Whoa, Tenacious DO,

I think that we were interview buddies. Did you interview on October 20th? There was a hodgepodge of people that day, including like 4 or 5 people from Minnesota and then a pair of girls who went to high school together. I'm one of those hs reunion girls, perhaps the more hyper of the two, or rather the really petite one with the darker hair. Anywho, big congrats!

Correct you are....Thanx for the 411 on the DM scene...It is good to hear from a local. Are you going to be done with your Grad Degree prior to med skool or can you finish it during? Good Luck :luck: . See you this summer 😉

Hey now, calling a Northern Illinoisan an Iowa local may lead to a rumble on the playground. Actually, I do like IA, but you won't see me driving with those clouds plates 😛. So yes, I will have a little over half of my MPH done before school starts and the rest I can work on during med school. I'm even considering adding the MHA since I'm already taking some of those courses and enjoying them.

Well, you may also get your wish and get to party with Mr. Crazy Delicious himself (aka my honey). Just be generous with the Mr. Pibb and Red Vines! Sounds like good times ahead. 😀 Take care!

I can only get #3 to work as well.

Hope everyone had a great holiday. It's great to check back in to the site and see so many classmates here!

I was proud of the utes! I didn't think they could pull that upset off. They are going to be a force next season! I don't think BJ will be back. The cougs..... I have hope for next year. They can't win a close game. Oh well.

Wow, a fellow Ute?
Oh you know it baby!!! How's it going? Headed to DMU? Nice. 👍
(Graduated, now just working at Primary Children's Hospital...good times)

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question, but obviously not enough to restrain myself. I'm asking fellow DMUers, because I won't get as much flak, if it is a stupid question. Enough beating around the bush.

I've always kind of assumed that physicians have really good health insurance. Is this a false assumption? Dependant on many variables? What kind of health insurance do most physicians have? I'm just really curious about it, and I never really hear anyone talk about it.

Thanks in advance.

I think it depends on where you work. If you work for a hospital or big practice group, you'll probably get pretty cheap rates. If you work for a small clinic, you'll probably get stuck paying a lot of money for your insurance -- the same goes if you're self-employed. I think you'll definitely make enough to be well-insured; it's just going to be expensive. My brother works for a small clinic and pays $800 a month to insure his family. I would guess if you worked for say Kaiser, they'd pay most of your insurance. So, yeah, it depends.

Not a dumb question at all. Insurance is the big disadvantage for being self-employed or working for a small employer. Physician groups probably have older employees, too, which makes the rates higher.

Hopefully, rates will stop increasing so much, though, because it is getting to unmanageable levels for lots of us. My insurance is still cheap, but it's at least tripled in the three years I've been at my company.

My dad is a physician, and we never really had good insurance. I think it all depends as Exlawgirl mentioned.

OK, long story short...I'm rock'in the short-term disability after shlder surgery(WC)...it is getting better, but no High-5's yet...Anywho, I am making a effort to fight boredom...I already have ~5 trips tentatively planned....I just need to fill the day-2-day hours.

Any Rec's on movies of any genre...I've got time and unlimited rentals at BB. Heck, if you are even wondering about a movie, let me know, I'll watch it an give you a 👍 👎 .

My interest are between:  to :meanie: to :scared: to  to 😕 to 😎 , I even like the occasional :barf:

...even better, help me answer the following: If I had ~4-6 weeks (with a bumb shlder), I would......

Just don't get filmed painting your roof or anything like that. 😱 You could always call your short term claims handler and hassle her all the time because you're bored -- I swear that some of my claimants do that. 🙂

Umm, no good movies. Well, we rented Elf and that was cute and stupid. I'm guessing the medication you're on would make everything funny. 😉

Tenacious DO,

How update are you on movies these days? Have you seen all the new releases in the past few months? Or are you in need of off beat films?

I'm a fan of WWII movies... "Downfall" was pretty good (last week of Hitler's life). "Saints and Soldiers" was awesome despite being a low budget film. If you haven't seen the "Band of Brothers" series it's well worth the 12 hour investment.

For comedy I liked Rushmore, Life Aquatic, I heart Hukabees, waiting for guffman, best in show, raising arizona.... I'll think of more.

Cinderella man was great. Winged Migration is a random bird documentary that I found myself intrigued by this break.

To kill lots of time, check out the 24 series or rent House MD.

I'll try to think of some other stuff.

I've seen most new releases by Tuesday afternoons....the more off beat the better (no subtitles)....call me a hayseed, but I must admit that I'm not big on reading during a movie.

All recommendations welcome....Thanx

Scratch "downfall." It's in german.

It sounds like you've seen quite a few movies, so it might be difficult to come up with some originals off-hand. Nevertheless, I'll offer out some suggestions. I have to recommend giving subtitled movies a chance, however. I'm not sure how many subtitled films you've seen, but I"ll only recommend those which I thought were incredible.

