I just got my scores over the weekend and I took em July 27th! I did a little better than step I. I'm putting my money on two places so far but only just recently applied, so zero interviews yet as well. I don't think my whole application has been downloaded as of yet.

Not a new "b!tch," but a "b!tch" nonetheless...

I'm on peds neurology this week. I'm standing call with the ward for exposure to residents and interns so they'll know me. I interview with the director and chief resident my last week here.

So this 2nd year I'm on call with is writing orders. I look over her shoulder as she does a few, then she stops looks up at me and asks, "Do you know how to dose meds?"

I say (stupidly), "Yes. I was a pharmacy tech. I can dose meds by weight and BSA."

She asks, "What's the dose for iron?"

I say, "How much do they weigh? It's 3-6mg/kg."

She asks, "What are we treating?"

I say, "Iron Deficiency Anemia." This was true since that's all they talked about at report.

She says, "Are you sure?"

I say, "Well who are we talking about?"

"Room 3"

"Who is that? I don't even know who we're talking about"

"You were in report."

"Yes, but I still don't know which patient you're talking about."

"Well...."

So I look, it's patient BLAH, with Iron Deficiency Anemia. The dose per my electronic copy of Harriet Lane is 3-6 mg/kg. I say again, "It's 3-6mg/kg."

"So how much are you going to give?"

"Their weight times 3-6mg/kg."

"Isn't it based on age?"

"Lemme check."

She then says, "If you want to know, always check the bible" as she holds up the Harriet Lane.

She wanders away to write her order as I scratch my head and try to figure out what the hell she was trying to "teach" me.

I chase her down and say, "So how much did you give?"

She says, "4mg/kg."

I say, "How'd you pick that?"

"That's what they said."

"That's what who said?"

"The Harriet Lane and the Resident."

"How'd you pick 4 versus 3 or 5 or 6?"

"They just said 4."

I was tired of talking about weight based dosing to Laurel or Hardy or whoever she was impersonating so I let it drop.

During the night tonight she's consistently asked me "Do you have any questions?" Then when I do she says, "I don't know that...that's an interesting question." The I look it up myself...which I would have done even without her asking me, "So do you have any questions?"

WTF, mate?

I guess she really wants to teach me something, but it appears she only wants to teach me things I already know. I need to forget some things so I can help her to feel good about being a resident I guess.

Luckily the senior resident on is Dr Ho, DO. She's no Jane, but she is sane...in the brain...sugar cane....not to blame...I got GAME!

Got 7 interview offers....FP rules. Now if only Radiology programs would get on the ball I can start picking some dates. How's the hunt for residency for everybody? COMLEX part II next Wednesday.....and I stopped caring last year so it could be a fun one.........son of a........

Starting ER on Monday.....time to play the "I didn't do it" game.....If people didn't come in to the ER holding their own body parts, I might like ER more.

Everybody get the email?

Looks like mommy and daddy are not to happy with us naughty little kids.

I'm so sick of this. Maybe if dmu did anything for us during 3rd or 4th year, I'd be more likely to do something for them. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.

I agree with cuthbert (what book is that name from? I know i've read it), DMU essentially throws us to the wolves and then sends us emails saying we haven't filled out their worthless patient logs. I like how they don't bring people before spec for threatening other students or cheating, but this is apparently worthwhile.

Dejanimal, solid work on 7 interviews! I currently have......0. Granted I just got all my stuff in a few days ago but still, pins and needles. I too am taking comlex on wed. I have to say my studying has not been too impressive so far. Just. Don't. Care. Anymore.

Keep in contact y'all. Ray, sounds like you are having fun. Too bad about the AT, I was thinking about doing a leg with you.

BTW, beerfest was freakin hilarious. Big Ups to Broken Lizard.

Did anybody else think there was a creepy pleasure that he was taking while writing that email to us about logs? I don't want to get carried away on SDN but man.......I can just picture him typing it.....with one hand......well there go my chances for graduation...gotta change my name.

Beerfest was great.....go see the Protector with Tony Jaaaaaa. So many bones broken it's funny. Jane and I were the only ones in the theater and were laughing it was so brutal.

Ha! Yeah, you could tell he blew it when he mentioned reporting us all to SPEC! "I could send a number of you to SPEC today for your lack of patient logs, (DAH! DAAAAHHHHH!)"

...Have I taken this too far? I'm going to go vomit.

"Cuthbert" is from King's Dark Tower series.

Pretty soon we'll get another email, telling us not to complain on SDN.

Zero interviews for me, jerks. And all I wanna do is be thier slave for years. Had my stuff in day one too.

