What does everyone think of this years match? I must say, I am impressed.

http://www.dmu.edu/com/residencies/2009specialty.cfm

so after looking at this matchlist it makes me wonder...as a CA resident, I'd love to come to Des Moines for a legit education, but I feel like I'd probably want to take my residency back to CA, but there was only a few students of the 250 that did so. Is it hard to get a non-midwest residency from a midwest school?

Are there very many other CA applicants for Des Moines?

I don't think you can make any grand assumptions based solely on the match list because it's only part of the story. Perhaps fewer people from DMU truly WANT to be in California for residency.

Also, according to the list, people matched all throughout the country in many different states. I don't think you'd have a problem. Just my opinion.

I'm only a first year, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But I don't think that this will be a problem for you. The students here have access to a mentor program that consists of DMU alumni. I just looked on the list, and I saw about 10 DOs from DMU currently practicing in CA. Now these are just the DO's that signed up to be a part of the mentor program, so there should be a lot more in CA. Also, like the above poster said, there are people from DMU in various parts of the country. On the mentor list, there are a ton of alumni all along the east coast, in Fl, WA, and just about every other state. I really don't think this will be an issue for you.

You can do some audition rotations out in CA during your 4th year, and this could play a big role in you getting a spot out there.

Something that was said to me during my presentation at the interview was that some of the California hospitals require screening processes that actually require you to be there before you apply for rotations there making it very difficult to rotate there.

Does anyone have info about pre-interview holds? Are they nice rejections or do people really get reevaluated later in the cycle for potential interviews???

Hey, my interview is next week and I have a question for people that have already interviewed this year. Did they ask you a lot about Obama's health care reform at all? And if so, did they ask anything specific or just vague questions? I want to be prepared for anything at this point so the interview goes well. Thanks!

Hey, I interviewed there last week and they didn't ask me anything about the current health care issue. I was pretty worried before my interview too about questions about Obama's plan, so I would suggest you google or wikipedia everything and just get a general understanding. Besides that, don't worry, it's a very relaxed interview, look over your primary app a few times b/c they asked me a lot of specific questions. You'll do great! =)

How far out are interivews being scheduled right now? I should be complete early next week.

I got mine last week and the earliest I could get was November 12th. Hope that helps.

Anyone hear anything who interviewed on 9/25? I know they said 1-2 weeks but the wait is driving me nuts. I wish DMU would throw me a bone so I knew whether to attend my remaining interviews. I know I'm "preaching to the choir" here, but it sure would be nice to stop flying cross-country every other week!

Thank you, my interview was last Thursday so hopefully I get some good news in two weeks! They did not ask me about health care issues, well nothing about Obama, but they did ask me about if there was one thing I would change about the physicians I have seen what I would change.

Anyways, the school is amazing and I really hope I get in, hopefully we all hear some good news!

I interviewed on the 17th and haven't heard back yet, so you may be waiting a bit longer.

Edit: Did they really say 1-2 weeks? I thought it was more like 2-3; if it's 1-2 I think I'll be calling them tomorrow.

I was told 2 weeks the monday after my interview. So I interviewed 9/1, it is 9/5.. so hopefully two weeks from 9/5.

I think it is just an estimate though, I am sure they get backed up with other stuff going on, we will see though. I hope you hear soon!

I sent an e-mail just to see what they were up to (I'm not usually this impatient, DMU is just a rockin' school), and got a reply that they've been understaffed this week, but acceptances should be going out tomorrow (Tuesday).

Hey, I am with you on this one. I heard good things about DMU but I was truly impressed when I was at my interview. I wish I could hear back this week!

Oh man, here we go. Can't say whether I'd be in this batch, but I'll be checking my email constantly tomorrow, just in case.

And, as far as post-interview timelines go, anything admissions says should be taken with a grain of salt. For example, AZCOM told us we'd hear back in approximately two weeks, yet I was accepted after two days! It's unpredictable, to be sure!

I hope that happens with me and DMU haha.

I was really impressed with this school, too. Hoping for an acceptance here.

Interviewed 9/18 and got an "accepted" email this morning. I am so excited, after interviewing DMU is by far my top choice! 😀 Good Luck everyone. Hopefully I'll be seeing some of you next fall.

You got in! Good job and congrats!

Congrats!

Thanks for all of the love. I am so EXCITED! But I also realized that for Christmas I better start asking Santa for some gloves and a jacket bc I don't think the flip flops year around attire will cut it in Iowa. 🙄

I just got an interview invite from DMU! I am so freakin' excited. DMU is my #1 choice!! My friend currently attends DMU and absolutely LOVES this school. Didn't think I would even have a shot at DMU! WOW!!!! Soooooo excited!!!!!!!!!! What hotel is everybody staying at?
SOoooooo excited! YAY!!!

