Dude, I was all happy just being a lurker and now you have to "call me out". Aye, I'm down for doing this whole med skool thing at DMU next year........ and as for you my little salt lake city punk, don't you go attending any of those other 18 million schools that you were accepted to. I don't care if Harvard gave you a full ride and John Hopkins will pay you $50K to come there, you're butt better be here at good ol' Des Moines with the rest come next summer. :scared:

By the way, has anyone here heard from previous students of solid places to live (i.e. affordable, good location, and quality living)??

Hi...saw your post about "where to live."

DMU is on the south side of grand. The north side of grand is lined with a variety of apartments that will let you walk to class in 5-10 minutes.

From what I've gathered, 3000 Grand and Grand Prix look to be the "nicest"...

I'm at Windsor Terrace which is next door to Grand Prix

Imperial is next door to us.

Some of the apartments have internet provided through DMU so you don't have to buy it on your own - Windsor Terrace isn't one of them.

If you don't mind driving to school there are a lot of apartments available around Des Moines as well. You might also consider buying a place in town if you're going to be here for 4 years and do your rotations locally.

I'll take some digital pictures of Windsor Terrace and post them to this thread and maybe some first/second years who live in the other complexes can do the same for their properties.

Congratulations you guys - welcome aboard. This is really a great school; you'll enjoy it.

Well sent in my deposit today. I'm still waiting on one other school atm, but would definitely be very happy at DMU. Any good suggestions on where to live. I have a wife and 3 small children. Looking at town homes perhaps, decently close to school. My wife most likely won't be able to work initially either.

I live about 15 minutes from campus. 3 bdrm/2 bathroom apt for pretty cheap. Three other 1st years live in this complex, too. They have wives & family. You can't beat the price, the place is clean, and coming from Seattle, 15 minutes is nothing in terms of a commute. Driving in the snow is way easier than I thought it would be, too.

What complex do live in and what do you mean by "cheap"?

Ooh, ooh, I want to know the answer to the above questions as well. I don't know if an apartment perse will be the answer. I'd have to see them first. Been spoiled living in a townhouse with a garage, etc.
 
That's very reasonable. I guess we'll have to start looking around springtime.

Damn, that's not relatively cheap...that is incredibly cheap. Right now I pay $1350 for 3 deroom/2 bath and that's considered cheap for here. Definitely will be nice paying less in rent next year.

Wow, that sounds like a pretty decent deal. Do you think you post post any pics by chance? My wife, little rugrat, and I will definitely have to check out that place. Is it in a decent neighborhood? My wife is looking for somewhere where she will feel safe going for walks alone and things of that nature. 🙄
 
I live w/ my wife at the Imperial (directly across from the AC entrance). Although some halls have a distinct smell to them, we got lucky b/c our hall isn't one of them. It is very cheap and the apartments are pretty nice. We pay $580 a month for our one bedroom (Two bedrooms are $620, I think), WiFi is from DMU (free), and are only responsible for the electric bill (~ $20/month).

By living here we have been able to live very comfortably on my wife's teacher salary and I have been able to reduce my second semester loan amount (*cheering*). Congrats on choosing DMU.

No one will mess with your wife because her husband is such a strong stud. Word gets around, you know. (please don't hurt me) I'm small and fragile. :scared:

It's O.K. dude...... you are just dealing with small man syndrome. Unless a person is over 6'5" and 240 then it is something you will have to cope with. I'm sure DMU offers counseling and such 😀 Oh yeah, check this out. Wife made me sell my baby (Dodge Stealth R/T) for a Dodge Grand Caravan !!!!!!
Ack..... gotta be all responsbile and stuff....... at least the Caravan is a sport edition (j/K)! Did I mention that it came complete with built in baby seats??? Aye, seems to me she's planning for more?!?!?

Dorm style, I guess. It's hard going from living in a house, to living in an apartment... we'd been living in our home 3 years when we moved here... and we've had to adjust to apartment living again.

But, it's temporary. Our home back in Washington is waiting for us with open arms. We miss it and look forward to going back.

...if I could just transplant DMU with all it's staff to Washington...

Ok, I'm not fragile. Just a dainty 6'7" 270 lbs. Anyway, a mini-van? Dude, you have lost your boys, if you know what I mean. Built in baby seats? you might as well move to Utah after you graduate so you can hang out with me and the rest of us here with 10+ kids. :laugh: If my wife told me I had to get a mini-van...I'd be going to school alone (in the carribean) :laugh:
 
Quick question: I received conformation for my deposit as I paid with credit card over the internet, but will I receive something telling me that they received the sheet of paper I signed and mailed in? I thought they give us a password or something to look up apartrments and such, through there website. Let me know.

I was wondering the same thing. I haven't received any confirmation other than the email receipt.

Also, for all those still in undergrad like me... Good luck during finals!

I also just received an email confirmation. I think the additional information comes to us in February??
 
