DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've known about DO since dental school, but at that point I was interested in dentistry. Once I graduated dental school and worked in the US I was exposed to osteopathic medicine more. I'm now working back in Ontario.

Buddy just hold your breath and wait. You are quite late! In any case if you do get the invite... just go. Their waitlist moves pretty fast!

hey vpp

did you hear from western?? it's been forever since we interviewed...

That's what I plan on doing. I think that Touro is pretty selective to who gets the secondary app so I made sure to get that in ASAP.

i got just waitlisted at western...I guess I have to go to my Touro interview and being this late I must start thinkin about applyin early next year!!!

Accepted waitlist for the 2016 class? or just normal waitlist?

normal waitlist (or alternate status)...what's weird is that if I apply early next year (in couple of months) I will have 2 applications in there!!

Hey man! Sorry to hear about the waitlist! I was rooting for you
I think you should still keep up with western- the waitlist may move.

good luck @ tourocom! Any news from AZCOM yet?

she said that there is no order in the waitlist and it all depends on how proactive you are...that gives some hope

i should have heard from azcom last week...nothin in my portal which means either rejection or waitlist. i guess...

Hey Buddy, don't worry. As I mentioned earlier TouroCOM's wait-list does move a lot. So do your best. For your interview, I will recommend you use interview stream just to be best prepared. You can ask your institution's co-op office for access. It will help you prepare for the interview. For Touro COM stress a lot on Primary practice-- their Dean is quite BIG in the DO world and he stresses a lot on the importance of Primary medicine. Good luck there buddy. Just be confident and practice like anything.

Did you receive a mail from them? I got accepted buddy. Its bittersweet I ended up depositing $1250 at NSU. Oh Well if only the Washington Snow Storm occurred a day later!

VPP I hope to see you at Western! Do you know if thats where you are going to attend 100%?

congrats drgioiadds! Touro had a really nice building when i interviewed. Their facilities are prettying damn nice

UBCVan: sorry to hear about Western, keep your chin up! I have a lay-over in LA when I come back from Australia so perhaps I will go covert with a ninja outfit, sneak into the Western office, and switch your waitlist to accept!

Thanks - I'm looking forward to it. Enjoy Australia, I was there about a year and a half ago on a contiki tour. Bungee jumped and sky dived in Cairns - intro dive in the great barrier reef! Good stuff!

Heading to Touro-NY for an interview next week. Looking forward to it.

I had my interview on the 15th...since your in NY, make sure you visit all the cool places like times square, statue of liberty, UN, empire state building ...

good luck and have fun

LOL, funny you should mention that. The OMM lab is right across the hall from the Gross Anatomy cadaver lab. On 2 separate occasions during OMM, I saw the motion sensor paper dispensor go off by itself (i.e., give off paper when NO ONE was near it).... People gave an raised eyebrow but that was it... mmhmmm.. spirits about

hey guys I gotta question to ask!!

since yall know I was waitlisted at western. I'm concerned about student visa in case I'm taken off the waitlist. In case that happens I won't have a lot of time to apply for student visa and I won't be able to matriculate. So my question is can I apply for student visa now (with a waitlist status) or I must have an acceptance in order to apply for visa???

I'm doing school in the states right now and the school organizes your student visa and the overall process since your visa is based on the school. I think I started mine in about May or June and it doesn't take that long at all.

Things you can do now is make sure you have a valid passport and you need to show proof of funds I think for the Sevis application (to get your visa).

When I went to Marquette for Dental school - the student visa wasn't a big deal. I rarely even got asked for it at the border. As long as you have a valid passport and proof of funds you should be ok.

but aren't you supposed to have visa in order to attend school?? let's say I get off waitlist in aguest (when classes start), would that leave enough time to get visa???

about getting loan, how long before should I talk to the banks to get the money???

I do have a valid passport and fund I assume wouldn't be a problem, but I worry if I get off waitlist in like August.

You need to have the visa to start school, you can't legally attend classes in the US without one (according to US immigration website). that being said, the process, even if you flew through it, would likely take a week. Remember, you'll need to get bank loans, get the money, open a US based acct, transfer the money, fax proof of funds and then get it approved. It sounds like it should go fast but it took me 2.5 weeks after all the delays I ran into, pretty much at every step something went wrong. As a Canadian, I doubt they would pull you off the waitlist unless they know youll have time to get visa approval though.

From the sounds of it at Western its really easy. Once accepted you get an email immediately as an international. I havent done it yet, but I just send proof of funds for first year med, address details (at home, not states unless you have it). After that they send you an I-20 form which you bring to the border or airport...show up to school and they do all the rest to get you the F-1 Visa

Hello Drc, I submitted my seat deposit for Western today. However my desire to stay closer to home or in Canada will have an impact where I go. I will hopefully have a clearer picture in May.

Hey thumbz. Do you know if one has to transfer the entire line of credit (150-200k) into the american bank account? I have heard that most banks in canada will only allow students to touch 50k annually. So does that mean we fax two proof of funds statements? Ie the 50k in an american bank and the balance in a canadian bank?

