Cheapest route from boston is to fly into omaha and rent a car. i realize that is pathetic, but des moines has a piss poor excuse for an airport. Normally I'm the last person to blast Iowa, but traveling via plane is crap in this state. Most people i know avoid the des moines airport at all costs, even the military.

anyone planning on going to a Hawkeye game this Fall? As long as they are not playing the Badgers I'll root for them. Tailgate party anyone?

Lisi the iowa vs iowa state game is in ames, so if you are near, let us know on this site and we will meet and get hammered.

“ We don't have the margin of error in Iowa. We're not the better-known school. We just can't afford to take things for granted. It never has been that kind of place, and it never will be. It's not supposed to be easy there." ”

hey guys, don't mean to interrupt the party with a serious question.......

I am currently an OMS-II at Nova Southeastern. My wish is to transfer to DMU after this year, and start the rotational years at DMU.

My reasons for doing so is that I am from Iowa, and I want to eventually practice somewhere in the midwest. I like the fact that DMU is more flexible in terms of where you can rotate, giving you exposure to more areas. Here in florida we are stuck at a core hospital for 2 years with only 3 months of electives. I believe if I am exposed to that area I will more likely find a place that I like for residency. Also other reasons are that my brother is moving to West Des Moines and starting in a private practice. I would like to be closer to my brother and my parents(who live in Ames).

I am in the process of applying right now. My main concern is that my reasons are not sufficient for wanting to transfer, and obviously i don't want to lie about something like a death in the family or whatever.

My other concern is that originally I chose to go to NSU over DMU when applying to med school, so they may look down on the fact that I want to come back there.

So basically if any of you have advice on how to go about persuading admissions that I want to be there, or my chances of transferring, please let me know...thanks, good luck with school.

One last thing..........is it tough to get in contact with your dean?? I've talked to Gina at the admissions office, who only really told me about the process, do you guys recommend anyone else I can talk to??

There is an abbreviation in med school called "SOL" buddy. however, best of luck.

the game is september 10th I believe

To the guy who wants to transfer............good luck, I know a student who went from DO to MD based solely on his disbelief in cranial, but I've never heard of anyone being able to transfer schools because they decided they liked the other school's rotation schedule......but if I've learned one thing money rules all, and I"m sure DMU would enjoy your $30,000+ for tuition the next two years, so who knows....

The des moines airport in and of itself is not bad, its just a pain in the ass cause you have to stop at like 3 different airports to get anywhere......

Bernard are you back in town, what/where are you doing?

GO HAWKS!!

We had one go to Univ of Neb or Creighton from our class, but she had a very good reason.

Less then two weeks to go before we start clinicals, need to pickle my liver while I still can.

Sorry did'nt read the post for the guy who wanted to transfer correctly. I'd look on the website for the number for Dr. Reed.

I think that I met the "transfer guy" when I interviewed at NOVA. Interesting.....

It is .25 beer night and .50 rum and cokes at mickey's tonight..................I love it when I don't have a job, or class, and can go out on wednesday with no responsibilities except waking up to urinate and defecate............

WHEN DO WE GET LOAN MONEY????

I'm sick of working!

don't know about the gay part but my credit card bill is a fricking whopper. Thanks student loans! Just took the USMLE today. Wow, that blew. In opposition to many others, I actually found the COMLEX more striaght forward and useful. I felt like with the USMLE I was reading a lot of superfluous info and then they would ask me a stupid side track question.

For example, they would give me all of this clinical info and then ask me on what part of the rib do I insert my chest tube and what runs through there. Couldn't they have just asked me that to begin with? Or they would give me all of these lab values and then ask me something where it didn't matter if I knew the lab values or not. I guess I felt better coming out of the COMLEX than I did the USMLE...

Exactly, anyways, I'm not really cut out for construction. Although I'm pretty good at telling people what to do.

Sidenote: Are NOVA students reading this thread? If so, why since we don't usually make much sense?

Thanks for the responses regarding my travel to Des Moines for an interview! I am very excited.

I've asked enough questions already, but I do have another. Are there many students that are "older", married, and/or with small children? Do spouses seem to be able to find work readily? My wife is an accountant (controller), with 10+ years of experience. In your humble opinions, would she be able to get something in the greater DSM area?

Thanks again folks, I am very excited to be interviewing at DMU.

What is considered a decent Biochemistry average test score for a first year DO
student at DMU?

I think our class (07) average starting age was 25, and the majority had spouses, some had kids already, and quite a few had kids during our first two years. I think she would be fine finding a job around des moines, there are quite a few fairly nice sized town's within 45 minutes of des moines if all else fails.

Good luck

that is a loaded question our entire class averages were upper 80%, but there were plenty who got high 90's and plenty who got exactly 70..........like astro said nobody is going to ask you at interviews about your 1st year biochem grade, just pass.................

peds Sub Intership...............if you are interested in peds you do that fourth year, it's like a pre-internship so places you are interested in treat you like you are staff and you can kiss a lot of ass and match with them

For those looking at rotation spots concerning residency.... what are you looking for in a program? I've been looking at the FREIDA website and at residency sites and was wondering what you guys think is a good work schedule for a resident, say for general practices like FP, IM, or Peds? What else do you guys look at?

Sorry to interrupt the class bonding time, I just had a quick question.

