I graduated last May, so I'm currently paying off my undergraduate debt. My question is do I have to notify the government that I will be a full-time student again next Fall so that my current loans will be deferred once again, or will it just automatically happen? Does anyone know the process to this?

Thanks for any help.

I believe you will have to fill out a paper for deferment. But I would talk to the financial aid people about that.

Has anybody seen the 2006 match list by any chance? I've been looking for it on various forums and haven't found it. If anyone has it, I'd really appreciate it if I could see it.

Thanks.

I was looking at apartments in Des Moines this past weekend, and I just wanted to see if anyone else on this thread had any good or bad information regarding Timberland Pointe. They fit my price range for a 2 BR, and they're pretty big. Thanks for any information!

I will be leaving for rotations in July and would like to sell my townhome. It is in the gated community of Glen Oaks in West Des Moines (about 10 minutes from school). If you're single make some extra cash...I rent the second bedroom to a 1st year for $600/month. I'll even throw in my old notes 🙂

General info-
$138,000
2Br/2.5Ba
1 car garage
gas fireplace
appliances included
furnished/partially furnished is a possibility...

For more info or pictures please email [email protected]

Since no one has any info on Timberland Pointe, how about anything on Park Avenue, besides what it says on apartmentfinder.com?? I hope everyone is having some luck finding a place to live next year!

Just got the news that we are definately getting the new gateway convertible laptops next year. Booyah. 😀 No word yet on pre-delivery upgrades tho.

Hey everybody,
been out for a while with knee surgery now it's time to get things going. I've been going through a Des Moines area apartment guide and am a little confused. I'm married with 1 kid and one on the way (November), so that gives us 4 people total. With all of our crap we need no less than a 3 bedroom apt. or rental house. I have lots of ideas but what areas are good/safe for families? Don't want to throw my wife and kids in the middle of the ghetto  . Any ideas? It would be nice to live close to DMU so I could sell a car and walk/bike to school but willing to do whatever it takes. My wife and I are flying back to Des Moines in June to go apt. hunting and hope to settle on a place by then. Any advice? Damn, I'm getting excited. Thanks for the info about the new laptop. I'm starting to quiver!!

BTW, where you at JANITOR?????????? I'm callin you out! 😀

Bone, just buy that guys townhome, it'll cost as much as rent. The homes we've been looking at in AZ are around 270K, ouch, yeah it hurts.

Shoot, I don't think we have a ghetto here! The closest you'll come to that is north of University Ave from about 5th St W. on to the west for a bit. I think things look better over there by the time you get close to Drake University around 30somethingth. 😳

There are some low income subsidized apartment complexes over by Methodist/Blank Hospital that are sort of like an extremely mini version of the "projects" but other than that, if a neighborhood looks well kept I wouldn't worry about crime. It's darn low here in general.

I think those are over past AIB College on Fleur Drive toward the Wakonda Club. It's really like an apartment complex village over there no? My personal experience with apartments on that block is dated now by 19 (dang!) years or so, Sorry. It's a nice area in general but none of my friends had any specific info about Timberland.

Has anyone received their award letter, or at least know about when we will be receiving them??

Awesome news about the computers, by the way!

I haven't received anything, but would like to know when we will receive it. Plus just to make sure that I've done everything. Maybe I'll give the FA office a little call make sure I don't have anything else to do. Looks like we are going to be living in the Ankeny area, at the moment. Going back to look some more next weekend. Getting to be exciting for sure.

Does anyone know anything about the DMU health insurance plan? or any other good plans? My wife and I are both graduating and will not have any coverage starting May 1st. Any ideas on what we should do?

I assume your wife won't at least have a job right away, or be attending graduate school. Otherwise, look into getting on her plan. I guess I'm actually just stating the obvious....oh well. I guess it all just depends on what she plans on doing. Hopefully everything works out for the best.

misparas,

Insurance--well...The school plan is pretty darn good for you as a student. However, the plus one plan is ridiculously expensive. Here's what I did...I first signed up for the single plan while my wife had a month by month plan (really cheap b/c it was the catastrophe plan) until she found a job. When she got a teaching job it came w/ a ridiculously cheap plan b/c Iowa's teachers get paid peanuts. Your wife getting a job is considered a major life change and therefore DMU will pro-rate the plan you had and REFUND you the money you had taken out of your loans for this.

