Meaning, does a copy of the prescription get forwarded back to the doctor after it is filled like how you get bank statements at the end of the month on all the checks you have written? Or do they not care when or if things get filled?

I'm not sure if they care or not, but they don't get a copy in order to know if it's been filled or not.

No. They just assume it was. It would put WAAAYY too much strain on the pharmacy to have to sort and maill all of that crap, then resort them for auditing purposes.

As of now, they can't know for sure. It will be interesting to see how e-prescribing affects this though. I would imagine that its 'possible', especially with point of sale systems like Rite Aid and Safeway have, that the prescriber could check back and see if and when the Rx was purchased.

Thanks, I didnt think so. I just thought it might be interesting if docs got back at least their CII scripts and check their own master list. It might cut down on people forging. The doc could say...I didnt prescribe to that person, then the police could do something. *shrug*

For controlled drugs, most states are going toward a system where some health professionals can access the Dept of Justice system records to find out if a controlled drug has been filled. Some states are more cumbersome than others - in CA its pretty easy - in NY its non-existant. 27 states have adopted this under a federal grant - the rest are in the process of developing methods to allow greater dissemination of information, but right now...the methods they use are up to them.

As pharmacists in CA we can see what CII & III's have been filled for a particular patient name & by what prescriber. For prescribers, they can see what pts have filled CII & III's by their name. This is to be able to track for diversion.

Just to clarify....the triplicates which were referred to which CA no longer uses never had a copy mailed back to the prescriber. One copy was kept with the prescriber after the rx was written, the other two copies the pt took to the pharmacy. After being filled, the original was kept at the pharmacy & monthly, a copy was sent to the Dept of Justice.

Now, all CII's & III's rx fill info is sent in real time to the Dept of Justice by every pharmacy in CA, which makes the third copy superfluous. In additon, the physician's notes indicate what medications were prescribed, so again - just superfluous paper.

It seems like it could very well be something easy to input into a system, like giving them their own rXBIN(2) number and then check per chain. That might not have made a whole lot of sense, but I have the idea in my head.. ha
