I'm going with U.S. Bank for my checking and using an online high yield savings account such as ING. I would reccomend other people checking this out if you're planning on having a Savings account. Don't waste your time with an account that gives you roughly .25%, online banks such as ING, emigrant direct, HSBC, and others offer around 4% return.

Just thought I'd pass on some friendly advice.

Thanks for the info. We will probably do the same. How does ING work? Can you transfer to and from your checking with no fee or penalty?? the 4.25% is a pretty sweet deal. We are also looking into short term CDs.
 
You'll have your ING savings account directly linked to a checking account of your choice via the internet, and ING will not charge you a dime to transfer money back and forth. You just need to ensure that the bank you use for checking doesn't make any charges for such transfers.

4.25% is definitely a pretty sweet deal for a savings account. Obviously, if I had the resources to, I'd invest in a slightly more diversified portfolio (mutual funds/stocks/etc.), but I don't, so I'm happy to have a solid savings account that will provide me with a bit of extra cash.
 
We, my wife and I, had the first and most outlandish, i hope, of our going away parties and I've been recovering ever since. I've been going to bed between 9-10 since the twins came home, and for various months lacking a good bit of sleep. So a wild night out in SF has taken a much bigger toll on me than I remember, but oh so fun. Great dinner and then a dive bar with dancing. All of us are getting ready to move in a couple weeks. Crazy. And then oh yeah, start school. I was taking a nap today and had my first oh my god am I ready for this thought. :luck:

My wife and I have Wells Fargo, there's a Dahl's a block from campus with a Wells Fargo ATM as well as a Wells Fargo Branch office 3 blocks from campus.

On the otherhand, there is also a US Bank branch office a block from campus. No matter which you choose you won't be far from a bank.

As far as loan money, you can get the money direct deposited to any bank account, so you don't need to switch if you don't mind paying $3+ in fees anytime you want cash.



1 more week of classes and exams then I'm officially a 3rd year with 2 full months off for summer before rotations start!


My advice to all of you if you care is enjoy this time off and don't think about studying or school until you get here. Your 1st semester will hit you fast and furious enough without you worrying about it all summer.

Hang out with your friends and family and just relax! You've gotten into Med school which is more than 75%+ of all freshman pre-med students will ever get to say, so congratulate yourself by having a fun summer!

I would buy a candy bar at a store with the debit card for 50cents or so and get 40 bucks back or whatever was needed. Nothing like treating yourself to a candy bar every time you hit the 'atm'. LOL, I was hooked once the chocolate hit my lips. No three dollar fees necessary.

So what's the coolest thing you guys have done this summer or will do?

Coolest thing I'll do is kiss your girlfriend when her and her friends stay at our place. Sorry, even I realized this was kind of brutal after I typed it out.

Hmmm...when are we supposed to meet our big bro/big sis by the way? I didn't see it on our orientation schedule. All I saw was something about lunch with second years, but then again there was also something about a class meeting. Also, are there enough of them to match all of us, or does one big get assigned more than one first year?

In terms of summer excitement, I'm stuck in classes, but another highlight of my summer will be a trip to Las Vegas on July 13th. It's mostly for pleasure and partly for a mini bachelor/bachelorette party for my bro and his fiance. We're going to play a live-stage version of "The Price is Right!" and maybe see "O" or Chippendales and go to Studio54. Before that, I'll be headed back home to Chicago, where I plan to engorge myself at the Taste and check out the Tut exhibit at the Field Museum as well as spend time with family.

hey everyone, i'm new to the forum and will be starting with you all this fall. it's pretty sweet that you've all be talking since the fall. i'm from iowa and will be moving to dsm in mid july. pretty pumped for it all! i just graduated from undergrad and am ready to jump back in. i played on the tennis team in school and love to play all other sports. i've also actively played cello since elementary school. my latest obsession has been the series of "the office" by bbc. it's hilarious, you should all check it out. take it easy and see you all soon!