- Hate (subtitled): a must see and you won't regret watching it.
- City of God (subtitled): in case you haven't seen it.
- Kevin Smith movies based on his View Askew universe (primarily Chasing Amy and Dogma): YOu've probably seen all of these, but if not, give them a try.
- Better Luck Tomorrow
- My Sassy Girl (Korean, subtitled): I can't vouch for this one, but I've been meaning to see it, and a friend informed me it was incredible. Hence the reason U.S. filmmakers are now making an Americanized version, which is very much unfortunate.

Hell, I don't know. I don't want to spend too much time trying to think of movies off the top of my head, and i'm guessing you've seen half the movies I recommended. In case you haven't seen it yet, Go see Munich. Fantastic movie with a fantastic performance by Eric Bana, which was kind of surprising to me.

Do rent Hate though, and especially City of God ( if you haven't seen it).

Wow. A shoulder injury and he still manages to gracefully handle a keyboard and mouse. Ok, movies. I really wish I still had my queue at NetFlix.

IThe latest releases guaranteed to make you laugh would be 40 year-old Virgin and Wedding Crashers and then I would also throw in some Dodgeball. If you're in the mood for a good kiddie movie, Madagascar would be a good cute laugh and March of the Penguins is a beautiful and surprisingly funny documentary. (I have a thing for penguins if you can't tell.) I would also recommend Sin City and Batman Begins for a good dose of action. As for anime, Spirited Away is a great whimsical adventure. And finally drama, I really enjoy foreign films, especially Latin American ones, so a few that I would definitely recommend are Motorcycle Diaries, Tu mama tambien, and Maria Full of Grace.

These were all hits for me. Best of luck and hope you feel better soon!

Yeah, ignore the past re-post. But I just looked at some of the other posts and noticed that a lot of us like the same movies. I was surprised to see others mention Winged Migration and City of God, both of which were great movies. Along those independent movie lines, I would also recommend Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, and Lost in Translation. I have to check out some of these other foreign films that you guys have recommended. I've been meaning to watch I heart huckabees and Layer Cake. One great thing to know is that the Fleur Theater in Des Moines plays a lot of these great foreign and independent films.

Ok, my boyfriend is haggling me to put down one that he swears you won't regret. Boondock Saints. I also thought of another hilarious movie with great English humor, Shaun of the Dead. Ok, I could go on for days about movies, so I'm stopping here.

I shall be there too

Good stuff team...I'm off to BB, I'll let you know...I'll add few of my random favorites: Jesus' Son, Go, American Movie, Prince of Darkness, SLC Punk.

Late

By the way, the name of that small, independent movie house in DSM that I mentioned earlier is actually Fleur Cinema and Cafe. They also have a website if you're interested: http://www.fleurcinema.com/

Shaun of the Dead is absolutely hilarious. Good stuff. Many other good movies listed there, Megustamaiz. Garden State is also fantastic.

Thanks, ItsElectric. You had some nice choices yourself too. I'm really interested in checking out that My Sassy Girl movie that you said others were raving about. IMDB seems to agree too. I'm curious about the Hate movie that you recommended though. What language was it filmed in? There are at least a handful of other movies by the same name.

Ok, I'm off to see the Producers at the Fleur tonight, which looks ridiculously hilarious. Oh another Fleur note: I forgot to mention that you can actually have wine or a beer there! Yay! 🙄

The movie hate is originally in French, I believe. The French title is "La Haine" (1995). You just sold me this Fleur cinema. Beer, wine??? Wow, I can't imagine seeing a movie anywhere else from here on out.

I'm a strong believer that beer should be served at all social gatherings.

Well, I just fought the Crock Pot gods, and well, they whooped me. One can of cream of broccoli, two diced carrots, some red beans, two small deer backstraps chunked, some water, some brown rice, some red bell peppers, and a bunch of curry powder on slow overnight. It didn't taste too good. So much for experimenting. 🙁

Tenacious,
Go on an africa theme and watch Yesterday, Sometimes in April, and Hotel Rhwanda.

Electric,
Yes, beer at gatherings is good.

I think it's about time all of you voyeur Class of 2010 DMUers finally post on this thread. I'll bet my left testicle that there is a steady stream of individuals on SDN who have committed to DMU, continually check and read this thread, but never post. So Post, dammit!

On a side note, if you haven't checked this website out, please do. http://thelonelyisland.com/

Many funny shorts and clips made by these guys (You might even recognize one of guys......mystery prize to the first person who knows what guy I'm talking about). One of my personal favorites on the website is the "Bing Bong Brothers". I caution that some of the clips are NOT SAFE FOR WORK (unless you're like me and never have a boss around you).

