DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone who got accepted to DMU and KCUMB willing to share your thoughts on how you picked DMU? I really liked them both but only want to make one deposit. I found the two schools really similar and both amazing so I am having a hard time choosing...

I have just withdrawn my acceptance to DMU; best of luck everyone else!

I just paid my $500 deposit. Gonna have to put in some extra hours in the lab .

Hey guys
I will be interviewing over at DMU this Friday (Dec. 10th).
Anyone else interviewing that day?

I need to make a decision between DMU and CCOM within the next week and would LOVE your feedback! Has anyone else made a decision between these schools? What were the key determining factors for you? Below is my short list of pros for each. Please add more items to my lists!

CCOM: reputation/prestige; excellent clinical rotation schedule; diversity of student body; beauty of area/western suburbs

DMU: affordability (tuition and living expenses); new facilities; technologically advanced; surgical skills lab; simulation program; good residency matches in my home state (due to proximity, probably); more flexibility with classes and learning styles

Thanks!!

I think you could put reputation under DMU as well. I don't know if you consider it a pro or con, but you have entire 4th year of electives at DMU.

I'm having a difficult time deciding between the two as well... I'm from the NW suburbs of Chicago, so I'm leaning towards CCOM but I can't get over how much tuition is! It's even higher than some MD schools in the Chicagoland area. 😎 On the other hand, being at DMU for the interview just felt right to me.... such a hard decision to make!!

autumnchild had a thread about this not too long ago:

@autumnchild: what helped you make your decision after weighing the entire list of pros and cons, getting feedback from SDN, and thinking about it for at least a month? maybe your input could help dr15, oct16 and seegoods

Just withdrew my acceptance, so one of you on the waitlist can have it! Hope you all have a good year!

Just submitted my seat deposit! Let me see if I can help some of you make your decision. This was definitely a difficult decision. I don't really want to compare all three schools here just b/c it's be a long post so here's a quick rundown. (btw, all these schools are pretty reputable/established - and their match lists and pass rates comparable so i won't mention those)

CCOM:
+ves are great rotation sites, close proximity to Chicago & my hometown, diversity of student body
-ves are very limited time for elective rotations, no sim lab, expensive!!

KCUMB:
+ves are path professor, systems based curriculum, urban environment, new construction
-ves are school area not so safe, dress code, not very transparent as a school

DMU:
+ves: facilities, surgery skills lab, friendliest environment I encountered, 28 wks of elective time
-ves: lack of diversity, not in the most urban of areas

Honestly, it really all came down to fit. I really enjoyed my interview day and felt this was the best school for me. Hope this helped someone 🙂

I'm was having trouble deciding between CCOM and DMU as well. Both are great schools. However, I choose DMU because I think Des Moines offers a more relaxed, less expensive, and more family friendly location for medical school. Also, DMU did a great job of making me feel as though they really wanted me there, both in the interview and via e-mails sent after my acceptance. It was a hard decision, because CCOM is a beautiful, reputable school, but ultimately the cost is too much for me. For people still trying to decide, good luck. I think no matter where you go to medical school, you create your own opportunity, so pick the school you feel most at home at!

For those of you planning on DMU, I can't wait to meet you! Best of luck to everyone through this tough process.

For those interested, my stats:
3.5 cum, 3.9 sci, 34P, OOS, non-trad

DMU class of 2015🙂

Congrats on the big decision! I am also choosing to leave family in Colorado (withdrawing from Rocky Vista). That was the hardest part, but I know DMU will be the most conducive to my success. I hope you are confidents in your choice, I know I can't wait to get started at DMU!

hey seap3. thanks for ur response. so if there is no secondary, do you just fill out some sort of form and then send in reference letters? i just want to be prepared. thanks for helping out.

I'm from CO too and did the exact same thing with RVU. I think DMU has a good amount of students from CO. So excited to meet everyone. 🙂

Thank you all for your quick responses and helpful feedback! I really appreciate it! I agree with all of your additions to my list--reputation, international training opportunities, fit, electives, and environment (campus and city). I will post an update once I make a final decision and submit my deposit. 🙂

...and on day 31, I got the interview invite.