My wife and I LOVE the office, but we have only been watching the one on NBC. We will have to check out the british version.

I guess that I was awarded a grand total of zero for this fall......Looks like I will be having to settle for the cheapo noodles and cheese....See you at the soap kitchen.
 
I was also doing some googling earlier today, and I came across this website. I don't know if other people already know about it, or whatever else, but I thought I'd put it out there. It's more for JBONE and others like him in similar situations, but it basically helps you to determine what forms of government aid you are eligible for.

Hmmm.....well maybe I'm the only one getting money. I could possibly spare a few bucks, if you like. And just a quick bit of advice, I'd recommend checking out the soup kitchen before you settled for the soap kitchen 😛 . Not nearly as filling.

Have fun in Vegas! Me, my mom and a friend went to Chippendales and had a blast. It's just more funny than anything. I heard "O" was really good but expensive. I really like the Blue Man Group. It's REALLY entertaining. Have fun!

As for myself, I'm off to Europe on the 9th for 16 days. I'm going to see a friend in Denmark for a week and then go to Paris, Venice, Rome, and hopefully Capris. I'll be traveling with my mom and grandma....if you know any of us, that's pretty scary. I've been saving up for a long time so it will be nice to have this break. I'm only home (actually I'm homeless when I get back) for a few days and then I'm heading to school!

so I have Wells Fargo and I was thinking it might be easier to get a grad plus loan through them because I could see it online every time I check my account (which actually might be depressing). Anyone know if I can do that? Otherwise, the T.H.E. loan sounds like the best choice.

OH yeah. I got my test results back today...I have immunity to MMR and varicella. YAY! Those are probably the only tests results that are good to be positive. 🙂

Lucky you! I am negative for varicella and mumps. Oh yea, and six shots later it was determined that I am a non-responder for HepB....

Sorry to be a downer, but the Tut exhibit is kind of brutal. Cairo wouldn't let a decent amount of stuff leave the country and some stuff is missing (like the famed gold mask). It's a nice thing to see, I was just kind of disappointed with some of the missing items.
 
I had to do the MMR booster due to two borderline.

Question for the current students lurking or posting... Our current budget is listed for $1,505 to cover books/handouts/copying according to this page http://www.dmu.edu/FA/Budgets/COMbudget.cfm What I'm wondering is how realistic is this number?
 
Well how exciting everyone's summer is sounding! You're definitely right when we (now 2nd years) say to not buy your books until you are here and find out what you can get from your big bro/sis. And usually you will either need to email your big bro/sis or they will email you in order for you to meet. The 2nd year luncheon is just some random 2nd years that volunteer for free lunch and take time to answer your questions you have while in orientation. It's a good Q&A session. Personally I will be in Vegas also that weekend and if anyone would like to take time away from their busy bachelorette parties, I will be at the Rio for the WSOP with my b/f so you are more than welcome to stop by and keep me company. Other than that, I want to do some sight seeing this time around and if anyone has any good tour guide companys to recommend, send me a PM. See you guys soon! I can't help to think I'll be back in 5 weeks! EEK!
 
Hurray for Vegas and boo for shots. I also have to go back and get another shot for HepB after completing the series 4 years ago, so I feel your pain, Schminger. On a bright note, I have immunity to varicella and I don't remember ever having it!

Unc31, thanks for the info about the Tut exhibit. I think that the last time it was at the Field was in the early 1990's and it wasn't even very exciting then. I remember going on a school field trip and getting really excited about buying scarabs at the gift shop. I went to see the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit one year and that was actually really interesting, because somebody was actually working on translations while we watched.

Kahoo99, weird but true is right! We might run into each other in Vegas and not even know it! But all the same have a wonderful trip and let me know if you decide to go to The Price is Right! at Bally's. I'm so ready for this vacation!

