Seriously, if anyone needs a review packet let me know. I'll be around this weekend too if you suddenly decide that you just can't go without it. $10 for a year's worth of practical review material.

Enjoy your weekend! Don't forget to study your cervical plexus :scared:

WTH a OMM fellow😱 😱 😱

Can I report these posts to a moderator to get them deleted?

Janitor, You could always be saying "would you like fries with that..." I'm sure your wife would be REAL happy about that.

Sounds good, I'll swing by school sometime after noon. Sound good? Drop me an e-mail or just PM me and let me know when you'll be there and I'll stop by...

Interesting thread started in the Osteopathic forums about "Debt Stress" - worth a read in my opinion! Check it out.

djnels,

Sort of was an interesting post, but I just want to reassure you about FP. FP in Iowa (don't know if this is where you are thinking staying or not) is actually fairly well reimbursed due to the larger groups (such as Iowa Health Systems). I know a number of family physicians in Iowa who make well over what most people think FP's do...not to mention groups like this are offering signing bonuses up to 20K. Oh...they also are very happy to negotiate w/ you in a loan repayment schedule.

I can answer more questions by PM if you want more specific than I want to get on here.

all I wanna do is not study, play nintendo, and own your arse in TFC😎

We bust ours
To help theirs.
Masters of the all-nighters,
Supporters of caffeine.
Sleep is but another word,
A far less important one than fascia.
Pushing ourselves
For that extra tenth of a grade.
Somehow it doesn’t matter,
Those wise-second years tell us.
The boards will level us all,
Make our efforts worthless they say…
Our noses to our 700 pages of biochemistry,
Our pens doodling on our useless behavioral medicine books…
We ignore them, pushing on.
Together we have arrived…
With one goal in mind…
To make tons of money and marry supermodels…
Err,
To bust ours,
So we can help theirs…

always a joy to read your stuff jamers

😍 😍

I am looking for an opinion on the histology book. Is it one of those stay around forever by your side kinda books or the type that bangs you one night and never calls again? Is it worth me walking down one flight of stairs and buying it or am I better off looking at porn in the library?

Histo book is an easy read and can be useful in other courses. I'd say it's an in between book it's not one you will never use again, but it certainly isn't a Netter's or Robbins level, which you will most likely use a lot. It is a good book overall though.

Anyone have any idea what they're going to spend on their PD equipment? I'm looking at spending the least amount possible since I've heard just about EVERYWHERE that you don't use it after your first 2 years of school... the exception being the stethoscope of course (I plan on having that thing for a while!)

The way I see it, I'm poor enough as it is. Yes it is budgeted for, but if I really want to pay for the fancy otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes, I'll do it later in life when I actually have the money😀

Any 2nd, 3rd, 4th years that are lurking care to respond?

Get a good stethoscope (Littmann and DRG are popular ones, get one that you feel comfortable wearing) for sure. As for the diagnostic kits, I never used mine after we finished SPALs. It comes in handy when a family member wants to be casually checked out, but you can be pretty sure that wherever you go for rotations, they will have the equipment hanging from the wall.

As for the fancy PanOptic opthalmoscope...Unless you are dead set on going into Optho, don't get it. You can use it on SPAL's & actually, I can't see a damn thing through one of them. With a standard one I can walk up to a squirming kid & find the cup & disk, but for the life of me I can't use that stupid (way overpriced) PanOptic.

If you ever plan on travelling, get the standard battery. If you are somewhere that doesn't have electricity or standard outlets, you can unscrew a few caps & plop in batteries. You can't do that w/ the lightweight NiCad (or whatever the black, lightweight one is).

Thank you guys for the good advice. Should we just get the run of the mill BP cuff?

The Littmann sales rep was great. She basically said, "They're Littmann's....need I say more," and then she was done. The other group fed us a fair amount of BS.

I'm a second year at DMU and I say buy enough to get by. Stay away from the sales rep and their "rap". They're out to make money. I was able to get everything I needed for PD for under $500. I was able to get a Welch Allen oto/ophthalmoscope for about $350 online. Works fine and I can actually see better with it than that "panoptic" scope the reps rave about (I've only used it 3 times since I got it; once in the PD practice lab, once in a SPAL and once while trying to reattach a tiny wire to guitar foot pedal (Helped to really light up the area and magnifiy the connection)). As for stethoscopes, don't spend more than a $100 on it. I've used the $50 Littman as a RN in the ER and here for the SPALS and it works fine. Is it the best? No. But it does what I need it to do for now. Don't buy the black bag, don't need it. Save your money. Buy the higher end stuff later when you know what it is you need to do the job.

Sometimes I think I am intelligent and then I sit through one of these lectures and I realize just how stupid I am...

No black bag? So what do you keep all of the crap in?

I just use the bag they gave me for my laptop to bring my stuff to SPAL. Work's fine, and guess what?--- Nobody makes fun of me, or really gives a rat's ass as long as I have what I need. Unless you are planning to do house calls (which are by and large long gone in this day and age), you don't need a "traditional black bag". Save your money.

You don't get a haircut because you're balding and you don't shave because you haven't hit puberty yet. Tell me how that works out?

