Although I'm not excited to pack all of my stuff. 🙁

Does anyone here have pets that they're bringing to school? Does windsor Terrace allow pets?

You're welcome.... 😀 It's really no bother, anything for y'all....

Although there may be some shuffling during lunch time as I just found out that I'm also scheduled to do a small talk regarding DOCare International Inc. to the International Club.

I guess the plan is I'll go ahead and take you for a tour at 11:45am and get both of you lined up for lunch while I go speak to the International Club and be back in time to talk to you both 🙂 Unless, you both want to come into the meeting and listen to my whole spill about DMU students trying to get international experience.... You just let me know and I'll make it happen.... 🙂

Jenny,
No pets are allowed in Windsor Terrace, although I do know of people hiding pets.... shhhhh 😉 But you really have to be in good footing with the managers for that to be allowed... Imperial does allow pets so you may want to look into that.

For those of you coming on the weekend of the 24th in May.... that's graduation for COMS so you'll probably get a chance to see campus when there's tons of peeps....

I just realized I haven't posted my board factoids for awhile....

Here's a lil' somethin' somethin'.... 😉

CHOLINERGIC NEUROEFFECTOR JUNCTION:
- Choline is accumulated in the presynaptic cleft of a nerve fiber via an active transport mechanism such as a Na+ pump.

What inhibits this Choline update into the presynaptic cleft?
Hemicholinium

Acetylcholine is synthesized from what two compounds?
Choline and Acetyl Co A

- What enzyme synthesizes acetylcholine from choline and acetyl-co-A?
Choline acetyltransferase

- What's the wonderful drug that a lot of people with wrinkles are flocking the plastic surgeon's offices want??? It smooth's out the wrinkles but really damn toxic if the physician doesn't how much does to give....
Botulinum Toxin (AKA: "Botox")

- What is the relation of botulinum toxin to acetylcholine?
Botulinum toxin interacts with a synaptobrevin and other proteins to prevent acetylcholine release.... the sucker blocks ACh thus you get flaccid paralysis of your muscles..... therefore, when given in the right dosage can smooth away those fine wrinkles...

- To bridge our knowledge from Micro to Pharm, what organism releases botulinum toxin as its mechanism for protecting itself from predators?
Clostridium Botulinum

- Where would you suspect we would get or acquire clostridium botulinum?
HONEY.... it affects infants so don't ever feed your babies honey or you're in big trouble.... The other place is when you see a CANNED FOODs that have those small bubbling effect on it or "improperly canned foods" or "bulging cans".... so watch out for those kind of canned foods in those dollar-dollar stores. "BOTulinum is from BOTtles of food (causing flaccid paralysis)' - First Aid for Step 1 -

- Are Clostridium Botulinum, gram positive or gram negative?
Gram Positive bugs that release exotoxins (botox).

There you go.... 😀

Enjoy.... there may be more to come....

JP, as far as going to the talk count me in. I cant wait. I cant believe that time is flying by so fast.

Jenny just do what I'm doing, just take your clothes and rent somefurnature for the next two years.

Jane, since we're in your neck of the woods you pick, as long as theres plenty of parking.

Hey all!

JP, what's the countdown to boards at? How's everything going for you? By the way, I did the medterms thing that you gave us the link to, and it's really fun! Everybody should go and do it! Good stuff...

About furniture: I looked into rentals, and they're damn expensive in the long run (2 yrs). But if you find a cheap place, Prad, let us know!

Jenny, what kind of pets are you thinking of bringing with you?

I can't believe how fast time is flying by either! Can't say I'm sad about that though!