I was talking to my advisor a while back, and she says she reads this forum all the time. So Im sure our illustrious dean of clinical years does too. Oh, and when I go out on interviews, and only have one log for that day.. do I not pass my rotation?... Hmmm. I guess I'll have to make stuff up then.

Ha, go ahead and try and figure out who I am... wait, maybe I should change my screen name. 😕

oh, this was all a joke (in case your watching... you know who you are)

I knew I recognized that character name. Nice reference. I loved those books, didn't like the ending of the series. Although king puts in the disclaimer that he hates writing endings and sucks at it. I got an email from a california program saying, "we got your application" no invite or rejection. That's like when you tell someone you love them and they say "thats nice" (like at my house every night). That letter from whats his name was very malicious. Unlike other people who claim they read the logs, I actually think he sits down and reads them. Miss you guys! Keep posting interview and comlex stuff! and random crap too.

No interviews here yet. But Peoria did the same thing to me, "We have your application, but it has not yet been reviewed by the DME." ...OK...
I still have one more letter of rec to get in yet, but it sounds like some people are getting interviews without all of them. Just ok'ed my dean's letter today.

I'm still waiting for Peoria's interview. That's one both of us want. They have a solid Radiology program and FP program. Still waiting to approve my Dean's letter. They're probably just making sure they've used as many profane terms as possible about me.

If OB dominates this COMLEX for me....i'm done. Stupid vaginal bleeding. C-SECTIONS FOR ALL!!!!!

The Chinese zodiac says I'm a "rabbit." It also says, I'm the luckiest of signs.

This is undeniably true.

It is also true that the kind of luck I have should come with benzodiazepines.

I was talking with my Pediatric Neurology preceptor on Wednesday, and getting on about the whole career thing when she mentioned that she was the assistant program director. Assistant Program Director for NMCSD's Pediatric Residency program.

I've been rotating for a week with her, presenting peds neuro cases (everything from seizures, adhd, migraines to prader willi, new onset depression complicating other diagnoses.... And doing OK I thought...but I was surprised when I found out she was the #2.

So I've been on an "interview rotation" afterall...even if DMU isn't giving credit.

I think that's funny: no credit, but rotate in every Peds area, stand call 2 nights a week, and interview with the residency heads....

Dartos is also a rabbit, but that's more his lovemaking style.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Actually I am the year of the rooster. I understand the confusion as my winky looks exactly like a rabbits foot. I got my first interview today!!!! University of Maryland, not my top choice but it's nice to get one all the same. Big D, I hope you guys get your top choice, but if not it would be fun if we were all in Indy together. I took Nat and Brady out on the boat today, maybe the last trip of the season. Couple largemouth and a decent size northern pike. It aint easy catching fish with a little person jumping up and down, throwing rocks in the water and dropping poles over the side of the boat. And thats just natalie.

If we interview during the week are we going to get in trouble for not logging patients for a day? If so that's stupid.

I plan on missing as many days as possible for interviews and hope I get emails from school saying I haven't "SINKED" all 5 days for the week. I can't wait til next month. I only have to do 15 shifts for ER.....that should get the clinical affairs team on my case.

If you go to UMD (DMU's Bizzaro world equivalent), and I go to Bethesda....that means I can actually see my love child again. JK

Is he still asking for Tobasco sauce on his eggs?

Tell me for reference on interviews: (The Navy works differently since it's a smaller number of people ~300, and even fewer spots ~250.) Do you have to interview multiple times for each of your programs? Bethesda wants 6 interviews. San Diego, only 2. I'm not sure about Portsmouth yet since I haven't made it down there.

No you're right, he's your kid. Now where is our child support check? Baby needs a new pair of iPod.
I'm pretty sure that in the civvy world only one interview is required. three days till comlex. How much OMM was on that? Was it all chapmans and viscerosomatics? Any treatment questions?

Sooooooo ready to have this over with.

Brush up on the cranial and chapman's....but you already knew that.

What's really going to cook your noodle later is whether or not you would have studied at all if I hadn't said anything.

Just remember, there is no spoon.

Thanks playa!

Went over to kat and dans place for some backyard bbq. Big ups, excellent ribs. Long story short Kat, Dan and I (mostly Dan and I) ended up in a triple kiss. Sending the tape in to Bi's gone wild.