After you send in your deposit, you'll start getting all kind of papers in the mail. Then it will stop for months, and then start back up again, I think in April or May. You won't really know anything about orientation until I think early May. Then you'll recieve a big packet of stuff. It's fun waiting for stuff, but as the time gets closer you'll start wanting to be at school already. Don't rush it. Enjoy life a little bit. It goes by way to fast.

Now, back to the previous scheduled lower limb........

I will be in DMU class of 2010. I had been reading these forums, and like everyone else...I am not taking biochem. I work full-time, and was scheduled for it, but just took out my registration. So I will be going into it blindly with everyone else. Good luck....see you there.
 
I actually just finished my first/last semester of BioChem at my undergrad school. Interseting stuff, but I heard that if you take it in college it only helps for the first week or 2 anyways in that you have seen some of this stuff before. So I wouldn't worry about it.

hey guys, i haven't interviewed at dmu yet, but it is one of my top choices. i was just wondering, does dmu have their own specialized departments? for example, most allopathic schools have a dept. of surgery, nephrology, cardiology, etc. etc. etc. If not,how important is it to have these particular departments in a medical school? thoughts/ ideas?

I honestly can't say. I don't think that they have seperate educational departments like those you mentioned at the school (we DO have surgical skills labs as part of the curriculum though). But there is a clinic right next to the school, and I'm sure specialists work there. As to how much learning 1st and 2nd years do there underneath these specialists I couldn't say...

Perhaps a question that should be asked of current DMU students? Maybe in the Osteopathic forums?
 
I can't see any of 'em on one computer and only #3 on another. Pretty cool how it has good refresh rate and you can actually see people walking.
 
Are there any mountain bikers in the group? Does anyone know if there are any good trails in Des Moines?

On another note, am I the only one who races home from work each day to rip open the mail box to see if DMU has sent anything regarding next year? I thought that habit would stop once I was accepted...it has almost gotten worse now that I know where I am going! Is it normal or do I need to get a life?
 
I'm sure its normal. But for some reason I have hit this massive laid back stage. I'm home on break and won't be checking my mail for 3 weeks! I don't mountain bike but I do hike, camp, fish, hunt, and in general enjoy good ol' outdoor fun.

I don't know what everyone else is thinking, but once we get closer to that time for room/place hunting - I'm after simple and cheap. I'm a young guy with no dependents and will be looking for a 3 bed/2 bath place within walking distance. Snagging something as previously mentioned for $600-700 dollars equates to a nice cheap ~$200/month rent if two others take a room. So have it be known, *standing on a milk crate* I am searching for two roommates who want to live cheap!
 
I used to race road bikes in europe and still ride some. If there's some good mountain biking/trails around I'm into it.

I'm in a pretty similar boat. I'm 23 male, no dependents, and want to live in 2 or 3 bedroom place where I can walk to school. I think in Feb. they will send us some info on housing and we will be able to log into the website to maye find places together.
 
So when does everyone anticipate that they'll be looking for a place and possibly even signing?? Similar to you, Goodrain, I've been obsessing about searching for places in and around Des Moines online. Nevertheless, I know there are many places not listed online, and I'll have to do a lot of searching by foot and through word of mouth. I'd definitely say that finding a place to live next year is the one thing I'm obsessing about the most right now. My girlfriend (fiance?) will be coming with me, so she'll be my roommate of sorts...otherwise I'd for sure live with another student(s). By the way, I'm a 23 y/o dude (in case you couldn't figure the male part out, I decided to go ahead and let ya know).

On a side note, I love the outdoors. Gray's Lake looked awesome, so I'm really looking forward to spending an occasional bit of free time out there.
 
Also, how bada$$ is it that we're completely dominating the Class of 2010 boards. The only one close is LECOM, so let's make an attempt to continue to dominate and possibly even kick them when they're down. 148 posts and counting.....

Wow, that's pretty cool. I have never done any road biking but would love to eventually get a road bike. I heard there is a ride that they do every year from one side of Iowa to the other. Here is the website "The registers annual great bicycle ride across Iowa".

Greetings All....Yes, I am fired up about the educational opportunitites at DMU, BUT I am glad to hear some off-topic chatter. It sounds like there is a good group of work hard/play hard peeps in the DMU Crew. I have taken a few tours through the DM area and I am excited about the possibilities of non-skool activity. Saylorville Lake ~15 min north of campus with lots of camping, boating, MB trails, etc. The lake/pond/river in DM just south of campus looks good for beach Vball, picnics, running. A buddy of mine worked of the I-Cubs and said it was good time....living in MN, I gotta love a chance for outdoor baseball. The DT DM Bar scene has good possibilities , I am looking for recommendations of good local eats in DM beyond Applebee's or OCB. The new Well's Fargo Center seems to be a good sized venue to get a concert or 2 (Omaha, Chi and Mpls are not too far).

There was a note about Ragbrai....all I hear is good things. I know of an established group that does it every year. I should clearify that it is more like a Drinking Team with a Bike Riding Problem.

On the housing situation.....I too am looking to find a location near campus, 2-3 other guys/girls looking to work hard/play hard.
