Hey all! I'm new to this. I just finished my sophomore year and I have never been so confused. Since I started college all my extra curricular activities have been geared towards the pre-med track (volunteering in hospitals for pediatrics and the psychiatric unit, volunteering in a nursing home, shadowing a few doctors, research, working, having 2 leadership positions). During my spring semester of sophomore year I shadowed an ophthalmologist and I found it very intriguing but I wasn't too keen on the surgery aspect of it. So I thought what was similar and I came up with optometry. I decided to research it and see if it seemed interesting to me. Also, becoming older made me think not just of the career aspect of my life, but my family life if one day I do have one. So an optometrist, in my opinion, allows for greater time to spend with family and allows for more flexible hours.
The point of me saying all this is because I was wondering if I will still have a chance of getting into optometry school if I only have a year of optometry extra curricular activities before applying. Of course I'd continue doing things my senior year of undergrad. But will it look bad having all this volunteering not having to do with optometry? And lets say starting from fall until I apply I get involved with the pre-opt club, shadow 2 optometrists, and volunteer at an office can this give me a decent chance? Ah yes, also assuming gpa and oat are in tact 🙂
Thanks!
