DMU self-proclaimed super-geniuses of the third row

I said put YOUR money on indy. even if I had a pot to pee in I'd still not put it on a game. I'd invest in the Jonwill podiatric prectice. I think I'll have a huge return.
I just have a brother that still watches the Wlater Payton work video-seriously-so I have to be able to rant somewhere. The bears have a solid D-the line is taking a hit, but unless Indy gets Adai(sp.?) loose Urlacher is to fast for the T.E. of indy to exploit the middle. still going with 17 points. You have to be bold, yet meek. Grossgamo or Ferraman I mean Ferragamo and Grossman😱 may easily be in the bottom Super Bowl QB talk together soon. Grossman has a great touch but he is very predictable-partly due to a reliance on the run-it compromises 3 down field position and unlike manning he just doesn't have a sure fire Hall of Famer to bail him out of 3-13. I also have the Razorback bias to anything coming from Florida.

Than we can both agree on this: If the Bears put out another Super Bowl shuffle, I'm dropping them  I'll be moving to Lions country soon anyway!

Lions country! I have been a in-hiding lions fan since 1988. Yes I am dated. I route for Philly and Detroit and anyone playing the Dodgers, Cardinals, Lakers, or Cowboys. Moving? s this res, another of the 1 month things? I'm still trying to figure out how all this works. got to get my paper in before midnight. and get some 😴 for 7:30 chem!

Go cardinals! world champs baby!😀

I know, it can be confusing. At DMU, the 4th year is pretty basic. You are required to do a 4 month core in one place (the school has 25 or so core rotations to choose from), a one month private practice rotation, and 6 one month externship rotations. So starting in June, I've done all of my one month externships and my one month of private practice. I took this month off and will finish my 4th year with my core (Feb-May) here in Iowa. Other classmates did a 1st core (June-Sep). The issue with that is that you see less programs before interviews in Dec. However, if you really want a program badly, then doing 4 months at one program before interviews is greatly beneficial. And then there is a 2nd core (Oct-Jan) that some students also do. So that is how it all works, at least at DMU.

I'll be moving to Michigan after I graduate for my residency training.

For those of you who have finished your first year, what did you do over the first summer? Did you work? I ask because the budget is for the school year but not the summer, so i was wondering if you had to get a job to survive financially until school started again. By the way GO COLTS!!!

I saved money from my living expenses loan. That allowed me to enjoy my summer off. That is kind of miss leading b/c I got married that summer so I would not call it "off."

If I did it over again, I would do research. You can get paid ~$7 to $8 an hour and get some research on your CV.

Where's that research list that's supposed to be posted by Yoho's office? I went up there, but there was nothing and no one was in his office? Also, if I'm not super enthusiastic about research (but I know the value and importance of it and would genuinely like to contribute to my profession) what do you 3rd and 4th years suggest? As we know, most residencies require at least 1 publication and a lot 2-3 pubs in a 3 year residency. Thanks Feelgood and Jonwill (and whomever else answers this question for me).

Josh Moore and I will be coming to talk to your class about research very soon and I can answer these questions in person.

I knew we were having the discussion on research but with you being one of the presenters I hope they reserved the SEC👍

As for the research board if you go the 7th floor. Walk into the clinic and take your first left. The board is up on that wall. Dr. Lidtke has a few papers up there. I also have a few projects for students if their is interest.

I'm just curious about 4th year externships. So a lot of places only allow 1 month at a time, but if I'm understanding the process, we have 2 4 month blocks. So, within that 4 month block, do you only extern at 1 program or do you rotate about different programs within an area? I'm just curious because (and I know I'm only a 1st year, but I'm very eager and excited) some of the programs I've been looking at only offer 1 month max externships, so if you have to do a 4 month block and you pick all programs that offer only 1 month externships, how does this work? It's very possible that I am completely wrong about this, but Jonwill and Feelgood, enlighten me please. Thanks.

You will do a four month core at one program. The university has a core affiliation agreement with a long list of programs and you will select your core at the beginning of your third year. After you have selected your core you will fill the rest of your fourth year with one month rotations at the programs of your choice. If you do a second core you can see five programs before CRIP and if you do a last core you can see seven programs before CRIP. You have plenty of time to worry about it once you get through that first year, but it it nice to start looking into the programs that you might be interested in.

You can do two cores, but that will limit the number of programs you see.

From my minor experience seeing who gets accepted to residenc programs. If you are an ambitious hard worker do your core at the program that you think is your first choice for residency. It seems that core students get picked above others because you are already so accustomed to the program.

Or pick a core that is in a large health science institute with a learning/teaching atmosphere so you can learn as much as possible.

I supposed hypothetically you could do two cores, but I don't know anyone who has.

A girl in my class actually did what would be considered a first core (4 months) at one program and then did her second core at another program. The second core was planned but she ended up liking her first rotation and really wanting the program so she stayed there for 3 more months. Obviously, not all programs would be able to accommodate a student on such short notice.

In other news, I'm back from my 5 day, 2800 mile world tour!

congrats, your brother will love MN. At least once the temp climbs back above 0 degrees.

A touch down in the first 15 seconds of the game, that was pretty impressive. Too bad it wasnt enough. Payton Manning rocks!

