09er's or 08ers' etc.: What are some of the classes, in general, that you would GO to and what are some that you would NOT GO to? I know everyone is different and benefits from different teaching styles, etc., but I am just wondering which classes you all found most helpful to actually attend and which ones did nothing for you.

I'll just go straight down from what I remember:
IOM - every class, it's only a week long
Mandatory classes - OMM, Ethics
Biochemistry - I missed a few but I did horrible in this so I went to almost every class
Anatomy - Depended on the lecturer, so mostly self-study
Behavioral Med - I did try to make every class b/c the 2nd years told us that they blew this one off and did piss poor on it, so I made the effort to go
Radiology - every class, they show films during lecture and the class is only a week or so long, I would definitely NOT miss any of these
Cell Biology - I liked going to this class, they showed slides during lecture that were on the exam, so it was most helpful to attend all classes
Immunology - hardly went, I was a med tech in my past life so I've had this course quite a few times already in more depth
Microbiology - Same as with Immuno, BUT this is the class that most of my fellow classmates seemed to hate, so I would suggest going to it even though I never did (I've had micro courses at least 6 times before this one, so it was pretty easy for me)
PD - every class
Path - I think I went to the very first lecture and that was it
Neuro - every class, Dr. Dyche et al is very meticulous with this course and it would be beneficial to go
Geriatrics - I attended about half the lectures
Physiology - This one is tricky, it really came down to the lecturer or what was being lectured, but in the end I would say I went to most lectures and it was strongly beneficial that I did

I bought the old exams and used them for certain classes and found them useless for others.

YES!! MED TECHS UNITE! 👍
Munch, where in the lab did you work? I work in a children's hospital in the core lab. Nothing specific. Just a bit of everything. Micro, chem, heme, UA, blood gas, coag, drugs etc. I'll be waiting for these sections in school. Oh yea baby!

I worked in hemo. We were a pretty large hospital, plus a rehab center, and about 7 outpatient clinics. Before then I worked as a generalist on the night shift. Lab is thrown in to the classes where it's relevant, so there really never is a "lab" course to help explain what's going on down in the hole. Makes me wonder why I used to hear....must be the lab's fault...all the time.

Since I'm a little paranoid about getting every bit of my loan money for next year, I wanted to see if anyone had their grad plus loan approved and verified already on the DMU portal?

I haven't. 🙁

Nice, I am of the same opinion with all of these too...this is how I also attended the schedule last year, you get a good feel for the classes by going or by trusted classmates impressions who did go. Yeah, that neuro anatomy class was pretty involved alright. Nice list!

Although, I did ok in micro by going to most lectures or at least listen to them on mp3 and powerpoint after reviewing the notes. For Immuno, I had to go to Steele's lectures or at least listen to them on mp3 with notes and power point, I had to really go over and over on this, not much immuno before. Phys, with regard to attendance for me, was hit or miss. It was usually a matter of how I felt about sitting in there at the lecturer's pace or just go and read it and learn it quicker. That only works for phys that I'd had already learned in the past and needed less time. Some concepts in phys were helpful to hear the lecturer teach and entertain. I really liked the Geriatrics and aging and liked Dr. Bender's block. There are some outstanding lecturers and subjects that are worth attending too, just for the stories on insight information and enjoyable atmousphere.

Ok, serious question: Anyone considering buying one of those black bags? Any '09ers, '08ers, or '07ers want to give their opinion on buying one of those bags?

Another: Anyone currently own or planning on buying a white coat before moving out there? What about scrubs? I don't own any and don't know if I should buy some here or there. Thanks

🙂

I suggest: Don't get those scrubs until 'ya need 'em. As for the bag, that AMSA club offer sounds like a pretty penny for a little identity stroking. My wifey got me a nice antique bag off e-bay to celebrate finishing undergrad classes for relatively-cheap.

Does anyone know when we will be awarded the grad plus loan? Someone on another thread said it wouldn't be until October?? 😱
Any insight?

Also, we should all help each other with the moving situation. I'll be available to help someone move when I get to DMU July 30th. Let me know if you need help. I might need some. Let me know. Seriously. 👍

I'm moving this week. We'll be moving into our home in Ankeny on the 14th of July. Then the real work starts -- unpacking.

We are also making the trek this week. We plan on moving in July 17th. Wow, this time next month we will be in orientation 😱
I'm excited to meet everyone!

I am moving this Friday and Saturday, but I won't be living in Des Moines until the 22nd (I have to return to MN to go to my fiancee's family reunion). I can certianly help out if anyone needs it as well.

Hey everybody,
My family and I moved into Des Moines a couple of days ago! It's such a change from california but also wonderful. We have great neighbors who are letting us use a mattress and towels and sheets until our stuff arrives in a few days. I went to school on friday to get a workout pass and ended up talking with Dr. Mueller for a couple of hours, so nice. Anyways a couple of things..first on any pre-orientation BBQ/gathering...I can't wait...on the how much to go to school tip...to a prior poster are you saying that these 6-5 people basically didn't go to any classes?

thanks,
Kurt

I am a 09er. Here's my 2 cents:

Biochem - Tests were pretty much straight out of the handouts. Went to about a 1/3 of the classes.

Ethics - Go to all of the classes.

Anatomy - did not go to class

OMM - mandatory (and very beneficial)

Radiology - Did not attend any of the lectures, MP3s and powerpoints were enough to score an A.

Cell Biology - went to about half the lectures

Immunology/Microbiology - Tests straight out of the handouts, did not go to class.

Physiology - went to about half the classes.

