I am from CT so i don't have an instate osteopathic school, Most but not all of these schools websites list their breakdown but I just want to be sure, because some schools like Mich st. i couldnt find on their website if they dont take a lot of out of staters; im pretty sure OU doesnt take a lot of instaters but my LOR comes from a graduate of there who is now a Chief of medicine, so i figure its still worth a shot:

Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Mare Island

Western University of Health Sciences / College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific

Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences

New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology

Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Main Campus

I know MSUCOM has a strong in state preference. It is a public school.

do i have a shot with them with a 3.5 and 3.5 sci gpa and a 30 balanced mcat being out of state or is that a stretch?

Great stats. They actually seem competitive for both MD and DO schools. As far as OOS bias, normally (don't quote me on this) private schools tend to not have a bias and state schools do. I think you are in great shape though!!

thanks, i actually applied to MD schools last year and only managed 1 interview and 0 acceptances out of 16 schools applied to. So this year im keeping more options open because I really do not want to go through this a third time.

I actually would have applied DO last year but at the time i wanted to do interventional radiology which is tough enough to get to as an MD and almost unheard of as a DO which scared me away. I love the DO philosophy though, I tore a muscle in my neck in high school and a DO helped me get better after about 3 MDs failed.

Yeah just apply early and broadly to MD and DO and you should be great. I knew interventional radiology was competitive ( I've actually been somewhat interested in it myself) but I didn't know it was that difficult. Are there any AOA residencies for it, or do you just have to compete for MD ones?? Either way, you'll be fine this cycle.

I dont think you can go IR without an MD residency, but good luck!

I know of at least one DO interventional radiology program but I believe it is the only one.

One of my recommenders told me that getting into pcom without a letter from a pcom alum is next to impossible., is this true?

if you got in without, what are your stats and are you in or out of state?

I think NYCOM is also pretty selective with in state vs. out of state.

MSU has in state priority, which is a GOOD thing, because if you get in OOS, you will spend the rest of your existence in debt. :scared:

NYCOM has about a 70% in state priority.

Ohio has some in state priority (don't know the %, believe it is high).

PCOM seems to have some instate and/or regional (ie, PA, NJ, NY) priority.

Your stats are great. (I can't believe you didn't get in last year.) You will definitely get an acceptance somewhere. I think you could get into PCOM and probably NYCOM too. NYCOM does have a big, in-state preference, but they do seem to like students from the NY metro region, (including CT). You have a great shot at a lot of great schools. Apply early and to a lot of them and you should be fine. GOOD LUCK!!!!:luck::luck:

thanks for the vote of confidence.. i actually didnt apply DO lsat year, only MD, but the only reason was because i was really into interventional radiology and i didnt think i could get there as a DO, i was 1) wrong and 2) not that interested in radiology anymore
so going DO also this time was an easy choice.

my primaries probably wont be approved for a while though, i submitted the primaries for both on sunday night and sent out the transcripts overnight on monday.

NYCOM does favor in staters but I feel like New York is represented just as much as New Jersey and there are a lot of people from Ct. there too so ultimately I would say NYCOM favors people from the immediate region in addition to people from NY. With a 3.5 GPA and a 30 MCAT and being from Ct. I would say you have a very good chance at being accepted to NYCOM.

NYCOM is on the North Shore of Long Island and is only about 15 miles from the Ct. border (although 12 of miles miles of which is the Long Island Sound)! Some of our clinical professors live in Ct. and drive down to the Island when they have a lecture. I have a friend from Greenwich and Hartford at NYCOM and I know there are a lot more from Ct.

I would absolutely apply to NYCOM if i were you.