LuvGrand, I'm excited about Vegas too and Chippendale's. I see those signs all the time because we always stay at the Rio (my parents have been there 4 times this year, so we always get great deals!) I'm going to see it with my future sister-in-law at the urging of my mom. She won't go because it grosses her out that the guys are my brother's age. She said that she would go if they were her age. Now that grosses ME out. 🙂 We're pretty sad because we were supposed to see Celine Dion and she just happens to be taking a vacation at that time! Have a fantastic time in Europe though! 16 days is going to go by incredibly quickly, but it will be great! When you're in Paris, try to see if you can find one of those gyros with the french fries on top. They're so incredibly good!
 
I'll be in Vegas from June 30 - July 2 for a bachelor party, sounds like this is a common place for us future doctors to party.

Mine is not up yet, I'm still at $0 dollars as well. Nearly everyone qualifies for the stafford stuff, so I don't think everyone is done yet.
 
I am going to go with Wells Fargo--I have had USBank for the last seven years and I am just not a fan. It takes forever if you go into the bank and it seemed like I was always finding new fees on my bank statement. I don't know, just a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know anything about their loan programs though or about their saving accounts.

The ING accounts on line are awesome though--great way to make some real interest on your money.

As for me, this summer my boyfriend and I driving to Alaska...I know...it is going to be super long. We are only going to ketchikan, but it will still be a trek. It should be awesome though, because we are going to take a few days in Banff--which looks amazing.

I think a dinner sounds great, by the way--good idea!

(and officially starting to get freaked out about starting school)
 
Munchkin, Thanks for the info on the bigs. I'm looking forward to meeting mine. Small world that you're going to Vegas too at the exact time as me and Kahoo99! I didn't even realize that the WSOP was going to be at the Rio this year, but that's where I'll be staying too. I'm interested in what the pool is going to look like. There are always really pervy men there who wear dark sunglasses and think that you can't see what they're REALLY looking at.

I can't really give you advice on good tour companies, but I understand that Red Rocks Canyon is a nice place to hike. You may want to check the concierge for suggestions too. I can recommend a really good Chinese restaurant if you'd like. Sam Woo BBQ is fantastic for fried noodles and barbeque pork and roast duck, and it's located in that "chinablock." There's also a really good Vietnamese restaurant upstairs from there for noodles and Vietnamese eggrolls. That's a tip for eating cheap and good in Vegas. Do PM me if you're interested in meeting up though! We can make a game of dodging those swimsuit-clad people who try to rope you into going into that cheesy bubble club.

FS-Pro, sweet, have a great trip in Vegas! One thing though, I know that you're from SoCal, so along those same lines, does Pechanga have any meaning to you? I was just there in March.
 
It looks like my Stafford loan amount is now posted. I can't wait until payday!
So, is everyone going with the Grad loan plus as opposed to private? Also, which lenders is everyone looking at? I am leaning towards T.H.E. that was previously mentioned because of how they return the origination fee.

As far as a meet and greet dinner, I like the Saylorsville Lake BBQ idea. We are moving the weekend of July 15th, so anytime after that is great!

Yes, Penchanga is about 45 minutes north east from me, it is in Riverside County which is just north from San Diego. I've been there plenty of times for gambling and several times for the night club "Silk."

Boarderline for varicella and not only does my doctor not have it, none of the area hospitals, clinics or, even, the PA department of health can give it to me ahah. The health center said I can get it done there so I guess all is well.

I thought this link might help some people such as jbone and others in similar situations. It basically helps you to determine what sorts of government aid you are eligible for and steers you in their direction.

The lunch with 2nd years is the big sib lunch. Usually all or almost all of the 2nd years volunteer to be big sibs. I would say that 95% of your class will have a 1 on 1 big sib. If you don't get along with your big sib or whatever you will meet plenty of 2nd years through clubs and labs that you can find a "2nd big sib."


Definitely wait to buy books. I am on the Navy scholarship so I get reimbursed for all of my books so I bought all of the "required" books.

