I am an Army HPSP student who has a three year scholarship. Therefore,I owe the army three years of service. My question is, if I do a four year Army residency, do I incur an additional service obligation?

Yes. One for one, I believe.

My understandind is that the extra commitment is one for one post pgy-1. So...you would not owe an extra year unless you did a 5 year residency. I am a four year scholarship, and I would only pick up a year of commitment if I went to a 6 year program. Thank God I'm EM and it's only 3!!! 😀
So-... UI think you are good, unless the Army does it differently....Steve

Previous poster is correct. You incur one for one on post PGY-1 training. This is paid back concurrently with your scholarship obligation. Thus, unless the OP does a 5+ year residency or a GMO there are no problems.

i concur 🙂

Hey Virilep-
Do you go to Louisville? I am a senior here!! Let me know who you are- we can chat about the military....Steve

Maybe I'm missing something but it sounds to me that the OP will incur additional commitment if he/she does a residency of 4 yrs or longer. I am also on the 3 year scholarship and as I understand things, I owe 3 years of active duty (length of scholarship) after residency OR the length of my residency if it exceeds 3 years.

Actually, you incur additional obligation if your residency exceeds 4 years because internship neither incurs nor satisfies obligation.

Exactly. So when we're talking about a five year residency not affecting a four year commitment, we're talking about a one year internship (which is a wash in terms of accruing or paying off commitment time) and then four years of "residency."

Thanks for clarifying.
