DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What about the area Mashmetoo... I heard its pretty sketchy from the folks who live there...???
Hopefully car insurance is cheap there... do you own a car there?

I live in Claremont, a 2nd year told me that Claremont got ranked the "2nd best place to live in California" or something like that. It's a rich neighbourhood, and it shows. Pomona is a bit sketchy, but a lot of people also live in Pomona, there are 2 housing complexes RIGHT BESIDE the school. It' literally like 10 feet away. Those will cost a bit more I think. But there are lots of housing options, you just have to shop around.

the insurance is much cheaper than in Canada that's for sure! Something like 1400 a year. Yes, I purchased a car within 1 month of moving there.. It was quite a story getting my California driver's license... lol but that's for another time 🙂

Hi Mashmeetoo

Great job on the premed101 post. I just read it. I am a Canadian non-trad that decided to go the DO route about a year ago after doing all the same research as you and coming to the same conclusions. I went through this year's application cycle and have been accepted to KCUMB - Class of 2015. It doesn't seem real yet though.

Hi Muffles, congrats on the KCUMB acceptance! I definitely know the feeling of acceptance to med school! It'll feel pretty surreal for the next couple weeks, if not months! Enjoy it as much as you can. It's great that I found so many fellow Canadians who came to the same conclusion as I did. I wrote that post on premed101 partly to convince others out there to come to the same conclusion. I'm pretty big on advocacy, and the DO profession just called out to me lol

As someone mentioned earlier, we should definitely all keep in touch and help each other out in the future. Updating on this thread would be a good start I think 🙂

congratz on KCUMB....I'm currently waiting for their final decision..they said they have it by Feb 1st :scared:

Did they ask you anything special regarding funding? like deposit all the 4 years money? or anything on the VISA?

Congratulations Muffles! Is it the end of application for you, or are you exploring more options?

Thanks everyone. I wish I found this thread earlier.

Well, I had an interview invite from AZCOM after I was accepted and so I did some more research and read everything in the AZCOM thread. Even though I booked my interview with AZCOM, at the end of the day I wasn't really convinced that it would be the school for me and I really felt at home and connected with KCUMB. Part of my issue with AZCOM was the whole "Canadians must deposit $300K into an escrow account". That just seemed really dumb. That and the fact that they apparently told people who had been accepted one thing about clerkships and then didn't follow through, misplaced emails, etc. It just seemed bad.

I had a brief chat with Patricia Harper while I was there. My understanding is that we deal with her and just need to show that we can access the required funding. We don't need to set up an account with all the money upfront. I plan of following up again in a couple of weeks.

At this point I think I am done. I applied to both MD and DO in the US and a couple of Canadian. I think the only thing that would sway me now was if I got an interview at the Ont school I applied to, and I really don't expect that to happen.

UBCvan - Good luck. I tried to get the info over the phone but they wouldn't give it to me (even though they had been giving the info by phone earlier in the year). It took a few days longer for me to receive my letter than other US applicants who had interviewed with me that day. It was a small envelope btw so don't panic.

Hey Muffles,

congratz on KCUMB- it's a great school. It must feel good to be done with application cycle.

UBCVan: they said that if we don't get the mail by Feb 4th(for delays or any other reason)- we can call in and ask for decision, they won't tell over phone before that.

didnt Patricia Harper (on the interview day) say that its better to email her than calling cuz she gets the emails on her iPhone instantly and replies right away?? lol

man I dont know what to do with NY...I haven even got my tickets nothing...I thought I wait for KCUMB decision by 4rth and if its a rejection Ill get a ticket to NY then for Feb9th. what do you think..too risky?

ALSO how come neither AZCOM nor TouroNY sent me any information on hotels or anything?? I don know what I'm supposed to do...

KCUMB was very organized in doing that.

AZCOM sent me hotel info. I stayed in the thunderbird executive INN. If you book your flights through Expedia, try booking hotels along with flightL that will be cheaper on the whole. I think you should be able to find a flight from Vancouver to NY: both are major cities. You might want to go to a travel agent and keep a ticket on hold for yourself.

don't worry you will be fine. Don't rush booking the flights, the worst thing can happen is you have to pay little extra for flights. If it's really expensive then you can take my feb 16th date, I am going to switch anyways- I can't go on that day now or cancel depending on what comes out from my other interviews.

AZCOM sent me a link for hotel information with interview invites and confirmation email as well. I remember Touro also sent some attachments with interview invites. let me know if u didn't get them- i will send you.