Neuroanatomy - went to 1/3 of the lectures.

Geriatrics - Did not go to class.

PD - did not go to class and did very well.

Bottom line depends on how you learn best. If you are disciplined and able to get what you need from MP3s and powerpoints, the lectures don't add anything more. If you tend to screw off when you are left on your own you best go to class to give yourself some structure. Do what works for you.

Solid Post, I love bullet points.....

I think the thing that I am looking forward to the most is a new computer. My LT is on the fritz and needs to be put out of it's misery.....R.I.P Compaq Presario R3000.

I'm just excited about getting a laptop. I'm still rollin' with a desktop.

Oh yea, and back in my day we had to walk uphill to school everyday.

Contrary to what I presume most feel, I'm not excited about the laptops. I already have a sufficient desktop and paying a technology fee for laptops doesn't help my staunchly stretched budget. I'm out to squeeze my loan monies for every penny!

I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the laptop DMU provides. Also the support is top notch. It really helps to have everyone on the same sheet of music when it comes to technology as they are moving towards computorized testing.

I was just looking at the strip schedule and I'm curious if there is any sort of a break for Thanksgiving? It currently does show one.

I found somewhere that we did have like that Thursday and Friday off of class....I think I found it when I looked up schedule or something in the little search box up on top of the screen (that was before the strip came out)....but it did say it was for this year.

Yea, I think last year they only got Thursday and Friday off. The guy that I stayed with said that there are a handful of people who skip the week and just get the material (notes and mp3) off the internet and go home early.

You can't skip the week of Thanksgiving b/c there's an exam on Tuesday. We have Wed-Sun off this year, I believe. Thursday is Thanksgiving so you sould have the day prior off to travel.

Hi everyone! I've been MIA from moving all of my stuff to storage in Des Moines and then coming to Europe. I just wanted to say hi and can't wait to meet everyone! I'm moving in on Aug 1st but if anyone needs any help moving themselves, my bf and I can help. We would love to meet people.

Hey all. My DO08 buddy tells me that we'll be required to purchase a diagnostic set for SPAL, which will begin in January. The kits offered at school are ~$350 and $600+.

I found a e-bay store that offers Welch Allyn pocket scope kits, which are normally over $300, for $150 + $9 shipping. They're 2.5 volt halogen sets that have all the same features as the larger 3.5V traditional kits but run on AA size batteries and come in a nice small soft case.

Just a thought. Here's the link.

That's kind of bogus, since it's not budgeted for, and it really is a sizeable purchase.

On a side note, has anyone had their grad plus loan certified yet, or has anyone been annoying enough to contact DMU and find out when that might happen. Otherwise, I'm going to break down soon and contact them myself.

There was an e-mail sent out today that says "the next couple weeks" again. I think the diagnostic kit is budgeted for in the books and supplies category. ($3000+) There's a whole bunch of stuff we need to get. The diagnostic kit is just one thing. (stethoscope, tuning forks, hammers etc...) I imagine they'll be a Welch Allyn rep, as well as many others, there during orientation to push a bunch of stuff on us.

It's way nice, the doctors that I work with gave me one of those kits along with a disecting kit, an anatomy book, and some Netter's anatomy flash cards.

Good point. I'm sure you're right.

As I'm sure everyone else found out, DMU sent out an email that said Grad Plus loans would be done within the next week or two.

Also, in case you haven't been to the portal recently, you should log on and sign up for the free baseball tix before they run out.

Just got my grad plus!! Everything is taken care of...at least this year! 😀

As far as the tickets go...the link must be down. They better save me some!

I heard it was 103 in Des Moines w/o the heat index....and I was moving in. I sure picked a crappy day to haul furniture...too hot for my blood.

That's about what my electronic outdoor thermometer said today. Supposed to be 7-8 F hotter tomorrow too. It's been a long time since we've had a similar run of hot days tho.

I hope they quit dorking around with the financial aid awards. Mine has changed twice in the last couple weeks. 😕

106 in Utah. Freakin roasted me. BTW, I just quit my job. Ready for school to start already.

Anyone interested in a black Welch Allyn® Tycos® Harvey Elite Stethoscope, new in the box, for $84? I ended up with two of them.

These scopes are about $130 +shipping online and are reportedly quite similar in performance to a Littmann Cardiology III.

If you're in the Des Moines area and interested, I'd be happy to deliver it to 'ya.

yah yah. Laugh it up guys.

But you can't deny (as my current understanding goes) that a three year residency to be the equivalent of a specialized Gasterenterologist is very appealing just on paper. I currently have no clue what the heck I want to do and am trying to be as informed as possible. This way all I have to do is throw in the real life component of hands on experience to discover what I could actually enjoy as a career (even if it is a stereotyped 'eww' specialty).

Unc, the internet jabs are easy to hit. I hope you can bring it in real life, too. 'cause it's on.

I was just reading through the medical terminology lesson provided on the Portal earlier today, and it said that Proctology was a surgical subspecialty. So that should give you a better idea, I guess.

Geez Redneck, it's too early to get all competitive on us. Let's laugh together while we still have the time to.

One of my buddies was a PA for a gasterenterologist and he said he loved it. I clean enough ass every day to tell you that after awhile your brain just shuts down and there is no 'eww' anymore. Anyways, no fighting or making fun of people; unless you are making fun of my roomate, the king DbagMcVaginstein.

Sorry, saw the post and felt the need to take a shot. As far as 'getting my monies worth' i can dish it out as well as i can take it. All I have to say is that you better bring your A game or you're f***in done son. 🙂 Talk to you later Luke.
