****DMU Class of 2011- Continued....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They reuse the cases from year to year. It's actually one of the things they keep repeating when PD gets going. Otherwise what would keep the second year PD TA's from telling their group about the cases they remember from the previous year?

Not to mention it would be a whole lot of work to write 4-5 different cases for each of 12 (or more, I don't really remember) SPALs. That would be at least 60 cases to write + the instructors maintaining their practices in the clinics.

I guess evenflowcarter didn't get the memo (or blatant pre-SPAL instructions) that you weren't supposed to discuss SPAL cases w/ anyone who hasn't yet taken them.

That post really ruins the entire learning opportunity from that SPAL 👎.

First of all Krazykitter I would like to thank you for your always great response in answering questions for us newbies, but this is a little dramatic. Evenflow didn't tell us anything that the Profs haven't already said. They've given examples, acted out a senario, and given a list of objectives to follow. Basically it seems we need to competently engage the patient and not be a dick. So unless Evenflow is standing in the room telling us how to empathize with the patient, and access their stage of change I think we're still pretty much on our own. Just my 2 cents as I see it.

This Spal thing kind of reminds me of the 4th Harry potter were they have an idea of what they are up against, but there is always a twist somewhere. Anyways, we dont know any medicine or diagnosing skills, all we can do is talk to them in a kind and professional way about the topic thrown at us....like at our interviews.

I didn't mean to be dramatic & I am certaintly not a whistle-blower/honor code guru so I will leave what I have said & let it be as it is. Good to see that evenflow edited his/her post though which must say something...

SPALs really are good things though (excluding the BM one, of course) & you will be surprised how comfortable you are even at the beginning of your first rotation third year. Kind of funny that the Beh. Med keeps being translated into BM describing how perfectly shattastic it is 🙂

After todays lectures I now feel like I'm in med school. Anyone else feeling bogged down now?

WORD!!!😡

It only gets better boys and girls. When anatomy kicks in, it's on. :scared:
Keep your heads up and know that it is what it is and you can only do what you can do. Enjoy that B. med exam comming up. I can still feel the anger inside of me from that one.

jbone how did you study for this? Aside from the grand theories (Freud, Erickson, etc.) I don't know what to look at. We get 10 pages of notes a class that is just a random smattering of facts and statistics.

seriously...at least i have the transtheoritical model and motivational interviewing skills down, thanks SPAL!👍

Hey Jbone, did you buy the anatomy book "essential clinical anatomy" I know you wanted to go into surgery so did buy this book to get a better grasp on anatomy or did the class material suffice? Come on man...give me the scoop.
Oh by the way, Cool Basil is really good. Next stop is Thai Flavor

hopefully someone can answer this for me and I'm probably making a big deal about it but are folders, files in the student judy server for everyone? Can 2011 access any folders/files from other years?

Yep, 2010 has a lot of useful stuff in there.

I ended up punching my SPAL patient in the forehead.

Gosh I hope I passed now...

As for B.Med (the initials remind me more and more of BOWEL MOVEMENT every day), I am just going to memorize the main theories, (esp. Freud + Mr. Erik) and go over concepts many times.

I heard success has a lot to do whether or not you can think like Dr. Mom (Means)

I think the best thing BM has given me is the positive outlook on old age. Now I know I can look forward to being ramped up on drugs, boozing and having sex with the ho in 402 in the assisted living facility my children put me in. 👍

Yes, I bought the book but didn't use it much. It depends on how you study. Some people really get a lot out of the books. I'll sell anyone my books for the first year if you want them. Just take the bookstore price and half it. I really don't care and don't use them much anymore. Let me know if anyone wants them. And yes, cool basil is the bomb. Keep you heads up and good luck on your "BM" test.

Don't get too excited about it since you'll probably be diagnosed with "Alzheimer's" & won't remember any of it 😕

or Parkinson's, but the ho in 402 might like the vibrations

(God is going to give me Parkinsons in 50 years for that comment)

How'd that test go for everyone? I know I didn't fail but I also know that an "A" in my future is unlikely. I felt like there were some sneaky questions on there. I could get almost every question down to two answers and then had trouble deciding on some of them; a little frustrating......

I 2nd

I probably failed.

I'm going to start smoking today...that's what I get out of Beh. Med

All I know is that Ho in 402 is looking better right now😳

If you like cool basil, you'll probably like thai flavors, because they are owned by the same people. But, Thai flavors has a little added east side flavor that you west siders wouldn't understand.

does anyone know where a recycling center drop off is? i have boxes and plastic piling up and i don't know what to do with them.