Accepted to AZCOM.... Rejected from McMaster 🙁 Sadness is ruling my heart at the moment

Congrats!!! I think this is #3 for you! hat-trick...👍

If you do book, i highly recommend flying Cathay Pacific. I have been on a dozen airlines and to this day, its still the nicest airline I have flown even as economy. It might be an extra $100 or something but its worth it. Also its the ONLY flight that goes direct from Vancouver to New York, the others have at least one lay-over. Its on a circuit from hong-kong to Van to NYC and back to Van than Hong-Kong.

I booked mine 2-3 weeks in advance lol so I dunno about a few days. Its probably still possible. Hopefully u will hear from KCUMB in time🙂

what I usually do is drive to Seattle and take a plane from there..this way a 500 dollar ticket becomes 270...which is so cheap...but I'll take a look at that airline you mentioned...

Let me know what you think compared to KCUMB and AZCOM
btw see if you can get earlier date @ AZCOM too.

Congrats on the recent acceptances and intervies folks! Keep em coming.

Question: Have any of you started looking into what comes after med school yet (I know, its really early). Such as visas for residencies and all that jazz? Or am I way way ahead of myself.

I have been checking AZCOM portal couple of times each day for weeks now..nothing yet..

BUT i will check Western and write a full comparison on Western vs. KCUMB.

Main points (for now) that MAKE me choose KCUMB over Western are as follows:

1)tuition at KCUMB is 41K and at western is 45K.. for four years that is --> 16K cheaper for KCUMB
2)cost of living is so much cheaper in KC than is in LA or pomona: in KC you can rent a one bedroom for ~550$/month and in LA or pomona as you said it's ~1100$/month. Considering you stay in KC for only your first 2 years that is ---> 550$ * 24 months = 13200$
If you decide to stay in KC for year 3 that's even cheaper (or any cheap state)
so now 16K+13K=29K
you will have ~30K less loan money to pay back...of course if you decide to stay in KC for years 3 and 4 or any other cheap state that will be ~ 42K less money to pay back...I THINK THIS IS HUGE (include the interest rate)
3)The match list for KCUMB is the best match list for all DO schools in terms of % of students getting into top specialties (i.e. I calculated their top specialties to be about 33% for the last 3 years-those are Gen-surg,Orth-surg,rad,anes,urology,neuro,neuro-surg,derm,plastics, patho,OBGYN)
BUT western is not appealing in terms of specialties only 15%(30 people) of listed names went to specialties--of these only 6 were matched in California....
-------------------------------
to be honest I don't know what to make out of this....I would die to live SoCal but I'd be 30-40$ more in debt. and I dont really know what the match list means...I just dont know...is 15% because 85% really wanted to go to primary care or is it because a lot of them didnt get matched to specialties either because 1)the school didn't do a good job? 2) students didn't do a good job? 3)SoCal is so competitive that not many people have the chance of getting into specialties? But again the data are CONSISTENT from year to year so we can't really say it was the students!!!

😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕

but I will check western out and write a detailed comparison!!

MedApps!!! Congrats! You better be coming to Western!😛

Congratulations Medapp88

I will be most likely staying at the Shilo Inn UBC

Alright, I will update some info here. KCUMB tuition is around 42k+ I think, 41k was for 2010-2011. I will double check though.

I did little research on Housing and living expense @ Western. One bedroom apt is around $900/month and two bedroom apartments are around 1200-1300/month. That brings the cost down to around 600-650/month compared to 450-500 of Kansas city. So it's not very expensive. I am willing to pay that much to live in CA over kansas city. So the cost would not be as high as you accounted for. You can do the math.

3) Match list- I went through both lists and It is true that KCUMB had higher match rate for specialty residency but you only looked @ 1 year match list of western. It usually varies from year to year so you can't read too much into match list. Also, I will point out that western had about 60% students matching to ACGME accredited residency- It's important factor if you ever want to return to Canada. Also, I feel like it's very competitive to match into specialty residency is CA because there is very strong competition from very good MD schools in CA- Don't quote me on this.

Anyways, go check it out and rock the interview- let me know if you have any Questions.

Congratulations Medapp88

I will be most likely staying at the Shilo Inn UBC

Thanks VPP
Ye, I stayed in Shilo Inn too- It's fairly cheap compared to the rest and they give free shuttle to and from University & Airport.

In Fact, I looked at match lists for 8 different graduating classes. Although some of the lists are not complete, but they should give you a big picture of where students end up.

check out the link for the 8 different match lists. Very FEW specialties in general.🙁

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=7413523&postcount=640

EDIT:
Approximately 60 percent of KCUMB graduates enter ACGME-accredited postgraduate training programs, while 35 percent enter AOA-accredited programs. The remaining 5 percent enter institutions with dual-accreditation.
same as Western.