PM me if you have any more specific questions.

I thought the family play was about 5K a year? I believe that is what the portal information said. That's not too bad considering, but it is quite a chunk none the less. We are pretty much budgeting that we will be on the DMU family plan.

Greetings All, I have been out of the loop....but still here in Spirit.....My $.02 on the Health Insurance.....You may want to look into Temporary Medical Insurance for the summer just to cover emergencies til the DMU plan starts. I did it for ~6 months in between job affiliated insurance....it was cheap as $^&@, with a tolerable deductible ($600)....I think you can only be on temp insurance for 6 months depending on the plan.....so that might buy you some time.

As most of you, I am looking into the housing thing for this summer/fall. I am selling my place in St Paul and looking to buy in DM....I hope to post a "Roommate(s) Wanted" on the DMU Portal soon....So, if there is anyone looking for a non-apartment rental, let me know.....Who wants to listen to their upstairs neighbor practice their clogging all night (No offense to any cloggers, you can really kick out the Jams :horns: )

Tenacious OUT

Thanks for the feedback! I'm guessing we can't get DMU insurance until this fall... so I'll probably have to get the temporary stuff this summer. My wife is going to be looking for a job, so we'll see what coverage she ends up with.

I got the orientation schedual today. It's posted on the portal if you haven't seen it. I'm excited! It'll be fun to get the whole DMU crew to a cubs game the first night.

Hey paras,
I'm with you bro. However we have one child and ONE on the way (due Nov)! So we are going to cobra my insurance after I quit in August (through my work at Primary Children's Hospital) so the birth is covered then we are all going to get on DMU's plan. Please kill me. I've heard some students take the school insurance while their family (wife and kids) depend on the government for their health care. Has anyone heard of this before?

Yes. We did this while in PA school for a short time. However my wife doesn't wish to do it during medical school, so we are just going to go with the DMU family plan apparently.

👍

I've heard of people getting government health care as well. How does that work?

JBone - good to see you back. Healing up nice?

I just took a look at the schedule for orientation and I'm so stoked. Anytime I hear any news about next year I get so excited. Also, the laptops should be sweet if they are the gateway convertibles.

Anyways, I've been thinking a lot about my living situation for next year. i haven't decided if I want to live alone or with a roomate or 2. I do know that I want to live within walking distance to school and I don't care how nice it is. So, I'm gonna post some info about myself to see if I could possibly get lucky and find a roomate here.
I am 23 year old male. I enjoy sports, both playing and watching, lifting weights and listening to music. I'm not a party animal, but definitely will be looking to have a drink or hit the bars whan time permits. I do most of my studying at school, so noise is not a real big issue for me, and besides i am always listening to my Ipod. I have grown up in San Diego for basically my whole life and have a pretty laid back attitude in general, I am expecting quite a culture shock. I have always been a people person and never really had a prolem getting to know people, as well as getting along with others.
Let me know if anyone is possibly interested??? maybe post some info on here or PM me. if nothing else, maybe we can talk more about where people will be living.

Hello! I've been trying to ween myself from posting since this darn site sucked me in, but this bit of information IMO was too good to hold back regarding the loans...

"You have no award yet because we have not certified any incoming DO students. Once your loans are certified you will receive a notice of an award letter and your loans will be listed in the summary on the portal. It looks like we have all your paperwork for your loans. However, we will not be certifying loans for incoming students until late June or early July. This is because we are currently working on processing loans for students who start in May and June. Once those are complete, we will start working on the incoming class. I hope this helps! Have a good day!"

...so now I have again posted.

Thanks for the info Redneck! It's at least nice to hear when we should expect to receive an award letter. It currently shows me receiving $0 in financial assistance on the Portal. It does seem kind of strange that we won't know until June/July, especially considering I have numerous friends who already know exactly how much they're receiving. Hmmm.....interesting.

Whoa, I have been so busy that I haven't even visited StudentDoc for the past...errrmm..month or so. I just get wrapped up in the forums on the portal. I just stopped in to see if anyone has heard about FA yet...I did file all the paperwork (MPN, etc.) but I guess we aren't going to hear for awhile. Thanks for the information Redneck!