Dmack and Portier...my long, lost nemises (spelling). I realized today i took a SDN vacation in place of myspace and setting up a Gmail account. I don't know what i was thinking. I don't recommend doing an SICU Sub-I at Henry Ford Main your 4th year: way too much work, call, and ventillatory machines. This is hardcore medicine + surgery: i never realized they went together. It's too bad DMU advisors read this blog...I used to think people in those positions had a better life than sitting on the computer all day and checking a student-written blog. furthermore, it aggrevates me when we have free riders on here all the time, always reading and never adding anything to the mix. reminds me of farmers in Iowa: vote democrat to get money for a worthless crop and contaminating ground water with millions of gallons of hog crap and nasty chemicals....but then turning around and being stupid-conservative when it comes to local school and roads.

Either way, good week to be a hawkeye. Frenchie, I love you! Cremaster...I'll be chillin with you when iowa comes to show Mary Sue Coleman (Ex-president of the univ of iowa and now president of Michigan) why Ann Arbor truly is a dirty, dirty, tramp. I think i want to get drunk when we graduate! though i must thank detroit for giving us iowa's new top receiver.

Anyone else like trauma surgery? I think it's pretty fun here in detroit. I met this girl from sioux falls who proved i am not actually a man-lover. sorry frenchie...it was all just a front.

I met this girl from sioux falls who proved i am not actually a man-lover. sorry frenchie...it was all just a front.

So when we cuddled naked, that was a front?

When we got married in Massachewsits, that was a front?

When I got "Astroglide, my b!tch" tatooed on my ass, that was a front?

I think someone is confused, and he's not wearing my clothes...at least no tonight....astro, give back my thong with the plug.

😍

Portier, you still need to return my panties with the vibrating butterfly on them. And clean, please!!

What the hell are Chapman's points? Son of a......I think i'm as ready as I'll be for this COMLEX thing. Peoria's a nice place.....our ER educator is a fighter on the side and could kick my ass by flexing, he's a good guy though. Already have ten interviews to pick from.....and the Mrs. got a few as well so now I can schedule some in the same city.

One of the ER docs is having a journal club at his farm complete with a fireworks show and hog/goat roast. He couldn't find anybody to roast for him so he asked the new crop of students if anybody knew how to roast a pig....I told him it's my people's 3rd national sport next to soccer and death. Nothing like throwing a live animal in a fire and eating it several hours later. HOW ABOUT THOSE BEARS! REX GROSSMAN IS GOD....for now.

d to the mak

So, since the military match goes early, my Dean's letter was sent to me today for a look over. They're going to send it to ERAS soon since we have to have all our documents by November.

Mostly no big surprises on there, I know about my class rank, I know what activities and things I was in.

The slug in the gut was an eval. I got 4's and 5's on all my rotations with one notable 3. And (GET THIS) the 3 is from my Pediatric Hematology Oncology rotation. My chosen fellowship....ugh.

"Enthusiastic with patient contact and interaction. Recommend he work on knowledge base in general peds. Also, should be more proactive with initiating patient care encounter. Enjoyable to work with."

I can't speak to my knowledge fund...I do need to learn more.... but "Be more proactive?" There were like 2 med students, 2 fellows and an intern on the service at one time....not to mention 2-3 staff. In a clinic...with maybe 2 patients an hour. I shoulda' gone and recruited patients for the clinic so I could see them.

What makes it weirder is that the doc is writing me a letter of recommendation. I am both average and worth recommending? In any case, it made me a little sad. Well, more than a little sad.

What's cool is how well this non-rotation rotation is going. I'm getting experience on the peds ward, in NICU, I'm scrubbing s few Peds Surgery cases, and getting fairly good with Peds Neuro... (Lessons form Peds Neuro: Get times, dates, and durations for everything. Get doses for each med, how often, when they take them......essentially be so anal retentive that Dr Wattleworth would say, "Now that's just CRAZY!"

Good on ya, DMAK.....everyone wants you!

What was this year's COMLEX step 1 pass rate at DMU? Also, what is your school's policy toward the COmlEX as far as attempts and starting rotations?

WHOOOOOOO!!!! Comlex 2 is done! It was bout what I was expecting. Come on pass! Long time no talk Astro. Sup biatch? I am sick of rotations, just want to be done with random crap. Ray, sorry to hear that everyone hates you, I thought it was just me. You could always console yourself knowing that my wife makes me talk with a french accent and calls me ray in the boudior. Anyone know what a pass on step 2 is?

Hog roast YUM!!!! The only thing better is eating something you just killed yourself. I prefer the deadliest game of all, cajuns.

Crazy A-holes. I am now on my last 3 days of neurosurgery, and then its two weeks off with a trip to Europe with the gf. I then start ER. I applied to 9 NS residencies and have gotten 1 official invite and 2 "unofficial" ones. So we'll see what happens. How long does it take to get step II scores back 6 or 12 weeks? I wish everybody luck with interviews and only 8 more months till we meet back in Des Moines for our own Beerfest.......