You're not the only one UIC, my scores aren't up either. I'm not sure if they'll be up until Tuesday.

Nox, I'm not sure where you live, but if you're anywhere around 3000 Grand, lemme know. I'll let you in so you can chuck all that in the recylcing bins and save you a trip to wherever that center is.

On a side note...Looks like we may be getting the grades from TWO tests back on Tues afternoon...yikes

That cant be good...if you did well on one test, your subsequent happiness is quenched by doing bad on the other, if you did bad on both..well, good luck with that...if you did great in both, its quenched by the fact that your behind in anatomy lectures and behavioral med is starting up again...

The moral of the story is that med school is really easy and stress free.

i'm on park ave...but thanks for the offer. i asked at the office here and they were no help... pretty soon i'll be like one of those pack rats with only an aisle to walk through the apartment.

Hey nox,

There is a recycling center on 1817 Euclid Ave, Des Moines, IA
(515) 262-4040. (If you're going there from school, head north on MLK and then take a right on Douglas. Go past the river and it should be on your left side.) Here's the website for times/etc: http://www.artisticwaste.com/.

We make routine stops there about once a week or so. You have to sort everything yourself, but it's free to drop stuff off! Hope this help!

Behavioral Med test scores are up as of 645pm Sunday

Class avg. 80%...everyone prepared to argue??

Seems like a lot of people got #19 wrong

come on...who would have thought that behavioral med was going to be harder that Biochem????....I pull high 90's in biochem but it seems impossible to pull an A in this class...I definitely didnt think I got as much wrong as the portal has up...we defintely got to argue some of these question (it is sorta telling that nobody got a 100)..problem is I am gonna have to go back and relearn the material to see if I was right in the first place......and by the way I got # 19 wrong too...

And I am the only one here who thought that "social smile" is NOT an indicator of synchrony, because it is a precursor!...ok back to some real science...

I def. agree, Killa! GRRRRRR! Who knew our first year would be stained with such an 'evil' class. OH well, you're right: we def. need to get ready to argue ( I got # 19 wrong as well) & we have to bust our asses on the next exam in hopes of doing decently in this bull S***t class.
I guess we can only try to do well in the REAL science classes like you said. That exam is OVER & what counts is what's ahead...only thing is that some of us really got burned by this one 🙁 No more 4.0's in med school😡

Do you guys think there is any hope of the scores going up? I did better than the average but I don't want this class pulling my GPA down. Monsma was talking last year about that 1st run, 2nd run stuff; I didn't really follow her but I hope that that works to our advantage this year.

Hopefully...i am trying to figure out how I can get an A in this class and right now if we can get a few of the questions changed (like 3-4), then because there were only 46 questions your percentage can go up a lot higher. Some second years did tell me that you should expect your scores to go up...so I am quite hopeful...do you think Monsma does this on purpose?...I mean if she puts questions in there that she knows will eventually be debated and changed, then why put it on the test?...

And M-said...dont get too worried yet...remember, the more questions you got wrong the more you can get back...🙂

If 3-4 questions get changed I will be a happy man.

Don't forget guys BM is only 2 credits. This is out of 45+ creditss we're taking this year so getting a B or C won't do much to your GPA. Of course it won't be a 4.0 but a 3.85 isn't bad. But bring on the extra points, I could use some 🙂

since i couldn't make myself study for the bm test (i really did try) i would have been happy just to pass, so you won't hear me complain about my score. although i would like to see it a little higher. i'd kind of like to know what #19 was since i also got it wrong.

oh and thanks tennisgal, even with my lousy sense of directions i think i'll be able to find this place. i now know what i'll be doing tuesday after class.

GPA?? what is that? 70% = DOCTOR 🙂

..true...but 70% could also mean residency out in the some community program in the boonies...😉 (If that is what you like..than your fine)

I know several of the people I study with who missed question 19 as well as questions 1 and 2. Did a bunch of you guys miss 1 and 2?

Any extra points on a second run would be sweet! 😀

I'm definitely in that boat.

I missed 1 and 19 but got 2 right. I would list the ones i got wrong but then you guys would know my score and I don't want to throw a fit now.

After I went back and looked I found out i got #2 also; still, it would be nice to get 1 and 19 back.