How many did I actually use? About 25% tops. Talk to your big sib before you buy any books, unless you're military in which case you might as well buy all of them.

1 minute if the traffic is bad, Imperial is directly across the street from campus.

Random insurance question for you all:
I am still young enough to be covered by my parents Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance (I am 22) and won't have to seek out insurance until I turn 25 in 2009. However, if I get married next year, do I have to get new insurance because of the name change? I know that is a random question, and I can't call BCBS because I am not the policy holder, so I have to wait until my father gets back from vacation, and I just don't know how long I can wait to find out if I can get married or not w/o insurance being affected.
 
I am young too, and I recently did some calling to find out if my folks insurance would cover me and one detail they revealed to me, in addition to the 25 cut off, is marriage will cut you off. I'm 95% certain this is true with my folks insurance, but with this type of news I would still follow up and find out. I'm a dependent on my folks and I was still able to discuss these matters with the company. I don't see why you couldn't either. Weird. Good luck.
 
Gotta agree. I think most all insurances (check with Blue Cross just to be sure) have a marriage cut-off, since you're no longer a dependent of your parents. Once you're married, you're essentially on your own. I know, it sucks.

I had to call to get my award. It was then up the next day. Full stafford for me as well indicated on the website just now. How much is tuition and everything again?
 
I called, they told me to contact the employer that holds the plan. My guess is that they will probably have the 25 OR marriage cut off. Sucks for me, b/c I would be putting off my wedding just for freakin’ insurance coverage…or….I would have to pay a big fat wad of cash for insurance. Lucky me that my fiancée’s insurance at UND School of Medicine is way cheaper than ours at DMU. I guess we will see.

I also called financial Aid b/c I wanted to fill out the Grad Plus MPN and it ask how much you need. They told me that I got some money….I probably get a bit less b/c I took out 10,000 in loans in undergrad so from the government for grad school I can only get a max of 179,000 vs. 189,000 b/c of the subsidized and unsubsidized loans I have used already. Yay. Now I am applying for the grad plus b/c I at least know how much to request.

I hope you all get some nice large chunks of $$ as well.

As far as the immunizations go, I made the big mistake of going to a family practice doc and paid almost $300 for a tetanus and first and second hep B. I just looked at the prices at the health department.....I would have only spent about $100. I went there for my Tb test...only $10...nice! SO to anyone who has been waiting for the last minute (I know you're out there), go to the health department!

Too bad you don't work at a hospital like I do and have them pay for my immunizations. :laugh:
In fact, they require them so I really don't have a choice.

I must make some serious memory cells, b/c my titers were way positive for immunity and I didn't need any boosters. Although, I was 6 years overdue on my tetanus so I ended up getting the tetanus and pertusis combo. Yay for that. I finally finished my Grad Plus thing (I was waiting to find out how much to request)! Now I just hope I get all of it.


PS: My fiancee wants to put off the marriage now, b/c he doesn't want to have to pay for insurance. Instead of 2007, we are now looking at 2010!!! Anyone have any experience changing names after graduation? Do you guys think it would be really hard to have to go back and have my name changed on my medical degree?? My mom (who is not a doctor, but is the medical nutrition therapy department head and diabetes department head) seems to think it is really difficult and a lot of work to have your name changed after you get your medical degree, because they have to go back and change your diploma, etc. Any thoughts?
 
I've also heard it's really difficult to change afterwards which is why so manu people do it right before graduation.
 
My understanding is diplomas don't change. You're stuck with what's issued. So if you want to be Ms. DORocksMySocks on your diploma what until after to do the paperwork/marriage (more paper work headaches with this route over your life). Or if you want your diploma to read Mrs. Fiance's name, marry and get it done before graduation. But then you risk having your diploma state his name if you were to seperate (which you won't). This is my understanding of how degrees and diplomas work. Jump in and correct me folks if I'm wrong...
