DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey UBC,

I am not really sure but I think it's for the non-canadian international, who would need visa for interview. College would not sponsor visa paper for interview. We don't need to worry about it. If you do decide to call them, can you please update it here?

Just wondering, Has any1 got an interview from KCUMB yet?

Hi again
so I contacted them, they said don't worry about it, just get the VISA after you've been accepted...she seemed really nice too...👍

I won't take such a strong position against MSU here, but I do agree that they are doing themselves a dis-service by the letter requirement. I can understand their logic. The letter is a more uniform way to grade everyone since you have no idea how well thought out your letter writer will be when writing your letter, whether he will focus on areas the school cares about, etc. It makes their work easier because it makes it easier to compare letters.

Yet from a practical point of view, it's just not possible for everyone to research the letter requirements beforehand. I actually finished my essay for MSU and when I saw the letter requirement I ended up not sending in my application. I have too much respect for my letter writers' time.

Exactly, their reference letter requirement is not practical and it seems to be a common trend that we all agree its uncomfortable out of respect to ask our references to take the time to fill these forms out. Im sure they will lose many Canadian applicants over the years simply because of their letter requirements. There is no way at all that they are going to reach that 25-30. Last year only 37 Canadians applied to US Osteopathic Medical schools. They expect most of the applicants to choose MSU....when its not only more expensive (by a long shot) but a HUGE inconvenience for the applicant....they are dreaming, in my opinion

It's easily among the most reputed college: clinical rotations are secure and with MD folks in best hospitals. I wonder if some of us can apprise them of this issue may be they will listen? I doubt tho... its a good school, hands down.

Thank you for confirming!

About MSU I agree, the letter requirement is too much- on top very high tuition. Is there any1 on this forum, who has applied to MSU?

The education is great, one of the best. But their policies are absurd. If I dont get in this year, I will be applying there next year...just because of this new policy they have with Canadians. However, I didnt even email back to withdraw for secondary so I may be red flagged lol. If their reference policy ever changed I would apply there right away. However combined with tuition, any of us can get into a relatively equal school with regards to education.

What was the deadline for secondary application?

what I have realized so far is clinical rotations for most schools are not secure, by that I mean you might have to find them/move to different locations. According to what I see, MSU, CCOM, Western and NSU have the stablest rotation sites. AZCOM is getting there... so that's the scary part. I don't really like to move around while studying. Plus its a big hassle moving out of town, getting new place to live... so on and so forth. But then again even though there is frustration in the system, but the end result is fruitful. So it really doesn't matter when all is done... But just saying MSU is an awesome school! I wonder how Detroit can afford to have 3-4 med schools in its vicinity (Wayne, MSU MD and DO, Oakland and may be others). Then there is U of Ann Arbor and other MD schools. THEIR POPULATION IS LESS THAN ONTARIO! All the schools are big, about 900 spots in Wayne and MSU alone: that's equal to what Ontario med schools can accommodate. Gross injustice Ontario Government for both the population and budding medical students! I feel like I should sue the government for the stress med school applications induces lol.

You get it after you have submitted your primary and they have processed your application. Its about a month from the time they notify you for secondary. Good Luck!😀

Hi all,

Just a quick update- Western Uni - Lebanon Campus is not accepting international students this year. Only Pomona is accepting Canadians.

Yes. LORs are processed from one campus and gets updated for both application and there is only one option for western Univ on interfolio for LORs and that's why I called them. Good thing I called before submitting Lebanon. They will probably be accepting Canadians from next application cycle at Lebanon as well- that's what I was told.

NSU interview 🙂 Jan 7th...
Good luck to drc and mauve for their upcoming interviews. Hope you hear good news

Hello Friends,

I talked with MSU-COM Admissions office today morning. They told me they are not even aware of the post that Canadian Osteopathic Association posted... that is they are not increasing any spots for Canadians or decreasing fee. Someone might want to call them and seek further information.

Mmmhmm, something FISHY is going... False information?...

Anyhow, WOW, I didn't realize there is a Canadian DO thread on SDN, and this thread is huge! Good job guys! I created a similar thread on premed101.com/forums on DO schools lol. I'm very happy to see that sooo many Canadians are interested/applying/matriculating at US DO schools, the future looks bright for us all~! 😀😀😀😀

Good luck to all of you! If you ever end up at COMP/Western U, we should definitely go out for drinks, and joke about the entire process lol

- Your friendly neighbourhood Canadian at WesternU 😀

There was only one other Canadian at the Western Interview, and just me at the Touro interview.

drc- how were your interviews?