As long as I get your momma screaming about how beautiful bald is and how she likes the unshaven lumberjack-types, that is all I need in life baby.👍

They have a 2011 DMU class thread already, anyone else feel old?

I might end up pissing someone off with this post, but oh well. I'm listening to the mp3 of the review session that was this last Friday covering exam 5 of Biochem, and all I can say is how happy I am that I didn't go to the session.

Who in the hell keeps asking questions about Dr. McCray's CF study?? 95% of the questions should've been directed towards Dr. McCray, considering they are completely irrelevant to the test. Review sessions are for asking questions pertaining to the TEST. They're not for your own person inquiry.
Ok, I just needed to vent, because I'm actually finding myself yelling out loud.

Stopped going a long time ago. To many dumb questions that can be answered by READING THE FREAKIN MATERIAL!! I'm so glad this class is over.
Good luck tomorrow to everyone. 👍

Naw, the best is when they ask questions about chemistry that have nothing at all to do with our test. I heard a kid ask one time about ring flips, yeah, chair and boat conformation ****. WHO THE **** ASKS THAT?? You know who? People who don't get laid, yes, I said it. God made porn for a reason, so dumb ****s wouldn't attempt to act intelligent by asking stupid conformational questions.

Jamers, WTF are you doing up that late? Or did you get up REALLY early?

Hope the test went well for everyone-

dude, I almost fell out of my chair laughing at this one. I've got to hand it to you jamers, ONCE IN A WHILE, you lay a golden egg to behold.

Test is over, now the real juggling act begins. Oh let's see, study for my freakin huge biochem final next monday, or spend more time on anatomy and try to catch up, hit histology since it's actually begining to become challenging or sleep and leap frog the whole thing. hummmmmmm....😕

Anyone else completely unmotivated to study for the biochem final? 670+ pages of material staring me in the face right now...... and all I want to do is play XBOX or point and laugh at SOUNDMAN 😴

Waking up this morning and realizing that we have a 11-12:30 diversity training session was wonderful. I think I am going to throw my calander away, there is not use for it anymore. The schedual is randomly generated, I am certain of it. The teachers get together and draw dates from a giant hat as to when their classes will be. I think they should start next year off with a mandatory shocky-monkey. You know, when you just start to get used to things, it pops out and shocks the **** out of you with 10,000 volts. I think that would be a nice wake up call in the morning, like someone punching me in the nuts at 6:00 am. **** Foldgers.

4 more days 'til Biochemistry is history...

How much has/will everyone spend(t) on PD equipment? I'm at ~ $575.

About $675. I still hadn't bought a bag, so that's included in the cost. I went with the cheapest PD set, the second cheapest BP, and the Littmann III.

Dj, do me a favor.

Kill me.
To biochem, I say unto thee....

Bite me.

I would be quite satisfied with my life if I never had to see or know what acetyl CoA is/does/becomes again......

😱

😱

What is acetyl CoA? 😕 😕

Will that be on the test??

oh, I'm screwed...again.
😱

Janitor, lets just play some Xbox and make fun of soundman some more. Where am I? One guess...that's right, the freakin library...again.

Hey - hate to interrupt your fun but any musicians at DMU know if there are any community orchestras nearby? Or even regional orchestras - something? Know where I can find that out? I got accepted to DMU this week & I'm pretty happy about it, but I want to be able to play at least a little bit at school... Okay - so I know there's going to be no free time, but I'm dreamin' right now, so work with me, here! Thanks. 😀

I only spent 30 seconds looking this up, so there may be more options available... but take a look at this:

It's great that you want to keep up with the music. Good luck with your med. school decision-

P.S. - I know of at least one member of the 2010 class that is a part of the above orchestra. You could ask her what life is like as a med student/violinist... if you want her e-mail PM me.

A woman walks into your office. She is very homly looking and is complaining of lethargy. You notice small bruises on her face and arms to which she links to her "poor sense of balance." Upon talking to her more, you realize that she is in the pre-contimplation stage of the transtheoretical model in respect to leaving her husband who abuses her. Approaching the issue, you get her to reveal to you her mistrust for the medical profession due to her cultural differences. Being the culturally compentent physician that you are, you hold her to your shoulder and have a good-long cry about how corrupt the system is. Several moments pass and you start to notice thick sweat beading on her forehead. As 15 minutes have not yet passed, you feel it inapproiate to end the conversation yet. Thus, you send her for a blood sample to determine what her lack of energy is coming from. The results come back and you observe very low levels of blood glucose. What would be your evaluation of the situation:

A) She is a white, poor female who will best leave her husband by being shown information reguarding the issue.
B) She will refuse any effort to change and you should just send her home and tell her to eat a candy bar.
C) Ignoring her blood results, you invite her back for another session
D) You wonder why in the hell the behavioral medicine faculty is now writing Biochemistry questions.

These are the nightmares I have; this is why I don't sleep...

Thanks a lot! Yeah - I spent hours yesterday clicking link after link and the thought never crossed my mind to try something as obvious as that... Oh well!

Well now that Biochem is done I wonder how long it will take me to forget everything I've learned. Not that I WANT to forget anything, but let's be realistic it's gonna happen...