Prad, I'll think about where we should meet up. Thanks for coming all the way down here! Tell Darci I said HI! 😀

I've always seen those warnings on honey bottles. Never knew why. Now I know! 😀

Luckystar,
I'm just bringing my cat, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a place that allows cats. 🙂

Docgeorge,
I talked to the four seasons and they rent a 1 bedroom apartment fully furnished for like $600/month. Maybe you'll want to check that out.

oh and if anyone's going to be in Seattle, I'd love to meet up with them. 🙂
Jenny

Hey everybody! Class of 2006 here. Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm looking forward to meeting you all next year (or over the summer, if anyone's going to be around)...and that I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for those of you who are still in DMU limbo 🙂
JP, I don't know where you find the time to participate in so many activities, study for boards and moderate this forum. I applaud you
I, on the other hand, will be quite satisfied to emerge from my first year of med school unscathed 😛 Although, in retrospect, I suppose it wouldn't be such a struggle if only I could give up my addictions to Must See NBC Thursday and American Idol...and maybe one or two other T.V. shows....hee hee.
Good-luck to everyone apartment hunting this month. I know everyone wants to be near campus, but don't write off West Des Moines too quickly. That's where I live, and the commute's not bad at all- plus, it's nice to get away from campus once in awhile.

32 more days!!! Yikes.... Gotta get studyin'.... 😀

I just paid my final deposit. I couldn't have waited any longer, but I'm really happy with my decision and now it's official i'm going to DMU next year. 🙂 YEAH!
Jenny

 to Jenny! Way to go! By the way, where is the Four Seasons?

LynnGweeny: Hi! Yeah, it's no question that JP is amazing. What are you planning to do with your summer?

8 more days of work...34 days until I move(tentative)...97 days to orientation!

Aww, this is the second week that Friends has made me sad 🙁

Hey Lynn, I think I'll be like you and keep my TV addictions 😀

YOU've gotzzzz to watch that MUST SEE TV....

Hey, did y'all notice that they were talking about the very thing I was teaching you all..... BOTOX!!! in ER tonight...

Never use it in your neck, like the way this patient did because if you look above from what I typed up that Botulinum toxin causes placcid paralysis.... if you're esophagus is injected with it, then good by parastalsis of your food and you can aspirate.... 😉

Who said TV wasn't educational.... 😎

It's a coincidence but one of our clinician's daughter is going through surgery for a cervical fracture at C2.... IN the show ER tonight, they had a small child with a C5 servical fracture.... that would mean complete paralysis....

Anyway, here's a board factoid for you.... the MOST vulnerable position of the Cervical spine is in EXTENSION.... C2-C3 is also called the "hangman's fracture" because if someone was to asphysiate (sp?) themselves then this would be a perfect spot to complete kill themselves.... That sounds really morbid....

Jenny

CONGRATULATIONS!!! JENNY!!!! Welcome to the family.... 🙂

I'm positive you'll have a wonderful experience here at DMU.... I've no doubt that all of you will become great physicians....

😕 😴

Ok--well i am back. JP, I was happy to meet ya nad honestly diddn't realize the name was JP. I just look at the "on-line" name when I talk with folks. Anyway, the school was nice and in a lovely area. I was very impressed that every one there, even in the throughs of exams, appeared to be very happy with there school and education.

Thanks to all you well wishers also. It was nice to get home and find all good thoughts sent my way. However, I fear it has all been to no avail. I clled yesterday and go the word. It looks as though I will only be considered for the waiting list. So, now I am in the position of regrouping and reevaluating my options. The experance this year has been exhausting bouth finacaly and emotionaly, but it too has been educational. If I should try again next year, I will be in the know!

So far I have three schools left. All would make me an FMG however. Hummm---I must say Ireland is looking better by the day and so are the white beaches and warm waters of AUC and SGU! My best to you all!

😎

Sorry to hear the news, Valmont. 🙁
Did they tell you anything about how fast the waitlist usually turns around? Many people are still holding spots at more than 1 school, and should be making their decision very soon.

Anyway, of the three schools that you still have to choose from (and it's great that you have a choice!), Ireland sounds good. Which one are you leaning towards at this point?

Jane
(it would be so funny if you called me "luckystar" in real life  )

As for the turn arround---I haven't a clue! As best I can tell, very few students turn down DMU.

