I had two mission presidents: the first was President Hickman (he finished 3 months after I entered the field), and President Jones was the other. How about you?
 
This is more because I didn't feel the need to post this in the DO class thread. So yea, the older peers....For PD Wattleworth yelled at the class before the test because she said she saw people switching forms and that carney saw people do it the previous test and so forth...

First off, if she saw something I hope she got their name and they should have been dealt with appropriately but I would hope and think if it was for cheating purposes that people aren't that stupid in the school to do things such as that so blatantly. Now we, and the DO class have mandatory meetings, that I'm assuming, have to do with the honor code and the consequences of cheating (stuff we've all heard before and should know). I am opposed to the meeting and the initial way this was handled and addressed to the whole class. I feel if someone is caught actually CHEATING (as in it's obvious to a faculty member) then they should be thrown out, no way around it.

With that being said, the DO thread mentions how it was a DPM guy and one person, well wattleworth said it was more. The person also stated that the DPM just wanted "their" testing form for luck or whatever I'm sure. Stupid mistake yea, but it does happen, they should have had to have a meeting with the dean and definitely scared enough to not even think about sneezing during a test for a while, although I'm sure others have their opinions.

Ok, and for the main point of this thread. The person wants to single out a class but not a person, well it is an extremely small number but I know others have been caught. Unfortunately, with that many people you want everyone to be honest but you can't get everybody to be all the time. I think it is poor form to cheat in any sort of medical school. I don't think cheating here or there will necessarily hurt your patient in the basic science courses, as many like to state, BUT it is WRONG and NO ONE should be doing it at all, we are striving for higher education and are going to school to help fellow humans, with that we have the responsibility of being held to higher moral and ethical standards, that includes absolutely NO CHEATING. That and if you cheat once you will probably do it again, and everything does build on itself so you're better off learning it.

Ok, I'm done with my rant now.

Was the person switching test forms before a test?
 
From my knowledge, yes that is what they did, it wasn't meant to be cheating but the person made a mistake and apologized (all from what I heard, I can't say this is definitely the truth which makes me slightly reluctant to post it).

However, I guess the meeting is about more than this instance and deals with other things such as people having their computers open during ethics classes and such with non class material on the screens etc.

Yea, I was told by a friend in the DO class that someone sat down in a "B" row and had always had luck taking the form "A" test so they simply switched it with one in the next row over. It seems innocent enough although they shouldn't have done it for obvious reasons.

There is actually a lot of history behind this and Dr. W has been dealing with a lot of less than professional behavior over the last few years. Unfortunately, you guys caught the culmination of her anger today.

Ah, first year drama. You gotta love it.
 
I'm sorry, but this is complete BS. The ONLY reason for switching around tests from my point of view is for cheating. Why would you otherwise? If you sit in a "B" row and don't want to be there, get the hell up and sit in an "A" row. FYI, they don't do A and B rows, they alternate A and B forms, so with that being said, the ONLY reason for switching is for cheating. This makes our class look like a bunch of Jack Asses now, thanks a lot to the students who didn't prepare for this test, who show moral and ethical indecency. They should be booted, no if's, and's, or but's. And if it was DPM's, then crap, that just makes us look that much worse, especially since it's supposed to occur at "the best school." This royally pisses me off and there is absolutely NO excuse for it. I hope those students get what is coming to them, I honestly do because they show such little respect for everyone else there. My class is now blacklisted forever for this due to a few people who are completely stupid. In case you don't know, I'm really pissed off about this, COMPLETELY CARELESS AND THOUGHTLESS.

I would not sweat it. We had people get up and switch seats b/c they always took form A or B. I don't think that this incident was malicious, so I think you reaction premature. Wait to see what happens, just like I told Jonwill when he swallowed a quater "This too will pass."

According to my sources, I really don't think there was any mal intent. There was just poor judgement. In retrospect, I'm sure the person would have just got up and switched seats. Unfortunately, they didn't think it through and did something hasty. In test taking the first few years, a lot of superstition is involved. I knew people in my class who would make sure they got Test A or Test B because "they always got that form and did well". There was another guy who always wore a suit because he swore it made him do better. I could go on but maybe we can just make a thread for "Test Taking Superstition".
 
I know, I probably over reacted, but you gotta admit it looks bad. From my perspective this is what went on: 2 friends sat next to each other and realized that test A and test B were next to each other so one of them switches test B with a test A next to him so that the 2 people sitting next to each other can have test A and test A next to each other i.e. to look off each others tests. I know this probably isn't the scenario, but this is med school, this sort of thing shouldn't be happening. We've all made poor decisions in the past or had a momentary lack of judgement. Now Dean Reed called an emergency meeting w/ the whole 1st year D.O. class today at noon and the DPM class has one w/ Yoho on Monday at noon. No one is implicated in this as far as I know (meaning no one specific will be getting in trouble for this), but because of this all of our tests now will be video taped. Also, the test switching happened in the 1st PD test and Carney saw it then too. So we have 2 seperate incidents of this going on. I just think the people involved are stupid and if something comes of it to them, then that's that, but we all (the 2010 D.O and DPM classes) are now being watched like a hawk for a few peoples actions.