Newsflash! I just got my lease faxed to me today....I am poor and have cats and a roommate, so we got one of the cheapest and closest places we could find. They said that 80% of the apartment residents were from DMU...Yay Imperial! I hope I can handle at least a year there!?!? 🙄

I see the button for the forums in the upper right hand corner on the portal, but what username and password do i use for it? Sometimes this thing is so confusing. Is it just your initial login information that was sent to us, or do we have to set something else up.

Use the password that you use to log on. It doesn't work for blackboard (at least for me) but it will work for the forum.

Wow, I haven't posted in forever. Ok, here's the big LD for all you incoming fishes:

Health insurance:
You're health insurance does not go into effect until classes are in session. Until then, if you are quiting a job where you have previously had insurance, you will get a Cobra insurance option via snailmail automatically. If you are coming from undergrad and will no longer be on your parents policy, you can also apply for Cobra. The school's policy is through Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield. If you opt out of this a good individual policy is offered by State Farm. I would recommend not getting the dental insurance, b/c I found it was a waste of money.

Living in DSM:
I'm going to give you one broad area to STAY AWAY from when looking for a place to live. So break out your maps. Anything east of Fleur Drive, anything North of I-235 and East of 42nd street (these go together). Do not live near Drake University. Live as close to campus as possible. Many/most students live in apartments across the street from school. There are also quite a few that live in West Des Moines and Urbandale. I personally rent right now from Olde English Village. I HATE THIS PLACE! There is no insulation in the walls or ceilings so you hear everything - including sneezing, talking, coughing, and all the nasty stuff too. There are other apartment complexes in my neighborhood that are nicer - Regency Woods, Colonial Village. I just recently bought a townhouse in Valley Junction, and there are several others that are still available. So whoever it was that had the wife, kid, and baby on the way, this is a MUCH better option than renting. Trust me. And if you think you can't buy, try FHA loans, you usually only need 3% down.

Orientation:
The week of orientation will be fun and busy. There usually is breakfast for some mornings. For the first couple of days we all wore business casual and then it got more casual as the week went on. You will get tons of info. We got our laptops at the end of the week. DO NOT BUY ANY TEXTBOOKS! I don't care how excited and ansey you get, don't buy any yet. During orientation you will find out who your assigned 2nd year Big Bro/Sis is and they will tell you what to buy for, and may have their old books for you to buy at a cheaper price. At the end of the week, if it's anything like last year, there will be a picinic for all the students, and you can bring your s.o. too. We had a band play last year, and there were door prizes. Very cool stuff.

General:
I subscribe to Notepool, which is awesome and definitely worth. I bought the old test packet but never use it. If you work at a healthcare place now and are in access of a box of Nitrle gloves, get one. You will need these for anatomy lab, oh and a long lab coat. Keep up with the notes and don't fall behind. If you feel like you're doomed by the middle of the 1st semester, relax, everyone gets this feeling. You may just need to change your studying pattern. If you think, omg this is so hard, yes it is, but yes it can be done. Invest in 2-3" 3 ring binders. I already have 6 filled with notes, handouts, notecards, etc. Make sure you have a life that's separate from school to keep you sane. Go out with friends, workout, explore different hobbies, party it up, schedule time to watch a TV show regularly, or just sit on the couch and do nothing. These are things that you won't be doing a lot of once you get really involved in studying. When we have Club Day, don't over-do yourself by volunteering for every single club. Pick the ones that you think will interest you the most. There will be plenty of opportunites to volunteer throughout the year. Just don't string yourself too thin.

Hmmm, I think that's all I have for right now. If you have any questions/comments send me a PM. These are all my opinions and experiences so you will of course hear differently from others. Oh and by the way, once you're in school, and if you're anything like me, you will hardly have any time for SDN anymore. So try to get out and live it up now before school starts. See you guys in 3 months!

Holy smokes the health insurance for a family looks like it went up quite significantly. Essentially 9K for decent deductable and that's just medical, doesn't include dentist. Oh well, got to have it, just makes things more interesting for sure.

That's what I'm talkin bout. We'll just have to walk around together so we don't feel too uncomfortable if everyone else is dressed up.
And thanks for all the info!

Great stuff! Thanks.
(Copy, paste, and print) 😉
Freakin me out though, I don't want to get owned in med school. 🙁

Hey, my buddy and I got an apartment in Country Club Village, ever heard of it?