Touro-NY interview: they drilled me with ethical questions, there was no mercy. The transition into the interview was terrible. My first question was questioning how do I know i wanna live in NY if ive never been before:scared:

Second question "would you give a liver transplant to an alcoholic". I didnt get asked "why medicine, why touro, why DO". Halfway through interview I thought "well im screwed, might as well try something new (dont ever try this, it just worked for me cuz I couldnt get any worse)" So I interrupted them and said "look can I please explain you why i want to study medicine, why osteopathic medicine, and why I am so interested in the Harlem community". They stared at me blank face and finally said Ya......so I switched the interview 180 degrees and had them laughing etc. I left on a very strong note, but I dont think it made up for first half.

Western: Such a laid back interview. I would describe it as having a conversation with a friend, but in a professional way (no swearing). My interviewer as one point said "awesome dude" lol but ya super friendly. I really really respect Western. They went above and beyond to make sure it was a really professional day and also as stress free as possible.

Western is now my first choice

For KCUMB, just outta curiosity what kinda of GPA and MCAT do you guys have? Im sure they are posted on here somewhere or in a PM, but I dont feel like searching through 8 pages of Canadian forum to find them lol

I never completed my secondary at KCUMB, NSU, UNE...and im kinda regretting it. I reached a point where I was done with secondaries. I filled out Touro, Western, PCOM (both), AZCOM, KCOM, CCOM. I did all the essays for the rest... I just didnt wanna fork up more money and didnt think I stood a chance. Now im wishing I did🙁

I have 3.8 GPA + 26M
I sent my secondary like 2 weeks ago and got the interview invite 2 days ago.
So you have received interviews at Touro and Western so far? any acceptances yet?

haha ya well they were treating me like crap and I knew I was clearly bombing the interview so I thought "well i got nothing to lose at this point"

Oct 19th rings a bell so I think thats when I was complete. I got my interview invite a month later approximately

thats an impressive GPA🙂

Just two interviews. No acceptances yet. Im on hold at VCOM, AZCOM, and KCOM until my OChem 2 marks come in (im writing final in a week or so)I find out in just over a week about Touro via phone call and Western in like 3 weeks probably

Hey, thanks for the update. I hope you get good news from western- it seems like u want to go there!!

my stats are 3.6 cGPA+ 30P, I was complete at KCUMB on Nov 20th and received invite 2 days ago.

Alos, I got hold status from DMU today- Not sure what will happen next? Does any1 know if it means pretty much rejection?

How long did AZCOM, KCOM did to get back to you?

A "Hold" is not as bad as you think. It means either they are A)waiting for an update ie a course retake or MCAT retake or B) They think you are not worthy of a rejection and want to wait to compare you to a few more students before making a decision.

Basically it means they are interested in you and think you are too worthy to reject.

I honestly dont remember for KCOM and AZCOM. I believe early November/ Late October. AZCOM sent a letter in mail and KCOM emailed

You are pretty competitive based on stats so expect a few more interviews coming your way

And YES, I am dying to get into Western. If you interview there, I promise you will be blown away. I have high standards and dont say that much. The decision on Western will either make or ruin my trip to Australia ( I leave Dec 29th for 4 months) lol.

Hello DRC, That was very ballsy of you say that! But its funny nevertheless. I got put on hold on by KCOM. I seriously have no idea why. I am dying to hear back from Western. Do they usually send out invite once a month? How many people do you think interviewed on your day?

apparently everyone's dying to go to Western...me too😀

what do you like so much about it? I love the location.

When I interviewed at Western there was 100 other people...yes 100. I know its a lot. However, they dont interview as often as other schools (or so it seems). 600 interviewed last year and 440 got acceptances. 1500 people got secondaries. So they screen HEAVILY before giving an interview.

Western has A) Great Location B) Impressive rotations + impressive residency placements C) Brand new, state of art facilities D) Systems based curriculum (A plus for myself) E) Gym facilities to stay in shape

While many other Osteopathic schools offer many of the things listed above, the MAIN thing that separates it from other schools (in my opinion) is how the faculty and students treat eat other. The faculty go out of their way to make sure your experience is good. Starting from getting interview invite. They call you. THis is very personal to me. At the interview, they were so nice and friendly. THey make it clear they treat you as an individual and not just a #. This is the complete opposite of UGrad at UBC, which I am used to.