As for the three remaining schools, I don't have a choice right now. They have yet to make a decission on my application at RCSI and U. of Dub.---Cork turned me down (got the letter as i walked in the door from DMU) and Trinity (yet to get the letter from Trin. so it is unclear as for now if it really is no).

On to warmer climbs, AUC looks OK and the Island is to die for! Good rate of pass and good rounds in US. Cost, I didn't mention cost. Of the three good off shore schools it has the best life style and lowest tuition. It would be the same as if I were to stay in state! SGU, has a Vet school, Under Grad and Grad.---not bad. The good part is it has the best rep., I can spend 9 extra months there and get an MD/MS. Howere, it costs out the ASS! To the tune of 30,000+ thousand!

I should hear from Ireland in a matter of days.

Hey Valmont, let us know what you end up doing ok? I know that everything will work out for you because you have such a great attitude! Take care 🙂

Prad, what's up?

Valmont, I'm sorry about the wait list, but just like Jane said, you'll do fine no matter where you go. Just going out of the country, to me anyway shows how dedicated you are to becomeing a physican. Good luck, and no matter what never give up.

I just came back from the DMU web site, they have the new student information up and all I can say is HOLY ****!!!!! That computer initative is insane!!! I cant wait to start only 97 more days, got to go and change my MS #. Talk to ya all after I get back from DSM.

 You just accomplished what I thought was impossible, Prad! I'm even more excited to start now 😀 That is an awesome site! I'm glad I can finally see dates and more information about everything. Ok, I'm going back to check it out some more... Have a safe trip!

Anybody know why the Surgery Club isn't listed on the Clubs list? Is there an Internal Med. club too?

PS - from the tiny picture they have of the laptop, it looks exactly like my Dell. But, it could just be a picture and not representative of what we're really getting. A Dell would be nice!

I'll drop by university computing and ask what we are getting. I'll also find the apt complexes which will have the WiFi installed in them. If anybody knows apt's with High speed access as a bonus let me know. Later jane.

Jeebus, (obvious reference to the simpsons) Jane where the heck are you posting to beat me? That smarts!😉 😀 😛

What are you talking about, Prad?? 😕

Oh, that would be great if you can find out about WiFi in which apts. DMU rocks! Did you see the part where they said they'll have dial-up numbers for us all over the country, so that we'll always have free connection no matter where we go?

Ok, gotta go nitey nite now...😴

Hey everyone,
I saw the new update on the DMU webpage. 🙂
I still can't believe how soon school will start, I'm so excited.

I think that the four seasons apartments are about 4-5 blocks away from DMU, so I've heard that it's about a 5-10 minute walk.

Jane I think that they computers may be Dell's, because I've been told that dell has the best prices for university packages.

Prad, how are the apartments looking?
Jenny

Hi Jenny,
Yeah, Dell has really great discounts for students too! I can only imagine what kind of discounts they give to universities. I got my laptop from them for $300 less than what I would have paid as a regular customer. What I love about them is that you can customize every aspect of them. I read in DMU's website that we may be able to customize the ones they give us, but of course, we'd have to pay for that if we want it. Thanks for the info on Four Seasons! I'll try to check them out when I go next week, and I'll post my experiences. Do you have a car right now? Are you going to ship it?

~J

Jane,
I do have a car now, I'm going to drive it out there.
have fun apartment shopping.
Jenny

Where is spring? It still feels like winter here. 🙁

Are the thunderstorms pretty bad right now in DSM? I can't believe there were like, 80 tornadoes that touched down in the midwest/south. That's incredible. There was some really unbelievable footage of one of the bigger ones too. A little nervewracking, but amazing to see.

Hey guys I'm back alive and well. DSM was great. It stormed pretty bad on sunday night by monday it was overcast with a little wind, but on tuesday it was perfect. Kind of like Monterey on a nice spring day. I met JP at school and he gave my father and I a tour of the campus. By the JP you've lost some weight, I need to get your secerete.