Country Club Village is across the street from me. They are the older brand apts, but they were remodeled inside. I don't know anything else about them, but they do have townhomes available if you don't want anyone above or below you, which is what sucks in my case.

Any other questions, just PM me.

Lates!

My wife and I were up in Des Moines over Easter weekend checking out where we are going to live and stuff like that. I am so excited to move up there and to meet everyone. We are planning on moving either the weekend of July 15th or July 22nd. It is even more exciting now that we have the orientation schedule! When is everyone else looking to move? Well, let's enjoy the next few months as much as possible.

Oh yah I almost forgot. The week b4 orientation there should be some activites for everyone to do, if you are here and want to meet some people b4 hand. Then during orientation there will be social events as well. We will be 2 weeks into Pharm by then, but we still like to take you guys out! 🙂

My buddy and I will be down on the 24th of July. Not sure if we will stay long or not. I have a few things to get settled back here in PA in early August.

Helped out a lot, thanks. As for the above and below, I am an RA, been living with freshmen for four freaking years so I am used to all that crap. We were thinking about a townhouse but didn't know how much we would spend the first year/ect.

I went to a bar when I was there, it was an Irish pub, I forget the name, but they had a 2 for one deal, I almost had an orgasim. Random but, it happened ahaha

We'll be moving out between the 15th and 22nd of July as well. We should all have some pre-orientation functions for sure. That would be a good time.

I probably get there about August 2 or so. But, I still have no idea where I'm going to live or with who. I'm thinking of maybe coming out in June sometime to check out apartments. Does anyone think that this is neceassary or can I just figure out everything from here???
Anyone need a roomate yet??? I fso, check my post from last week 😀

Is DMU freakin serious about the $9,000 for family health insurance???
WTF????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? 😡
Why would someone pay those prices? $750/month? .
Are there other alternatives? Moochin' off of the government? Sorry, but I just read that part. They really hurt you if you have a family. Ouch.

Anyway, I think my wife and I will fly back this June to check out apts. etc. Any cheaper alternatives than flying to Des Moines? Omaha, etc? It is so expensive comming from SLC. Thanks everyone. Starting to quiver!

We drove in from PA, cost about 180 in gas for the whole trip and about 60 a person in food + 120 for a double room. Still cheaper than a flight. June should be fine since most places will only hold a room for a month tops. 9 grand for family insurance? Geez, but I don't think you have to take their insurance if you don't want it.

Jammers - I was an RA as well, but this isn't college. Any noise will affect you, b/c you will be studying for most of the time you are awake for the next 2 years. Country Club Village has townhouses. If you're worried about money here's my sit...I rent by myself $500+/mo, car payment $260/mo, cc bills out the #$*, and I still had money for a down payment on a th. You'll make money later to pay back what you spend now. Otherwise, I would see about living across the street at Imperial or 3000 Grand, etc. It's cheap. You probably went to Mickey's Irish Pub. There's another place that has 50cent longnecks on Thursdays.

FS-Pro - I picked my apt from an Apt website source. I would fly here.

jbone - Omaha is randomly cheaper, but it's about 1 hr 45 mins away. So then you have to rent a car. I would just fly into Des Moines and save the hassle, b/c it really doesn't turn out to be that much cheaper. And it's expensive to fly here from anywhere, except Vegas. 🙂

Try www.studentuniverse.com - but only counts if you're a current student. There's another one too, but I can't think of what it is right now.

I agree with you on the family insurance. My wife and I are still kidless so I think we will be using whichever plan they offer where she works (she's an RN, so one of the local hospitals). We flew in to Omaha when we visited over Easter weekend, it was quite a bit cheaper, but worked out better for our schedules. The drive was about 1 hr 45 min, not too bad. We are flying out the first weekend of June, and going directly to Des Moines because it is about the same price as flying to Omaha. I have checked random dates of flights from SLC to Des Moines and Omaha (my family lives in SLC), and it is hit and miss which one is cheaper. When in June are you planning on going?

Thanks! We are going to try the first week of June or the third. I work 7on/7off so I have to work around it. Thanks for the help. 👍

That would be kind of a cool schedule. I think I read in one of your posts that you work at PCMC in the lab as a med tech? I used to work at LDS hospital in the lab.