Summary: I really want to go to a school that cares about their students. For every single situation, they treat you as an individual and adjust to your personal situation. This includes admission and if you are accepted, personal circumstances. The med student who gave me a tour said if shes gonna be late for class her prof texts her and tells her to hurry up (on a personal level, not nagging her). These type of relationships with faculty allow you to get an inside view of the next steps (residency) and sick reference letters, in my opinion. Plus I wanna be happy in med school, its probably the most stressed I will be in my entire life. If Im in an environment where people care about me, I will be a lot happier. Sounds corny, but its true. Wouldnt you want to be able to joke around with your prof etc?

Just my two cents🙂

PS. They have "international" rotations. Canada is considered international. So you can come do rotations in Canada, which kind of appeals to me.

Well said- I am looking forward to western too. I applied really late- I was complete most places mid to late nov. Do you know how full is class at this point or how many people have interviewed so far @ western this year?

Ya, I mean who doesnt wanna be treated like gold by faculty. I hear so many horror stories on SDN and from other pre-meds about how X med school is great, but they have problems with faculty and the faculty doesnt care about the students. Every 2 months, a Wednesday class is cancelled and the Dean comes in to talk to the students. He asks for all kinds of feedback from students and tries to accommodate. For example two big changes for the first year meds this year: 1) Students before didnt like the grading system. It used to be Pass or Fail. Some students didnt like how they worked a lot harder than other students who just barely passed...and werent rewarded. So now they have Fail, Pass, High pass, and Honors. 2) Students wanted a systems based curriculum. Now they have it. This is a HUGE change. Seems like they are always willing to change if students want it. I love this mentality that faculty actually listen to students.

I dont know how full the class is yet. They started interviewing in September apparently and I think they go until March or April (if I remember hearing correctly). With your stats, Im sure you will get an interview if you have some good medical experience to back it up. They interview once a month I believe. This would make sense since they interview 100 people each time...and 600 got interviewed last year

btw, Are you doing an exchange program in Aus? or traveling?

well I guess so far all of us (medapp,VPP,drc,me) would die to go to western...imagine if we actually get accepted....that would be something

O Yeah! Definitely. May be we can become study buddies 🙂

I also sense they call once every month. I am hopeful all of us get called from them at least for an interview. Apparently they select majority of those who interview. It will be one nice school to go to. Along with CCOM its my topmost............. Please God Bless me :luck: Wish you all luck.... My sixth sense tells me there call is coming soon 🙂:xf:👍

I was also interested in CCOM because everyone on SDN talks about the reputation. But then I realized that in terms of facilities and rotations, Western is outstanding. Then, I looked at the match list. Western's is very west coast heavy. Since I'm also only interested on the west coast or select east coast cities for residency, that basically sealed the deal. It's the best DO school for west coast city residencies, IMO.

That would be awesome! I know I would proudly wear my "Canada Gold" tshirt to class and clearly the Canadians would make up the Honours part of the class😛

I really hope you guys get interviews too, so you can see why I love it so much. Im scared my science GPA will land me a rejection though since the average GPA is like 3.56 and im no where near that. Although HOPEFULLY, they wouldn't have invited me for an interview if my GPA was a concern (I Mean they are pretty picky on who they interview). I did finish very very strong in my UGrad after all.

Im thinking of calling and asking for my result over the phone. I know they normally dont, but someone on SDN got the answer over the phone. Maybe if I say "I dont want the letter to get to my house, and im in Australia traveling"?

Oh also, CCOM is a great school. I was rejected pre-interview though🙁

for some reason I didn't like CCOM's location at all...although I would appreciate an interview :meanie:

They are one of the best schools. Re-reading my post, I don't want to seem like I'm bashing CCOM. They have their reputation for a reason. The west coast residency placements for Western are probably due to pre-selected candidate preferences in addition to any strengths of the program. At any rate though, at the end of the day, you have a wide network of graduates in all specialties practicing from seattle to san diego and that's the point I was hoping to make. Just wanted to clarify in case anyone interested CCOM reads this. It's an awesome school! 🙂

CCOM is near home 🙂 and rotations are pretty secure.

You totally didnt make it sound like you were bashing CCOM, no worries. You made a valid point: you dont like the location. That doesnt mean it isnt a great school (education wise)🙂

Hey guys, did anyone contact dmu to find out if that 250,000$ deposit applies to us or just bona fide international students (outside north america) Thanks

Yes, it applies to Canadians.

I think CCOM's tuition is close to around $50k. I didn't bother applying there...

Uh most schools have a tuition around that. We dont exactly get to be super picky as Canadians (unless you have dual citizenship). I know Western is 45000 and I think Touro-NY is 28000? With living expenses they are both about 75000 a year

What schools are below 40,000?