All the classes at NYCPM are video taped along with the hall ways. there is video survalance all over the school.

There have been incidents of cheating and he said she said issues. Rarely is some one actually found at fault.

So do not think that the video will even solve anything.

Well, this has been blown way out of proportion b/c 2 DOs were caught cheating earlier in the year. I heard today that the student that switch test forms prior to the test starting was not even a DPM. Again, I heard, I cannot confirm this as a fact.

it usually is either blown way out of proportion or ignored.

I used to do what ever I could (short of cheating) to get the A exam because the questions were not scrambled as in the B and successive copies. The questions on the A exam would typically follow in order with how the topics were covered in class which makes recall easier.
 
Typically our tests are arranged with form A and B alternating in the rows. From that each test usually has separate sections for the various lecturers so say Ms X lectured for 3 lectures, all of her questions are in one spot and so forth.

The forms then have these lecturers sections in different orders and then the groups from the separate sections flow in order but are pieced together separately (so usually form A COULD be easier to follow depending on how one learned). Again, this is all just the typical way.

I took off the DO thing in my previous thread as I don't want to spread stuff like that around such as some are saying it was a DPM that switched forms(although there were at least a few that did so I think Feelgood and others could both be correct). The main reason I believe it is being blown out of proportion is due to the fact that we were all yelled at right before we took our exam, which, for some, was quite disturbing.

I can understand where both parties are coming from but switching test forms if not for cheating is just not thinking, and it looks VERY suspicious. I think the instructor yelled at the class because she was genuinely upset and disappointed and probably would have handled it differently if some time passed.

This is not in a pod school, but my undergrad university has cameras in one testing center (the other 3 don't, I don't know why). A younger student (sophmore) in my program was caught cheating on a test. They saw it happening on the monitor, a test monitor went into the room and pointed at her for the camera, and then they busted her. The video evidence was conclusive, and she was expelled from the universtiy.
Word got around, and I would guess if anyone else was thinking of cheating, they might not after that.

I just wanted to clarify that I am the guy who knows a DPM who innocently switched the test forms. Wattleworth knows. They apologized. It's cool. Won't happen again.

Wattleworth also said that there is more going on than just that. I'm sure that this has happened more than once, and that we are going to get a chewing about more than one thing this week. Should be fun.

Really though, Whatever Dean Reed says, if you aren't the one doing the stuff then just brush it off and sit through it. I doubt there will be anything that life altering.

I just have a quick question about health insurance. I was wondering if any of you purchased the insurance provided through the school. Also i was wondering if any of you purchased other insurance and if so with whom. Any feedback on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a significant other that is working, your health insurance may be cheaper through their work.

If you have kids and a wife that is planning on being a stay at home mom, many of the students have Medicaid for insurance.

If you are single, just get the school insurance b/c it is the easiest and cheapest option.

That's my advice
 
actually you can get a much better deal than the school plan offered through blue cross. I get my insurance through my wife, but one of the guys in my class called blue cross and didn't mention he was a student. He got a much cheaper rate. I would suggest calling a few health insurance providers and geting a quote before buying the school plan.

Interesting. This just reinforces my hatred of insurance companies.
 
I couldn't agree more. The worst part is that the school knows students could get a cheaper rate outside of the plan, but cannot tell them that because of the agreement they have w/ blue cross. doesn't seem right. by the way have you taken off for your first rotation yet?
 
I just received a packet from DMU stating that incoming students can only waive the university plan if they are on a parents, spouses, or government issued insurance plan. It also states that after your first year you can get an independant plan but not the first year. What are your thoughts on this?

I would ignore it. Student services has 3 women who are more worried about selling things on ebay than working for the students. The student service department has been one of very few faults with DMU. They aren't really there to serve the students.
 
I totally agree w/feelgood at the end of the day all they really care about is that you are covered. Go ahead and get the deal that is best for you. Once you have purchased a plan they definitely not make you change it and believe me once you realize how much you are spending over the next four years every little bit you can save adds up.

I just wrapped up week one at Waterloo and it went pretty well. On day two we had a patient in the ER w/10 bags of cocaine in his stomach. I didn't expect to see anything like that until I came up to visit you in Detroit! Already had more hands on surgery than in most of my third year though and I'm loving it.
