DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey! I'm from MAC too! 🙂 Just wanted to say hi... what year are you in? I haven't found any other students at mac who are looking into the DO route.

probably closet applicants, haha. I'm from McGill and I know that 'my peeps' would rather commit hara kiri than admit to applying DO or any other allied health field.👎

i graduated this year from physics. im gona email aacomas and see what they have to say regarding accreditation.

For Des Moines, you have to pay the entire 4 years of tuition upfront if you want to go there. Just ridiculous... 🙁

http://www.dmu.edu/prospective_students/international_students/

If you are an international student not currently in the U.S., follow these steps:
...
* Prepay tuition, fees, books and expenses for your entire course of study at Des Moines University prior to April 30.

---------------------
http://www.dmu.edu/prospective_students/international_students/faq/

How much do I pre-pay?

The amount to be pre-paid is determined by combining the "student cost of attendance budget" for the entire length of the program; the tuition rate for the first year of the program is used for the entire course of study. Note: Living expenses may be impacted by inflation; students must absorb any increase in cost of living.

-------------------------

http://www.dmu.edu/prospective_students/international_students/SAIS Form.pdf

Non-U.S. citizens accepted into full-time, on-campus programs must prepay to Des Moines University all tuition, fees, books and living expenses for their educational program, to be held in an escrow account. For students in the DO, DPM, DPT, PA, MSA, and MBS programs, funds must be received by DMU's Accounting Office by April 30 prior to enrollment.

Prepaid tuition, fees, and expenses will be based upon the estimated cost of attendance budget for the entire length of the program (DO=4 years; DPM=4 years; DPT=3 years; PA=2 years; MSA=2 years; MBS=2 years)

living expenses? What the heck do they care where and how we live/how much we pay in rent, utilities, food, clothing, etc?

DMU requires you to sign something when you send in your secondary apps saying what you guys posted, paying in full.

How far is everyone along the process? Filling out secondaries?

Hello. I am filling out aacomas application and was just ready to submit. I actually applied to DO schools last year as well, but very late in the season. I just noticed that they marked my TOP canadian school as "unaccredited". And they did not calculate the gpa. What is that supposed to mean? I am quite insulted.

Is your school actually a "top" Canadian school? Which one is it if u dont mind me asking?

We always get the short end of the stick as Canadians🙁

HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY BEEN CONFIRMED FOR THEIR PRIMARY YET? I have everything ready almost and am about to submit, but I have no idea how long it will take to confirm everything these days

any advice? Thanks

oh to add to a previous post...... SMPs are only in the US. well true ones

Mine was verified last week. It took about 2 weeks.

When I filled out my primary and it was verified, they didnt have the University of Toronto as an accredited university but they had Ryerson

So in the pre req section of my verified app, only ryerson courses appeared. Later when I asked them, they "added" UofT to their list and the corresponding courses.

Don't be afraid to email / message /call aacomas, they were pretty helpful whenever I asked.

hey CanV im also from MAC, good to see someone takin the DO route, so what program are u in?

Has anyone heard from any schools yet? I haven't submitted yet but I'm curious to know how you guys are doing.

Has anyone heard from any schools yet? I haven't submitted yet but I'm curious to know how you guys are doing.

I heard back from DMU, NSU and PCOM. Never received anything from LECOM-Erie.

I just got verified today. How long did it take before you guys started receiving secondaries??? And if you did, which schools?

Hey ManUnderFire,

When you sent your WES evaluations to NOVA, PCOM, and Western...... did you find their addresses via WES?

When I search for the schools, they come up....but not the Osteopathic college.....just the school in general

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone else could help too that would be awesome.

ps sorry if this is also in ur inbox MUF, I didnt know if it sent or not

No official interviews yet for me but got a secondary from TouroCOM NY. Apparently they give out a lot and a secondary invites and a secondary= interview.

I have all but one of my secondaries and have just submitted them in the past day or two.

You don't need to mail the WES directly to Western, just Nova (I don't know about PCOM). I had WES send it directly to Nova and I used the address they had which was the same as the one on the Nova website I believe. Does the Nova address on the webite even say osteopathic medicine in it, I don't think so?