NO MORE TESTS.......I feel like every 2-3 months there's another step I have to take. COMLEX II.....most random test ever. 87y/o female with fatigue...what is her diagnosis? WHA????? I was tempted to put comments after some questions along the lines of:

Comment Question #1: Seriously? And why is it 1000 degrees in here?

Comment Question #52: What the hell is a prolotecoscoperotomy?

Comment Question #69: Did you have to show a diseased vagina on question 69? Come on...

Comment Question #112: That could have been in spanish and I still wouldn't know what you're getting at.

Comment Question #113: Wait, that was spanish...my bad.

Comment Question #187: Must stop banging head.....starting to bleed.

Comment Question #256: Must find blunt object and with last remaining strength, bludgeon self. Moderator reminds me of Mr. Rogers....I'm sad now.

Comment Question #300: Comment on Exhibit: Is that a chest x-ray of a moose? What are those horns?

Comment Question #345: I'm NOT a freaking lawyer dinguses.

Comment Question #400: Fifth graders should not be allowed to write questions for the COMLEX anymore. Oh...and please let me pass.

Did anybody else find their Dean's letter strangely long and repetitive? I thought they'd be like, 1-2 page blurbs, but this is practically a novel. And there's little on there that's not already in my application. But it is nice to have the clinical eval stuff on there and they even went so far as to talk about my pre-med life. Makes me feel a little paranoid.

So I got this interview for a allo transitional year in Indianapolis, and they have this cool scheduling system where you go online and you can see everybody else who's going to interview there. Everybody's going into rads, gas, ophtho, rad onc etc...and they're all from these bigshot universities...let's just say I'm a little --> :scared: And on top of that, the man has 12 interviews...compared to my one radiology and one TY. Super :scared: But from what others have said last year, I probably won't expect much more till October.

Anybody know if our Dean's letter is actually going to be uploaded and available to download by programs after we OK them? I thought they all had to be released on November 1. Or is that the deadline for the schools?

It's so great that everyone is posting again! Love you guys. Especially Portier 😉 . That test was random. No one wants to look at the picture of a sexually abused 6 yr olds vag exam that early in the morning. Did you get the crazy super long radiologist law question? J-ho, I think you are right about waiting till at least october. All the peeps on the psych board are saying interview season hasn't gotten into full swing at all yet. Cream master, where in europe are you and the gf going? May I recommend Dmaks hometown of Yugoslavkazakkistanoslovakapest?

On a side note, Brady is awesome. He won't play t-ball anymore, he likes to play like, actual baseball. Between natalie and I we probably throw the ball to him for 2 hours every day. The kid loves baseball. He will take anything that remotely resembles a bat and any ball and just start playing. The other day I was throwing a super ball to him and he was swinging at it with the sheath from his toy sword. He also loves candy! Halloween is going to freaking blow his mind. I am going to start grooming him to be an evil henchman for when Dejan and Janes kid takes over the world. Think about it, her brain, his giant dong.......game over man, game over

Damm, got my first rejection letter. Freakn' university of New Mexico rejected me because I only took the COMLEX. Way I figure, those aholes are anti-DO. If they wouldn't take my COMLEX grade, it wouldn't matter how well I did on the USMLE, they just dont want "our kind". At least a few other places are going to let me in.

Karen Rankin told me that our Deans letter gets uploaded as soon as we accept it. I don't know about that cause I accepted mine and its not on ERAS

So, I have a measly 2 interview invites so far, and got another one for a prelim med year at UMKC. And guess what, they only offer 1...ONE...date for an interview, and it just so happens to be on the same date as my TY interview in Indianapolis. Hopefully they'll let me interview when I'm actually in Kansas City in December.

You know what's surprisingly fun? Doing testicular ultrasounds. Haha. Slippery balls.

No deans letter yet, but then again, one of my evals still isn't in yet and it's from a site in another state.

Astro:
We just came back from Germany/Austria and it was awesome. We rented a car and drove around the country. Would recommend to anyone, even if they don't speak German.

Interviews:
0, but I don't think my application is complete yet.

Just finished a long day.......man. I saw five total patients in the ER over a period of seven hours...and this was after five hours of the weekly ER conference. Everywhere I go people say, "It's usually not like this" which leads me to believe I heal just be being present at the hospital. Nobody gets sick when I'm there. Some people call it a white cloud......I call it healing by intimidation.....you don't want to get sick by me cause I'll probably make you more sick. I'm tired......off to bed...got the 6:30 AM shift tomorrow.....woooooooo.