Thanks 🙂

Hey all you WesternU matriculants. I'm looking for a roommate for the upcoming year. I have an apartment in Claremont that's 10-15 min drive from school depending on traffic (25min on bike to, and 30min on bike from (uphill)). Anyway, it's a nice neighbourhood (avg income is ~75,000), Claremont colleges library to study in (very close) - overall a nice University town. Downtown Claremont is ~1 mile north of the place, within walking distance, 1 -2 min by car. It's a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment, LOTs of space, 2 parking slots (1 with shed, 1 in the open (where I'm parked right now)). Air conditioning AND central gas heating (it can actually get pretty cold in the desert at night!) Basically, everything's set up already, internet etc - a few more things you wouldn't have to worry about on top of moving to a new country 😛. I want to extend my lease for another year, and wanted my roommate to be a 1st year Canadian matriculant - so we'll have stuff in common and I can also help you out/share some tips. (The rent right now is 1250 per month - I'm paying less than most of my classmates in my year for living). Anyhow, if you are interested, feel free to give me a pm! We can work on the details 🙂

Had my interview at Touro - NY yesterday. I really liked the atmosphere of the school. Overall, I had a great experience there and I think Touro would provide excellent training.

I have to say out of all 4 interviews I've had, touro's faculty and student were the nicest and apparently the school really listens to its students since they're new and want to improve. But sigghh that class is almost full!!

I don't worry about the class almost being full. If you are at the interview it means there is a chance. Obed did not tell us that the class is almost full, he did tell us that most of the high wait list will get an offer. Almost 100 extra acceptances have to be offered to fill the class.

I really enjoyed my conversations with the interviewers because it made it obvious that the school is looking for more than just stats. Obed even mentioned that MCAT was only 10% of the equation.

Hey GTP, sorry I missed the bump on this thread.

Uhm, I was told I had to have the entire $330k in a USD account so that's what I had to do. Luckily I know the branch managers at my bank very very well so they allowed me to move all the money as one large sum. I'm afraid I can't be of much help in this area.

Did they tell you that you would have an answer in 2 weeks?

yes they did. but from what ive seen from recent interviewees, we should get an answer in 3 weeks. How do we get the answer? email? phone call?

Obed told me it would be my email. I lost my cell phone in NYC so I wanted to update the phone number on file.

All of us know that there are schools listed in the CIB that accept international applicants, but they have a strong preference for US applicants (i.e- LECOM-Erie). Therefore, we should all start a list stating which schools offered us interviews. Although the results of the list may be inconclusive, since stats and ECs play a key role in who is offered an interview. Nevertheless, this will be helpful to future applicants who can save their time & money by not applying to schools which don't really take Canadians (i.e- LECOM-Erie 🙄 🙄).

I'll list where I applied. I was real late because I took the jan. MCAT.

Applied: AZCOM, LECOM-E, UNECOM, NOVA, Touro-NY, PCOM
Secondary: ALL UNECOM, LECOM-E and Touro NY waited for MCAT Scores
Interview: Touro NY (will find out in a few weeks, but this is a top choice!)

I have read in the past on SDN forums that Canadian Osteopathic Association (osteopathic.ca) gives some kind of $5000 scholarship/grant/loan?? Anyone know more about this?

I just went to that website and saw the notice from MSU. I did not apply there, but it sounds like Canadians will probably be given a certain number of spots in the class at probably in state tuition. That would be something to consider if I have to reapply. However, I really liked Touro-NY, even compared to Marquette dental - Touro seems like a much better school in terms of student - faculty relationships.

this was discussed about couple months ago...some of us contacted MSU and they said that it''s not true...even if it were true MSU is one school no one here would want to apply because of: 1) high OOS tuition (~70K) 2) extermely stupid secondary

The letter made it sound like the OOS tuition wouldn't apply. The letter seemed funny on the website because it wasn't dated.

Actually, the secondary is pretty fair because there is no interview. They select student based on that secondary and that's why it is detailed. But I think you do get invited to see the school if you get accepted but they don't interview you. It's one of the best DO school so if someone wants to apply, I think it's fair deal

Regarding the fees, none of us has applied so we can not be sure about the tuition rate. They may provide more detail about reduced fee if you get accepted. So if someone is applying next year, they should not remove MSU just based on tuition and secondary. Just something to consider for future applicants!!

For those interested in MSU, I contacted one of the deans and he told me that Canadians will be discounted $20,000 per year from the OOS tuition. Sounded like the program would start next application cycle.

I'm ready to know what's going to be happening with me next year 😉

Just to add, they mentioned at our class meeting that they accepted 16 Canadian residents into the class of 2015. The AOA is interested in promoting osteopathic medicine in Canada, and I hear a rumor of a Canadian Osteopathic Medical School in the future. Not sure how soon a Canadian Osteopathic program would occur though.