Although what I didn't realize, is that when WES sends the evaluation to AACOMAS, it shows up in your interfolio account if you have one. So if you wanted to save some money, you could probably have interfolio mail it to Nova because it would be a lot cheaper than paying WES to do it.

Oh it took 2 weeks from verification to get secondaries. I'm still missing one and its been over 3 weeks.

Has anyone else received a secondary from CCOM? On the secondary it says "visa type" . What would i put consider I havent got one yet??

I haven't recieved a secondary from LECOM-Erie. Anyone else in the same situation?

You do know that you have to write TOEFL for CCOM? :bullcrap:

Oops I never did WES

I am on the website now, you guys did the "WES for Canada" application?

Thanks

edit: I think that option is for Canadian schools, I should chose the other option lol

I haven't recieved a secondary from LECOM-Erie. Anyone else in the same situation?
Is LECOM taking Canadians, because I know for the past 3-4 years they have allowed Canadians to apply and I think interview but none have been admitted? Any idea if this have changed? Keep us posted

Erie takes Canadians, Bradenton does not

I am "under review" for Erie...their secondary is annoying because you have to put in a SSN (they just told me to put in 0's) and you cant pay online unless you have a US address associated with your credit card.

When did you submit?

I received a secondary and my stats are pretty bad (above "cut offs" though).

Call and make sure they have everything maybe.

I just received a secondary from Bradenton??? I am confused why if they dont accept Canadians. Also, wtf i dont have a Social Security # lol. I wanted one from Erie, I submitted Aug 2nd I believe but nothing from Erie so far

What secondaries have you received so far Razmatazz?

Razmatazz,

Also how did you solve the problem with the US mailing address?

Razmatazz,

I don't think you should apply to Bradenton but it is up to you. When I called the admissions lady, she said they don't take Canadians but Erie does...however on the CIB, it says Bradenton takes non US people. I applied anyways ($50 secondary) and I got a rejection letter lol. The rejection letter didnt say that it was because I was Canadian but said med school was competitive etc (standard letter). I am attributing the rejection due to my resident status as a Canadian vs my stats (which arent great but dont warrant a fast rejection like that).

As for Erie, you dont pay online using a credit card (because you need a US address), so I sent in a money order with a letter explaining why. It takes a few more days to process this way vs a credit card but it is a way around the secondary online payment.

I got my Erie and Bradenton secondary at the same time within a few days.

All but VCOM, probably because my stats arent that great.

Some rejections due to being Canadian, cant remember all of them. I think WVSOM (needs a green card), Pacific Northwest, maybe 1 more.

I got put on hold at VCOM until my organic chem 2 retake is done. I guess thats good?

WVSOM i got a "secondary" from. But its not actually forms unless you are invited to interview. Basically you get to monitor yourself. Were u rejected pre-secondary on this status page?

I got rejected by DMU🙁 still a little bitter, but stats arent the best so i understand

Oh and some of these Secondaries are intense. I dunno about you but "why are school" question is becoming really hard to answer....and i have to answer is like 5 times for diff schools.

Razmatazz, i cant remember if i asked u this...but did you apply to Touro-NY?

Did anyone actually follow up on the TOEFL requirement at CCOM? Im pretty sure we dont have to, that sounds ridiculous

Just confirming that Nova (NSUCOM) requires a WES evaluation.

So these schools require WES evals:

PCOM
NSUCOM (send WES to school and AACOMAS)
WUHS-COMP

Hey guys, just a heads up... it might already be old news, but I emailed WUHS and she replied with:

"
Thank you for your interest in WesternU!

We do accept course work from a Canadian university, as long it is regionally accredited and the university you attended show grade conversation to a 4.0 grading scale and credit conversion to the semester system, and transcript is written in English. If your transcript does not show the US grade conversion but is regionally accredited, you will need to have the transcript evaluated for US equivalence. On our website you will find what evaluation services we accept.

If you have any further questions please contact me.

Best regards,

Martha Huizar
Admissions Coordinator
Western University of Health Sciences
College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific"

I got that WVSOM email with the link as well, but then got an email afterwards saying:

After review of your application file from AACOMAS, we regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you an interview at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. At this time WVSOM can only further consider applicants who have a permanent residency status (green card) in the U.S. International students, who are non-citizens, would therefore be eligible only if a green card is being issued to them as they enter the application process.