Saw a nurse today I used to pharm tech for when I was enlisted.

Strangely enough she's hotter than I remember...👍 👍 👍 :meanie:

I still haven't gotten my Deans letter! Only one interview offer so far. Lucky, if your looking for some practice on testicular manipulation....my balls are at your service. Fortunately, as ray can tell you, theres quite a bit of friction enhancement.

Someone sent a PM to me addressed as Dr. Vader, I thought that was hilarious.

I had an interview at cook county for an internship, which was supposed to be linked to neurosurgery, but it is no longer showing up as neurosurgery. I don't think I am going to interview if they aren't doing it as a linked internship. My dean's letter is in and all my stuff has been uploaded. The programs I talked to told me that I would be interviewed in late november early decemeber even though there hasn't been an "official invite". I freaking got to take out necrotic dead brain from an MCA stroke that had abscesses in it. We bovi'd the hell out of it and just cut with scissors and scalpled the rest, it was sweet. We did an entire hemispherectomy basically. I am going on a 7 day cruise around Spain, France, Italy I believe. I don't even know I'm going with the gf and I don't care it is just going to be nice to not have to get up at 4am for a while and to not be stuck in the hospital until 9 or 10 at night🙂 Go freaking hawks bitches.

I just got my letter today. I'm guessing they militarially alphabetize.

I'm on path now, it's actually not bad. No patients, no rounds. Very laid back atmosphere. I don't hate looking in a microscope as much as I thought I would. Kind of cool. I'm not switching, but I can see why people would like it. Can't. Stop. Fishing. WINTER SUUUUUUUCKS! DMAK, we need to settle in the south (the women can come too) so we can fish 365 days a year.

quit calling it fishing and say what it really is....................gay ass sex

we've had almost 72,000 views..........pretty good for a little thread started for fun and games🙂

OMG....

Doing Peds Neurology I haven't seen the inside of kid's heads first hand, but I've seen plenty of neurological deficits and devastation....and head films that are repugnant.

There was an anoxic brain injury child who was born overseas....her entire brain is essentially gone and she exists with a vent....I looked at the film and all she has is brain stem and CSF.

Yesterday there was a kid with shaken baby syndrome. I immediately thought of calling a few guys I know who still take "odd jobs" for "extra money" to go visit dad. The kid was cortically blind, asymetrically spastic, rigid, cloinic, had infantile spasms and hadn't made one milestone past 1 month old (at 24 months).

I'm also scrubbing the odd peds surg cases....doing a nissen on a 3 week old is hard to visualize and INTENSE.

Hey, everyone go to the post about hot chicks being your omm partner, good for a laugh at how worked up some people can get.
Dejan, wish you were there for the gay a$$ sex, I mean fishing today. Ten northern pike in 4 hours, mostly between 2-3 feet long. 😎

Portier, is that like the time you offered to give me an "odd job for money"?

I'm digging my own lake in my sister's back yard now and will stock it with a bunch of dead fish so I can somewhat reply to your fishing tauntery. Ten northern??? That's it??? I caught 87 gulf shrimp, 24 salmon steaks, and like 10,000 baby scallops......take that.......BURN!

Portier, is that like the time you offered to give me an "odd job for money"?

Kind of like that, yes.

Except what the Marines do is less brutal....😍 When can I come visit again?

I took my brother out for seafood last night...I think I'm still beating on him but in different ways: We had every fried bit in the joint (oysters, shrimp, lobsterettes, fish, scallops), then he had surf and turf and crab legs. He could hardly walk after.

I'm interviewing in San Diego this week for TY and Peds...think happy thoughts!

Im taking the PE Jan 20th, so Ill be out there the nights of the 19th and 20th. Anybody going to be out there one of those (or both) nights. Or, anybody know anybody thats going to be out there those days? Let me know, sharing a room would be nice.

astro and I are going to be there the 13th of February. I think we are just flying in the night before taking it, and getting F out of there. I don't like philly very much. If everyone got there dream residency where would you end up? Just trying to see what states/cities people are going to be around incase I ever decide to travel cross country.

I'll think of all of you when I'm in Rome listening to the Pope talk about how crazy the Muslims are............I'll probably be the guy kidnapped even though I have no religious standing:scared:

Good luck getting out of there same day. Ive been looking online and cant find a flight leaving philadelphia heading back toward the midwest at 6:00 or later. I figure since the test ends at 3:30 any earlier would be risky.