Congrats! What day are you interviewing? As for the hotel, I chose Comfort Inn.

waitlisted. 🙁

"While we are currently unable to offer you a seat in the class, we may make additional offers of admission at the close of the application year. Your position within the Alternate List guarantees that you will be considered if space becomes available. If vacancies in the Class of 2014 occur at the conclusion of the application cycle, selected candidates will be notified immediately."

does this mean that i will not be considered to get off the waitlist until at least may??

Lokiperson, Thanks!! I am interviewing 11/19. I am very excited about it. This is THE school I want to attend! Yay!

unfortunately. Don't let it getcha down, at least its not a full on rejection, and people do get pulled. Keep those fingers :xf:

I just received my results (via email) that I have been accepted at DMU-COM! I was so happy, I almost passed out

Anyway, congratulations to everyone else who was accepted. If not, do NOT give up. It is early in the admission cycle and being waitlisted does NOT mean you do not have a chance anymore. If rejected, keep your head up.

To those who have interviews coming up, please feel free to ask me any questions about the interview process there. I am NOT an expert but I have experienced first-hand what it felt like and was as nervous as anyone here on SDN.

Good luck :xf:

🙂
That's really exciting that you got accepted to DMU. I have my first interview there in two weeks. I am pretty excited but also kinda nervous. Do you have any advice for their interviews? Also, is there anything they asked that was really ridiculous?

When I was in your position, I looked at some of the interview feedbacks, and they turned out to be just about spot on. (well, the ones indicating it was low-stress anyway). I'm a bit of a worrier, and was basically sweating the whole day, but once I started talking with some of the 2nd year students I was able to relax and when I finally got into the interview things went very smoothly.

I don't remember the exact questions they asked, but a number of them had to deal with my family and my uncle (a DO whom I've shadowed), both of which I mentioned in my personal statement. I'd have a good grasp on the information in there, as well as in the rest of your application. They also asked if I knew anything about the recent events in politics related to healthcare; I mentioned some of the things I had read in the transcript of Obama's speech that he gave in the middle of Sept, mainly about how changes to the litigious nature of medicine could be beneficial. We also talked a bit about Des Moines, and they asked if I had gotten a chance to walk around and experience the city at all. They, of course, asked if I had any additional questions for them, and as always it's good to ask a couple to show your interest. The interview ended by them asking what I thought made me the best candidate and what they should remember about me.

One thing I liked a lot about the interview was it felt very inviting and not like they were trying to poke holes in my application or my personality. There was still some pressure, obviously, but far less than I've experienced in other interviews. They gave lots of feedback, in the form of smiling and nodding, which is exceptionally reinforcing when you're as nervous as I was. I don't think I was particularly funny or clever and I didn't have em laughing like other interviewees purportedly did, but I think I successfully displayed my maturity and that I am ready to enter med school.

As long as you have a solid app (and even if you don't, make sure you know why things didn't happen the way they should have; IE low mcat, low grades in a couple classes) and take some time to think about how you'd answer a lot of those general interview questions I think you will do great.

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the school!

Interviewed on the 24th. Tomorrow is the day they said I would hear back...

Hey LetMeBeADoc, I interviewed with you on 9/24 (the one guy from Iowa). Here's to hoping we all hear good news at some point this week...the sooner the better.

Accepted!!! I just got the email. Now I have a decision to make...DMU or AZCOM?

Got the email today! Interviewed only 10 days ago.

Accepted! I interviewed on 9/24...now I withdraw from all other schools. Congrats to everyone else, and I look forward to meeting you next fall!

Uh oh, I interviewed on the 25th and haven't heard anything yet. Does this mean I should be expecting a hold/rejection email soon? :-/

Accepted!!!

Wow, last year I had to wait until April to find out I wasn't going anywhere. Not only do I get in, but I don't have to wait anymore to find out!!

I am happy for both of us Hawkguy - I remember talking for a little while that day.

I got accepted today too! I interviewed on the 1st so I wasn't supposed to find out until next week! That was a good surprise 🙂

Looks like a lot of people from that batch got in! Or just post on SDN a lot...

Congrats to all!

Waitlisted. Not at all surprised. My interview didn't go very smoothly so this is the outcome I expected.

Hang in there - being waitlisted, while it puts you in a difficult position, means that you were competitive enough for them to strongly consider you. You'll have plenty of opportunities ahead of you. It's important that you continue to see yourself as a strong candidate and to keep your confidence up. You'll get in if you keep working at it!

I've been accepted to AZCOM, which I felt was more of a good fit for me. So, it is not the end of the world! Thanks for the kind words though.