We appreciate your consideration of our program and wish you all the best in the selection of your future medical school.

Just got an email interview invite from Touro-NY today! A 10 minute subway ride to my interview isn't too shabby eh! lol

Congrats raz!! Good to see u get an interview.

I hate this app process already. My transcripts were lost somehow by aacomas. Hard to believe when I had it couriered and received tracking info from canada post saying they receieved it. Anyways I had to send it in again an they just received it today. Hopefully they process it fast and I get verified soon. I hate that spring courses rule 🙁 I can't wait till I start getting some secondaries let alone an interview. Hopefully I'm still not too late.

What schools have u gotten secondaries from raz?

Sorry for the rant but hey at least you have an interview 😀 👍

I got an interview too, us Canucks are doing alright🙂

Soo im in a really awkward position right now. You guys say that LECOM- Bradenton doesnt accept Canadians. I got a secondary from them plus I have been in email contact with one of their admissions people and she was helping me fill out my secondary (ie what to do for social security number, and how to pay cuz i dont have a US address).

soo i dunno if she is just saying this cuz they wanna take my $50 US, or cuz i am an exception??

What do u guys think

Jaywalk, long time since i've seen u post where u been😛

I dont think you are too late. Its still quite early in the cycle...but not super early anymore. You should start getting your secondaries this week. I got 10 secondaries in the course of 4 days. So be prepared to do some writing. They arent exactly the easiest. Most require a few essays.... and when u get a swarm of secondaries it can be intimidating

Good luck bro

Hey drc

I know i've been super busy with courses and research man. But yeah i am going to start looking at all secondary questions for the schools and start working on them this weekend. So when i get them I can get them faster than i sent my primary.

are there any secondaries other than lecom and nova that do not have essays?

umm not that im aware of. Off the top of my head MSU, Western, Touro-NY, KCOM, CCOM, and both PCOMs all required essays....which sucks. Not sure about VCOM, i got put on hold till my OCHEM 2 retake comes in. The hardest question for us as Canadians is "what experiences do u have with osteopathic medicine and why has this solidified your desire to become a DO". I have that on two of the secondaries i believe and im having trouble answering. I dunno about you but i have never been treated by a DO in Vancouver.... I just shadowed one for a day

Which courses were u taking this summer?

I had ochem 2 retake, nutrition and ecology along with some research stuff. The nutrition course was the one i signed up for the spring before i knew about that rule but it was from athabasca so it took me till july to finish, then the whole transcript debacle happened. Set me back at least 3-4 weeks easily. Oh well we'll see what happens. I just looked up the sceondary question on the school discussion threads so i'm going to get to work on it asap.

Are u complete at most schools?

No im not complete at any yet🙁 . Im still waiting to hear back from my second Science reference letter.....which is starting to sketch me out. I emailed another prof too as a backup but he is away until Sept 1.

Secondaries are really rigorous, I was surprised. Its harder then it seems to whip off a few good essays. I have about 10 secondaries and I have only completed NSU and LECOM- Bradenton, although both are waiting for my reference letters and payments (which for LECOM was a bitch cuz i have to mail a money payment from my bank, they dont accept credit card from Canadians). I have only done rough drafts of a few secondary essay questions but Im waiting for family and gf to edit/provide advice before i submit

If you want the essay prompts for any particular school, let me know i will prob have it (except for DMU, i got rejected)

Good luck

I didn't apply to bradenton cuz they told me that they wont take any canadians. But they told me to apply to the erie branch which i did. at the cool thing is that u got an invite from touro, must be cool to have an invite. When are u heading there?

I think i got most of the prompts from the thread but, thanks for the help 🙂 Now hope my app gets sent out in the next 10 days or so.

for lecom can you get a relative from US to pay for the fees via credit card? my sis lives there so i might ask her to pay for my secondary fee and then pay her after.

sad to hear about the rejection from dmu. i love that school too man but i think it will be a long shot to get in there for me 🙁 still applied there tho 😀

I got an interview invite from NSU...but I didnt do WES.

Maybe they will make me do it after or something...who knows.