SO EXCITED!!!!

Hey, this is Andrew from the interview at DMU today for the DO program, just thought I would get a SDN account and update if I get accepted, wait-listed, or rejected.

I just submitted my seat deposit and enrollment agreement three days ago. 😛

Yay!

I know school is gonna start in early August next year, but do you guys know the exact date? I'm planning on going to a trip in summer and I need the date. Thank you! 😀

I am going to be at DMU next year ad am soooo excited!!!

Hola amigos!

Within my acceptance e-mail, they stated the following:

"The Conditions of Enrollment Agreement form must be signed and returned to the Enrollment Management Office, along with the appropriate seat deposit payment, on or before 5pm CST on January 3, 2001 . . . Your offer of admission is contingent upon all conditions being met by the deadlines shown. Failure to do so could result in your inability to register for classes and your admission offer being rescinded."

Does anyone know how quickly they rescind the offer if the payment is not submitted?

Thanks in advance!

I also got accepted to both! I decided on DMU because I really didn't like the area of KC that KCUMB was. It's important to me that I feel safe and can easily come to and from school without being worried about how I will get there. That really was the deciding factor for me. I also liked DMU's campus better. They also have more cadavers/student I think if I remember correctly. I also liked that there are other programs on DMU's campus. I think as a medical professional, interacting with other professions is important (ie PA, PT, Podiatry..etc). Good luck deciding! It was a hard one for me too!!

I think the orientation is on the first week of august.

Hi everyone,

I have an interview at the school this week and i need some suggestions on transportation from the school to hotel to airport. What did you all do for transportation? Car rental, taxi, public transportation? BTW, I will fly into Des Moines International and my hotel will be close to the school. Any suggestions would be great! thanks in advance.

Paid my $500 seat deposit today!

And for whoever was asking, my deadline is December 15th and I received an email saying I will lose my seat if I do not pay by then. It sounds like they do not extend the deadline, but if it is absolutely necessary I would advise calling them and explaining your situation. They are very helpful, reply quickly, and will be able to give you the answers you need.

I'm interviewing this week too 😉. I found the easiest way to go is to rent a car. This worked for me because I'm only staying one day, and enterprise is about $19/day. I e-mailed one of the current students who said there is a bus route called DART, but the times didn't seem very convenient and it doesn't look like it goes to the airport. She also said a taxi ride is about $15 from the school to the airport. Good Luck!

I'm just wondering who has decided to attend DMU for sure?

Well, I'm not 100% sure yet. I'm still waiting on another school's admission decision. They are not going to inform me about the decision until next year. But I paid DMU seat deposit anyway..

After my interview at Western today, I am way more psyched about DMU.
Seriously, that thing is good. I wanna be friends with it. :meanie:

+1, except the earliest I could hear back is Dec. 15th (go figure) or end of Dec.

Just curious do you think you are going to DMU for sure or you are still deciding? Anyway did you get any info about scholarship?

Yeah I'm almost completely certain I will be attending DMU. The other option I was waiting on was my state school and I was not very impressed. It took them 10 weeks to give me a decision and the interview day did not impress me. The only way I could see myself going there instead of DMU is if I was offered a full tuition scholarship which I don't see happening. Overall, I like DMU much better and am excited to attend class in the fall. Did you decide if you are going here yet or are you still deciding?

As far as scholarships, I was told the committee would meet some time in December. They will automatically consider people with specific GPA and MCAT (and probably other aspects later). There is no application to fill out for merit based scholarship. There are other scholarships available, some with applications, and they are posted earlier in this thread with links. I was told people who receive these scholarships will be notified via email and snail mail. There was no indication of when decisions will be made so it's anyone's guess.

I'm still waiting to hear back from a few schools but I'd be more than happy to attend DMU next year. 🙂

Congrats rocketman! did ur "training" on interview day help prepare u? 😀

 that was awesome btw

Thanks guys!! We are so happy with our little guy. My "training" did not come into play this time (unfortunately) becuase we had a C-Section.

Although during the surgery I was trying to watch the doctors work, but my wife was like "honey, stop looking at that!, you will learn soon enough."

I am such an overachiever, lol. YAY BABIES