As far as the computers go the people at IT said that they would be Gateway 450's and that they have'nt choosen the hand heald yet, but the lady thought that they would be either Dell's or Gateway's running the Windows Pocket PC software.

Now for the jucy stuff. I found a place to live right across the street from 3000 grand at a very reasonable price. I ended up paying 600 for a two bedroom apt (thats all they had and it was better then paying 750 at 3000 grand). Stay away from Grand Prix appartments at any cost!!!!! Widsor terrece was nice, but it was'nt for me.

The managers were very nice and helpfull. I just did'nt like the feeling that I got from the appartments they showed me. I would have probabally ended up living there had I not found the place that I'll be moving into now or could'nt pallet the 750 rent at 3000 grand. I really did'nt check out Imperial (sorry Jane). Oh yeah, the rent at Windsor is 550 for a decent 1 bedroom or you could get one that was a little smaller for 530.

Rick there are pleanty of 3 bedrooms provided that you can live a couple of blocks away from school. Fact is if you dont mind driving to school it's a renters market out there. I forgot to ask Widnsor about three bedrooms, but I'm sure they have them and 3000 grand has them but there a little pricey.

Well thats my report.

Over and out

Docgeorge,
what's the name of the place that you decided on? Does it include all utilities? Carpet/hardwood? Did you happen to look at the Hampton House? That's awesome that you found a place. 🙂 So when does your lease start? Sorry for all of the questions, i'm just really still trying to decide if I want to go out there to look or just find a place site unseen, which makes me nervous.
thanks
jenny

Prad!!! Glad you're back! Ooh, Monterey weather is lovely 😀

Thanks so much for all that info! You rock...

I talked with Imperial today and they are going to have 3 1bdrms available by June.

That place of yours sounds awesome! You're going to have so much space too, with 2bdrms! It's going to turn into a crash pad for us SDNers hehe. Is it the Pink Palace that JP mentioned a while ago?

Gateways are nice. I considered getting one of those instead of the Dell, and I actually think the Gateways are cuter (nice cow pattern 😀). But Dell had a better price for the package at that time. Cool!!

I'll tell you about my experience after I go, Jenny, but I doubt it will be as in-depth as Prad's. I'm planning to look at the Imperial, Four Seasons, and Windsor. Since I'm only going for the weekend, I don't know if I can just go around and check for other openings.

I can't wait to visit DSM! How's the campus looking, Prad?

I only really looked on Monday. You can knock out places in about 10min. I went through about 10 places quick. Bam...Bam...Bam and it was done. I even had Tuesday to sight see a little bit. The temporary gym is almost done and they should be knocking down the old girls school sometime this month.

Jenny and Jane check your PM's

check yours too! 😀

check yours again😛

Hi!
Sorry I have not posted for a while...I have been really busy with work and planning for graduation=)

Prad (or anyone else) - Do you know the name of any of the apartment complexes that have 3-bedrooms? And what do you mean a couple blocks away...like really a few blocks or a few miles?

Does anyone know if we will be provided laptop cases or if we need to purchase our own?

Thanks!
Sarah

Prad,
check your PM.

Sarah, I saw several places with three bedrooms, you just have to hoof it. When I say a couple of blocks it's really more like 3 or 4 blocks. You should'nt have any trouble finding a place.

Also dont by a laptop, you will be given a lap top and a handheald computer.

Jenny, I ended up getting Verizion, good service and good deal.

Sarah, they didn't mention anything about cases on the website. I would hold off on buying one until they tell us what exactly is in the package they're giving us. Besides, the average case is heavier than the computer! I use a smaller bag instead, like a messenger bag. It's much lighter, and I'm not such a klutz that I'll bang it around, so it works perfectly.

Prad, thank you thank you thank you for all of your help!

So I just came back from meeting 4 other SDNers!! It's so cool just to meet people that you only know by their posts. I can't wait to meet all of you 😀