So you too have been warped into the Manning bandwagon just like most people in this country. I am in mourning this morning and am calling for a new QB in Chicago.

Manning didn't win that game for them. Their defense won the game. Their running backs also played well. I was kind of hoping that one of their running backs would have received the MVP of the game because I think they too played a bigger role in the victory than Manning.

sorry I missed the spread and the over under at my house by 5.
A new QB in Chicago? He won 15 games, any other team in the NFL would keep him solid. Who knows next year he may reel off the 16th and win it. Anyhow Manning got the MVP because he didn't lose the game, threw for 250+ and a Td w/ 1 int against the best D in the league. The RBs toreit up but the reality is manning kept the safeties 17-yes 17 freakin' yards off the line of scrimmage before the snap. They respected his mid game to much and the corners gave up to many skinny slants. Grossman didn't lose the game all by himself. He had to start pushing it late in the game, the O-coor playedit to safe from the half way through the 1st to the halfway point of the 4th. nonetheless my Lions and Eagles will return in force next season:laugh:

Sounds like someone has got a bad case of Manningitis.

In my opinion Manning and the colts exposed the weaknesses of the Bears defense, while the Colts defense was as impressive as they have been all post season. After the opening kickoff and Manning interception i nearly had a coronary, but everything turned out okay in the end!!! I agree with what's been said about grossman. he didn't win 15 games. The bears defense won 15 games and should have won more if they had a decent QB!

Did the Colts beat the Bears or did Grossman beat the Bears??? As poorly as the offense played, they were still in the game in the 4th quarter. And though they were only down by 5 with 12 minutes to go, Grossman decided that they needed to try and win the game on ONE PLAY! Nice! Granted, Berrian was open and it was just a poor throw.

I guess there's always next year. Screw Peyton, give Hester the MVP!

But honestly, though it was a disappointing loss, it was a great season. I have been a big Bears fan my entire life and this is the best season we have had since 85 (and 89 when we lost in the NFC Championship to the skins). At least we got the Halas trophy.

IlizaRob: Go see Dr. House. And after he tells you that you are sleeping with your sister, take two pills of "get over it" and you will be fine. See me in 2 weeks for follow-up. That will be $100.00 please. Thanks.

Hey I am from Arkansas and this can be an inflammatory topic! Nonetheless, I gave this prescription out to all my cousins and will be sending you a referral fee later.

I would expect as much from a colts fan:laugh:

I have to agree. Usually in a big game, you talk about a good quarterback having a bad game. In my opinion, Grossman is a mediocre quarterback who occasionally had a good game. On most other teams, he would be second string at best.

Grossman was #2 in the NFL in games with a pass rating over 100. That is not exactly mediocre.

The offseason should be interesting. A few QB's are eying the Bears (Garcia included) but I don't know if Smith will bite. He seems intent on having a "franchise quarterback". Rex Grossman has a lot of talent but so did Cade McNown. Sometimes, these guys just never develop. I'm thinking that Horton will give him a run for his money in the preseason and maybe even Griese but none of that matters if "Rex is the man".

One thing is for sure: If the Bears get the QB position figured out, no one will be able to play with them. Especially with Harris and Brown back on D. Maybe they should try Devin Hester at the QB position 🙂

The Bears should pick up Taylor from NU. He is predicted to go late in either the 6 or 7th round and is the opposite of Rex. He has less raw talent but very rarely makes a mistake (4 INTs last year; that was 1 INT for every 79 pass attemps). He is not flashy, but he reminds me of Drew and Peyton.

His numbers might be good, but I really think it is due to the talent playing around him making him look a lot better then he is. Maybe a better statement is he does not deliver in the clutch. He seems to get in a hurry and make poor decisions. Again, it could be from being new to the league, or maybe he just doesn't have it.

I am w/ you on the qb position. If they have a qb, they are near unbeatable (and I am not even a bears fan). 😛

How about this wonderful weather in Des Moines???

It was a beautiful 25 degrees in NYC today. sunny and a bit of wind.

I called my brother in FL to tell him of the great NYC weather. How ironic. He was enjoying 75 degree beach weather.

I explained to him it was all about expectation. If you expect -7 then 25 feels super hot.

how many of you geniuses use highlighters?

I ask because so many MD students use highlighters and really, what is that doing for them besides making them have to go out and buy more highlighters, so really just garunteeing a study break?

After I stopped using a highlighter my grades skyrocketed in college because instead of the highlighter learning the info, I started learning it:laugh:

Yea, I use highlighters. I pretty much use them so I can find things that I have studied easier. I haven't thought about whether it helps or hurts.

Are you LDS guys snowed in today or did you have to brave the elements?

No, they closed us down. This better not ruin lunch tomorrow gusty! Any news from your alum buddies up north? My bro is considering still trying to get back to Minneapolis today.

He's pretty brave. From what I have heard it is still snowing in Minneapolis. If he does head out tell him to take it slow.

I am guilty but I think it helps me read b/c I have to process whether the info is worthy of a bright yello highlight.

Thats great, I do the same. I think it help you analyze the info. Recently I moved away from highlighters and went to a multicolored retractable pen. In one pen you can choose the importance of the information, from Red>Blue>Black>Green.
Green usually being examples, however it works great.
