Hello, I understand there have been threads discussing and ranking DO/FMG friendly programs before. But it's been a long time. So I would like to update my list of the programs I should aim for.. So please rank the programs from the most to least competitive where DOs consistently get interviewed/match. Or choose from among the programs where you (DOs) interviewed. Thanks!

There's a spreadsheet floating around the aunt minnie forums that should help you. It's one applicants experience from one or two years ago compiled with radiology matchapplicants.com info. Sorry I don't have the link handy. Bear in mind every year is different. Once DO "friendly" programs might not be friendly to you, and historically "unfriendly" programs might give you a shot.

Dr Skeptismo has a good point, you never know who might decide to take you seriously, so apply to wherever you want to go. Note, an away rotation would be a good idea if the program has no history of DO acceptances or DO Residents. I'd recommend an IR away rotation if you are interested in IR, at least that way you can work hard. It's hard to stand out on a Diagnostic Radiology away rotation... in my opinion.

I'm a 4th year DO applying for rads, ACGME only.

There is a neat spread sheet floating around, but I dont have it. I will let you know a list of programs that I am aware of that have taken DOs from my school or other DO schools, or at least offered interviews to DOs

In no particular order:

Cooper University - Camden, NJ (ACGME with DO Program Director)
Drexel University (DO Program Director)
University of Arkansas
Detroit Medical Center
Henry Ford Macomb Hospital , Warren MI
UT San Antonio
UT Houston (in the past, at least)
Baylor College of Medicine - Houston
UTMB
University of Connecticut - Hartfort
St Francis Hospital - Evanston IL
MUSC
Cleveland Clinic
University of Illinois - Peoria
Texas Tech - El Paso
EVMS
University of Colorado
LSU - New Orleans
Baystate Hospital - Springfield, Ma
Maimonides Hospital, Brooklyn Ny
University of Kentucky - Lexington

That by no means is the total list. It's just all I can offer.

Like the other guy said, certainly look at every program you're REALLY interested in. Look at the resident list and see if there are any DOs. And, for the programs you really really want, consider an away rotation. It will at least get you on their radar, but doesn't guarantee anything. Though, just so you know, where I did away rotations, I got interviews - but they are already on the list above, so maybe I would have anyway.

I was shocked at how many looks I got from MD programs even though I only took COMLEX, so regardless of the list that is generated by this thread, apply BROADLY to both MD Rads AND TY/Prelim programs. Definitely add community programs to your list like Aultman, Christiana, and Geisenger. U of Toledo, Louisville, Kentucky, Florida Shands Jax, and Peoria are all also very DO friendly.

My biggest advice (because it was a mistake I made) would be to apply broadly to TY/prelim programs. I was pretty naive in my approach to the MD side of applications and didn't apply to nearly enough of these and it would have forced me to move my family across the country twice over the next year had I gone MD. I ended up ranking 3 DO programs and matched to my top choice and couldn't be happier, but it would ave sucked to end up at a less desirable DO program simply because I didn't apply to enough TY's.

Anyway, I'm always open to questions if you want to PM me, and good luck over the next year…it'll be over before you know it.

I know for sure WVU takes DO students. It's actually a small, but good, diamond in the rough program.

Thank you all! So is it a good idea to do 3-4 away rotations in different parts of the countryto get more exposure? I.e. rotation/lor in NYC would be good for any northeast programs?
Also any thoughts on transitional year programs which ones are do friendly? I did not think about those. But if I were gunning for a transitiol or im or GS year in California should I do an away there?

Sure do 3-4 if you can fit it into your schedule. HOWEVER, do not schedule ANY AWAY rotations from mid November thru January. Also, if you have to do a SUB-internship, do not schedule it for that time either. I made the mistake of doing a Sub-internship in January and I ended up with 5 interviews during that month. Every day off I had an interview. I didn't have a day off for like 20 days (flying to and going on interviews do no constitute a day off for me). It was horrible. Probably worst month of medical school.

Interviews can be anytime between October to February (so I've heard, I did not have any in Feb). But it gets really busy from Mid November to January (yes, January - going into Interview season I was under the impression January wasn't busy, but it was for me at least). Typically no interview for the two weeks around Christmas, in my experience. Some schools give off more time than others, so maybe this isn't an issue for you. But I really only had one month for interviews. I used the other month off to study for Step 2.

Moral of the story = Schedule easy rotations from Mid November to January or use vacation time. Dont do away rotations / sub internships during this time.

Thank you. What is a subinternship? Is that an IM-away elective that you would do in order to do a transitional year somewhere? Are you supposed to fit in transitional year interviews on the same days as radiology interviews? Btw this is the list of programs from auntminnie(upload).