Does anyone on here know Jim Kuderer? I met him when we were studying in Italy in 2004 and I think he's now at DMU. Pretty sure he'd be MS-II this year. I've unfortunately lost touch with him and would like to see how he's doing.

Anyway, I'm just waiting to get an interview at DMU. I know I'll rock it if I get an invitation! Everything about that place is the bomb, definitely on the top of my list. I hope to see you there next year.

Ok, take 'er easy... and if she's easy, take 'er again-

Schedule wish I would say any program that tries to adhere to 80 hours a week is good. Call every 4th night is probably one of the best schedules, 3 is kind of an ass kicker from what I hear. I look at location, how many people have gone on to do a fellowship and what fellowship they did, how many "big names" are associated with the program, do they let you moonlight, and is there an opportunity in that community after you finish to have a successful private practice or join up with one that is already established. When you go to interview talk to the residents, the places where the residents are happy you can't go wrong with!

Oh and if there are a lot of hot residents, docs, nurses, and etc, but I am assuming you had that at the top of your list😉

Name doesn't sound familiar, but do go off of me I know like 3 people in my class..........good luck

Wouldn't he be a 2008 though and not a 2007?

Yes, and I also look for if I get free meals and if the parking sucks... I also like a good cup of coffee and a back rub, not too much to ask I hope.

Cream, are you planning on staying in IA?

that depends...........I want to do neurosurgery, but board scores weren't high enough to make me a "lock-in". I will apply in michigan and east coast, probably a few west coast schools too. If I decide not to do that, then I'm thinking general surgery and mercy is fairly high on my list, but mt clemens is too. I like IA because low cost of living, and it's pretty friendly. I guess since I am very single, and have no real attachments anywhere (family here in iowa but they can survive if I move) I will go wherever I can do what I want and get trained well. Who knows, by next year maybe I'll just want to do peds or ER..............You looking in Ohio??

The main reason keeping me in iowa for the rest of my loan (other than loan repayment) is the opportunity to vote KIRK FERENTZ into national office after he passes his coaching duties off to his son.

What can i say? I really like peanut butter and chocolate. I had a very awkward dream about a girl who works for our school last night...my parents were involved, whole nine yards.

I just assumed everyone would know that you need to stay in iowa for kirk ferentz..................by the way astro turns out I know a hot chick that is friends with a hot chick WHO DATES DREW TATE.............I know I told her to let him know he is the greatest thing at the U of Iowa since since exctasy and rohipnol combined............that being said if you put chocolate and peanut butter on someone who works for our school and your parents videotape it is not a dream.....its what you did last thursday night.........faaaaaaaaagggggggg

Is it just me or does anyone else REALLY not want to start rotations?

I definately do not want my summer vacation to end.... Actually I am looking at east coast residencies, but have no clue for what yet. Right now it could be anything from FP, IM, IM + specialty, anesthiology, and ob/gyn.....

I'm excited to start rotations. A whole new city and minimal homework appeals to me.

If you guys need some cheap dress clothes (men), go to JC Penny. I realize their shirts don't have a gay horse on them, but they are totally wrinkle free and only $16 per shirt right now. they also have cheap pants. my friend starting wearing their clothes b/c they don't require any ironing and look just like other name brands according to his girlfriend and soon to be wife. i went their today and bought a few long sleeve shirts, and they fit great too. Big necks but narron in the stomach region...which hopefully is something i continue to look for after eating hospital food for a while.

You all are post ******... over 3300 and counting..damn dont you guys study anymore? No wait dont tell me I'll just cry myself to sleep if you do. GI SUCKS MAJOR RECTUM

Has anybody heard from Amy from LA? Did she make it to Sandusky before Katrina?

I'll have to ask Angela befcause she is her roommate here in Sadnusky and we are suppposed to start rotations on Tuesday....

I too am looking forward to actually doing something constructive with my time besides running and playing ps2. I know we all got Ray's email so hopefully Amy is ok too.......I know some people who moved to mt. clemens already and they said that you get an apartment building, so that should be nice. I also spent $400 on books today, yay rotations 😉 that wink was for you astro

It's great to live in Mason City. Beyond he specific lack of Hurricaines, there is also a nice sleepy small town feel to the place. I have to go on the record as saying this is NOT that different from where I grew up. A few fundamental differences (corn, not shrimp; fields, not swamp; etc), but overall the feeling is the same.

I'm going to try and review enough OB/GYN so that on Tuesday I don't end up totally clueless as I sit in a corner trying to not see anything. (JK)

I'm actually a little worried that I won't be able to "do" as much due to my # of Y chromosomes. Hell, worse comes to worst, I'll just see if there are any spots in housekeeping for a well qualified swabbie! I'm good at that!!!

BTW, I'm GLAD they're trucking people out of Louisiana that feel it's "OK" to shoot at Search and Rescue teams. 'nuff said

Bernard I meant to ask you if that was a state habit, to shoot at people trying to help you............IT SEEMS SORTA FRENCH TO ME

But I am glad you are safe, I love you, and two days until the end of all things..........

We love you ray and hope you and yours are okay. By the way, I always hold your Y chromosome against you, but just your Y chromosome in particular. In fact I wish my X chromosome would kick your Y chromosomes butt, but due to the restraining order, I don't think that is a good idea.