Well, I've posted before but still feel a bit like a voyeur so...I'm an older married student with relatively new born twin boys. We plan on moving in july and maybe buying a house. We're from the san francisco area in california. We've visited des moines and liked it a good bit, and for that matter a good bit more than we thought we would. I loved the school, and the emphasis on OMM. Also a big fan of garden state, and scrubs for that matter. If i had to choose between scrubs er and house, though I watch them all when I have time, scrubs is my speed. On the movie front Anchor Man is huge. Me and some friends did up hallow's eve as the channel 4 news team. I interviewed in Portland and actually switched my date from sunday to saturday so i could have a fun halloween-it's my wife's favorite holiday. I had gotten into schools last year but when my wife got pregnant with twin I decided to defer at some places and simply re-interview at other places so that I could be a stay at home dad this year and spend as much time with my family as possible before starting school. I too like some nice beer, but also am a fan of whiskey. I lived in europe racing bikes for a season and that was super cool. I haven't been in school for a while but I bought the netter's anatomy flash cards and am making my way through them each day i can make it to the gym for cardio. I was an anatomy TA in college so most of it is coming back pretty quick. I'm excited and nervous to start up again, and am looking forward to meeting my new classmates.

I want to introduce myself to my fellow classmates. I'm from the Monterey Peninsula in California, which is 120 miles south of San Francisco on the coast. I have been working as an EMT for the past year. For the next six months I plan on working, training for a 1/2 ironman and pursuing all those avocations that I won't be able to next year.

In my netflix queue right now I have: Old Boy(I recommend this one), 12 monkeys, Dr. Strangelove, The Game, and Miracle.

There is a network of bike trails around Des Moines that I will be taking advantage of while the weather allows.

Has anybody heard from DMU since you sent in the acceptance form and seat deposit? Any pre-enrollment info or something of the like?

which half iron man are you doing?
I did the vine man a few years back just to spice up my base miles after my college season had ended.

Greetings All, I greatly appreciate your movie recommendations….Unfortunately I live in a Yuppie-ville Suburb and the Blockbuster has a limited Foreign Film section. I just finished City of God – aka Boys in the Hood 2…Earlier I watched & appreciated Hotel Rwanda, It reminded me of my last Spring Break trip (All-Inclusive Hotel My A$$)...Yesterday I watched the Motorcycle Diaries which got me thinking more about leprosy and in the traveling mood….so I decided to take my temp-disability show on the road…Orbitz Multi-City flights are a very good deal….Mpls -> Denver - >Las Vegas -> Honolulu (Maybe Molokai 😱 ) -> San Fran ->Mpls…This should help get me out of the remaining winter in MN and prevent me from getting hooked on “Dancing/Skating/Lose Wt/Dating with the (Has Been) Stars".

Some of the other films I have recently enjoyed: Crash, National Treasure (N. Cage + Disney Films = Actually a good adventure), March of the Penguins, Batman Returns, W.C., King Kong, The Football Factory, The Office marathon on BBC, High Tension

Some films I could have done without: Bad News Bears, Friday Night Lights, Harold and Kumar, there were a few more forgettable films but that might have been during my Vicodin Phase.

Hope all is well on your side.

TD

Howdy all,

I've not heard a thing from DMU since I got accepted and sent my first deposit. I'll check with a friend, who's a second year at DMU, about when to expect something.

BTW, I might as well introduce myself. I'm male, 37, married, and have a 12 year old son and an 10 year old daughter. I own a house about 12 miles east of Des Moines and have lived around the metro my whole life. I'm still finishing up my bachelors at Iowa State University and should graduate during the summer sometime.

If anybody needs any local info or whatnot, just lemme know and I'll try to help out.

I saw Old Boy last March while I visited my brother in Australia great kung fu movie, but crazy storyline. The theater I saw the movie in was had about six screening room that could only hold 30 to 40 people. Some the seats were loveseats. If you ever have the chance go to Australia. They have a decent movie scene. Checkout TWO HANDS

When I spoke with admissions a few weeks ago, they told me that the next thing we'd receive in the mail wouldn't come until Spring time. So, March maybe? Either way, I wouldn't expect anything for the next 2 months or so. Does anybody know when computers are issued to us?? I'm assuming not until August, but I was curious since my 4 1/2 year old computer is slowly wasting away.

Great to hear from some other fellow classmates! Keep 'em coming. I find myself looking forward to next year, but I really should remember to just enjoy one day at a time.

Did you all get the link from DMU today? I was pretty excited when I received it. I am very excited to meet all my new classmates. I thought it was nice of DMU to send pictures of the incoming/present class. If you are wondering, I am the one on the red couch 😎 ....If you have not received the link I have attached below:

Ok, how do you even follow up on a conversation after that? I couldn't get those images out of my head for days. Well, it's snowing for the first time since December 8th here is DSM. I'm just hoping that there's some snow in Colorado when I'm skiing in Vail next week. 😛 🙂 Any mountain skiiers out there? This is going to be my first time skiing in the mountains and my boyfriend and the people that I'm going with are threatening to...no...they're dragging me to the china bowls. Joy. Any advice for the novice skiier?