Sorry, I didn't have link to all match lists. thanks for posting the link. You are making my choice more & more difficult assuming I get into KCUMB. Anyways, we will continue this discussion after your interview and wait for KCUMB decision which will come out anytime next week- good luck.

Hey everyone! First-time poster here... and I want to say CONGRATS on the acceptances guys! 😀😀😀

I will be applying next round for 2012 and have a couple questions:

1. Anyone taken distance ed courses for prereqs? I'm taking Bio I and Chem I with lab components (from Athabasca) and I'm wondering if anyone had difficulties with their schools accepting distance ed courses, and how to resolve it.

2. I'm a non-traditional applicant (have a JD and I'm old:laugh:) and many schools require LORs from science faculty. Given my bachelor's was in pure math, I don't have any science profs to get LORs from. Would it be feasible to take a science course at UBC in the summer and get a LOR from them? Any other suggestions?😳 I'm guessing not many people are in this boat lol.

Any and all advice is appreciated!!🙂

Hello Friend,

Distance Ed courses are acceptable to some universities (eg Western). But you have to be carefuly about credits.
Math is considered as Science. So you get LORs from your Math Profs if they still remember you. (Give it a shot)
I will suggest you actually go to a university to get your pre-reqs rather than going the online route. This way you can build some referees as well.
Good Luck!

After the Washington disastrous snow storm, not only will I lose about $1250, I have also been rejected by ON schools. A very rough week. Going to TouroCOM interview tomorrow. I am going to look very pissed off at that interview 🙁

Eek. I'm not going to look forward to interviews next year.😱

Thanks for the tips. I'm enrolled in the distance ed courses now because I decided to pursue medicine just a few weeks back. The classes at UBC (where I got my JD) were already full. I guess I'll register for a summer Physics w/ lab class at UBC.

Good luck with your interview!🙂

hey Wyydo

I would HIGHLY recommend going to a community college like Douglas College to take those prereq courses for following reasons:

1) very small classes (max 35-40)... you learn better and do better on your exams. Hence: easier to get a good grade
2) they teach you and want you to do well not like 300-500 classrooms at UBC or SFU that don't even care about you
3)since classes are smaller, you can build a very strong relationship with your profs. and your age would even help you more in doing so. Hence: a very good LOR
4) much cheaper
5) DO/MD schools don't care where you take your courses. I personally took my first 60 credits of undergrad at Douglas College and have not encountered any problem.

good luck!!

VPP:

I thought you were accepted somewhere. DMU? why bother with TouroNY?

Does Touro NY accept canadians that are not US residents? I couldn't find that on their website and they don't have a contact email.

I applied late in the cycle - but AZCOM seems very Canadian friendly and organized compared to some other schools.

yes they do..in fact DRC in here has been accepted to Touro...furthemore almost all of us have got intevews there!!!

Touro-NY does an automatic interview if you meet the pre-reqs

Wow, this thread is great! I stumbled into here just for curiousity / fun ... I wish this thread was around when I was applying way back when. I'm a Canadian and set to graduate in about 6 months from a DO school. Currently going through the fun, expensive, marathon better known as residency interviews!

Good luck to you all. If you have any questions feel free to holler.

Hi hsmooth, I know it's been a while since you've posted this. Hope your residency interviews are going well! I was wondering if you could give us a quick update on any obstacles you're encountering as a Canadian applicant? Are US DO grads favored over Canadian DO grads? If so, by how much..as far as you know.
Since you're one of the few on the forum who's actually experienced it all - would you choose the DO route again knowing what you know now? Have you encountered other Canadians who's matched to an allopathic residency and are working back in Canada now? Or those who's matched to a Canadian residency position, although that sounds pretty rare). Thanks so much in advance!

Christine, do you mean that they don't do any interviews at Touro-NY?

She means that you get an automatic interview if you get a secondary application from Touro. Compared to other schools where getting a secondary doesn't mean you will get an interview.

Touro pre-screens the applicants before they send out a secondary.

welcome to SDN

1) I retook Ochem 2 through distance ed (TRU in kamloops) and I had no problems updating my marks with them accepting the course.

2) I went to UBC and the LOR situation might be hard. I am almost out of time on my computer (im travelling in australia) so when I get more time I will try to remember to message you with what science courses are A) easy and B) have a nice prof who will write you a letter. Most science profs at UBC are not the nicest people and unless you really really suck up and act fake, you wont get a LOR.

I'd really appreciate that!

I've actually taken non-lab 1st year courses in Chem and Phys while in an engineering program, so hopefully those won't be overly difficult.

But yeah the profs can make a huge difference. Thanks a bunch!😀
